RENT News: Post from "Who's Your Favorite RENThead" Winner Kyle

My journey with RENT began the summer going into my Junior year of High School where I was given a burnt CD to listen to. It was Act II of RENT. From the beginning, I found the music absolutely entrancing. Having no idea what the story was, and especially confused because I hadn't heard Act I, I would listen to the music every night and envision what I could of the story. A few weeks later I asked to borrow Act I. From that moment on, there has never been a moment where something RENT-related has not been part of my life. The next day I went out and bought the cast recording myself, and I passed the burnt copies on to my best friend, Corey. Ever since then, it has been my duty to pass RENT on to as many people as possible.

I remember many nights when Corey and I would discuss RENT - sometimes the music, sometimes the characters, sometimes how confused we were since we had yet to actually see the show. That spring the RENT tour came through Cleveland and my parents surprised us with tickets! We sat in the upper balcony, but felt no detachment whatsoever. The natural raw energy of the show held us captive to the performance. I will also admit that when the audience started mooing, it made me jump in my seat! I had been so engrossed and focused on the action onstage below me that I had forgotten that other people were there. I remember walking out of the theatre with Corey, my girlfriend, and my father... all in complete awe at what we had just witnessed.

In the spring of our Senior year, Corey and I performed "What You Own" for the Ohio Thespian Conference Individual Events Competition. From our first round of competition, we immediately became known as the "RENTboys". Everywhere we went people would stop us and talk to us about every aspect of the show. As the week wore on we anticipated the posting of the winners. We won the title of State Champions for Musical Duet! The song became the anthem of our lives and became a big hit throughout our school. We further took our performance to the International Thespian Conference, where we sadly didn't fare as well.

We both went through our first year of college - me for musical theatre, and he for music education. I remember so many times that year listening to RENT (driving my roommates and friends crazy) and realizing how relatable it was to the changes my life was going through. I had friends who started doing drugs, friends falling in/out of love, friends dealing with extreme depression, my girlfriend broke up with me - I felt very much like Mark, watching everything happen and seeing how it effected life around me. I grew up so much my Freshmen year of college. Occasionally I would call Corey and just tell him which RENT song related to my life at that point. It was almost like a little game we played.

Fast-forward to August, 2005-
Corey and I had been planning a trip to NYC for a while and we decided on the first week of August. Coincidentally, as time neared, we found out about the Today Show performance and contest. We spent the night on the streets of NYC, in an area we weren't familiar with - and me wearing a scarf my friend had made me... in 90° weather. At about 4am we joined the line of fellow RENTheads outside the Today Show studios. There were only about 20 people there at this point. We decided to stake our claim in line and then fell asleep. When I woke up about two hours later, there was a camera crew and a waiver was being placed in front of me. I signed it and almost immediately there was a camera crew recording me... I was very confused. I think they had to ask me the question four times before I was coherent enough to respond. As you could tell from the video, I wasn't really able to put a proper response together and I thought I didn't stand a chance at ever winning.

THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me and helped me live a dream.

Throughout the contest, I made many new friends through different websites including IMDB, BroadwayWorld, and CompulsiveBowlers. There were so many great people and GIGANTIC RENTheads everywhere. It was such an amazing pleasure being able to talk to so many people about something I love so much. I felt so privileged to be part of the contest. Among my new friends was a veteran of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. He was able to pull a few strings for me and I was able to borrow a sweater from the basement of the Nederlander Theatre to wear to the premiere!

Come premiere time, Corey and I took the Greyhound (13 hours) to NYC. We lived a poor life, being college students, and it was an absolute blast! We checked into the hostel and started preparing for the night ahead. When we arrived at the Ziegfeld there were already hundreds of RENTheads lining the street outside the theatre. We spoke to some of them and I felt so honored to be part of this. It was inspiring speaking to some of these fans. Some were older fans, but there were also a lot of younger fans. It is phenomenal how this show has lasted for ten years and is still building it's fanbase. So many people can relate to each of the characters and their various life-situations.

We were ushered into the theatre after claiming our tickets at will-call and immediately entered into a dream. The theatre was stunning. Everything was so ornate and beautiful, and so were the people! We rode the escalator to the second floor, where we were immediately overwhelmed. We were actually there! We sat in the lobby frozen and unknowing what to do, then we saw Sandy and Ari. We exchanged salutations and decided to find our seats. We went in the theatre and each successive usher told us just to keep walking... and walking... all the way to the front row! We took our seats and sat in the midst of an electric atmosphere. Everyone was buzzing the moment they stepped in the door. It was like we were at a real show. The energy was permeating everything, creating an unparalleled ambiance of exhilaration. We spotted Zuri and her dad nearby and we all had a really cool moment of "Wow... I feel like I know you!" The mood kept building until the music was stopped and the studio execs came out to give their speech. I looked back and saw the cast in the center section of the theatre, surrounded by their friends and family, looking just as excited as all the fans.

The moment the movie began (with no previews!) I became overwhelmed and - I'll admit it - I teared up. Here I was, witnessing the World Premiere of the movie that I had become so invested in over the past year. I felt like I had been part of the production and I felt such pride as I saw their names appear on the ginormous screen. We clapped as each name came up and it hit me how amazing these people were. I had spoken to most of them at the Today Show performance and now I was seeing them immortalized in something beautiful. Corey and I had gotten to see our role-models perform on the Today Show and in Bryant Park, and now we were sharing this experience with them. I could not believe that I was part of this night.

After the movie, which was filled with laughter, joy, nostalgia, and much sobbing, we all sat through the credits until the very end. When the tribute to Jonathan Larson came on the screen, there was an immediate resurgence of applause. It inspired me to see that he is truly appreciated. I thank him and his family for allowing us all to take part in this journey.

As we exited the theatre, I realized that Jesse and Wilson were right behind me. When we got to the lobby, Rosario was right in front of me. Seeing them standing there waiting with me to exit the building made me appreciate them so much more. Too often movie stars get egos and forget the fans, but these people were right with us, just as pleased as we all were. Their modesty continued all the way through the after-party.

Corey and I rushed back to our hostel to grab my video camera... I'm not entirely sure it was allowed at the party, but nobody stopped me! As soon as we entered the gorgeous Roseland Ballroom, I could not believe we were there. Everything had been decorated to give the impression of the Lower East Side of the late '80s. There was junk hanging everywhere, like the Broadway set, and like Maureen's performance space for "Over the Moon." There were old bikes, broken fans, posters plastered on the walls - downstairs was made to look like a Subway station and included some performers. We met up with a Sony person and were told to enjoy whatever we wanted. First off, the food was absolutely delicious and plentiful. Secondly, we were surrounded by beautiful people. Thirdly, I still can not believe we were there.

As we were introduced to each of the cast members, they were more than gracious enough to talk to us. Of course, everyone wanted to talk to them so our time was limited. There were a few points where Zuri's dad and I got left behind and had to play catch-up and introduce ourselves to them. I really appreciated Zuri's dad for sticking with me to make sure I, too, was able to have a picture with each cast member. Everybody looked phenomenal.

Tracie was absolutely adorable and I felt like I had known her for a long time. When we were introduced she said "It is so nice to meet you"... and I thought to myself "WHAT?! You are the amazing one!" She was so humble and truly beautiful as a person...
Chris was very pleasant and obviously very much in love with his family. He has given us all a great gift with this film...
Wilson was thrilled at everyone's enthusiasm and was quick to respond to our many questions...
Rosario was rushed because she had to leave early, but she was gorgeous. I spoke to her mother for nearly 20 minutes about several different things. I told her that Rosario's performance in "Out Tonight" was, for lack of better word, amazing. Not so much even the strip club portion, but once she left the club, her natural "joie de vivre" poured out. The image of her skipping down the street, dancing and singing was so REAL. It struck me as one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Her mother's response was "Oh, we do that all the time. Whenever we're happy that's what we do, we dance and sing... sometimes down the road"...
Adam looked excellent and was very pleasant to talk to. Corey and I told him of our victory with "What You Own" and he congratulated the two of us...
Jesse was just as charming in person. He is such a genuine guy who really cares...
Taye and Idina were both bombarded at the party and were very hard to reach, but they were both looking great...

That brings me to Anthony...
I have never met anyone so genuinely caring. He stood and talked with us for no less than 15 minutes in the midst of this whirlwind night of his. He took the time to really talk to us and asked what we thought and really listened. He embodies the essence of RENT. Being the only one to take the entire journey from the workshop performance in 1994 to the making of the movie, he has so much of himself in this work. I had the pleasure of speaking to him via BroadwayWorld where he answered some of my questions and we have been in touch with private messages. He is so much about the fans and making sure that we are all involved. I have been reading his posts since last October when he first posted about the RENT movie confirmation and appreciate everything he has done for us.

I am sorry for the lengthy post and thank any of you who bothered to read this far. There is so much more to say and I wish I had enough to tell you all everything that happened. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. It was a dream come true and I wish everyone could have shared the experience with me. RENTheads are such a strong support group that I am honored to be a part of.

I am so proud to have RENT as part of my life.
~Kyle

OOOOooooooooohhhhh Kyle!
I'm one of those crazy RENT fans that knows you because I know exactly how you feel about RENT, seeing someone who knows and feels so similarly about RENT makes me happy and proud to know that you were given the opportunity to be there and meet the cast. Reading your post made me cry because you really perfectly described how beautiful RENT is and what it is all about and what how much it means to me I am so happy to see able to have this experience because I feel like you perfectly represent RENT and what it means to me. You are an incredible person and I am so happy you were at the premiere.

Lots of Love,
Charlotte
I would love to be in contact with you

OMG! You are sooo lucky! I wish i were you there at the premiere. I saw you on t.v at the Today Show during Adam & Anthony's performence of What You Own! You were wearing the same outfit, talking to someone and video taping. How Cool! Lucky! <3

Kyle, it's great to read that! I for one, enjoyed the length of that. Haha, thanks for posting :]

Posted by: Becca on 12/12/05 at 07:56 PM

That must have been incredible... I probably would have reacted the same way.

I know how you feel though, seeing it in the theaters and then finally at the movies. It's amazing how different and the same and overwhelming it is to have a general idea about what the emotions the players were really trying to portray, then actually seeing and feeling part of the emotions they were going through while watching it on the big screen.

I would love to talk to someone who cares about this production as much as I do. Everyone I try to talk to about it gets bored with it. Either they 'love' it solely because the music's good, or they want to be part of a fad. Not that many people really take in EVERY aspect of it.

I went to school to analyze music and now I study sociology, or why people act the way they do. This is the perfect combination of both of my passions as well as my need to help people.

Now I'm rambling and I'm sorry... Congratulations!! Good luck, in the future!!

Posted by: Jessica on 12/12/05 at 08:01 PM

I completely wish I was you! Good luck on What You Own by the way. Sorry about your girlfriend.

Kyle,

I will email you a thousand times (with a thousand sweet kisses!) and tell you haow amazing you are! I think your post is longer than mine! You need to email me and remind me where you reside and we need to have many converstaions about RENT and life in general. I know exactly how you feel about the Markness of you life and I totally feel like I've know you for the longest even though your probably 10 years my senior. When I saw RENT I felt like an outsider in my own life and everything's been crazy. I want to always keep in touch and remember, when your cold and your lonely, I'll ALWAYS cover you! I have so much adoration for you and I hope we can maintain a friendship for the future. No Day But Today.

Finally Kyle!! We at BWW had begun to wonder what had happened to you! You had left us hanging for far too long young man.

I am glad to hear your experience was so awesome. You know we all envy you so tremendously.

You best grace us with your presence at BWW again soon!

Posted by: colleen_lee on 12/12/05 at 08:51 PM

hm...well kiddo, i really truly loved your story. I like hearing people talk about rent...whether its the cast or us fans. If you found that RENT was something you can hold onto throughout your life then all the power to you. it really is so much more than entertainment. It's life changing, there's just something about all that the cast puts into it and all that jonathon larson made it about...i dont know, it blows my mind. I read your entry in it's entirety. I stand by you as a fellow renthead who truly did understand every word you wrote...i get it. And gosh as for Anthony, he seems like the sweetest guy with the biggest heart. that same attitude is one of the things that really blew rent away, it fits for him. he can act it out well i'm sure but he doesnt really need to act does he...he seems like the kind of person who would be standing there singing up to Roger during the Another Day scene whether in character or not...i love it, i really just love everything this show stands for. Thanks for sharing your story Kyle, you did great.

Thanks for sharing your story, Kyle. :) I know we all have our own separate RENT stories, but they all seem to tie together in the way that our lives have been defined by this amazing show. It makes me so happy that someone so touched by the show got to be a part of the premiere (and, of course, sickeningly jealous ;) haha)

I have heard only good things about people meeting with Anthony. I hope someday I get the chance to meet him too. :D

Wow, Kyle all I can say is I am both profoundly jealous of and extremely happy for you! What an amazing experinece you had! What an amzaing journey it has been for all of us. I lie yourself was introduced to Rent by an old used CD,(only Act 2) except I was much younger than you when I lost my "Rent virginity" because I remember listening to it in the car and having to skip "Contact" b/c my mom and little brother were with me! It has been years since those days, but not a day has gone by that I don't think about RENT in some way.I was lucky enough to go to the midnight screening at the Ziegfield where Tracie and Anthony showed up. The poor dears were so bombarded but they took it in stride. And you are aboslutely right about Anthony. He is the most genuinely kind and generous person I have ever met. He stood outside in the freezing cold until the fans dissipated to just a handful, sporting an old messenger bag. I remember thinking "he is so Mark," but you are right, Anthony really made that role so "Mark is so Anthony!" It is nice to hear from another dedicate fan. Thanks for letting me re-live this magical night with you.
All my love,
Shira

I wish that I couldve met them and I think that I would pass out if I ever were to meet them, but I havent been all "renthead-ish" for that long a time. So I am now obsessed with rent and hopefully in the near future I will see it on broadway.

Wow Kyle, that sounds so awesome. I'm so glad you got to make your dream come true. I probably would've passed out like...20 times that night. I couldn't even imagine it.
I'd love to meet Anthony. This movie and this musical has made me such a huge fan of the cast, but I have to admit after I saw the movie I just completely fell in love with Mark, and Anthony's performance as Mark. I'll never be able to see anyone else in that role from now on.
Again, glad you had a great time.
We should all start planning for the RENT 20th Anniversary!!!!

You are one lucky guy. I wish I could have met the cast and had a 15 minute chat with Anthony Rapp. He is truly amazing and I admire him so much. I think it's great how much you love RENT, and you definitely deserved to go to the premiere. Your Mark scarf rocks! Best wishes, Kyle!

I just wanted to write and to tell you how amazing I think your story is. I am but a new comer to the world of RENTheads but to read your story I felt as though I have been there from the very begining.

I receved my invataion to the RENThead family much the same way you did. I was in a film workshop over the summer and was pared up with an old friend from high school. We got to talking about upcoming movies and he told me about RENT. I had heard about the show but had never actualy listened to the cast recording so he gave me a burned copy of the second act. And the rest is history. I was first in line at my local theater to see it and I'm going to be first in line to get the DVD.

Thank you again for you amazing story,
Megan

Ah, Kyle, love of Wax Lion's life. *giggles* As Wax Lion requested I voted for you many many (insert innumberable manys here) times. Then I decided to actually watch your video. After marvelling at your resemblence to a certain handsome blonde actor who played Mark, I loved how your story was so like mine. My mother gave me the CD as a joke last year for my birthday. Turned out to be the best present anybody ever gave to me.
I'm so glad you won, you deserved it. *has a small squee fest* I knew Anthony was the nicest, sweetest guy ever...just knew it! I want to meet him so much. Lucky you *giggles*

Mucho love and happiness,

Posted by: Jenny on 12/13/05 at 01:44 PM

Kyle,

I was very much touched by what you wrote. I was in the same boat you were when you first heard about RENT. I've been so obsessed lately that I don't even remember how I first heard about it. I haven't yet seen the Broadway show but that's been one of my many goals. My dad says we can possibly get tickets for the tour! My biggest passion in my life is my music and my biggest dream is to one day be on Broadway as well. Even though I've only been a fan since the film came out I truly feel like I've connected with the whole aspect of RENT. But it pains me to see new RENTHEADS like me be shut out by fans who have been there from the beginning. But I've now started looking at my life from a different perspective. RENT to me isn't just a movie or play anymore. It's truly a story about reality. It shows people that you don't always have to be afraid and that there's NO DAY BUT TODAY!

Thanks for sharing,

Annette

Kyle,
I'm old enough to be your mother but relate to so much of what you said! I am so happy for you that you were able to meet the source of your artistic inspiration and aspirations. I, too was at the premiere/after party and I applaud you for your grace and kindness in describing the cast, most of whom were truly as delightful as you described. However, in regard to Taye and Idina; I had a similar experience in meeting them (I was barely able to shake her hand before being "shooed" away by her "people) Quite the disappointment, especially considering how open everyone else was....
You are one classy young man! Don't ever give up on your dream. Jonathan Larson is proof positive that anything is possible. I hope to buy a ticket to see you on Broadway some day!

I was just watching the video of you and Corey doing What You Own...I still can remember you guys running back after our performance of Dr Suess with tears in your eyes as we all screamed and hugged and cried...I remember every preshow of Damn Yankees when you performed it, last year at the Skippers thing...then I look at what you have done and who you have gotten to meet and what a great expereience you had. And I am still so proud of you.

Love always,

Posted by: kelsey on 12/14/05 at 03:52 PM

I just want to share my sorrows.. on this very sad day when we found out that RENT is being taken out of theatres. I don't even know what to say.. this movie was amazing, incredible, beautiful..everything it should have been. And even though it did not do as well as we all hoped that does not take anything away from how good it was. Uy, I cant even handle myself. I knew this day would come, but it's just too soon and its so sad that I'll never get to see it in theatres again. I know I'm being dramatic, but i'm gonna miss it. We should start a protest--we wont leave the theatres, 'over the moon' style :). Thank you cast of rent, chris colombus, and everyone else involved for making this movie. This past year has been amazing and I'll never care about a movie as much as this one. This whole experience holds a special place in my heart thanks to all of you for providing us with such goodies while waiting for this movie and just being the nicest people ever. I'm way to upset right now, this is just not normal. Thank you all so much, and thank you Jonathan Larson. <3.

Does anyone know when RENT is set to be released on DVD? Its already been taken off the big screens in my culture-deprived town!! I am ready to own it! If anyone knows, PLEASE respond!

Posted by: Sarah on 12/14/05 at 08:22 PM

Its off most the screens where I live too...:'( :'( :'( WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?? I've only seen it 5 times...and i can't see it for awhile cuz of finals...GRRR!!! I still know a bunch of people who really wanna see it and when I went at 10:30pm last weekend there was definately a good number of people in the audience. I dont understand. I totally thought it should've gotten nominations for Golden Globes!!! Are People are just too close-minded to understand the beauty and signifigance of Rent? The message of Rent can never be outdated either. That's like saying stories of the Holocaust are outdated...it's not true--these stories ALWAYS need to be told. Is this the end of the blogs too? Cuz that will make me cry again! :'( I'm way too used to going online and always having a new one to watch! They make me so happy.

Posted by: Amanda on 12/14/05 at 10:55 PM

I REALLY ENJOYED READING ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE!!! It sounds SO amazing. The way you wrote made me feel like I was there at the premier! CONGRATULATIONS!

Can anyone suggest (as I have lost the name)of an actors orgainization , I beleive, that has posters signed of rent to sell during the holidays for charity? My daughter ahs fallen in love with rent and I'd liek to surprise her.

Thanks

Posted by: Eric on 12/15/05 at 08:01 PM

I loved this. It reminds me a little of me and my friend's life, too. We're both young, but we relate the songs in Rent to our life as well.

I would love to have this experiance! Oooo, but I'm glad so many RENTheads were able to be there and let everyone know how much we all care.

I'm sad that this blog will have no more entries, it's made me feel closer then I already did to people I've never met (the cast)!

I was really pleased with the movie and I notice things each time I see it that I didn't notice before.

Tracie! We love you! My friend and I love you better the Fredi Walker. You make me feel close to you, since you, too are a RENThead. Also, you have an amazing AMaZING voice and are an incredible actress. *kiss kiss*

I loved the part in Kyle's story about Anthony, Anthony is my favorite, dearist to my heart and I love it when people pick him out and make him special.

I was looking for some Rent pictures to put as the wallpaper on my computer and I came across your blurb and your experience. I just recently got into Rent and I'm now extremely jelous that my brother got to see it preformed live some 6 years ago before I was really old enough to understand it. RENT is really starting to impact my life like its impacted yours and I just wanted to say how happy I am for you. I got excited for you just reading about your experience. Oh and I'm from Ohio and will soon go to an Ohio Thespian State conference! Hopefully I could preform something like you do.

Never forget those moments. Those memories you described here are worth so much. And i'm sure I don't have to tell you to forget them.
Here I sit, at 6 am, not able to sleep, and reading random people's blogs on RENT. Your story truly touched me. It's nice to know there is so much passion out there for this show. It truly is amazing. The music is amazing, everything about it. The fact that you met the cast...oh gosh...unbelievable. I would probably give anything to meet that cast. Especially Adam. Something about his voice really touches me. WHen you posted that you sang, "what you own" with your friend Cory, i was half expecting to find a link to a recording of you two! lol, i wish i had. I would of enjoyed seeing/hearing it. I really would. Anyway, you are an inspiration to many of us to keep on going. To live out our dreams. I am so happy for you, even though I don't know who you are. But I am happy that all this worked out so wonderfully for you. I can't imagine how wonderful it must of been. Stay true to yourself, and never forget those wonderful times you had =)

I've always wanted to work on broadway because I love it, and after this whole experience of seeing Rent, it makes me want to make my dreams come true. Thanks so much for your wonderful story and hopefully one day I will be as lucky as you and meet the cast too. I said that I just had to see the film, so I went with some friends and I cried, Sure I cried because it was sad, but I cried because it was so amazing! You performers are amazing at what you do and I hope someday I will get to play a wonderful character like you did. Good luck and in future and thank you for creating such an entertaining and amazing production. You really are gifted people, share your gift! It would be amazing to get to meet you guys, you inspired me to try my best. I'm sure you gave many people out there in the world hope. Congratulations! Good- bye.

I am so obsessed with Rent. I saw the movie in thearters twice, brought the soundtrack, and i just recently bought the dvd. The movies theme and music are just phenomenal. i wish i could have seen the stage play but im only 14 and the stage play took place when i was like 8. Out of all the songs of the movie, "Will I" was my favorite."Will i lose my dignity? Will someone care? Will i wake tommorrow from this nightmare?" (lol)

wow, that whole experience sounded wonderful! I'm glad you won, you seem like you deserved it. I know RENT has touched my life and all of my friends are pretty much in love with it too. Its so much fun, you have to be obsessed with it!

There's something about RENT. I'm not sure of what it is. Something that captures the soul, pauses the imagination, and takes one to a new demension. There's no way a human can watch this movie and not become so entranced by the story portrayed by the characters that your heart feels like it's melting.

Thank you cast, directors, and for everyone who put together RENT the movie. The story was incredible to watch, and the songs were so beautifully sung.

May God bless you.
