Jesse - you are such a talented actor! I saw you for the first time on Law and Order the other day and was taken aback by how different the role is, and yet you have embraced that character just as you have Collins. Don't ever stop singing and performing though, please. The Broadway world needs you :)

RENT has to be one of the most beautifully done movies I have ever seen. An amazing job to every one who was a part of the production of this film. If your goal was to reach out and touch the lives of everyone who is to see this movie, there is not a doubt in my soul telling me it wont happen. Congradulations to you all on a spectacular job well done!

Jesse...you are the bomb.
I can't believe how talented this cast is.
Taye, I remember seeing you in SOTA performances, way back when...I had such a crush on you!
And of course, Idina steals the show in every scene she's in. Incredible.

I am so stoked for this movie!! I love this clip and am looking forward to seeing the rest of the performance when I see the movie tonight.

I saw the first available time in my area to see RENT. I absolutely loved it. It was amazing and even surpassed my expectations. I am so proud of everyone who worked on this film, because it gets the message across. I am not a movie crier for any means, but I started crying so hard during this movie. As soon as the movie started, and Seasons of Love was playing, I started shaking with anticipation. I loved every minute of it, and I can't wait to go back and see it so many more times. I was talking to my dad about the movie, and he was really happy a movie was being made about AIDS. He was also very excited for me that it was the original Broadway cast who was a part of this movie. Thank you to Chris Columbus, and thanks to you guys for making the movie that will change people's lives. Jonathon's message is so beautifully protrayed. It was funny and emotional and the use of Mark's camera was perfect.
Thank you. It was the perfect Thanksgiving reminder.
Love, Joyce

To the Cast: (Right, is that right? I know it's a comment thing, but it would be cool if they read it)
YAY! wow this IS my first comment on here! Rent is in theaters TODAY!!!!!! AAAHH! ...oh wait, I am supposed to commenting on the clip, sorry. I love this clip along with the others! Jesse you have the most gorgeous smile ever! I just adore the entire cast! Thank you for being apart of this movie, I can't wait to see it...watching all these clips doesn't help though. lol okay quick message time to everyone:
(I don't know if any of the cast will read this, I hope so!)
Adam- You are definitely a hottie! Do you like you hair being short or long? I think it looks better long, but that's just my opinion. lol wait, one more thing. I love when you say,"pfft, it's a candy bar wrapper." on the movie soundtrack, it cracks me up!
Anthony- I can't wait for 'Without You'!!! I'll definitely (sp?) buy it....ooh,I'll buy one for my friend too! (he's as obsessed with Rent as I... I mean I'm not obsessed with Rent, what are you talking about?! lol)
Idina- I have a cool little story about how I came to know Rent... see, I think it was last year...hmm...anyways, I had seen Wicked, and I just adored Sho, so I wanted to buy the CD... Then I found out it had the OBC, so I said cool (even though I was a tince bummed).... I listened to it, and was all, "Oh my goodness,Idina has such a beautiful voice!!!!! (then I saw you pic) AH! She is soo pretty!" So then I looked you up and found that you had done Rent before that... and now I am cough, obsessed, cough. You are definitely one of my role models and top broadway stars! Thank you so much for being apart of Rent, and Wicked. You have certainly changed me...For Good! (sorry just had to,lol)
Jesse- Well I already told you, but I'll tell you again, you have the most gorgeous smile EVER! Also, I just love your voice, it's so smooth!
Rosario- You play Mimi very well, and I enjoy listening to you version of Out Tonight! Tis' the best!
Taye- I love when you say,"yeah I did, and there on stand-by." I don't really know why, just do. lol. Thanks for taking on the role of Benny again.pssst...I love your role in Malibu's Most Wanted, cracks me up everytime!
Tracie- You are so pretty, and you have a very beautiful voice. I enjoy watching your version of Joanne. To me she seems more laid back than the original, did you want her to be like that?
Wilson- Angel is one of my fave characters! I loved all drumming in Today 4 U!!!! I wish I could do that!
Well, sorry if this "comment" is soo long, I hope it makes sense, lol, I can't wait to see the movie, and thank you again for being apart of the Rent Legacy (hey, it's a legacy to me!).
I know Rent has changed so many, and will continue to change more with it's powerful story and message. I know it has certainly changed me... No Day But Today. I love you all!!!!!!!!!
Be Well,
Shelby
P.S. Yesterday was MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!! So I count RENT as my birthday GIFT!!!!! YAY!

Just came back from seeing the movie...AMAZING I must say. To everyone involved, thank you so much. It was truly wonderful work. I know there were a lot of skeptical people out there and if those people actually go out and see the movie, they'll be put to shame. Probably gonna go see it again tonight. Once again, thank you so much. Can't wait for the DVD.

I just got back from seeing the movie...oh my word...it was amazing. When it finished the entire theatre full of students (the theatre is next to my college and they did a special matinee showing just for the students so we could see it before heading home for Thanksgiving) was silent. Absolutely silent in total awe. We all sat there in silence throughout the entire credits. And when Jesse sang his solo-the gospel style one, I just don't want to spoil plot for people who haven't seen it-I just sat there as tears ran down my face. Amazing. Completely amazing. Good job, all of you.

I have seen this movie twice already and can honestly say that it was amazing. I absolutely loved everything that you did with it. Being a renthead myself, I am extremely excited to be able to take in such a moving story about life and love whenever I want. The movie more than surpassed my expectations and opened my eyes to a whole new side of rent. You were able to use different techniques and settings to emphasize certain scenes, something that would have been difficult to do on stage.
I just wanted to let everyone know how much I appreciate all of the work that went into this film. I truly believe that the story touches the heart of everyone who hears it. Now, everyone around the world can hear the story. I think Jonathon Larson would have been proud. Once again, thank you for an amazing movie. No day but today.
Posted by: Megan on 11/23/05 at 12:29 PM
I saw the midnight showing. The line outside went for about block! The theatre owner even had to create a 2:30am showing to satsify the rest of the rent-heads who couldn't get tickets in time. I swear after the movie ended, there was this moment of silence and then an earsplitting applause. All I can say is Chris Columbus and this wonderful cast made a lot of rent-heads happy...

I saw the movie last night at midnight and was absolutely blown away. It was AMAZING! I Loved every minute of it and can't wait to go see it ten more times! It was great to finally see how they put each song into the movie after lisening to the soundtrack for the past month and it was all done so well! Congratulations to the whole cast! It definetly did the story justice. If only you were all on broadway doing the show again... what's this I hear about a 10th anniversary show?

From the second that the Revolution Studios symbol came on the screen, I was filled with such a high level of excitement that stayed with me throughout the entire film. And what a beautiful film it is!!
I felt a huge range of emotions throughout the entire film, and I cannot wait to see it again and share it with so many of my family members and friends.
To Chris, Rosario, Taye, Wilson, Jesse, Idina, Adam, Anthony, and Tracie--

All I can say is wow! I went to the first showing of Rent at the local theater. For the past week I've listened to the original cast recording, preparing to see the movie! When Seasons of Love started, I teared up. From beginning to end I was either smiling, laughing or crying. I felt as though the movie version brought me even closer than the musical to all of the emotions of the characters and the true meaning of the play. Thank you to the entire cast for being part of such an amazing and moving piece of work. And Jesse, your smile just captivated me! I think out of all the characters, Tom and Angel touched me the most. The love really was so true and genuine.
I will never forget the day I saw the musical as a young teen, and I will never forget the way I felt today after watching the movie as an adult. Thank you!

Just got back from the movie…Adam Pascal will you have my babies? No really, seriously…ok maybe not but you're... there are no appropriate lady like words for what your voice does…
Jesse, I adore you, your adorable so personable, and sexy at the same time, maybe they can work Collins into law and order you can catch the guys who mug him ;-)
Wilson, your perfect for angel, you seem so sweet and kind you bring to him this gentle inner light. If your not, well then great acting! :-D
Anthany, Thank God your Mark! If I had to see one more washed up teen Idol desecrating that role I was going to cry. Openly weep.
I have a question, not that I think I will get an answer but did you know Jonathan well? I kinda worship him, I wrote my high school term paper for music on him. Which made me rather popular by the way, when all the other girls did Backstreet Boys. I was Just wondering is there any little thing about him that you remembered coming back to these characters?

Dear Jesse, Chris, Rosario, Taye, Wilson, Idina, Adam, Anthony, Tracie and all the extremely talented others who made up this cast:
Simply amazing. Saw the musical once in Toronto in the 90s, once a few years ago in Ottawa and then tonight the movie in Toronto. It was breathtaking, not a dry eye in the House, truly something to be forever proud of (Jesse: your voice is incredible, so happy to see you make a return to music!)
It's a movie I will buy and then play for anyone who hasn't seen it. Everyone needs to experience this at least once.
Great job all around!

What can I say man? I thought you were good in Law and Order, but I saw a whole new side to your talent. I'd never heard you sing before this movie. I am totally impressed! You and Wilson are the bomb in RENT. I am now officially a Renthead.
Posted by: Chandra on 11/23/05 at 08:03 PM
Jesse, I saw the movie today (DUH) and I have to say that out of all the performances, I was the most impressed with yours. You made me laugh and cry. Before this, the character of Collins has always been a little lost to me. But you really made him come alive. "Merry Christmas, bitches!" Hah. Totally my new favorite saying!
You're a huge inspiration, and I hope one day I can be as good of an actor as you are!
Posted by: Eva on 11/23/05 at 08:16 PM
This scene is so amazingly choreographed. Jesse your song makes us happy and I love how you move so fluidly! Wilson loved how you just looked faboo and jumped right in. You guys are the best Angel and Tom characterizations regardless of how long it's been. The movie seems to work so much more fluidly than the orig bdway moves at times. Thank you again for these fantastic teaser clips!!! Please keep em coming they only make fans want to see the movie more and gives us sumthing to brag about to nonbelievers.

Oh my God, RENT just came out and I was sooo thrilled at seeing it! Whenever I saw Collins come out, or anyone else for that matter, I just jumped for joy and --- the song "Without You" made me burst into tears, especially with Angel and Collins, I kept on crying into What You Own. Thanks so much for coming out with this movie, and on doing a totally GREAT job!

You and all of the cast were amazing. I can see why Rent was such a hit. I saw the movie yesterday and had never seen the musical and was blown away. I have never cried so much at a movie. Your scenes with Wilson were so powerful.

Jesse L Martin, when are you going to play "Marvin Gaye?" I have heard a few names thrown around but I think that you should get with three people:
1.) Motown's best VP, William C "Smokey" Robinson.
2.) Lem Barney (formerly of the Detroit Lions and Marvin's best friend),
3.) Marvin's daughter Nona Gaye (she should be in the movie for sure), then GET
IT DONE!
I'm was born-n-raised in the "D" (35 years) and I know a Marvin Gaye when I see one, his house was on Vassar Ave near Griggs, just around the corner from my Mother, she lived on Snowden Street. My Mom once designed a few outfits for Motown Records and my sister Jeri' and I design those tight paints with the cutout circles going down a ladies leg before Motown went to California. We made the pattern using "The Detroit News" news paper, because there was no pattern designs previous to that. It didn't take a lot of imagination.
Jesse, you have Marvin's natural smile, weight, and height. Its that "grin" of yours that captures your audience and I know of no one better!
In a few days I'll go to see "RENT" because it is getting great reviews here in Arizona. I would also love to see you in a film about the Negro League (Not The X Files), a script that I'm currently working on.
I had the pleasure to share about 5 years in Detroit with Michael, Satchel Paige's grandson and Satchel's lovely daughter Linda, who takes care of his rocking chair as if Satch is coming to the dugout too relax in it, after is customary 3 innings for the remainder of the game. I learned a lot about Satchel!
Also, for two years I worked with a jitney or grocery cabby, who worked outside of a eastside grocery store called, "Chattams Supermarket" on Detroit's eastside at Harper and Gratiot Street. For two years as I totaled up grocery, this little man assisted shoppers and not once did he mention that he was once in the, Negro League. I would love to have my story directed by Michael Man------who wouldn't. Later! GC AZ

I think that you were great in Santa Fe. You dance great and are really great. I think your smile is so bright that it makes the whole screen light up. You are a very cool person. Bye

The movie was WONDERFUL!! It meant so much to me. I have loved RENT since it first came out, when I was 16. Jesse, you were superb!!
Posted by: Katey on 11/25/05 at 08:44 AM
Jesse and Wilson,
You guys were amazing during the movie. Every scene in which you two were together just made me smile. I really felt as if you two were in love with each other. Which is what I think binds the show together. Collins and angel choose to share that love but then get taken apart. Whereas, Mimi and Roger / Joanne and Maureen, Can be together but just choose not to follow their hearts. Oh, you two (Jesse and Wilson) definetly did a fantastic job.
Congrats to all the cast, you really honored jonathan with this one!
love over all else!

Jesse, you are the sweetest. Angel's funeral brought me to tears -- and I /never/ cry during movies. I walked past the NBC Experience store in Rockefeller Center today and saw a rather large cardboard cutout of you in the window and pointed it out to everyone.
Wilson, you are fabulous. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. If you look back on all the blog comments, its been me repeatedly asking you to marry me. But after I saw that movie...I realized I wanted you to marry me even more! I hugged you in Virgin Records in Times Square on November 14 and it was nearly the highlight of my life. My favorite one-liner in the movie has to be "You're drunk!" "No Im not". Just the way you said it cracked me up. Sigh. I really feel like one of Idina's crazy obsessive fans right now.
Angel - and I know there's an Angel somewhere out there - may you rest in peace, you sweet thing.
Much love,
Natalie

Mr. Martin,
First of all, great name. Second of all, honestly, the first time I saw you act in something was on Law and Order, but after hearing you sing, and seeing you in this movie and as the Ghost of Christmas Present, I realize that you are one of the few acclaimed actors that will still be remembered in the centuries to come. The pure emotion during Angel's funeral was amazing. All anyone heard in the theater after the song was done was sniffling and the passing of tissues. I know this may seem long winded, but I just have so much repsect for you as a performer and an entertainer that I hope to be able to come close to your caliber of showmanship. For now, I'll end with a personal standing ovation. Bravo!
Sincerely and admiringly,
Jesse E. L.

Where did you get your voice from. You are amazing Santa Fe was one of my faviorte song from the moive. Did you have fun signing on the train and dancing. Did you and Wilson have to do a lot of practice for that number.

Mr. Jesse Martin!!!
I LOVED this movie so much!! I can honestly say that I fell in love with Angel and Collins, and cried my eyes out when Angel died and cried harder when the cast sang I'll cover you- reprise. So far since the movie has come out I have seen it three times. Once, was the first time it came out and twice yesterday and I still get chills and cry every time. I honestly loved this movie!!!!!

Jesse, I am now a huge fan of yours!!! I had no idea you sang at all, much less so beautifully!!! How I wish I could have seen Rent with the original cast!!! And I definitely agree with Jill, you need to play Marvin Gaye! Whatever you need to do to get that done, just go for it! Take care and I wish you the best!

Hi Jesse -- I've been a big fan ever since your Greg Butters days on Ally McBeal, and although I was not fortunate enough to have seen an OBC stage verison of Rent, I have played and played that soundtrack. Having seen the movie and listened to its soundtrack, I am intrigued by the subtle changes in your vocal tone (I'm a voice teacher, music director and accompanist). It sounds like you're resonating more in the mask than in the throat, and I was wondering if that was due to a conscious effort on your part or just something that has occurred with time.
Thanks,
Pam

this has become one of my favorite songs just by the way you guys sang it. I have been in love with RENT for about 7 or 8 years now but the movie has touched me so much that its hard to explain.

Jesse. I met you when you and the cast were recording at Right Track with Arif Mardin. Just wanted to say that you and everyone were excellent in the film. You all went far beyond my expectations. Also everytime I listen to Bill Withers I think of you. Anyway, congratulations kid!

i saw the stage version a few years ago on the show's first run in Vegas. it took a while for it to get here, but it did.
sat in line for the Artists Rush tickets and got, much to my amazement, 1st row, just about center.
me? i like to sit in the House seats so i can see the whole stage, but i was thrilled to be in the front row that time.
being the former theatre major that i am, my heart was racing just as the lights went down.
i was transported.
the second time Rent came to Vegas, I couldn't go. i heard that the houses were less than half filled. it's a shame because it's such a wonderful show.
anyway, i saw the movie yesterday morning.
i loved it.
it's not easy bringing a stage show to the screen, but chris columbus did an admirable job.
and the cast is stellar.
it made me very happy to see that most of the cast had been in the stage version.
(happy to see jesse getting to show how versatile a performer he is.)
and rosario dawson knocked me out in Sin City.
she did it again in Rent.
yes. i cried. TWICE. thanks, y'all.
when the dvd comes out, it'll be added to my collection.

Well, I just wanted to tip my hat to the production of RENT. I have seen RENT 7 times on stage and I have seen RENT 3 times on the big screen so far! IT WAS GREAT...IT WAS AMAZING..... I know that you guys are receiving lots of praise from all my fellow RENTHEADS out there... Please know that when I was struggling to find out what I was doing in life and who I was and basically as my day to day fix, I turned to the brilliance of Jonathon Larson and his masterpiece, RENT... Thank you guys for giving me a glimpse of faith and hope in this scary world called modern day America.... Thank you thank you thank you... I love every single reason that this script came to life! And hey, the money's not that bad either, right.. LoL.. Take care and God Bless.. My love goes out to you guys... You are all so incredible! Peace to you and good karma.... Nik

This song "Santa Fe" really sneaks up on you! I can't stop playing it on the CD!!!!
Excellent production and if I'm ever on a subway they'll have to clear out so I can swing on the poles!

Hi Jesse,
I think we were in the same dorm on 5th ave at NYU around 1989. I was in Tisch for dance.
Congratulations on all your success.
You are so very talented.

Jesse...I have watched you on Alle McBeal and several other TV shows but you were just amazing in the movie! Your voice is so incredible and you played the part so well...everyone was outstanding but I just thought your performance was just so sincere and moving. Forget TV and stick with the musicals...you definately have a truly unique gift.
Best wishes for a very happy hoiday season!

I think I'm in love! I have always loved the play; I saw it once, I am seeing it again in the spring, and now, I have already seen the movie twice and am planning to go again ASAP. Jesse, you are the greatest! I will go to the movie again and again just to see you! The Santa Fe scene is my favorite in the movie...the whole movie rocks. I have never liked the way Broadway translates to the big screen but this is the definite exception. Rent is the best EVER!

Jesse,
I have been a fan of yours since the Rent origanl cast album hit stores and I heard you hit the high note during I'll cover you reprise. It was the first time I can remeber that music touched me to the point of tears. I had the CD long before I knew anything aobut the play and what was really going on. Once I finally saw the my love for RENT grew and I hoped against hope that it would be made into a movie. Sure enough it was and now I can't wait for it to be on DVD so I can watch it whenever I want and be touched all over again. You have a great voice and you are awesome in everything I have ever seen you in. Keep doing what your doing

Thank you again

I love this song sooo much
When I saw the movie, this song just made me totally sink into the whole thing
I like the home-video feeling of it that kind of makes you feel like it's happening right in front of you ^^
Was this actually shot on a subway or was it a set? Was it moving or stationary?
I love the dancing in this; Collins' spinning and when Angel and Collins swing towards the camera
Amazing!
