How do you think America or people who have never saw or heard of Rent before respond to the different types of lifestyles in the movie (mainly sexuallity)

What has been the best moment in creating this movie?
Posted by: Abbie on 11/03/05 at 03:31 PM
What was it like to come back to the Rent material after such a long break from Broadway? Is there anything new that you feel about these characters that you never felt before?
Also, for Mr. Columbus, what aspects of the stage version did you feel were the most important to include in the movie? That is to say, the Broadway show was very modern, unique, and made creative use of sets -- how does that translate into the film version?
Posted by: Marc on 11/03/05 at 03:37 PM
hey cast and crew!!!
i'm a huge rent-head, but i'm sure you already assumed that one!!
i'm just curious as how you adjusted the movie to the modern times. since the show originally opened and took placed in the mid-90's, was there any major updating that took place for the movie??
Posted by: caraaa! on 11/03/05 at 03:37 PM
A general question for the original cast members...
What was it like to step into the studio and onto sets with each other again after so long away from the story, to sing those beautiful songs and perform out Jonathan Larson's vision? Did it still feel the same as ten years ago, or different?
Posted by: Lizzie on 11/03/05 at 03:39 PM
to any cast member-
How has being in Rent changed your perspective on life?

Did anyone have any hilarious mess-ups during filming?

What was it like the first time you got to see the whole movie, completed?
Posted by: Lea on 11/03/05 at 03:42 PM
i was very worried when i first heard that a movie version of rent was being made. Rent is a musical that touches very close to my heart and i was lucky enough to see the original cast. i am very relieved to see that so many people who were involved in the original stage production are also nvolved in the movie. My fear was that the movie would not be true to the original, how do you feel about the way it came out?

This is a question I have been dying to ask any actor that portrayed Benny, but have not had the chance, so Taye...this is for you. Why does Benny so desperately want to be with Mimi? I get the fact that she's this hot woman that he probably views as some sort of trophy, but does Benny conveniently forget that Mimi is HIV positive? It is never said that Benny is HIV positive, so why would he engage in such risky behavior? Is there a deeper love that I'm not seeing? When you were developing Benny's character, did you think about that? What kind of man is Benjamin Coffin III?
Posted by: Suzanne on 11/03/05 at 03:47 PM
Hi, I've been wondering, which scene(s) had the greatest impact on you as an actor (or director) and as a person?
Posted by: Shoshana on 11/03/05 at 03:50 PM
Chris,
Rent is a musical that is both timeless AND specific to the 90s. Did you omit certain scenes/lines that might alienate new generations of RENT heads (as they might not "get" references) and or just because people don't talk like that anymore?
While I'm here, I've got to thank you again for your absolute devotion to this piece. It doesn't matter if you've got a thousand willing participants if the conductor doesn't know what he's doing-which you obviously do. Although I might be singing a different tune after seeing the movie... lol but I doubt it. ;)
Posted by: Ryan on 11/03/05 at 03:53 PM
This is mainly for Anthony- as I'm curious to his thoughts.
Do you think RENT- as a movie- is going to be 'good' for the Gay/Lesbian community?
The musical showed me these were people too- just as capable and loving as anyone else- not twisted, not sick- not wrong...Not just goofy guys on TV.
It changed my perspective on life and allowed me to be open with myself- for which I now have a wonderful girl in my life- who had been beside me all along as my best friend.
I've asked something along this line before- but I suppose it was overlooked...
So to simplify- do you think this movie will help to ease over the minds of some 'conservitives'...? And do you think it might serve as a new 'call to arms' if you will for movements in rights and fair treatment?

This is for the Rosario and Tracie: Having played these Characters on screen, would either of you ever play the characters on the stage?
This is for Chris: When is the projected release date for the RENT DVD/VHS? Will it include the deleted scences ("Goodbye Love part 2", "Halloween" "Love Heals")?
This is for Adam: Adam you had mentioned a few years ago in a Broadway.com interview that you would never play Roger on stage again! Is this still true? You also mentioned in the interview that you would want to play Mark sometime. Will you still want to play Mark on Broadway?
This ones for Idina: Will you ever return to the Gershwin and play the most popular role in contemporary musical theatre.... ELPHABA?
This is for Chris: What are you exspecting on Oscar night 2006?
The Cast: Oscar 2006?
This is my last question.... Can I get tickets to an advance screening! (It doesn't hurt to try!)
Posted by: Dhiraj Chand on 11/03/05 at 03:57 PM
This is a question for anyone from the original cast.
Do you think that the movie version is going to be even more effective at conveying the message than the musical?
It is a powerful message that everyone should hear, and I want to compliment yo uall on the amazing job you have done publicizing it, everytime I watch TV I see a commercial, everytime I pick up a magazine I see an ad. I cannot wait until Nov 23

To all the cast and/or Chris Columbus:
How has RENT changed your life?
Posted by: Jackie on 11/03/05 at 03:58 PM
Hey there!!
This question is for both the RENT cast and Mr. Chris Columbus. Since all of you have either been in or seen the origanal broadway show of RENT were you all very particular about putting in input about your characters and how and what should be put in the movie version of RENT?
Well you are all great!!!
Posted by: Sammy on 11/03/05 at 04:02 PM
i LOVE you guys, and i know you feel my sentiment, and i wish nothing but the WORLD to you all...
but i wanted to ask:
* are there fears that all/either of you have that this might be taken negatively?
* what do you personally want people to take away after watching this GREAT film?
* to the cast, is there anything that you had a vision of for the movie, that was done not to what you expected, beit postive or negative?
* are you going to be on the road to promote this film?
okay, i think imma stop there because i could go on... again, thank you to the cast and crew for this AMAZING gift!

For members of the OBC,
Being away from these characters for as many years as you all have been and having all certainly grown as actors, did you find it hard to revive your characters to the same way that you did back in 96 or do you feel as though you never left them? When reviving them, did you feel that they changed in similar ways as you have or did you rediscover your characters as they were?
Posted by: Emily on 11/03/05 at 04:04 PM
To Chris Columbus:
How exactly did you make this idea come to fruition? How did you find a writer(s) and actually get the ball rolling? Was the Larson family involved from early on with the idea? So many people have tried to do this before, including Spike Lee. And although we are open arms with Traci and Rosario, why didn't Fredi and Daphne join up? And with songs like "We're Okay" and "Christmas Eve" etc being gone from the soundtrack, is it safe to assume those segments were expanded into dialogue (esp the riot of course)? THANKS CHRIS! We're on a RENT countdown over here in Albany, NY!

Hey! WOW isnt this awesome! ! ! Lol anywho I am a total broadway fanatic and hope to be a broadway actress when i grow up, but i was wondering with a lot of hard work and real determination can anyone be an actor, actress? I mean I am a CA girl longing for NYC and such, I hope to go one day especially if it would be something like my first show! But is it possible for someone who has not taken voice lessons for their WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE but will soon and sings a lot, or a person who loves plays but has not taken any classes for it, to become a famous broadway actor/actress? THANKS cant wait for the movie love you all ESPECIALLY YOU IDINA (saw u and Rosario in the HIV AIDS commercial on TV LOVE YOU)Love always looking forward to RENT

Hey guys, I can't think of any question that hasn't already been asked a hundred times, so I just wanted to say that you are great! I like watching the video blogs. I just want to grab each and every one of you and give you a big kiss ang a bear hug! I've loved RENT for years, saw the play a bunch of times and it changed my life. Can't wait to see what the movie is like!

I'm such a huge fan of the show since it ran at NYTW, so, like most of the ?'s already up, this is about the cast :-D . First, for Rosario and Tracie - what was it like coming in as, well, the new kids in town (so to speak)?
And for everyone else, what was it like having them come in without their being in the show? Are we OBC fans just romanticizing the relationship that the Broadway cast had/has, or are you really as close-knit as we imagine you to be?
Thanks so much! I can't wait for the movie - 20 days!!!

Idina and Adam- Did you really go to the same high school and have the same orthodontist.
Adam- You are really hot.
Anthony- Did you use the same glasses you usually wear in the movie? -- kuz they look goooood.

A little question from the midst of the Atlantic Ocean.
I dont know exactly how it is with other countries beside America, but here in Iceland Rent is generally not very well known. Do you think that the movie will be an instant hit in Europe just as it probably will be in USA?
With lots of love
Inga from Iceland
PS. I have been trying to get information on when the movie will be shown here in Iceland, I hope it wont be as late as March or something... How are the openings in Europe?

To Chris Columbus/cast
Was the PG-13 rating for this movie a big surprise for you? Why or why not? Rent's debut on broadway was rather controversial, as the musical dealt with strong issues that aren't usually brought up in mainstream society. Do you think that the film version will spark similar controversy, being that some people may not approve of allowing their 13 year old children to be exposed to the different lifestyle?
Posted by: JIm on 11/03/05 at 04:28 PM
This is for any of the cast.
Now that you guys have gotten a taste of RENT again, would any of you consider going back to Bway as your character? Tracie and Rosario, does the movie make you want to try out your character on stage?
You guys cannot even fathom the gift you have given all of us. I can't say thank you enough.

was it hard for the cast and crew to juggle time between shooting the film and other events and appearences? how did every deal with the busy schedules, and if it was taxing on the mind and body did anyone have any methods for relaxing themselves and keeping them calm during filming.

I ♥ RENT.
Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 04:36 PM
This is a question for anyone in the original broadway cast.
Was it hard to step back into a role that you hadn't played for nearly a decade? And was there anything that you added to your character's personality and/or behavior after ten years of life experience and with the opportunity to view the world more closely?
And these are for Chris Colombus?
When you created the film what elements did you contribute that you felt were important to add?
Rent itself is a very touching story, but it portrays many controversial topics (homosexuality, drug addiction, AIDS, etc), do you feel that it is important to portray these controversial subjects as a part of everyday life to help gain an acceptance and respect for them? And did you add anything new to these subjects to make them more controversial at this present time in history?
I love Rent and I love everything that it stands for. I can honestly say that it has really made me view life differently and has made me more aware of the world outside of my own protected space. I have waited soooo long for the movie to finally get an opportunity to be made. It excites me that the majority of the broadway cast returned to play their roles, and that they were lucky enough to add two new talents to the cast, who can both to justice to the music and the charaters. And finally it is very nice to have an avid 'Renthead' as the director and to have Jonathan Larson's family there to help Rent reach millions of people around the world. You are all doing an AMAZING job and I look forward to November 23rd

For the entire cast/crew,
There seem to be two sorts of people: those who have never heard of RENT and those who are rabidly obsessed with it. How do you think the movie will affect that?
Also, are there any funny anecdotes that occured during the making of the movie?
Thanks so much!

Hey! I'm so in LOVE with the musical! It's awesome!
Rosario- How was it making out with Adam Pascal? Wow! You're so lucky! Ha ha!
Adam- Civillian is AWESOME! Which do you like doing better- acting or singing?

Hello RENT cast and director!!! I'm happy to ask you guys questions!
For the cast: Hi guys! When you guys started the theatre production, what did you guys do to get into character? And what did you do to make your character the way it was?
For the Director: Hi! When you hopped on board to direct this film, were you at all nervous about making it true to what Jonathan Larson presented? (From what I've seem, I'm sure you have :)
Thanks for listenting,

I believe that the real life grit that is embedded in Rent will take the movie to the Academy Awards. Do you expect the same Oscar treatment for Rent that was given Chicago?
Posted by: sally on 11/03/05 at 04:57 PM
The other night my friend and I got into a debate, that well turned into a gigantic argument over the matter of Rent being cross cultural. I feel that it is, based on the immense variety of people that come to see it from different backgrounds and cultures, and the storyline itself, the way it deals with many different issues facing society today and how it's characters are all from different cultures and backgrounds themselves. He flat out says it's not, that because he feels it doesnt have the mass appeal of a movie such as Titanic, or even a musical such as Annie, that it cannot be considered cross cultural. He feels that the storyline of the musical makes no difference to whether or not it's cross cultural, it's simply the amount of people from different demographics that have a desire to see it. The debate became very heated, mainly because the musical has been such a large part of my life the past 8 years and he barely knows the storyline. So i'm just curious on what any of your opinions are on the subject. Thanks so much!
P.s. I cant find the answer to this anywhere so I'm asking you guys, Is Rent still opening in New York and LA on November 11? I know that was the original date for those two cities but now all I've seen is November 23rd as the release date. But fandango has November 11th still up so I'm all confused. I have a friend coming in from Boston just so we can go see it that weekend. So if someone could let all of us here in NYC and those in LA know, i'm sure we'd all appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

As you've been in all three versions of the show, how do you think the characters have changed from the original NYTW script to the upcoming movie?
Posted by: elizabeth on 11/03/05 at 05:21 PM
hey, rent looks like it'll be an awesome movie!
is there any scare that the movie won't do as well in certain places in the U.S.? i live near oklahoma city, and >supposedly< (i'm not 100% sure), a few years back, a performance of Rent (it was performed by some sort of travelling company) got booed offstage here. so, i've been wondering if there's been any concern of releasing the movie here, and if so, if the movie's even going to be shown in very many movie theaters here.
anyways, the movie looks AMAZING!!! I can't wait to see it!

Did you have good chemistry ?
You both look so cute and sweet together!I'm just in awe when I see you both on screen together!

This is for the cast:
What is one song/segment from the original show you wish was not cut or changed to dialogue?
Posted by: Chris on 11/03/05 at 05:45 PM
a couple of questions...
for the OBC,
what lessons and feeling did you take with you from being in the show? have any of you ever seen the show as an outsider, after you were done with it? if so, did you take anything different from the watching the show, then being in it? (everybody)and how does it feel watching yourselves?
for rosario(BTW i love "kids") and tracie(BTW i love your hair)
when both of you first saw rent, what did you take from it? what are you trying to have others take away from it?
chris
this isn't a question more like a comment. i just wanna say, no matter what others say, you're a genius for hiring sara silverman as alexi darling. you get some major snaps for that.
Posted by: Stephan on 11/03/05 at 05:48 PM
This is for everyone...I have no doubt that the movie and the show will stand the test of time but do you think it will have the same emotional effect on audiences in 10, 15 or 20 years from now?
Also, if you could sum up the whole message of Rent in one word, what would it be?
I love you guys! You're the best!
Posted by: dawn on 11/03/05 at 05:49 PM
After seeing all the questions that have been asked, I doubt mine will ever be answered. But, I'll try
Idina: It seems like you just got off Broadway playing the role of Elphaba (by the way, you were spectacular!!!) was it hard to go back to, as you say, cowbells and cat suits?
Anthony: Adam has said before that he thinks it would be fun to play Mark, have you ever thought about the possibilities of being Roger?
Adam: Rent was probably the most straining show you all have ever done, was it hard to go back to playing a damanding role such as Roger?
Rosario: You are amazing! You were everything I had hoped for in a Mimi. Were you nervous about what people would think?
Everyone else I didn't have space for: What are your thoughts as to what the audiences reactions are going to be to Rent?
Later-
Andrew

When you first started discussing this movie, what kind of audience were you looking to get?
What are your craziest fan stories?
Will there be any advance screenings or midnight showings of the movie?

To anyone who wants to answer:
If you had to desribe the meaning or message of Rent in ONE word, what would it be?
Posted by: Jon on 11/03/05 at 06:12 PM
First off I wanted to tell you all how excited I am to see this movie. When I see a commercial come on I just get giddy. Ok now onto my question.
What parts of the Musical did you change/enhance to bring the screen version to life and draw in new audiences, and also how have you as the actors created an atmosphere that retains the musicals awesome story line yet create something so amazing that everyone can relate to? How did you plan to draw in audiences that were not particularly fond of the musical?
Posted by: KMH on 11/03/05 at 06:19 PM
-What did you guys do between takes? Any funny stories from the set that you want to share?
-Are you guys going to read reviews?
-To the OBC members, if you all of a sudden tonight you had to go on at the Nederlander, do you think you could pull it off? Do you remember enough of it?
Posted by: Amanda on 11/03/05 at 06:21 PM
To Chris Columbus:
You're no stranger to adapting beloved stories for the big screen, but how different was the pressure between bringing Harry Potter and Rent to the big screen? Secondly, how did Steve Chobosky become involved with the film and what was your collaboration like? Thanks for taking the time to read!
Posted by: Ryan on 11/03/05 at 06:22 PM
What was more nerve-racking/exciting: Performing Rent for the very first time on the Broadway stage years ago or seeing the film for the first time, not exactly knowing how it was going to turn out?
Thank you for all the inspiration and for having such a major affect on my life through your performances [and just for getting the message of Rent across!]. I can't say it enough!
Love, Courtney
PS. Are there going to be any promotions/signings/concerts of any sort once the movie is out?
Posted by: Courtney on 11/03/05 at 06:25 PM
Adam: I know that back in 2000 (or around there) you said you would never sing Glory at one of your gigs but you sang it at Joe's Pub last year, what changed you're mind? Also what's it like being the sex symbol of Broadway? (if he answers that I will die laughing)
Wilson: This is just a comment but you make a very pretty woman. :) Oh and I loved you singing the SOL solo on Regis and Kelly. Were you nervous?
Idina: You're one of the many actresses I respect in the Broadway community. Do you ever think about how much of a role model for young aspiring actresses, like myself, you are?
Taye: You're an amazing actor. I loved your show Kevin Hill, what was your reaction when it was cancelled? (I know it's not a Rent related question but...I thought I'd try)
I think that's it. Hope some of my questions get answered.
So much Rent love,
Sara

Do you have any advice to aspiring performers who wish to be on Broadway?
Posted by: Taylor on 11/03/05 at 06:28 PM
To the cast and crew,
I am such a big RENT-head thanks to Idina, if I hadnt seen her as the green girl in WICKED I would have probably never seen RENT, so thank you Idina for this awesome opportunity and experience. I just get so giddy when I see a commerical come on about it. 11.23.05 cannot come soon enough.
Idina this is for you--what is it like going from being in RENT through all of your other shows then to your TONY award winning performance as Elphaba (which touched and changed my life forever, thank you for being so kind at the stage door) back to RENT for the movie? would you ever do this with WICKED? You have such an amazing voice it just touches my heart everytime I hear it.
Taye this ones for you--- how does the stage and the screen differ. You have such a wonderful voice. Also what is it like to see Idina kissing Anthony and Tracie and acting as a lesbian?
Adam- how did going from a singer to an actor transform you and what has it done to change your life?
Anthony-- what is the best thing you have gotten from being an actor?
Tracie--you have such a wonderful voice, I love you as Joanne, how has being a newbie affected you in RENT and also what is it like to play a lesbian?
Rosario--You are a wonderful Mimi, what is it like to step into such a big role? What was your favorite moment?
Wilson--how does playing a drag queen affect your everyday life?
Jesse--what is it like to be famous in Law and Order then go back to RENT?
Chris---thank you thank you thank you for creating this movie, what was the hardest part of making a movie musical and how did the actors who were in the original cast contribute to ease some of the confusion?
Posted by: KMH on 11/03/05 at 06:29 PM
I was wondering if anyone in the cast or if Chris Colombus studied and researched Puccini's La Boheme while working on the play or the film? Did that research help any of you building your charcaters or the world of the play?

A lot of questions have been repeated multiple times so I'll try to be original.
-Were there any pranks you guys played on each other during filming or during the Broadway run?
-Are there any actors/actresses on Broadway who you would love to work with/or loved working with?
-Do you/would you like to do TV interviews and promotions (ie Leno) or would you hate it?
-What are some of your passtimes/hobbies/etc. besides musical theater, acting, and singing?
Posted by: Caroline S. on 11/03/05 at 06:35 PM
Hello! I was just wondering, why didn't the original Joanne and Mimi return for the movie?

Hi. I'm a total renthead but instead of asking a RENT question i wanted to ask you guys something (anyone can answer) Besides Rent what are some of your favorite shows?
Adam- What show did you enjoy doing more Aida or Rent?
Idina- Which did you enjoy more Wicked or Rent?
Rosario-After doing film and now Rent, and gentlemen of verona can we expect to see more of you on Broadway?

Ooh Yaaay.
-How do you keep your emotions from that of the character?
-What was different about playing your character almost 10 years later?
-Have you made any major changes from the play to adapt it to the movie?
More to come :) Eee, I'm excited.

we all know rent on stage isn't really a finished show because jonathan larson died before he finished it. do you think the ends you've tied would be the way he would want them?

How do you think the cast currently on broadway will take the movie?

I have the RENT movie wallpaper and someone was like..."Why do you have a bunch of models on your screen"
*WHICH MEANS, YOU'RE ALL GOOD-LOOKING!
Question for Cast: Do you expect us "Rentheads" to sing along during the movie?
Posted by: Brian M. on 11/03/05 at 06:58 PM
I saw the touring version of RENT at LSU last year and I am very excited that it is about to hit theatres as a movie. My question is, will RENT (like other movies) be released on DVD eventually? I would LOVE to add RENT to my DVD collection! :)

For the OBC, how does it feel knowing that you have been a part of something that have changed peoples lives in so many fantastic ways?
For Tracie & Rosario; has it sunk in completely just how big RENT is, and how you both are going to impact peoples lives in so many fantastic ways due to the popularity of it?
Posted by: Lindsey on 11/03/05 at 07:01 PM
I love all you guys but this question is for the ever-so-handsome Jesse...
You have been great in all the work you've done so far in your career. I would love to see you play leading man in a romantic comedy! And or, a bad guy! Would you ever consider doing a role in either?? And if so, who would you want for a leading lady in a Romantic comedy?

Will Rent come out in Europe at the same time that it's coming out in the U.S? (I'm going to be in London when it comes out here)

Do you guy have a "family" of friends like the one that's formed during "Rent"? Do any of your friends remind you of certain characters from "Rent"?
Posted by: Katie on 11/03/05 at 07:10 PM
Idina and Taye, has it been hard playing characters that absolutely hate eachother? Whenever you look at eachother, we can all see the love in your eyes.
Full Cast, what were your first responses when being told you were being considered for your roles?
Posted by: Allie on 11/03/05 at 07:10 PM
I have yet to see the stage production and have only listened to the Cast Recording.
My question for Chris Columbus is why do you feel a film version was neseccary? What does it offer that the stage version cannot?
(Not meant to be rude. A serious question).
Also - what was your favorite scene to film.?
Thanks!

Chris,
Do you think that the movie RENT has added more as oppose to taking away more? I understand you have added and taken away, but which do you think happened more?
Any cast member,
Do you believe that each character represents a little bit of Jonathan? Do any of you relate to your character?

Idina- How old were you when you first started writing your own music? What inspired you to do so?
Your music is so cleverly written and so meaningful.

To Chris and Anthony:
What was it like working together again, after so many years have passed since working on "Adventures in Babysitting"? What were the highlights, main differences, and similarities??
BTW - The trailers look amazing - they are emotional and beautifully shot. As well, thanks for communicating with us and having such a personal blog. We definetaly feel a part of the movie!

Idina-First off, i am a HUGE fan and i admire everything you do. my wuestion pertains to Over The Moon. I love the way you do it in the Original and Movie soundetracks, but there are some noticable differences between the two. What has the monolouge meant for you and how has your ways of performing it changed? thanks!

Short and sweet:
To each memeber of the cast:
What's your favorite song from RENT and why? (yes, I know it's hard to choose just one... mine's i'll cover you reprise)

Are any of you guys going to go see the film in theatres the day it comes out? Or hey, all the die-hards are going to the midnight showing on the 22nd. =)
Is the cast going to be on Ellen to promote the film? I want to see you all dance to "La Vie Boheme" w/ Ellen! haha.
Idina -- Where do you get all your cool hats? PS you are getting so much press right now, I love it!

hey rent cast and Chris.
I've been a renthead since i saw the original cast when I was six (i know, what was i thinking, seeing it that young) and it's held a special place in my heart ever since. I was just wondering, this is geared to any member of the original cast, what lesson, feeling or emotion did you get out of this movie that was different than the first time you did it? (for tracie or rosario, basically same queston but obviously not about the first time you've done it.) also, what were the emotions on the set when Jonathan's family was there watching the whole filming process? Thank you all so much! I can't wait to see my favorite musical also become my favorite movie!
Posted by: Samantha on 11/03/05 at 07:44 PM
I am SOOO excited about this film! :) Ok, i have 2 questions.
1. (for those from the original broadway cast) Coming back to do this film, after all of these years, what were some things that ya'll were able to realize or get a 'better grasp of', when thinking of RENT and what it stands for?
2. When did ya'll realize that ya'll had the talent to sing, and how do ya'll keep ya'lls voices so dang strong?!?
Thanks,
Colton Childs

Hello to all of you! I can't wait until Nov. 23!
Just a quick question:
What is going to happen to the blog after the movie comes out? Will it continue?
Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 07:57 PM
For the Cast:
what are your plans for the future? what projects will you be working on now?
For the OBC:
is there a sense of closure and completion now that the movie has been made? is there any remorse or sadness knowing that you will probably never play your titled roles again?
Posted by: Monika on 11/03/05 at 07:59 PM
Just a question or two:
Chris: How hard was it to get in touch of the original actors? Also, if it's possible to answer, why didn't Fredi Walker and Daphne decide to do the movie?
To the cast: This musical was a big impact on our society when it started, since we didn't really deal with AIDS and homosexuality. Now, nine years later, with shows like "Will and Grace", "Queer as Folk", the subject of same sex marraige, and the awareness of the homosexual community do you think it will have as big as an impact in that respect?
Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 08:01 PM
I know I'll probably come off as the bad guy in this sense, but I am a straight female who doesn't completely understand(or agree) with the gay community. I don't discriminate, but at the same time I don't really support it. However, I have the soundtracks and have read the script to the musical and really enjoyed it. I was able to connect with the HIV/AIDS situation as people close to me in my life have AIDS. My question to you is, do you think that this movie can be seen by the mass public on multiple levels not just homosexuality and aids, but show that people should respect(and if anything tolerate) other peoples life choosings even if they don't agree with it? Or that people are people no matter what and should be treated like people. Emerson has said "Let us treat men and women well, treat them as if they were real, perhaps they are" and that's another theme I gathered from this play/movie. What do you think?
Posted by: Jaye Belle on 11/03/05 at 08:02 PM
For Everyone: What one message do you hope those being exposed to Rent for the first time take away from the movie?
Note to Tracie: I know how proud your dad is of you and its great to see a "local" girl realize her dream!
Posted by: AEH on 11/03/05 at 08:04 PM
Hey guys! I just have to say I love you guys! The fact that your're making this movie is so incredible to me!! My question is we all talk about how RENT has affected our lives. Besides professionally, how has this show affected all of you? LOVE YOU GUYS! ADAM YOU ROCK!
Posted by: Rentchick22 on 11/03/05 at 08:08 PM
So maybe this will sound weird, but it's important I think: Do you think, during Over the Moon, it is right for people to moo at the screen, despite this NOT being an interactive showing of Rent? This has been a hot topic on the IMDb board, and I'd love to hear your views. I personally don't think it would be right, especially considering how many audience members will not be familiar with the show. Any thoughts?
Posted by: Colleen on 11/03/05 at 08:12 PM
I've got a real quick question for the cast: did any of you know early on that you wanted to be actors? How does it feel to really make it in such a hard industry?
Thanks for everything you guys do! You're all fantastic actors!

Hey, guys, I'm a big fan. I was wondering, what do you do to get into character?
Posted by: Holly on 11/03/05 at 08:25 PM
Are you worried at all about the movie not living up to its Broadway original? BTW, oh my god, I CANNOT wait to see the film.

There are so many life lessons built into RENT. The obvious one: no day but today, live life to the max every day. But did any of you realize any hidden lessons during the making of the movie? Jonathan Larson seemed to be such a complex person, I'm sure he added more depth to the story during the making of the musical. Any new discoveries during the making of the movie?
Posted by: Denise on 11/03/05 at 08:32 PM
First of all, I would like to say that I am totally in love with RENT!!! It's such an amazing story! You guys are doing a great job! You all have such beautiful, powerful voices. I'm insanely jealous. If I could sing half as well, I'd be happy. But, on with the questions.
Do you think it was harder doing the movie or the play version?
Is it hard playing a lesbian/gay person, even though you aren't one?
Did you guys keep in contact after the play, or was this the first time you've seen/talked to each other since it ended? (Obviously Idina and Taye have, but everyone else?)
Do you have a favorite scene(s)? (If so, which one(s)
I guess that's all for questions. Thank you again for making this so special. I live in the midwest and don't get a chance to go anywhere to see anything even somewhat close to Broadway, much less RENT. I'm really glad that Chris Columbus cast most of the original cast, because I'm a huge fan. Thanks.

No question, more of a comment!
I was listening to some of the sounds track this past Saturday, not ever considering or having any knowledge a movie was being made.

I'm a huge Renthead! The musical has touched my life so much, and I am sure it has touched others as well. Being such a big fan, I'm wondering how much you had to change the musical to put it on film. I know the cast has said the movie has stayed true to the musical, and that is encouraging. I guess I just want to make sure that Rent is preserved for future generations.
Good work to the cast and crew! You guys are amazing! I love the soundtrack and the cast sounds amazing. OBC, your voices have matured and sound even better. (I still cry when I hear "I'll Cover You Reprise.") And thanks to Chris for making the movie! You rock!

When are you guys gonna give us Left-Coasters some lovin? Idina never did a San Francisco gig (that I know of), and the Nov. 11 LA release was postponed! We are all so disappointed that NYC (as great as it is) holds all your hearts and all of us just have to gaze toward the dawning sun so wistfully. So... are there plans to do some great West Coast events I can take part in in the works? New Years party? Concert? Anything?

For the members for the original cast:
How has the RENT expeirence changed for you?
For the new people:
What did you really get from working on this film that will be with you forever?
For Chris and other workers:
How did you make sure that through the pressure of thousands of fans that you made the right choices for the film?

Thankyou all so much for giving us the opportunity to interact with you! It means so so much to all of us!Now to the questions! There are thousands of avid rent-heads in Australia and around the world. Will you be attending the premiere of Rent in Australia? Do you believe that the project is as universal as the stage - production, or perhaps even more so?
Thanks again for the opportunity to see all your remarkable talents first hand! As an aspiring actor, you all make the arduous and difficult journey through the field seem worth it beyond comprehension!!
Much love,

Dear ADAM:
My friend and I have a question about Roger: Maybe this will be addressed more in the movie, but did he go to rehab? We know he’s “just coming back from half a year of withdrawal”, so when did he quit doing drugs and why? Was it right after he found out about April dying/him getting AIDS? We also noticed that you sing in Life Support, the line that says “reason says I should have died three years ago”, so does that mean that it’s been three years since April died/he finds out he had AIDS?
We can’t wait for the movie, thanks for taking our questions!!!

What scene was the hardest to bring from stage to life on film and why? Aside from minor adjustment was there any scene from the play that had to be taken out or completely changed?
p.s. I just wanted to say that I love all of you,you all are so great. I saw you in 1996, when I was 11; I was a little confused to say the least, but loved the music. I have since seen the play numerous times, and have come to understand it more and more, each time. I can’t wait to see the film!

TAYE/IDINA: Seeing that you're both so busy with other things, how fulfilling was it to be able to work on the same project together-again?
JESSE:Why hasn't Dick Wolf had a musical episode of Law&Order yet?...he better recognize...
WILSON:What are three things that you cannot part without? (in life, in work, whatever...)
ADAM:Would you encourage your children to follow in your footsteps? (in terms of a musical theatre profession...)
ROSARIO/ANTHONY:You have impecible, amazing, stunning vocal abilities. What are some eating/drinking tips you'd give to fellow actor/singers?
TRACIE:Words can't express properly how happy I get everytime I see the trailer or the comercial, or a poster...You've got an incredible talent, and I'm sure you know that. My question: what would you have done differently between the day you got the call saying you got the part, & right now, while reading this question to you?

THIS IS TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO WISHES TO ANSWER:
THE JOURNEY OF "RENT" HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN A LONG ONE WITH SO MANY AMAZING SURPRISES. DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS MOVIE VERSION OF THE SHOW WILL BRING THE SAME LIFE AND ENERGY AS THE STAGE, AND IN TURN CONTINUE THE JOURNEY? WHAT MAKES THIS SHOW SO INCREDIBLE POWERFUL?
i cannot cannot CANNOT explain how extremely excited i am for this movie to come out.
maybe not even because i want to see it- i already know RENT and the characters and the stories, the laughter and tears...
i'm excited to watch the WORLD fall in love with it as i have.
i'm excited to share my love of life with every person that goes to the theatres.
RENT truly unites us all.

Hey everyone! This is just a general question directed toward the OBC. When RENT was just being worked on, did you guys come up with any kind of background stories for your characters to help you relate to them? Did Jonathon give you anything to work with along those lines? A friend and I were discussing it the other day, just general things like "why are things not so good between Mark and his father?" "where is Angel's family?", things like that. My friend was saying she occasionally imagined Mark and Maureen's breakup. (for some reason, she imagines things flying across the apartment, which is an amusing mental image.) Do you guys have any information like that you'd be willing to share?
Thank you so much! I don't know how I'll survive another 3 weeks, but I'll try. Much love to everyone!

First of I want to say thank you to the cast and Chris Columbus for even giving us the opportunity to ask questions. You guys really do care about the fans!
So my question is:
After viewing the final cut of the movie, are you guys happy with the end result? I know that several members of the OBC weren't exactly satisfied with the OBCR. Did you go into the recording process with more insight so that this time around you don't have regrets years from now?
Thanks so much for giving us this movie. Btw... the cinematagraphy looks absolutely AMAZING!

I am watching "Team America" the other day, and saw for the first time the paraody of "RENT." I know that it isn't necessarily the most flattering parody but, it goes beyond that. RENT has made such an impact on our society that ten years later it is still being parodied. What are you feelings on that? On the fact that you, your musical (and hell, even your scarf Anthony) are still being recognized.
Posted by: Evan Taksar on 11/03/05 at 09:01 PM
I just want to say how cool it is that all of you have been so open with us fans of the show. I'm sure it's obvious that Rent means so much to so many people across the globe and I really hope that this movie brings even more people to this wonderful story. Anyway, my question is for Tracie. We all know that you started out as a Renthead yourself. What was it like for you, as a Renthead, to go into this movie and get to act alongside most of the OBC?

How do you think this will affect RENT at the Nederlander? Will the environment there change a lot?
And do you think the extremely positive reaction to the movie (I guess I shouldn't assume...) will lead to another RENT tour? I live in Nebraska and have seen the musical 3 times, but would kill for another opportunity.

Anthony,
As the cast member who has been with the show the longest, from the earliest workshop in '94 to the film, what would you say has been the most rewarding experience of being part of Rent?

You all totally make my life right now! Congrats for completing this incredible task and I know there won't be a moment during the film when I won't be crying out of pure amazement!
Question for the returning cast: How have your performance experiences since the original run of the show influence the way you play your character this time around? Idina- Is there any Elphie in this Maureen? How about Anthony and Charlie Brown? And more generally, what life experiences in the past nine years have influenced how you brought these characters back to life?
Idina, I absolutely love you! I was so proud to have seen Wicked your final week of performances! My friend (a newer but still as devoted fan of yours) and I dressed up as you for Halloween! She was Maureen in the cat suit, and I was Elphaba! Hopefully I'll be able to see you perform again, you have had a profound impact on me!
To the rest of the cast: You all make me so proud! Through these blogs I feel as if I have gotten to know each of you personally, and your love you have for eachother and your fans and your message is way beyond admirable! Love you all!

i beleive yall understand how important this play is. For me there is a magic with each guitar stroke and every piano riff it shines so special that when i left the theater the first time i saw it i was in aww, then the soundtrak the new as well obc i knew that this was something i wanted to do. with that said i hope to one day be in this show a young black man from baltimore(i heard T. Thoms is from b-more big ups) who no one believes will get the chance, i want to know how it fill to have made it happen to get the chance to express these charecters in your own way to express the music in the way only you can , to create the essence of rent.

IDINA, I would like to just start off by saying that I respect and admire you more than anyone else. While most young girls become infatuated by often shallow hollywood celebrities your career, life journey, and accomplishments intrigue me to no end. As a young Jewish, Canadian performer I aspire to one day, perform on Broadway. In love with the stage, crowds, and the process of it all I would love to hear first hand what it took to get you where you are today. You are an inspiration to aspiring Broadway performers and I so often hear stories of struggling to the point of living off of a diet of saltines in a rat infested whole-in-the-wall. I would love to ask you how long it took to land a role on Broadway, what you did in between auditions/shows to support yourself, and how and where you kept doing what you loved before your Broadway career took off. In reality, what do you think it takes? You posess that X-factor that so many dream of... while that is not something that can be taught, any thoughts on how to make people see that extra sparkle? I know the competition is tough and so, to conclude in the form of a question, how did you make yourself stand out? Again, thank you for following your dreams and being an inspriation and role-model to so many. You are truly a remarkable talent.

Whose idea was it to have former Rent cast members appear as extras in the movie? Do you wish more people from past productions of Rent could have been included?
When was the last time you saw Rent performed onstage? What was it like being on the other side?
If you could play any other role in the movie other than your own (regardless of gender, physical appearance, etc.), who would it be and why?
What's your favorite song not sung by your character?

Mr. Columbus,
When you're set to direct a film, what is the process that you usually follow? How do you get a greater sense of the world of the film?
Was this process different for you during the preparation RENT, being that it's a piece so influenced by the theatre?
What steps did you take to truly bring your vision of RENT to life?

hey cast and crew! this is my first comment on the blog. ah im excited! :)
I love you all so much. The eight of you are probably some of the most talented people i can ever think of! When you all sing, and your voices are put together, it is just INCREDIBLE. Really. Of course the original six are amazing, but I must say I was worried about having a new Joanne and Mimi, and WOW..what a kick in the face that was! I was sooooo incredibly impressed. I apologize for the length of this comment, but I really feel the need now to give a shout out to the cast. Gosh I am such a loser.
**Idina, WOW. Where do I even begin with you! From Rent, to Wicked, to The Wild Party (holy crap you are amazing in The Juggernaut. Goodness gracious.) you NEVER cease to completely blow me away. You are beautiful and probably have one of the best voices I have ever heard. You are my hero and I aspire to be like you every day. Thank you for being such a role model to me and so many others!
**Rosario, you kick soo much butt in Out Tonight; it is becoming one of my favorite songs because of you. You and Tracie are doing suchh a great job as a part of RENT!
**Tracie, I swear, you make me cry everytime you open your mouth! Whenever I listen to Love Heals I rewind your part ("So if you fear the storm ahead..") like 56 times in a row. SO beautiful. I wish I could sing like that.
**Adam, first off, you are gorgeous! :P you have always been one of my personal favorites and your character has as well. I love the "rock star" tone of voice you have; it is just soo great! keep up the great work.
**Taye, I must say you do a wonderful job as Benny. Ive always thought that when a character makes the audience hate him/her and be annoyed by them the whole time because it's part of their personality, they they are doing the right thing and its what I call great acting. So, dont take it as an insult when I say that sometimes it's like that! like "come on! dont make them pay the rent! take some pity!" haha oh wow, I love ya. PS..i think you sound amazing on the movie soundtrack!
**Jesse, from Law and Order to RENT you are an amazing actor. You just rock in everything that you do! Quite an amazing person. everytime i listen to Ill Cover You (reprise) i just CRY! you put soo much emotion into it and wow, its just amazing.
**Wilson, first off, Law and Order: SVU is a show i am OBSESSED with, and when I saw you in the one episode I about DIED!! I loved it. Anyway, you do suchh an incredible job as Angel. I applaud you greatly for it!! I also applaud you for wearing those heels. As a woman I dont even know if I could do it!! haha :)
**Anthony, last BUT NOT LEAST! What to say. You are simply amazing. They honestly picked the best person ever to play Mark. You put soo much into the show and you just make me love it. you and Adam just ROCK in What You Own. It is probably my favorite song in the second act. You are sheerly amazing! by the way, I loved you in Law and Order: SVU as well!! thats one of my favorite episodes hehe
My gosh........I cant believe I actually did this. How big of a loser am I, really!! I hope you guys actually read these, cause I would feel incredibly stupid if you didnt. :)
I LOVE RENT!!!!!!!!!

Do you feel that this film will serve a large purpose in the world?
What social questions do you expect/hope to be raised when this film is viewed by the world?
What was your inspiration for coming to work everyday?
What's everyone's favorite color?! (little bit of a joke, but I'm always interested...)

I've heard some people speculating as to whether "mooing" would be appropriate in the movie theatre during "Over the Moon."
Do you think it's ok for fans to be interactive with the movie (i.e. mooing, clapping, singing) as with the musical, or do you think that it could be considered disruptive to other viewers (who maybe know nothing about Rent, or came to see a movie, not hear other people)?
Posted by: sammi on 11/03/05 at 10:39 PM
Six out of Eight of you guys have done the show now both on stage and in the movies. My question for you is, nine years ago, you walked into these roles and basically interpreted Johnathan's creations as individual actors in an off-broadway performance. It is now almost a decade later and the show has such a huge fanbase as well as the fact that many other actors have played your same roles and adapted them in their own way. My question is, going into the movie, did you find yourself more trying to appease what RENT has become or what it was in the first place?
For Tracie and Rosario, obviously since you were not established as these characters as the rest of the OBC, do you feel more pressured to do justice for the fandom? Many fans concentrait on you two because you are new and unfamiliar...did this affect your roles in any way? Or did it feel to you like you were joining a cast on a long run on Broadway?
For Chris. First of all I just found out the other day that you went to high school with a friend of mine's dad which I thought was kind of cool. Now for my question. RENT is obviously very different than anything else you have made as a director. What are some new aspects as a director that you have brought to this film that are new experiences for you?
Thanks everyone and I am eagerly anticipating the release!

Hey! Does anyone have any weird quirky things that are made fun of often by any other cast members?
Do you think some of the added material, not in the show, helps introduce the characters better?
Are there any interesting or embarrasing stories that occured on set?
Thanx soooo much 19 days!!!

First, I want to tell all of you how important Rent has become to me. I have two questions.
To: Everyone
Out of all the characters in Rent, which character do you idenfy with the most? (either the character you played or another)
To: Cast
If you would play character, other then the one you played what character would you choose to play?
Thanks for all the time you have both put into Rent and into making sure the fans are included in the journey.

Just wanted to let you all know that I am looking forward to seeing this picture very much (even though we have to wait until March 2006 over here in the Netherlands): what I've seen so far in clips and stills looks amazing!
Only question I can think of that probably hasn't been asked a zillion times before is if we will get some kind of official European premiere as well, with (some of) the cast and Chris?
Anyway, have lots of fun with the rest of the promotions for the movie and may it be a blast at the theatres!

Dear Taye and Idina,
Can I babysit your kids? (Should there be any!)
;-) Love you!

anthony - i seem to remember somewhere that you mentioned that you had a really good funny/embarrasing story from the obc days, but that you were saving it for whenever you get on something like jay leno. that may very well happen soon, but if it doesn't, will you ever tell us? :)
tracie - the movie and all the promoting and recognition you're getting must be a (well deserved) big leap for you! what it is like? are you enjoying it, do you get nervous for things like the today show?
rosario - you just seem like you're in love with life. :) if you could give us one piece of advice, what would it be?
adam - at this point in your life, are you pursuing music or acting more?
for everyone - one of those classic questions: if you could eat dinner with three people from the past or the present, who would you choose and why?
much love, xoxoxox

I actually have a question for the crew -
What was it like converting something that's normally done on a stage into the 'real world'? The choices for things like settings/sets, costumes, lighting, etc. seem rather endless. Was it hard to pick what you wanted to do?
Thanks!
Posted by: Janelle on 11/04/05 at 01:22 AM
Ohhh man, I'll definitely be looking forward to this one =)
This isn't really a question, but I've been really wanting to hear each cast member comment about their character, like do a short analysis (not to sound like an english teacher, lol). I just think it would be neat to see what you guys have to say on each of your characters, about anything - their emotions, their complexity, their feelings etc., and how you portrayed that in your acting.
Also, other ppl have asked this one - any funny moments or bloopers while you were shooting?
Thanks and rock on!

First off thank you all so much for all your hard work and dedication to this film!!! The first performance I saw of RENT was in 1998 and I've seen it every time it has hit St. Louis since. Every time I see a tralier I get chills, the same way I do each time "Mark" walks out on stage. My biggest fear about the movie is that I will start singing along without knowing it.
Ok, now for my question. I guess it should be addressed to Mr. Columbus....
How did you feel about the PG-13 rating? I can see on the one hand it being a positive because it will allow more people the opportunity to take part in the amazing experience that is RENT. At the same time I worry that perhaps maybe some of the intensity of the stage production was lost in the translation. I know you have commented that none of the lyrics or dialogue had to be changed or cut, so maybe we just lucked out with the MPAA?
Like all the other RENT-heads I am counting the days until the film is released! My boyfriend and I are treating each other to the film for our birthdays, I can't wait to see how he reacts to the movie (he's a complete RENT virgin.)
Thanks again to the entire cast and crew and especially the Larson family! It means so much that through your loss and grief you could see how important Jonathan's message was and allowed him to leave us this amazing gift...Life, Love, Strength, and Song.
With deepest respect and admiration to you all,
Kelly
P.S. Anthony- can't wait to get a copy of your book!
Posted by: Kelly on 11/04/05 at 02:29 AM
Cannot wait to see the movie!!
To Idina and Taye- how is working on the set with the other??? Do you get all flirty with each other while at work??!? You two are the cutest couple ever!!!!
Love you all!!!

Adam, how was it filming One Song Glory? Its one of my favorite songs. Was it different then doing it as a live perfomance?
Posted by: Greg on 11/04/05 at 03:53 AM
Chris, have Anthony's acting skills improved since 1987? (Not that Adventures in Babysitting wasn't the coolest movie ever!)
To the guys, boxers or briefs?
Roasrio and Tracie, since doing the movie, would you ever consider doing Rent on stage?
Posted by: Amanda on 11/04/05 at 03:59 AM
Seeing as I'm living in France (and so the premiere here isn't until April 12), I'd like to know if you're going to do promption here, and, if you know, who will be coming?
And also, why isn't RENT released in the Nordic countries
(Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland)?
You're in my thoughts - Chris, the cast, the Larson family - everyday!
Love from a faithful (Norwegian) fan in France, Anne-Inger

Hey guys...I'm also excited awaiting for the movie release. And as for the dvd release it will be pre-order should it become available.
Here's my question...Is it hard to come out of character once your scenes/or filiming is done?
Have a great day.

How has making a movie version of this wonderful show changed each of your lives? Has it brought any of you closer together?

Rent is such an amazing story that will be celebrating its ten-year reunion shortly. How does it feel to know that you are a part of a musical that is so widely loved?
Also for Chris Columbus: What pressures did you face in trying to keep RENT as close to the original as possible?
Posted by: Anastasia on 11/04/05 at 05:32 AM
Hey all!!!!
I do have two questions
First of all, how do you guys feel about you guys becoming popular Halloween customes this past year??? Especially Anthony and Rosario.
Second, do you feel that the movie is getting enough press or being overshadowed by a movie like Harry Potter?
Posted by: Blake on 11/04/05 at 05:34 AM
Hey guys, I just have a general question for everyone involved in the film. What are your feelings about how Jonathan would feel about the film adaptation of RENT? I know that it was still a work in progress when he passed and I am just curious as to how you and how his family feels Jonathan would have reacted to this adaptation. From the few tastes we have gotten from this site I am sure that he would be thrilled, but I wanted to get the points of view of people who worked closely with him as RENT was being made.
God bless you all!

To the members of the OBC:
Many of you will again be reviving these characters for the 10th anniversary benefit, so my question is: Do you, or do you think you ever could, get tired of playing these same characters?
Posted by: Colleen on 11/04/05 at 05:43 AM
hey guys.
Before I get started, I just wanted to thank you all for giving me something I have been looking for my whole life: a place and a way to belong. Becauseof RENT, I was finally able to become and accept Who I Am, and even more importantly, I know now that I am not alone in my choice of lifestyle. You have also helped me to com eout of my shell and after years of wishing, I finay got into theatre. Thank you for giving me a place to be.
My question for al of you is: What was the energy and the mood like when you guys first started to sing Jon's songs again, together, for the first time in several years? Also, if any of you could, what would you change about the film? For instance, would you have liked to have done Christmas Bells, added, or taken away from any of the scenes, etc?
Once again, thank you all so much. You are my inspiration, and if not for you, I would have never had the guts to be myself. I love you all very much.

Is there anything that you wish was in the movie that was in the play? Or something in the movie that you think should have been in the play? And if you have seen the movie: Were you scared that it wouldn't be up to your expectations? If you haven't seen the movie: Are you scared that it won't be up to your expectations?
These questions are for everybody!! Cast, Crew, I really don't care.
Oh one last question: After the movie are you going to keep posting on the blog or are you going to just stop?
Posted by: Megan on 11/04/05 at 06:12 AM
Jesse,
Now that you've worked on a popular TV show (Law & Order) for awhile and you've finished filming this movie, which mode of entertainment do you prefer, TV or film? What are the major differences between the two? Can we expect to see you in more movies?

Question to alL!
What is your favorite Show you have ever done? eh...eh...
Posted by: Thomas! on 11/04/05 at 06:35 AM
I know Rosario has been doing most of the promoting of the movie, but will any of the rest of the cast be on any talk shows or whatever?
Posted by: brad on 11/04/05 at 06:41 AM
This is a question for the OBC.
I have heard that songs that were not put into the movie are used as diagolue in it. If this is true, Was it weird for you to speak these 'songs' that you know so well?
Posted by: Hayley on 11/04/05 at 07:02 AM
To Chris Columbus and Idina Menzel -
I think I may have to second the question asked above. Is the movie going to be presented in a manner where Maureen breaks the "fourth wall" of the screen and looks at the camera and invites the audience to moo? Is it proper to moo during the movie?

Hi there, all.
With the release date fast approaching and television spots showing up more and more frequently, it's hard to ignore the attention that RENT is getting.
For the most part, though, the opinions I've seen have been from those people involved in production or from the RENTheads that will adore the film, regardless. While I'm sure, going by what I've seen, that I'm one of those people who is going to love RENT, it worries me that the few opinions I've seen from those who have no history with the show have been bitterly negative. From as objective a standpoint as you can give, how do you believe the moviegoing population that has never heard RENT before will accept the film, both from a technical and from an entertainment point?
Best of luck in the upcoming weeks!
Posted by: Genevieve on 11/04/05 at 07:15 AM
That's so great of you guys to answer questions.
I actually have a question for Idina. (as do most people!)
Idina,
I know that you're in See What I Wanna See right now. I saw it last week, my mom drove me from Philadelphia, and you were amazing! I was in the 2nd row! And I love the premise of the show. It really made me think about life and the way in which people view life.
Anyway, since you're currently busy, will you be promoting RENT at all? If you are, when? Can you guys make a list on the blogs of when and if you'll be on tv? Thanks! You're all amazing!
xoxo,

RENT is an amazing musical, I'm really enjoying the soundtrack! It's meant a great deal to me over the years. I am very excited about the motion picture. I have two questions for Taye and Jesse! Taye, do you have anymore plans to do more musicals? And Jesse. When you were first offered the part of Tom Collins, did you ever imagine you would have the success that has followed you since then?
Posted by: Erica on 11/04/05 at 07:22 AM
This is for anyone.
How are the people in your personal life, (family, friends, significant others, what have you) handling all the press and fame surrounding this movie? Is is strange to be spending time with them and see yourself in a commercial or have someone come up to you on the street? Do any of you have major stage-parents? :)

Dear all cast members,
hey! those clips from the RENT musicals are simply amazing! gd job guys!
well i've got one little question for you guys:
to the original cast: will any of you by any chance will be performing your amazing parts on the broadway stage again?
to the 'newbies':are you interested in performing your role on broadway? will you be doing this in the future?
thanks!

RENT has been a pivotal part of theater history as well as some people's lives; my own included. I believe RENT's message of love, acceptance, and family has helped mold young minds and prevented prejudice.
How does it feel to be part of not only what is cleary an amazing show (and now motion picture), but also a voice and a teacher to society?

This is for Idina..
Was is hard transitioning from a wicked witch to a performance dancer? I never saw Wicked, but I have the soundtrack and you are great! I also have the soundtrack to Rent. You sound so different. The two characters are two different personalities! I like all the songs that you sing in both! Can't wait until November 23rd!

Hello cast and crew,
First of all, thank you so much for being so available to your fans. Very rare, and very true to what I've read about how Jonathan Larson would have wanted things. From seats going for $20 on Broadway to his cast being a part of the community at-large, I definitely think this is something he would be extremely proud of. You've done him a great service.
Which leads me to my first question: Is there any kind of homage, subtle or otherwise, to Jonathan that we can see on the screen? Similar to the way the cast would "send applause up" to Johnathan after a show, I'm wondering if there will be something inherently "Jonathan" that will be visible in the picture?
My second question is probably more for the Original Broadway cast than anyone else. You guys know the story of RENT as well as the characters better than probably anyone, because it was you that shaped the characters and made the story complete. You were given a framework to work in and did your magic and now we have what we have. Looking at it from the characters prespectives, if they had free will to go outside of the script, what do you think each person would change in the events we see over the year in RENT? Is there a decision or action that takes place in the show that you think is particularly decisive that the character could choose differently or more wisely? I hope this question makes sense, because I know what I'm trying to say and even I am having a hard time following my thoughts here.
Anyway, thanks so much for your time. I simply cannot wait to see this movie.
Sincerely,
David P. Chesher

Adam and Anthony, I saw you when Rent came out on Broadway. Let me just say, you two are wonderful, but I have a question.
Was it harder to do What You Own on Broadway or in the movie? And is it going to be different then what I saw in the Broadway musical?
Love ya lots!

I would like to echo Shoshana Marc and Monika and ask about the relevancy of some of the themes of RENT 10+ years later. So much has changed since the 1990's - especially New York City and Alphabet City. It's more than just changes in "passing fads." It feels like a completely different place now - perhaps the sort of place that Benny wanted it to become then. Do you think that the film will help people to remember the 1990's? As NYers, what lessons do you think we can take from the film about that time and about New York today?
Also - I hope that Taye will answer Kristin's question about the relationship between Benny and Mimi. And as an aside - if that Kristin is the Kristin with whom I waited on the Rent Line for tickets four times in high school - email me, and we can go see the movie together! (billiemoon at yahoo)
Thank you to everyone for making this movie!

I know that this was asked earlier, but I'd really like to know if you guy expect Rentheads to sing/ moo along in theatres when we see the movie. I'm mooing no matter what :)
Also, for the cast... how do you guys feel about becoming movie stars? Are you looking forward to the recognition that you're going to get, or are you a bit nervous about it?
Posted by: Nikki on 11/04/05 at 08:35 AM
To Chris Columbus:
What were some of the specific obstacles you faced transitioning Rent from Broadway to a motion picture? We are aware that scenes and songs were cut, additional dialogue and scenes added, but were such transition changes difficult to make without Johnathan Larson?
To the Cast:
A number of people in the world are not Rentheads like myself and have no idea what this movie is about. If you were to try to convince them to see it, what would you say?
Thank you for this opportunity. I have always been a huge fan of Rent (expecially Idina and her unbelieveable voice).

Anthony, do you still do college tours? If so, how do I go about scheduling one?
For the cast, how closely do your interactions onscreen mirror your offscreen relationships?

Hello,
I would like to take two of my children (8 & 11)to see Rent. I really don't know what a PG-13 is. I know the "PG" stands for "Parental Guidance," but that's all I know. I realize that their will be scences of people or a person dying of AIDS; we have done volunteer work at hospitals so they are familiar with death. However, I don't want them seeing any inappropiate love scences. They are very excited to see Jesse Martin's performance. My 8 yob,is studying Classical Education, at home (we homeschool), and feels a connection with Jesse because of his Classically Trained background.

To the entire cast and crew:
If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only have one thing with you, what would it be?
Also, what are you guys planning to do around the time that RENT comes out? Like are you going to do any late night talk shows, etc?
How do you handle us crazy RENTheads? Is it fun or does it ever get old (or even scary)?
And Adam: Will you marry me???

A question for anyone and everyone willing to answer it:
Now that Rent is finally a movie, it will be much easier for more and more people to experience it in the future. With that prospect, how well do you think the story and the music will stand the test of time? Do you think that Rent will be considered a "classic?" Will it still be finding new fans 50 years from now?
And of course, great work to everyone, I can't wait for the movie.

Hi,
Director(Chris Columbus):-
What/How did you envision Jonathan's musical would be liked for the movie and how does it DIFFER from your own vision/perspective in the midst of shooting the movie with the cast?
Casts:-
a) OBC:-
With full knowledge that this musical has changed your life around. After tiresome/on-going tours and marketings, what are the new things/obstacles that you guys are experiecing/facing during those periods?
b) Rosario Dawson & Tracie Thoms:-
Awesome works comes with great compliments. While working with the OBC is everyone's dream and a life changing experience. What are your elaborations and stories? How did you 2 REALLY prepare?
Lastly, what is RENT to you all?
Appreciate the works and efforts that all had strive it, even the uncredited, into the movie. Jonathan's family is a blessing to all of us because til today they still live with his dreams and bring forth the movie to us. As for the cast, thanks for taking time to shape up the charaters and entertain us in many ways. God Bless.

I am fairly new to the 'Renthead' scene, but have always been a fan. I saw the show on Broadway for the first time with my fiancee and have been enamored with the show ever since.
Two questions for you all:

Idina, Taye, Anthony, and the rest of the RENT crew do it again! And I am so excited about it...Hey I'm Jameson Corrie...i'm 13 years old and this show is definately one of my all-time favorites! I'm seeing the movie the day it comes out then the next week going from Pittsburgh, PA (where i live) to NYC to see the show live on Broadway...i actually do performing myself and i have an audition for The Lion King in March 06...i perform w/ pittsburgh musical theater i take ballet, voice, jazz, tap, and acting...Therefore i am even more excited for RENT
I am also a huge fan of Wicked and I was actually supposed to see one of the shows when Taye was with Idina as Fiyero...but unfortunately couldnt make it..
Idina is one of my favorites...keep up the amazing work

This is really for everyone...what do you want to see happen with this film? What kind of reception/reaction would you view as a "success" for the movie version of Rent?

Three Questions 1 for each Idina, Tracie, and Wilson...
Idina---What was it like playing something totally different from you (Maureen) in front of the camera and on Broadway? Was it harder in the movie because you and Taye are married?
Tracie---In general, was it hard to play a character in love with another character whos husband was on set? Did it make you feel nervous?
Wilson---How different/Was it different playing a woman for most of the show for you?

To the Original Cast Members...
How did it feel stepping into your same role, but acting some scenes out with a different Joanne or Mimi? Had it become second nature to adopt the roles that you didn't even think about it, or did Tracie and Rosario bring about a different feel to RENT in which you had to adopt your character accordingly.
Thanks so much! I can't believe the wait is almost over! I finally bought the cast recording and everyone sounds absolutly amazing. You guys rock!!

Hi. This one is for the cast. Were there any inside jokes, or rituals you had or anything like that?
And to anyone who would know, are the lines about Joanne's Doc Martens included in the film? I know it sounds weird, but I've been dying to know.
And to Idina (you don't have to answer this), is there any chance of you doing a concert in upstate NY *coughALBANYcough* anytime? Because I would totally go.
Posted by: justine on 11/04/05 at 11:55 AM
Um, first, I love you all. And Adam, if you were not already married and like, 20 years older than me, I would ask you to marry me.
But these questions are for Idina and Anthony.
Idina- When will your new album be released? I am so excited!
Anthony- When is your book coming out? I cant wait to get it and read it!

To any OBC cast memember:
Have any of you considered going back to broadway to do RENT again?
Posted by: Kelly on 11/04/05 at 11:59 AM
Rosario -- We all know Tracie was a RENThead, but had you ever been interested in the show before? Had you ever seen it, or listened to the CD? Were you approached for the part of Mimi, or did you audition? (If so, what was it like?)
To everyone: How does it feel to be so fabulous?
Love,
Grace

Hi Rent Cast!--
Do you have a favorite line/lines from a song from the show? --
Mine has always been:
"Draw a line in the sand
And then make a stand,
Use your camera to Spar
Use your guitar
When they act tough
You call their bluff-"
Rent is amazing. I thank you, cast, for sharing your gift of song, and creating such a beautiful show.
