Rent blows all the other movies out of the water, duh! Just kidding (well, not really, but Mrs. Doubtfire and Harry Potter and Home Alone are good movies) I think the bond the actors have is such an amazing and strong one

One of my favorite things about RENT the movie is the voices. I mean, no kidding they were amazing at the show. But they most definitaly "grew up" and its so amazing to hear the voices compaired to the OBR. Rent is love.

i love rent. keep posting clips! by the way, when will the dvd be coming out? i cant wait to own it! ill be watching it every day for sure.

Posted by: katrina on 12/06/05 at 06:18 PM

I am very much hoping that Mr. Columbus reads these as well, since I would like to suggest to hime, as I'm sure others have, that he should do another musical. I really really really think he should do Aida, and I really really really really think he should do Wicked. And the really cool thing is that if he chose to do Aida, he could ask Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel, as I have heard they were both in it at one point. And I'm not really sure how the others of RENT could be used, although I would hope he would use them. They are all very talented, and I'd love to see another musical done with the cast of RENT even if it's a new creation. You're all wonderful, thank you to the cast, crew, and Mr. Jonathon Larson for giving us this wonderful movie.

Much love and Continued success to all of you!

Hooray for video blogs! I love this!

You guys are great at asking questions... these are exactly things we want to know! The pictures that come along with each video blog are amazing too. I hope they come out with something for RENT movie.

Don't go back Chris! There are some amazing musicals out there that deserve to be made into movie musicals. I would love to see that, and we hope you are the director for the job, especially now that we have so much faith in you. (Different from your type of music, but you can always check for a romantic love story with Light in the Piazza!) Also, I'm sure there are a lot of people who are interested in a Wicked movie. It would be amazing for you to do the Wicked movie, because then *hopefully* we would have some of the OBC do the movie! haha, that got me a little too excited... so I'm going to stop typing now ;).

Thanks for the video blogs!

Question-
For Idina, Tracie, Anthony, Wilson, and Jesse

How did you feel about playing a character whose sexual orientation is different than your own?

Posted by: Lila on 12/06/05 at 07:37 PM

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when I heard RENT was going to the big screen. I mean for me, nothing beats live theatre. At any rate, I thought the movie was good and Chris did a great job of blending in the dialogue without it sounding too cheesy.

Have Fun Times!

Thanks Chris!

Not only did you direct a wonderful movie and make many RENTheads' dreams, realities, but you also kept and continue to keep us so involved in the process as well as the aftermath. Thanks again. I'll be looking forward to more blogs soon :)

Posted by: kelsey on 12/06/05 at 07:46 PM

I loved how the movie didn't stray from the main idea of the musical. It seriously is one of the best movies I've ever seen (and not because I'm a renthead) but because it's a great movie.

Posted by: Molly on 12/06/05 at 08:22 PM

adventures in babysitting was and is and will always be one of my favorite movies. and now, so will Rent. chris columbus, you are truly a visionary, thank you for your passion and commitment to excellence!

Posted by: Erin on 12/06/05 at 08:23 PM

Yeah, Bravo... AMAZING!! Absolutely phenomenal... I can't say enough about it and I can't stop watching!! It truly is infectious... When IS the DVD coming out!?!

Posted by: Jessica on 12/06/05 at 08:42 PM

Well, if it's gonna be wierd going back to directing non-musicals, I guess the only solution is to keep directing musicals. You did a great job with this one.

Posted by: Kristi on 12/06/05 at 09:06 PM

Thanks for makin it happen Chris! The movie was amazing, and it doesnt get much better.

Posted by: Mickey on 12/06/05 at 09:08 PM

WOW, three blogs in one day....awesome!!

CHRIS, THANK YOU!!!! RENT IS FANTASTIC. You did such an INCREDIBLE job. You truly captured what RENT is all about. You nailed every scene. Johnathon Larson would be so proud of you and the cast. You are right. Musicals are infectious. I am a huge musical fan too. You are definitely my favorite director. I have been a fan of your work since Home Alone. I will continue to follow your career. You rock! I LOOOVE RENT!

XOXO,
Ashley M.

Posted by: Ashley on 12/06/05 at 09:11 PM

I just got home from seeing the film for my fourth time. And I still cried. Tonight was by far the best though. My friends and I were the only ones in the theater...yeah I was totally dancing down the aisle on La Vie Boheme. Yeah we're dorks!

Posted by: Jessie on 12/06/05 at 10:12 PM

I am sooo thankful for the videos and esp.
the AOL Sessions pieces and all the posts by the
fellow RENTheads here on the site.
I've been out there reading some very vitriolic
reviews and can't believe the level of blindness
some critics have in regards to this film and
possibly to RENT as a whole (or they are showing
their prejudice toward musicals.) Chris C. in this clip really shows his love of the form;
thank God he was in charge of this project!!
We certainly were given a gift this Christmas
season! 'Saw the movie again. This time
a whole bus load of students rolled in....
How cool is that? If more of us had been taken to a movies like this on a field trips when we were in High School ... I think the world would be a better place!

Posted by: Donley on 12/07/05 at 02:49 AM

home alone is my all time little kid movie. you are quite the director, and we are all blessed that you directed this magnificant movie. rent has had a big impact on me, since the first time that i heard the broadway soundtrack actually. the music is captivating with it words and the talented cast who sang it. I love it i love it!

Thanks for what you have done!
-Steph

Thank you so much Chris for such a lovely piece of art. Why not direct another musical? You love the genre and it reflects in the quality of your work, and you can obviously pull such a difficult cinematatic task off. I'm telling you, you should do Aida (or another "rock musical", since those are the ones you like), and keep this same cast. Adam is Radames, Idina is Amneris, Tracie is Aida, etc... It would be awesome.

Posted by: Christina on 12/07/05 at 06:55 AM

Chris you are the Man! I just saw the recent HP and was so disappointed. Thank you for always trying to bring out the truth of the original writing -- or in this case, the musical. Thank you so much for sharing the creative aspects of creating RENT with us fans. PLEASE make sure to include these on the DVD! (Currently don't see RENT coming to theaters here in Asia yet. boo hoo)

Finally congrats on the NYTimes review! Bravo!!

Your fan,
Michel

Posted by: Michel on 12/07/05 at 09:18 AM

Chris,
you really should be considered a legend with all of the amazing movies you have directed. I mean when movie like Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire are on television everyone tunes in becuase they are just classics. I am so happy you directed RENt and had such a great time directing it at that! I think you have really developed a fan base with us RENT heads. You did an amazing job. Can't wait until your next film! Thanks again for this amazing movie.

Posted by: Amy on 12/07/05 at 09:44 AM

I LOVED this movie. I am sad to say I had never heard of the musical until I went and say the movie the day after it opened, but I am now a HUGE fan! I've seen it 5 times already and was lucky enough to get an empty theater yesterday so I could dance down the aisle and sing at the top of my voice. I admire your work as well and it is a goal of mine to someday be in a movie that you are directing, even if it is just as an extra. Keep up the awesome work and I look forward to anything else you might do in the future.
Much Love,
Megan

CHRIS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO A DIRECTOR's CUT!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...

well...even if i dont i respect your decision...as long as we get those songs on deleted scnes, because halloween is one of my faves! Thank you so much for bringing Rent to film. I live in California and have never been to New York and was too young when it came here so this movie is incredible for me. I saw it at midnight in the city (SF) and have seen it 4 times since. It is truly an inspiration and i dont think that it could have been done better. My friends always ask me why i'm still crying at the end even though i know mimi lives, and its because Rent just moves me. It's incredible, you are a genius...thank you soo sooo much for changing my life!

I have to say that the one little part during "without you" where Roger is holding Mimi on the couch when they're soaking wet (the second picture in the post) is one of the best parts of the movie. Those few seconds of film, which don't even have any dialogue, are so powerful and moving. You did an awesome job Chris.

Posted by: Nikki on 12/08/05 at 08:01 AM

Chris, I just have to say you are my Favorite Director. I was so AMAZED with RENT as well. It was INCREDIBLE!!!!

Lots of Love, Lindsey, FL

Posted by: Lindsey on 12/08/05 at 05:33 PM

Mr. Columbus, you were the only man for the job in turning our beloved Broadway show into a movie and you did an AMAZING job. :D

Posted by: Jasmine on 12/10/05 at 09:03 AM

Just saw RENT, it was amazing. LOVED it completely. The musical isvone of the best I have seen since "Rocky Horror Picture Show." It is very emotional, and I loved every second of it.

Posted by: Deb on 12/10/05 at 05:09 PM

Chris, you've done something truly beautiful and amazing and something that embodies everything of what RENT is about...=) Something to be proud of. I can't say "thank you" enough times, and I don't know how to say it. You've given the fans and the world something this wonderful...doesn't it feel great? Hehe.

I would love to see you direct another musical...I'll be on the lookout just in case, and know that you have supporters if you ever do decide to!

Much love,
~Alex

I'm fairly new to the songs and the story of RENT, but last year when I bought the OBC recording, I immediately fell in love with your voices, the songs and everything else about RENT. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to see the show yet which is why I was so excited when I found out it was going to be a movie. I just wanted to let everyone in the cast know that the movie was so amazing and so moving! I loved every second of it. The whole time watching the movie I felt like I was part of the "experience" I sang with Roger, I danced with Mimi, I laughed with Angel, I cried with Collins, I mooed with Maureen, I tangoed with Joanne, and I made a movie with Mark. Thank you so much, all of you, for giving me the opportunity to witness such talent, and bringing joy to your fans through every moment! I love you all!!!!
Love Always,
Katie

Posted by: Katie on 12/14/05 at 02:52 PM

i have LOVED all the movies that you have dicected espeacially RENT and Harry Potter i just have always wanted to be in one of those i think they are amazing and you are a fantastic director

Posted by: Maggie on 01/13/06 at 03:44 PM

You know what would be so cool? If the whole cast would come to my house and sing "Today 4 U Tomorrow 4 Me" in my living room!

But seriously, Chris, you are an awsome director and I am sick of hearing bad things about you. I think you must have the least inflated ego in Hollywood, becuase you always work to please the fans and not to impose your own 'vision' on to your projects. It's like when you go for a haircut, the stylist who thinks he's a visionary and an 'artiste' who won't listen to what *you* want on your head, becuase he has his own ideas. But you're the stylist who gives us what we ask for and keeps your own ego out of it. And we love you for that. Thanks for Adventures in Babysitting, Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone, and especially RENT!

Posted by: Amanda on 02/01/06 at 10:47 PM

I've always loved the muscial Rent, but you brought a totally new dimension to it when you did this film. One of the best film adaptions of a musical! We're still singing songs days after seeing it. Beautiful film, thank you!
