rent movie newsDo you have a question you have been wanting to ask the cast of Rent? If so, respond in the comment field below. We will take the best questions and ask the cast members and the director. Ask away!

Comments

How do you think America or people who have never saw or heard of Rent before respond to the different types of lifestyles in the movie (mainly sexuallity)

Posted by: Marquetta on 11/03/05 at 03:29 PM

What has been the best moment in creating this movie?

Posted by: Abbie on 11/03/05 at 03:31 PM

What was it like to come back to the Rent material after such a long break from Broadway? Is there anything new that you feel about these characters that you never felt before?

Also, for Mr. Columbus, what aspects of the stage version did you feel were the most important to include in the movie? That is to say, the Broadway show was very modern, unique, and made creative use of sets -- how does that translate into the film version?

Posted by: Marc on 11/03/05 at 03:37 PM

hey cast and crew!!!

i'm a huge rent-head, but i'm sure you already assumed that one!!

i'm just curious as how you adjusted the movie to the modern times. since the show originally opened and took placed in the mid-90's, was there any major updating that took place for the movie??

Posted by: caraaa! on 11/03/05 at 03:37 PM

A general question for the original cast members...

What was it like to step into the studio and onto sets with each other again after so long away from the story, to sing those beautiful songs and perform out Jonathan Larson's vision? Did it still feel the same as ten years ago, or different?

Posted by: Lizzie on 11/03/05 at 03:39 PM

to any cast member-

How has being in Rent changed your perspective on life?

Posted by: Kayla Mravec on 11/03/05 at 03:39 PM

Did anyone have any hilarious mess-ups during filming?

Posted by: Megan on 11/03/05 at 03:40 PM

What was it like the first time you got to see the whole movie, completed?

Posted by: Lea on 11/03/05 at 03:42 PM

i was very worried when i first heard that a movie version of rent was being made. Rent is a musical that touches very close to my heart and i was lucky enough to see the original cast. i am very relieved to see that so many people who were involved in the original stage production are also nvolved in the movie. My fear was that the movie would not be true to the original, how do you feel about the way it came out?

Posted by: kristin on 11/03/05 at 03:45 PM

This is a question I have been dying to ask any actor that portrayed Benny, but have not had the chance, so Taye...this is for you. Why does Benny so desperately want to be with Mimi? I get the fact that she's this hot woman that he probably views as some sort of trophy, but does Benny conveniently forget that Mimi is HIV positive? It is never said that Benny is HIV positive, so why would he engage in such risky behavior? Is there a deeper love that I'm not seeing? When you were developing Benny's character, did you think about that? What kind of man is Benjamin Coffin III?

Posted by: Suzanne on 11/03/05 at 03:47 PM

Hi, I've been wondering, which scene(s) had the greatest impact on you as an actor (or director) and as a person?

Posted by: Shoshana on 11/03/05 at 03:50 PM

Chris,

Rent is a musical that is both timeless AND specific to the 90s. Did you omit certain scenes/lines that might alienate new generations of RENT heads (as they might not "get" references) and or just because people don't talk like that anymore?

While I'm here, I've got to thank you again for your absolute devotion to this piece. It doesn't matter if you've got a thousand willing participants if the conductor doesn't know what he's doing-which you obviously do. Although I might be singing a different tune after seeing the movie... lol but I doubt it. ;)

Posted by: Ryan on 11/03/05 at 03:53 PM

This is mainly for Anthony- as I'm curious to his thoughts.

Do you think RENT- as a movie- is going to be 'good' for the Gay/Lesbian community?

The musical showed me these were people too- just as capable and loving as anyone else- not twisted, not sick- not wrong...Not just goofy guys on TV.

It changed my perspective on life and allowed me to be open with myself- for which I now have a wonderful girl in my life- who had been beside me all along as my best friend.

I've asked something along this line before- but I suppose it was overlooked...

So to simplify- do you think this movie will help to ease over the minds of some 'conservitives'...? And do you think it might serve as a new 'call to arms' if you will for movements in rights and fair treatment?

This is for the Rosario and Tracie: Having played these Characters on screen, would either of you ever play the characters on the stage?

This is for Chris: When is the projected release date for the RENT DVD/VHS? Will it include the deleted scences ("Goodbye Love part 2", "Halloween" "Love Heals")?

This is for Adam: Adam you had mentioned a few years ago in a Broadway.com interview that you would never play Roger on stage again! Is this still true? You also mentioned in the interview that you would want to play Mark sometime. Will you still want to play Mark on Broadway?

This ones for Idina: Will you ever return to the Gershwin and play the most popular role in contemporary musical theatre.... ELPHABA?

This is for Chris: What are you exspecting on Oscar night 2006?

The Cast: Oscar 2006?

This is my last question.... Can I get tickets to an advance screening! (It doesn't hurt to try!)

Posted by: Dhiraj Chand on 11/03/05 at 03:57 PM

This is a question for anyone from the original cast.

Do you think that the movie version is going to be even more effective at conveying the message than the musical?

It is a powerful message that everyone should hear, and I want to compliment yo uall on the amazing job you have done publicizing it, everytime I watch TV I see a commercial, everytime I pick up a magazine I see an ad. I cannot wait until Nov 23

Posted by: Caitie on 11/03/05 at 03:57 PM

To all the cast and/or Chris Columbus:

How has RENT changed your life?

Posted by: Jackie on 11/03/05 at 03:58 PM

Hey there!!

This question is for both the RENT cast and Mr. Chris Columbus. Since all of you have either been in or seen the origanal broadway show of RENT were you all very particular about putting in input about your characters and how and what should be put in the movie version of RENT?

Well you are all great!!!

Posted by: Sammy on 11/03/05 at 04:02 PM

i LOVE you guys, and i know you feel my sentiment, and i wish nothing but the WORLD to you all...

but i wanted to ask:
* are there fears that all/either of you have that this might be taken negatively?
* what do you personally want people to take away after watching this GREAT film?
* to the cast, is there anything that you had a vision of for the movie, that was done not to what you expected, beit postive or negative?
* are you going to be on the road to promote this film?

okay, i think imma stop there because i could go on... again, thank you to the cast and crew for this AMAZING gift!

Posted by: bja19 on 11/03/05 at 04:04 PM

For members of the OBC,

Being away from these characters for as many years as you all have been and having all certainly grown as actors, did you find it hard to revive your characters to the same way that you did back in 96 or do you feel as though you never left them? When reviving them, did you feel that they changed in similar ways as you have or did you rediscover your characters as they were?

Posted by: Emily on 11/03/05 at 04:04 PM

To Chris Columbus:

How exactly did you make this idea come to fruition? How did you find a writer(s) and actually get the ball rolling? Was the Larson family involved from early on with the idea? So many people have tried to do this before, including Spike Lee. And although we are open arms with Traci and Rosario, why didn't Fredi and Daphne join up? And with songs like "We're Okay" and "Christmas Eve" etc being gone from the soundtrack, is it safe to assume those segments were expanded into dialogue (esp the riot of course)? THANKS CHRIS! We're on a RENT countdown over here in Albany, NY!

Who's the funniest cast member?

Posted by: ShuQ on 11/03/05 at 04:13 PM

Hey! WOW isnt this awesome! ! ! Lol anywho I am a total broadway fanatic and hope to be a broadway actress when i grow up, but i was wondering with a lot of hard work and real determination can anyone be an actor, actress? I mean I am a CA girl longing for NYC and such, I hope to go one day especially if it would be something like my first show! But is it possible for someone who has not taken voice lessons for their WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE but will soon and sings a lot, or a person who loves plays but has not taken any classes for it, to become a famous broadway actor/actress? THANKS cant wait for the movie love you all ESPECIALLY YOU IDINA (saw u and Rosario in the HIV AIDS commercial on TV LOVE YOU)Love always looking forward to RENT

Posted by: Medina Johnson on 11/03/05 at 04:13 PM

Hey guys, I can't think of any question that hasn't already been asked a hundred times, so I just wanted to say that you are great! I like watching the video blogs. I just want to grab each and every one of you and give you a big kiss ang a bear hug! I've loved RENT for years, saw the play a bunch of times and it changed my life. Can't wait to see what the movie is like!

Posted by: Cor on 11/03/05 at 04:13 PM

I'm such a huge fan of the show since it ran at NYTW, so, like most of the ?'s already up, this is about the cast :-D . First, for Rosario and Tracie - what was it like coming in as, well, the new kids in town (so to speak)?

And for everyone else, what was it like having them come in without their being in the show? Are we OBC fans just romanticizing the relationship that the Broadway cast had/has, or are you really as close-knit as we imagine you to be?

Thanks so much! I can't wait for the movie - 20 days!!!

Idina-Your hair is so pretty. Is is naturally wavy?

Jesse-so i know you took a break from Law and Order. What was it like being away from it for so long?

Idina and Adam- Did you really go to the same high school and have the same orthodontist.

Adam- You are really hot.

Anthony- Did you use the same glasses you usually wear in the movie? -- kuz they look goooood.

A little question from the midst of the Atlantic Ocean.

I dont know exactly how it is with other countries beside America, but here in Iceland Rent is generally not very well known. Do you think that the movie will be an instant hit in Europe just as it probably will be in USA?

With lots of love
Inga from Iceland

PS. I have been trying to get information on when the movie will be shown here in Iceland, I hope it wont be as late as March or something... How are the openings in Europe?

Posted by: Inga Ausa on 11/03/05 at 04:22 PM

To Chris Columbus/cast
Was the PG-13 rating for this movie a big surprise for you? Why or why not? Rent's debut on broadway was rather controversial, as the musical dealt with strong issues that aren't usually brought up in mainstream society. Do you think that the film version will spark similar controversy, being that some people may not approve of allowing their 13 year old children to be exposed to the different lifestyle?

Posted by: JIm on 11/03/05 at 04:28 PM

This is for any of the cast.

Now that you guys have gotten a taste of RENT again, would any of you consider going back to Bway as your character? Tracie and Rosario, does the movie make you want to try out your character on stage?

You guys cannot even fathom the gift you have given all of us. I can't say thank you enough.

was it hard for the cast and crew to juggle time between shooting the film and other events and appearences? how did every deal with the busy schedules, and if it was taxing on the mind and body did anyone have any methods for relaxing themselves and keeping them calm during filming.

Posted by: amanda on 11/03/05 at 04:32 PM

I ♥ RENT.

Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 04:36 PM

This is a question for anyone in the original broadway cast.
Was it hard to step back into a role that you hadn't played for nearly a decade? And was there anything that you added to your character's personality and/or behavior after ten years of life experience and with the opportunity to view the world more closely?

And these are for Chris Colombus?

When you created the film what elements did you contribute that you felt were important to add?

Rent itself is a very touching story, but it portrays many controversial topics (homosexuality, drug addiction, AIDS, etc), do you feel that it is important to portray these controversial subjects as a part of everyday life to help gain an acceptance and respect for them? And did you add anything new to these subjects to make them more controversial at this present time in history?

I love Rent and I love everything that it stands for. I can honestly say that it has really made me view life differently and has made me more aware of the world outside of my own protected space. I have waited soooo long for the movie to finally get an opportunity to be made. It excites me that the majority of the broadway cast returned to play their roles, and that they were lucky enough to add two new talents to the cast, who can both to justice to the music and the charaters. And finally it is very nice to have an avid 'Renthead' as the director and to have Jonathan Larson's family there to help Rent reach millions of people around the world. You are all doing an AMAZING job and I look forward to November 23rd

Posted by: Allie on 11/03/05 at 04:43 PM

For the entire cast/crew,

There seem to be two sorts of people: those who have never heard of RENT and those who are rabidly obsessed with it. How do you think the movie will affect that?

Also, are there any funny anecdotes that occured during the making of the movie?

Thanks so much!

Posted by: Alison on 11/03/05 at 04:46 PM

Hey! I'm so in LOVE with the musical! It's awesome!

Rosario- How was it making out with Adam Pascal? Wow! You're so lucky! Ha ha!

Adam- Civillian is AWESOME! Which do you like doing better- acting or singing?

Posted by: Jess on 11/03/05 at 04:48 PM

What is it about RENT that you love the most?

Posted by: Ryan on 11/03/05 at 04:49 PM

Hello RENT cast and director!!! I'm happy to ask you guys questions!

For the cast: Hi guys! When you guys started the theatre production, what did you guys do to get into character? And what did you do to make your character the way it was?

For the Director: Hi! When you hopped on board to direct this film, were you at all nervous about making it true to what Jonathan Larson presented? (From what I've seem, I'm sure you have :)

Thanks for listenting,
<3 Steph

Posted by: Stephy G on 11/03/05 at 04:51 PM

I believe that the real life grit that is embedded in Rent will take the movie to the Academy Awards. Do you expect the same Oscar treatment for Rent that was given Chicago?

Posted by: sally on 11/03/05 at 04:57 PM

The other night my friend and I got into a debate, that well turned into a gigantic argument over the matter of Rent being cross cultural. I feel that it is, based on the immense variety of people that come to see it from different backgrounds and cultures, and the storyline itself, the way it deals with many different issues facing society today and how it's characters are all from different cultures and backgrounds themselves. He flat out says it's not, that because he feels it doesnt have the mass appeal of a movie such as Titanic, or even a musical such as Annie, that it cannot be considered cross cultural. He feels that the storyline of the musical makes no difference to whether or not it's cross cultural, it's simply the amount of people from different demographics that have a desire to see it. The debate became very heated, mainly because the musical has been such a large part of my life the past 8 years and he barely knows the storyline. So i'm just curious on what any of your opinions are on the subject. Thanks so much!

P.s. I cant find the answer to this anywhere so I'm asking you guys, Is Rent still opening in New York and LA on November 11? I know that was the original date for those two cities but now all I've seen is November 23rd as the release date. But fandango has November 11th still up so I'm all confused. I have a friend coming in from Boston just so we can go see it that weekend. So if someone could let all of us here in NYC and those in LA know, i'm sure we'd all appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

Posted by: Courtney on 11/03/05 at 05:06 PM

For anyone on the cast that was in the original Broadway cast, how was it coming together again to produce such a great thing? Was it difficult at all to come back to something that was so big so long ago and try to recreate it?

Posted by: Abby on 11/03/05 at 05:06 PM

Does Rosario have the hair glitter in Out Tonight?

Posted by: charlie on 11/03/05 at 05:11 PM

To Chris Columbus/cast
Do you think RENT is going to open the eyes of people in america when it comes to sexuality and aids? Also, do you think this movie will have as big an impact as it did on broadway?

Can't wait until it comes out!!! I'm counting down the days and until then...blasting it on my ipod and singing in the shower 0:-)

love to all
Khalehla

Posted by: Khalehla on 11/03/05 at 05:14 PM

This is a great thing:

I too would like to know what you hope the fans take away from the movie, is there a message here or was it done just for fun, because I see three different things here, but I won't say what they are, I want you to tell me. And the song love heal is beautiful were did it come from.

Posted by: wilma on 11/03/05 at 05:17 PM

To Anthony--

As you've been in all three versions of the show, how do you think the characters have changed from the original NYTW script to the upcoming movie?

Posted by: elizabeth on 11/03/05 at 05:21 PM

hey, rent looks like it'll be an awesome movie!

is there any scare that the movie won't do as well in certain places in the U.S.? i live near oklahoma city, and >supposedly< (i'm not 100% sure), a few years back, a performance of Rent (it was performed by some sort of travelling company) got booed offstage here. so, i've been wondering if there's been any concern of releasing the movie here, and if so, if the movie's even going to be shown in very many movie theaters here.

anyways, the movie looks AMAZING!!! I can't wait to see it!

Posted by: Brian on 11/03/05 at 05:28 PM

What is the most important message you hope the audience takes away from this movie?

Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 05:28 PM

RENT is such an amazing project that has changed so many lives (including my own) over the years. Especially with it coming out as a movie, and thus affecting even more people, how do you think that your future projects will compare to something this phenomenal?

Posted by: Becky on 11/03/05 at 05:38 PM

How does each actor personally relate to their respective character? Are there great similarities or differences?

Posted by: Sasha on 11/03/05 at 05:42 PM

To the cast: With this movie, y'all are probably going to become famous movie star types. I mean, so many people are going to see this. Are you going to stay with the stage, do you think? Or are you going to do more movies?

To Mr. Columbus: How does RENT compare to the other movies that you've directed?

Posted by: Becky on 11/03/05 at 05:44 PM

Here's one for Adam and Rosario!

Did you have good chemistry ?

You both look so cute and sweet together!I'm just in awe when I see you both on screen together!

Here's one for Idina and Tracie!

Is it diffcult to play two lovers ?? Was it akward at all ?

You both have amazing voices!

Posted by: Melissa on 11/03/05 at 05:44 PM

Any advice for an aspiring actress? RENT rocks my socks off!!!!

Posted by: becky on 11/03/05 at 05:45 PM

This is for the cast:

What is one song/segment from the original show you wish was not cut or changed to dialogue?

Posted by: Chris on 11/03/05 at 05:45 PM

a couple of questions...

for the OBC,
what lessons and feeling did you take with you from being in the show? have any of you ever seen the show as an outsider, after you were done with it? if so, did you take anything different from the watching the show, then being in it? (everybody)and how does it feel watching yourselves?

for rosario(BTW i love "kids") and tracie(BTW i love your hair)
when both of you first saw rent, what did you take from it? what are you trying to have others take away from it?

chris
this isn't a question more like a comment. i just wanna say, no matter what others say, you're a genius for hiring sara silverman as alexi darling. you get some major snaps for that.

Posted by: Stephan on 11/03/05 at 05:48 PM

This is for everyone...I have no doubt that the movie and the show will stand the test of time but do you think it will have the same emotional effect on audiences in 10, 15 or 20 years from now?

Also, if you could sum up the whole message of Rent in one word, what would it be?

I love you guys! You're the best!

Posted by: dawn on 11/03/05 at 05:49 PM

After seeing all the questions that have been asked, I doubt mine will ever be answered. But, I'll try
Idina: It seems like you just got off Broadway playing the role of Elphaba (by the way, you were spectacular!!!) was it hard to go back to, as you say, cowbells and cat suits?

Anthony: Adam has said before that he thinks it would be fun to play Mark, have you ever thought about the possibilities of being Roger?

Adam: Rent was probably the most straining show you all have ever done, was it hard to go back to playing a damanding role such as Roger?

Rosario: You are amazing! You were everything I had hoped for in a Mimi. Were you nervous about what people would think?

Everyone else I didn't have space for: What are your thoughts as to what the audiences reactions are going to be to Rent?

Later-
Andrew

Posted by: Andrew on 11/03/05 at 05:51 PM

When you first started discussing this movie, what kind of audience were you looking to get?

What are your craziest fan stories?

Will there be any advance screenings or midnight showings of the movie?

I can't thank you guys enough, it means a lot to everyone that you take the time to listen and respond to us. Have a great day! 20 days!

Posted by: Katie L on 11/03/05 at 05:59 PM

To anyone who wants to answer:

If you had to desribe the meaning or message of Rent in ONE word, what would it be?

Posted by: Jon on 11/03/05 at 06:12 PM

First off I wanted to tell you all how excited I am to see this movie. When I see a commercial come on I just get giddy. Ok now onto my question.

What parts of the Musical did you change/enhance to bring the screen version to life and draw in new audiences, and also how have you as the actors created an atmosphere that retains the musicals awesome story line yet create something so amazing that everyone can relate to? How did you plan to draw in audiences that were not particularly fond of the musical?

Posted by: KMH on 11/03/05 at 06:19 PM

-What did you guys do between takes? Any funny stories from the set that you want to share?

-Are you guys going to read reviews?

-To the OBC members, if you all of a sudden tonight you had to go on at the Nederlander, do you think you could pull it off? Do you remember enough of it?

Posted by: Amanda on 11/03/05 at 06:21 PM

To Chris Columbus:

You're no stranger to adapting beloved stories for the big screen, but how different was the pressure between bringing Harry Potter and Rent to the big screen? Secondly, how did Steve Chobosky become involved with the film and what was your collaboration like? Thanks for taking the time to read!

Posted by: Ryan on 11/03/05 at 06:22 PM

What was more nerve-racking/exciting: Performing Rent for the very first time on the Broadway stage years ago or seeing the film for the first time, not exactly knowing how it was going to turn out?

Thank you for all the inspiration and for having such a major affect on my life through your performances [and just for getting the message of Rent across!]. I can't say it enough!

Love, Courtney

PS. Are there going to be any promotions/signings/concerts of any sort once the movie is out?

Posted by: Courtney on 11/03/05 at 06:25 PM

Adam: I know that back in 2000 (or around there) you said you would never sing Glory at one of your gigs but you sang it at Joe's Pub last year, what changed you're mind? Also what's it like being the sex symbol of Broadway? (if he answers that I will die laughing)

Wilson: This is just a comment but you make a very pretty woman. :) Oh and I loved you singing the SOL solo on Regis and Kelly. Were you nervous?

Idina: You're one of the many actresses I respect in the Broadway community. Do you ever think about how much of a role model for young aspiring actresses, like myself, you are?

Taye: You're an amazing actor. I loved your show Kevin Hill, what was your reaction when it was cancelled? (I know it's not a Rent related question but...I thought I'd try)

I think that's it. Hope some of my questions get answered.

So much Rent love,
Sara

Posted by: Sara on 11/03/05 at 06:26 PM

for the director:
is there going to be rent on dvd

Posted by: Emma on 11/03/05 at 06:26 PM

To any of the cast:
Do you have any advice to aspiring performers who wish to be on Broadway?

Posted by: Taylor on 11/03/05 at 06:28 PM

To the cast and crew,

I am such a big RENT-head thanks to Idina, if I hadnt seen her as the green girl in WICKED I would have probably never seen RENT, so thank you Idina for this awesome opportunity and experience. I just get so giddy when I see a commerical come on about it. 11.23.05 cannot come soon enough.

Idina this is for you--what is it like going from being in RENT through all of your other shows then to your TONY award winning performance as Elphaba (which touched and changed my life forever, thank you for being so kind at the stage door) back to RENT for the movie? would you ever do this with WICKED? You have such an amazing voice it just touches my heart everytime I hear it.

Taye this ones for you--- how does the stage and the screen differ. You have such a wonderful voice. Also what is it like to see Idina kissing Anthony and Tracie and acting as a lesbian?

Adam- how did going from a singer to an actor transform you and what has it done to change your life?

Anthony-- what is the best thing you have gotten from being an actor?

Tracie--you have such a wonderful voice, I love you as Joanne, how has being a newbie affected you in RENT and also what is it like to play a lesbian?

Rosario--You are a wonderful Mimi, what is it like to step into such a big role? What was your favorite moment?

Wilson--how does playing a drag queen affect your everyday life?

Jesse--what is it like to be famous in Law and Order then go back to RENT?

Chris---thank you thank you thank you for creating this movie, what was the hardest part of making a movie musical and how did the actors who were in the original cast contribute to ease some of the confusion?

I was wondering if anyone in the cast or if Chris Colombus studied and researched Puccini's La Boheme while working on the play or the film? Did that research help any of you building your charcaters or the world of the play?

Posted by: Emily on 11/03/05 at 06:31 PM

A lot of questions have been repeated multiple times so I'll try to be original.

-Were there any pranks you guys played on each other during filming or during the Broadway run?

-Are there any actors/actresses on Broadway who you would love to work with/or loved working with?

-Do you/would you like to do TV interviews and promotions (ie Leno) or would you hate it?

-What are some of your passtimes/hobbies/etc. besides musical theater, acting, and singing?

Posted by: Caroline S. on 11/03/05 at 06:35 PM

Hello! I was just wondering, why didn't the original Joanne and Mimi return for the movie?

Posted by: Brian M. on 11/03/05 at 06:36 PM

How would you life be different if you didn't have the oppurtunity to be in RENT? How has this production changed your life emotionally and from the stand point of fame?

LOVE<3
JAMIE!

Hi. I'm a total renthead but instead of asking a RENT question i wanted to ask you guys something (anyone can answer) Besides Rent what are some of your favorite shows?

Adam- What show did you enjoy doing more Aida or Rent?
Idina- Which did you enjoy more Wicked or Rent?
Rosario-After doing film and now Rent, and gentlemen of verona can we expect to see more of you on Broadway?

Posted by: Trey on 11/03/05 at 06:43 PM

Ooh Yaaay.

-How do you keep your emotions from that of the character?
-What was different about playing your character almost 10 years later?
-Have you made any major changes from the play to adapt it to the movie?

More to come :) Eee, I'm excited.

Posted by: Becca on 11/03/05 at 06:47 PM

we all know rent on stage isn't really a finished show because jonathan larson died before he finished it. do you think the ends you've tied would be the way he would want them?

Posted by: Leah on 11/03/05 at 06:50 PM

How do you think the cast currently on broadway will take the movie?

Posted by: Brian M. on 11/03/05 at 06:56 PM

I have the RENT movie wallpaper and someone was like..."Why do you have a bunch of models on your screen"

*WHICH MEANS, YOU'RE ALL GOOD-LOOKING!

Question for Cast: Do you expect us "Rentheads" to sing along during the movie?

Posted by: Brian M. on 11/03/05 at 06:58 PM

I saw the touring version of RENT at LSU last year and I am very excited that it is about to hit theatres as a movie. My question is, will RENT (like other movies) be released on DVD eventually? I would LOVE to add RENT to my DVD collection! :)

Posted by: Holli on 11/03/05 at 07:01 PM

For the OBC, how does it feel knowing that you have been a part of something that have changed peoples lives in so many fantastic ways?

For Tracie & Rosario; has it sunk in completely just how big RENT is, and how you both are going to impact peoples lives in so many fantastic ways due to the popularity of it?

Posted by: Lindsey on 11/03/05 at 07:01 PM

I love all you guys but this question is for the ever-so-handsome Jesse...

You have been great in all the work you've done so far in your career. I would love to see you play leading man in a romantic comedy! And or, a bad guy! Would you ever consider doing a role in either?? And if so, who would you want for a leading lady in a Romantic comedy?

Posted by: Erica on 11/03/05 at 07:05 PM

Will Rent come out in Europe at the same time that it's coming out in the U.S? (I'm going to be in London when it comes out here)

Posted by: Kelsey on 11/03/05 at 07:05 PM

Do you guy have a "family" of friends like the one that's formed during "Rent"? Do any of your friends remind you of certain characters from "Rent"?

Posted by: Katie on 11/03/05 at 07:10 PM

Idina and Taye, has it been hard playing characters that absolutely hate eachother? Whenever you look at eachother, we can all see the love in your eyes.

Full Cast, what were your first responses when being told you were being considered for your roles?

Posted by: Allie on 11/03/05 at 07:10 PM

I have yet to see the stage production and have only listened to the Cast Recording.

My question for Chris Columbus is why do you feel a film version was neseccary? What does it offer that the stage version cannot?

(Not meant to be rude. A serious question).

Also - what was your favorite scene to film.?

Thanks!

Posted by: Andrew on 11/03/05 at 07:17 PM

Chris,

Do you think that the movie RENT has added more as oppose to taking away more? I understand you have added and taken away, but which do you think happened more?

Any cast member,

Do you believe that each character represents a little bit of Jonathan? Do any of you relate to your character?

Idina- How old were you when you first started writing your own music? What inspired you to do so?
Your music is so cleverly written and so meaningful.

Sincerely,

To Chris and Anthony:

What was it like working together again, after so many years have passed since working on "Adventures in Babysitting"? What were the highlights, main differences, and similarities??

BTW - The trailers look amazing - they are emotional and beautifully shot. As well, thanks for communicating with us and having such a personal blog. We definetaly feel a part of the movie!

Posted by: Sara on 11/03/05 at 07:32 PM

Idina-First off, i am a HUGE fan and i admire everything you do. my wuestion pertains to Over The Moon. I love the way you do it in the Original and Movie soundetracks, but there are some noticable differences between the two. What has the monolouge meant for you and how has your ways of performing it changed? thanks!

Posted by: Sondra on 11/03/05 at 07:36 PM

Short and sweet:

To each memeber of the cast:
What's your favorite song from RENT and why? (yes, I know it's hard to choose just one... mine's i'll cover you reprise)

Posted by: Leigh on 11/03/05 at 07:36 PM

Are any of you guys going to go see the film in theatres the day it comes out? Or hey, all the die-hards are going to the midnight showing on the 22nd. =)

Is the cast going to be on Ellen to promote the film? I want to see you all dance to "La Vie Boheme" w/ Ellen! haha.

Idina -- Where do you get all your cool hats? PS you are getting so much press right now, I love it!

OH My God!! I can't believe this has become a movie! I am so excited to see it! I have always wanted to be in RENT..need anyone? LOL

Posted by: Joe on 11/03/05 at 07:43 PM

hey rent cast and Chris.
I've been a renthead since i saw the original cast when I was six (i know, what was i thinking, seeing it that young) and it's held a special place in my heart ever since. I was just wondering, this is geared to any member of the original cast, what lesson, feeling or emotion did you get out of this movie that was different than the first time you did it? (for tracie or rosario, basically same queston but obviously not about the first time you've done it.) also, what were the emotions on the set when Jonathan's family was there watching the whole filming process? Thank you all so much! I can't wait to see my favorite musical also become my favorite movie!

Posted by: Samantha on 11/03/05 at 07:44 PM

I am SOOO excited about this film! :) Ok, i have 2 questions.

1. (for those from the original broadway cast) Coming back to do this film, after all of these years, what were some things that ya'll were able to realize or get a 'better grasp of', when thinking of RENT and what it stands for?

2. When did ya'll realize that ya'll had the talent to sing, and how do ya'll keep ya'lls voices so dang strong?!?
Thanks,
Colton Childs

Posted by: Colton on 11/03/05 at 07:50 PM

Hello to all of you! I can't wait until Nov. 23!
Just a quick question:
What is going to happen to the blog after the movie comes out? Will it continue?

Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 07:57 PM

For the Cast:

what are your plans for the future? what projects will you be working on now?

For the OBC:

is there a sense of closure and completion now that the movie has been made? is there any remorse or sadness knowing that you will probably never play your titled roles again?

Posted by: Monika on 11/03/05 at 07:59 PM

Just a question or two:
Chris: How hard was it to get in touch of the original actors? Also, if it's possible to answer, why didn't Fredi Walker and Daphne decide to do the movie?

To the cast: This musical was a big impact on our society when it started, since we didn't really deal with AIDS and homosexuality. Now, nine years later, with shows like "Will and Grace", "Queer as Folk", the subject of same sex marraige, and the awareness of the homosexual community do you think it will have as big as an impact in that respect?

Posted by: Sarah on 11/03/05 at 08:01 PM

I know I'll probably come off as the bad guy in this sense, but I am a straight female who doesn't completely understand(or agree) with the gay community. I don't discriminate, but at the same time I don't really support it. However, I have the soundtracks and have read the script to the musical and really enjoyed it. I was able to connect with the HIV/AIDS situation as people close to me in my life have AIDS. My question to you is, do you think that this movie can be seen by the mass public on multiple levels not just homosexuality and aids, but show that people should respect(and if anything tolerate) other peoples life choosings even if they don't agree with it? Or that people are people no matter what and should be treated like people. Emerson has said "Let us treat men and women well, treat them as if they were real, perhaps they are" and that's another theme I gathered from this play/movie. What do you think?

Posted by: Jaye Belle on 11/03/05 at 08:02 PM

For Everyone: What one message do you hope those being exposed to Rent for the first time take away from the movie?

Note to Tracie: I know how proud your dad is of you and its great to see a "local" girl realize her dream!

Posted by: AEH on 11/03/05 at 08:04 PM

Hey guys! I just have to say I love you guys! The fact that your're making this movie is so incredible to me!! My question is we all talk about how RENT has affected our lives. Besides professionally, how has this show affected all of you? LOVE YOU GUYS! ADAM YOU ROCK!

Posted by: Rentchick22 on 11/03/05 at 08:08 PM

So maybe this will sound weird, but it's important I think: Do you think, during Over the Moon, it is right for people to moo at the screen, despite this NOT being an interactive showing of Rent? This has been a hot topic on the IMDb board, and I'd love to hear your views. I personally don't think it would be right, especially considering how many audience members will not be familiar with the show. Any thoughts?

Posted by: Colleen on 11/03/05 at 08:12 PM

I've got a real quick question for the cast: did any of you know early on that you wanted to be actors? How does it feel to really make it in such a hard industry?

Thanks for everything you guys do! You're all fantastic actors!

Posted by: Louise on 11/03/05 at 08:22 PM

Hey, guys, I'm a big fan. I was wondering, what do you do to get into character?

Posted by: Holly on 11/03/05 at 08:25 PM

Are you worried at all about the movie not living up to its Broadway original? BTW, oh my god, I CANNOT wait to see the film.

Posted by: Maggie on 11/03/05 at 08:27 PM

There are so many life lessons built into RENT. The obvious one: no day but today, live life to the max every day. But did any of you realize any hidden lessons during the making of the movie? Jonathan Larson seemed to be such a complex person, I'm sure he added more depth to the story during the making of the musical. Any new discoveries during the making of the movie?

Posted by: Denise on 11/03/05 at 08:32 PM

First of all, I would like to say that I am totally in love with RENT!!! It's such an amazing story! You guys are doing a great job! You all have such beautiful, powerful voices. I'm insanely jealous. If I could sing half as well, I'd be happy. But, on with the questions.

Do you think it was harder doing the movie or the play version?

Is it hard playing a lesbian/gay person, even though you aren't one?

Did you guys keep in contact after the play, or was this the first time you've seen/talked to each other since it ended? (Obviously Idina and Taye have, but everyone else?)

Do you have a favorite scene(s)? (If so, which one(s)

I guess that's all for questions. Thank you again for making this so special. I live in the midwest and don't get a chance to go anywhere to see anything even somewhat close to Broadway, much less RENT. I'm really glad that Chris Columbus cast most of the original cast, because I'm a huge fan. Thanks.

No question, more of a comment!

I was listening to some of the sounds track this past Saturday, not ever considering or having any knowledge a movie was being made.

WOW...Can't wait to see it, I've got a tear just thinking about it! Thanks in advance to everyone involved in this everlasting project.

5256 mins - I measure it by the heart!

Posted by: Kev on 11/03/05 at 08:39 PM

I'm a huge Renthead! The musical has touched my life so much, and I am sure it has touched others as well. Being such a big fan, I'm wondering how much you had to change the musical to put it on film. I know the cast has said the movie has stayed true to the musical, and that is encouraging. I guess I just want to make sure that Rent is preserved for future generations.

Good work to the cast and crew! You guys are amazing! I love the soundtrack and the cast sounds amazing. OBC, your voices have matured and sound even better. (I still cry when I hear "I'll Cover You Reprise.") And thanks to Chris for making the movie! You rock!

Posted by: Alexandria on 11/03/05 at 08:41 PM

When are you guys gonna give us Left-Coasters some lovin? Idina never did a San Francisco gig (that I know of), and the Nov. 11 LA release was postponed! We are all so disappointed that NYC (as great as it is) holds all your hearts and all of us just have to gaze toward the dawning sun so wistfully. So... are there plans to do some great West Coast events I can take part in in the works? New Years party? Concert? Anything?

With much love from California,

My big concern for the movie is getting the same "chills" i get watching rent on stage :)...same effect??

For the members for the original cast:

How has the RENT expeirence changed for you?

For the new people:

What did you really get from working on this film that will be with you forever?

For Chris and other workers:

How did you make sure that through the pressure of thousands of fans that you made the right choices for the film?

Posted by: Alex on 11/03/05 at 08:46 PM

Thankyou all so much for giving us the opportunity to interact with you! It means so so much to all of us!Now to the questions! There are thousands of avid rent-heads in Australia and around the world. Will you be attending the premiere of Rent in Australia? Do you believe that the project is as universal as the stage - production, or perhaps even more so?

Thanks again for the opportunity to see all your remarkable talents first hand! As an aspiring actor, you all make the arduous and difficult journey through the field seem worth it beyond comprehension!!

Much love,
Erin xxxx

this question is to tracie. You're just a regular old RENThear, like the rest of us on this boared, with the same speacial place in your heart for the play. what is it like to not only meet the origenal cast, but be abel to act in this amazing show with them and to be abel to recreate it?

Dear ADAM:
My friend and I have a question about Roger: Maybe this will be addressed more in the movie, but did he go to rehab? We know he’s “just coming back from half a year of withdrawal”, so when did he quit doing drugs and why? Was it right after he found out about April dying/him getting AIDS? We also noticed that you sing in Life Support, the line that says “reason says I should have died three years ago”, so does that mean that it’s been three years since April died/he finds out he had AIDS?
We can’t wait for the movie, thanks for taking our questions!!!

What scene was the hardest to bring from stage to life on film and why? Aside from minor adjustment was there any scene from the play that had to be taken out or completely changed?

p.s. I just wanted to say that I love all of you,you all are so great. I saw you in 1996, when I was 11; I was a little confused to say the least, but loved the music. I have since seen the play numerous times, and have come to understand it more and more, each time. I can’t wait to see the film!

TAYE/IDINA: Seeing that you're both so busy with other things, how fulfilling was it to be able to work on the same project together-again?

JESSE:Why hasn't Dick Wolf had a musical episode of Law&Order yet?...he better recognize...

WILSON:What are three things that you cannot part without? (in life, in work, whatever...)

ADAM:Would you encourage your children to follow in your footsteps? (in terms of a musical theatre profession...)

ROSARIO/ANTHONY:You have impecible, amazing, stunning vocal abilities. What are some eating/drinking tips you'd give to fellow actor/singers?

TRACIE:Words can't express properly how happy I get everytime I see the trailer or the comercial, or a poster...You've got an incredible talent, and I'm sure you know that. My question: what would you have done differently between the day you got the call saying you got the part, & right now, while reading this question to you?

I'M WRITING IN ALL CAPS SO YOU'LL READ THIS... (clever eh?)

THIS IS TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO WISHES TO ANSWER:

THE JOURNEY OF "RENT" HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN A LONG ONE WITH SO MANY AMAZING SURPRISES. DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS MOVIE VERSION OF THE SHOW WILL BRING THE SAME LIFE AND ENERGY AS THE STAGE, AND IN TURN CONTINUE THE JOURNEY? WHAT MAKES THIS SHOW SO INCREDIBLE POWERFUL?

i cannot cannot CANNOT explain how extremely excited i am for this movie to come out.

maybe not even because i want to see it- i already know RENT and the characters and the stories, the laughter and tears...

i'm excited to watch the WORLD fall in love with it as i have.

i'm excited to share my love of life with every person that goes to the theatres.

RENT truly unites us all.

Posted by: Maggie on 11/03/05 at 08:58 PM

Hey everyone! This is just a general question directed toward the OBC. When RENT was just being worked on, did you guys come up with any kind of background stories for your characters to help you relate to them? Did Jonathon give you anything to work with along those lines? A friend and I were discussing it the other day, just general things like "why are things not so good between Mark and his father?" "where is Angel's family?", things like that. My friend was saying she occasionally imagined Mark and Maureen's breakup. (for some reason, she imagines things flying across the apartment, which is an amusing mental image.) Do you guys have any information like that you'd be willing to share?

Thank you so much! I don't know how I'll survive another 3 weeks, but I'll try. Much love to everyone!

Sarah

First of I want to say thank you to the cast and Chris Columbus for even giving us the opportunity to ask questions. You guys really do care about the fans!

So my question is:

After viewing the final cut of the movie, are you guys happy with the end result? I know that several members of the OBC weren't exactly satisfied with the OBCR. Did you go into the recording process with more insight so that this time around you don't have regrets years from now?

Thanks so much for giving us this movie. Btw... the cinematagraphy looks absolutely AMAZING!

I am watching "Team America" the other day, and saw for the first time the paraody of "RENT." I know that it isn't necessarily the most flattering parody but, it goes beyond that. RENT has made such an impact on our society that ten years later it is still being parodied. What are you feelings on that? On the fact that you, your musical (and hell, even your scarf Anthony) are still being recognized.

Posted by: Evan Taksar on 11/03/05 at 09:01 PM

I just want to say how cool it is that all of you have been so open with us fans of the show. I'm sure it's obvious that Rent means so much to so many people across the globe and I really hope that this movie brings even more people to this wonderful story. Anyway, my question is for Tracie. We all know that you started out as a Renthead yourself. What was it like for you, as a Renthead, to go into this movie and get to act alongside most of the OBC?

~~~Amy~~~
How can we get a signed movie poster from all of you!? :-)
Posted by: Brian M. on 11/03/05 at 09:11 PM
How do you think this will affect RENT at the Nederlander? Will the environment there change a lot?
And do you think the extremely positive reaction to the movie (I guess I shouldn't assume...) will lead to another RENT tour? I live in Nebraska and have seen the musical 3 times, but would kill for another opportunity.
Posted by: Natalie on 11/03/05 at 09:13 PM
Is anything that you used in the original Broadway production (costumes.props.set.ANYTHING) used in the movie?
I think it'd be cool to look for
Posted by: Brian M. on 11/03/05 at 09:14 PM
Anthony,
As the cast member who has been with the show the longest, from the earliest workshop in '94 to the film, what would you say has been the most rewarding experience of being part of Rent?
Posted by: Heather G. on 11/03/05 at 09:18 PM
You all totally make my life right now! Congrats for completing this incredible task and I know there won't be a moment during the film when I won't be crying out of pure amazement!
Question for the returning cast: How have your performance experiences since the original run of the show influence the way you play your character this time around? Idina- Is there any Elphie in this Maureen? How about Anthony and Charlie Brown? And more generally, what life experiences in the past nine years have influenced how you brought these characters back to life?
Idina, I absolutely love you! I was so proud to have seen Wicked your final week of performances! My friend (a newer but still as devoted fan of yours) and I dressed up as you for Halloween! She was Maureen in the cat suit, and I was Elphaba! Hopefully I'll be able to see you perform again, you have had a profound impact on me!
To the rest of the cast: You all make me so proud! Through these blogs I feel as if I have gotten to know each of you personally, and your love you have for eachother and your fans and your message is way beyond admirable! Love you all!
This question is for Tracie:
What was it like to kiss Idina?
Posted by: Amy on 11/03/05 at 09:24 PM
In the musical, things like the relationship between Roger and April were mentioned, but not really explored. Were any of you nervous at all, while filling in these gaps for the movie, that the changes would not go according to Jonathan's vision?
Posted by: Jenn on 11/03/05 at 09:25 PM
Adam,
You have grown so much as an actor since you first appeared in Rent. What do you feel is the greatest "acting lesson" you have learned since then?
Posted by: Heather G. on 11/03/05 at 09:25 PM
For any/all of the original cast folks--do you feel that your character has evolved from stage to film? In other words, what new elements did you bring to your character in making the film, and why?
Posted by: Rachael on 11/03/05 at 09:25 PM
What aspects of your character do you recognize especially in your own personality?
Posted by: Stacey on 11/03/05 at 09:25 PM
The show is amazing, but what I want to ask is what it is like to raise money for Broadway Cares? At State Thespians we did it at a MUCH smaller level, but it made us fill so good to be doing it, I guess what I'm saying is how does it make you feel to know you are doing such good?
Posted by: Meg A on 11/03/05 at 09:26 PM
Idina,
Through Rent and Wicked, you have become an amazing role model to so many young people. If you could only pass on one "pearl of wisdom" to the kids you have inspired, what would it be?
for the cast
i beleive yall understand how important this play is. For me there is a magic with each guitar stroke and every piano riff it shines so special that when i left the theater the first time i saw it i was in aww, then the soundtrak the new as well obc i knew that this was something i wanted to do. with that said i hope to one day be in this show a young black man from baltimore(i heard T. Thoms is from b-more big ups) who no one believes will get the chance, i want to know how it fill to have made it happen to get the chance to express these charecters in your own way to express the music in the way only you can , to create the essence of rent.
Posted by: jonathan on 11/03/05 at 09:34 PM
IDINA, I would like to just start off by saying that I respect and admire you more than anyone else. While most young girls become infatuated by often shallow hollywood celebrities your career, life journey, and accomplishments intrigue me to no end. As a young Jewish, Canadian performer I aspire to one day, perform on Broadway. In love with the stage, crowds, and the process of it all I would love to hear first hand what it took to get you where you are today. You are an inspiration to aspiring Broadway performers and I so often hear stories of struggling to the point of living off of a diet of saltines in a rat infested whole-in-the-wall. I would love to ask you how long it took to land a role on Broadway, what you did in between auditions/shows to support yourself, and how and where you kept doing what you loved before your Broadway career took off. In reality, what do you think it takes? You posess that X-factor that so many dream of... while that is not something that can be taught, any thoughts on how to make people see that extra sparkle? I know the competition is tough and so, to conclude in the form of a question, how did you make yourself stand out? Again, thank you for following your dreams and being an inspriation and role-model to so many. You are truly a remarkable talent.
Whose idea was it to have former Rent cast members appear as extras in the movie? Do you wish more people from past productions of Rent could have been included?
When was the last time you saw Rent performed onstage? What was it like being on the other side?
If you could play any other role in the movie other than your own (regardless of gender, physical appearance, etc.), who would it be and why?
What's your favorite song not sung by your character?
Posted by: Amy on 11/03/05 at 09:45 PM
Mr. Columbus,
When you're set to direct a film, what is the process that you usually follow? How do you get a greater sense of the world of the film?
Was this process different for you during the preparation RENT, being that it's a piece so influenced by the theatre?
What steps did you take to truly bring your vision of RENT to life?
A question for Chris and the Cast:
Was there a moment (during or after filming) when you thought, "Wow, I think we might really have something here"--where the movie/filming the movie just exceeded your expectations? When where and why? :)
Posted by: Corey on 11/03/05 at 10:19 PM
For all the cast and Chris Columbus--
Rent means many things to many people, and you all seem to have a good understanding and appreciation of what it is about. For you, what are the most important aspects of Rent, especially thematically? Thanks.
hey cast and crew! this is my first comment on the blog. ah im excited! :)
I love you all so much. The eight of you are probably some of the most talented people i can ever think of! When you all sing, and your voices are put together, it is just INCREDIBLE. Really. Of course the original six are amazing, but I must say I was worried about having a new Joanne and Mimi, and WOW..what a kick in the face that was! I was sooooo incredibly impressed. I apologize for the length of this comment, but I really feel the need now to give a shout out to the cast. Gosh I am such a loser.
**Idina, WOW. Where do I even begin with you! From Rent, to Wicked, to The Wild Party (holy crap you are amazing in The Juggernaut. Goodness gracious.) you NEVER cease to completely blow me away. You are beautiful and probably have one of the best voices I have ever heard. You are my hero and I aspire to be like you every day. Thank you for being such a role model to me and so many others!
**Rosario, you kick soo much butt in Out Tonight; it is becoming one of my favorite songs because of you. You and Tracie are doing suchh a great job as a part of RENT!
**Tracie, I swear, you make me cry everytime you open your mouth! Whenever I listen to Love Heals I rewind your part ("So if you fear the storm ahead..") like 56 times in a row. SO beautiful. I wish I could sing like that.
**Adam, first off, you are gorgeous! :P you have always been one of my personal favorites and your character has as well. I love the "rock star" tone of voice you have; it is just soo great! keep up the great work.
**Taye, I must say you do a wonderful job as Benny. Ive always thought that when a character makes the audience hate him/her and be annoyed by them the whole time because it's part of their personality, they they are doing the right thing and its what I call great acting. So, dont take it as an insult when I say that sometimes it's like that! like "come on! dont make them pay the rent! take some pity!" haha oh wow, I love ya. PS..i think you sound amazing on the movie soundtrack!
**Jesse, from Law and Order to RENT you are an amazing actor. You just rock in everything that you do! Quite an amazing person. everytime i listen to Ill Cover You (reprise) i just CRY! you put soo much emotion into it and wow, its just amazing.
**Wilson, first off, Law and Order: SVU is a show i am OBSESSED with, and when I saw you in the one episode I about DIED!! I loved it. Anyway, you do suchh an incredible job as Angel. I applaud you greatly for it!! I also applaud you for wearing those heels. As a woman I dont even know if I could do it!! haha :)
**Anthony, last BUT NOT LEAST! What to say. You are simply amazing. They honestly picked the best person ever to play Mark. You put soo much into the show and you just make me love it. you and Adam just ROCK in What You Own. It is probably my favorite song in the second act. You are sheerly amazing! by the way, I loved you in Law and Order: SVU as well!! thats one of my favorite episodes hehe
My gosh........I cant believe I actually did this. How big of a loser am I, really!! I hope you guys actually read these, cause I would feel incredibly stupid if you didnt. :)
I LOVE RENT!!!!!!!!!
Do you feel that this film will serve a large purpose in the world?
What social questions do you expect/hope to be raised when this film is viewed by the world?
What was your inspiration for coming to work everyday?
What's everyone's favorite color?! (little bit of a joke, but I'm always interested...)
Posted by: Cheslie on 11/03/05 at 10:37 PM
I've heard some people speculating as to whether "mooing" would be appropriate in the movie theatre during "Over the Moon."
Do you think it's ok for fans to be interactive with the movie (i.e. mooing, clapping, singing) as with the musical, or do you think that it could be considered disruptive to other viewers (who maybe know nothing about Rent, or came to see a movie, not hear other people)?
Posted by: sammi on 11/03/05 at 10:39 PM
Six out of Eight of you guys have done the show now both on stage and in the movies. My question for you is, nine years ago, you walked into these roles and basically interpreted Johnathan's creations as individual actors in an off-broadway performance. It is now almost a decade later and the show has such a huge fanbase as well as the fact that many other actors have played your same roles and adapted them in their own way. My question is, going into the movie, did you find yourself more trying to appease what RENT has become or what it was in the first place?
For Tracie and Rosario, obviously since you were not established as these characters as the rest of the OBC, do you feel more pressured to do justice for the fandom? Many fans concentrait on you two because you are new and unfamiliar...did this affect your roles in any way? Or did it feel to you like you were joining a cast on a long run on Broadway?
For Chris. First of all I just found out the other day that you went to high school with a friend of mine's dad which I thought was kind of cool. Now for my question. RENT is obviously very different than anything else you have made as a director. What are some new aspects as a director that you have brought to this film that are new experiences for you?
Thanks everyone and I am eagerly anticipating the release!
Hey! Does anyone have any weird quirky things that are made fun of often by any other cast members?
Do you think some of the added material, not in the show, helps introduce the characters better?
Are there any interesting or embarrasing stories that occured on set?
Thanx soooo much 19 days!!!
Posted by: Kerri on 11/03/05 at 11:13 PM
First, I want to tell all of you how important Rent has become to me. I have two questions.
To: Everyone
Out of all the characters in Rent, which character do you idenfy with the most? (either the character you played or another)
To: Cast
If you would play character, other then the one you played what character would you choose to play?
Thanks for all the time you have both put into Rent and into making sure the fans are included in the journey.
Just wanted to let you all know that I am looking forward to seeing this picture very much (even though we have to wait until March 2006 over here in the Netherlands): what I've seen so far in clips and stills looks amazing!
Only question I can think of that probably hasn't been asked a zillion times before is if we will get some kind of official European premiere as well, with (some of) the cast and Chris?
Anyway, have lots of fun with the rest of the promotions for the movie and may it be a blast at the theatres!
Dear Taye and Idina,
Can I babysit your kids? (Should there be any!)
;-) Love you!
Posted by: kate on 11/04/05 at 12:26 AM
anthony - i seem to remember somewhere that you mentioned that you had a really good funny/embarrasing story from the obc days, but that you were saving it for whenever you get on something like jay leno. that may very well happen soon, but if it doesn't, will you ever tell us? :)
tracie - the movie and all the promoting and recognition you're getting must be a (well deserved) big leap for you! what it is like? are you enjoying it, do you get nervous for things like the today show?
rosario - you just seem like you're in love with life. :) if you could give us one piece of advice, what would it be?
adam - at this point in your life, are you pursuing music or acting more?
for everyone - one of those classic questions: if you could eat dinner with three people from the past or the present, who would you choose and why?
much love, xoxoxox
Posted by: jackie on 11/04/05 at 12:31 AM
I actually have a question for the crew -
What was it like converting something that's normally done on a stage into the 'real world'? The choices for things like settings/sets, costumes, lighting, etc. seem rather endless. Was it hard to pick what you wanted to do?
Thanks!
Posted by: Janelle on 11/04/05 at 01:22 AM
Ohhh man, I'll definitely be looking forward to this one =)
This isn't really a question, but I've been really wanting to hear each cast member comment about their character, like do a short analysis (not to sound like an english teacher, lol). I just think it would be neat to see what you guys have to say on each of your characters, about anything - their emotions, their complexity, their feelings etc., and how you portrayed that in your acting.
Also, other ppl have asked this one - any funny moments or bloopers while you were shooting?
Thanks and rock on!
~Alex
First off thank you all so much for all your hard work and dedication to this film!!! The first performance I saw of RENT was in 1998 and I've seen it every time it has hit St. Louis since. Every time I see a tralier I get chills, the same way I do each time "Mark" walks out on stage. My biggest fear about the movie is that I will start singing along without knowing it.
Ok, now for my question. I guess it should be addressed to Mr. Columbus....
How did you feel about the PG-13 rating? I can see on the one hand it being a positive because it will allow more people the opportunity to take part in the amazing experience that is RENT. At the same time I worry that perhaps maybe some of the intensity of the stage production was lost in the translation. I know you have commented that none of the lyrics or dialogue had to be changed or cut, so maybe we just lucked out with the MPAA?
Like all the other RENT-heads I am counting the days until the film is released! My boyfriend and I are treating each other to the film for our birthdays, I can't wait to see how he reacts to the movie (he's a complete RENT virgin.)
Thanks again to the entire cast and crew and especially the Larson family! It means so much that through your loss and grief you could see how important Jonathan's message was and allowed him to leave us this amazing gift...Life, Love, Strength, and Song.
With deepest respect and admiration to you all,
Kelly
P.S. Anthony- can't wait to get a copy of your book!
Posted by: Kelly on 11/04/05 at 02:29 AM
Cannot wait to see the movie!!
To Idina and Taye- how is working on the set with the other??? Do you get all flirty with each other while at work??!? You two are the cutest couple ever!!!!
Love you all!!!
Adam, how was it filming One Song Glory? Its one of my favorite songs. Was it different then doing it as a live perfomance?
Posted by: Greg on 11/04/05 at 03:53 AM
Chris, have Anthony's acting skills improved since 1987? (Not that Adventures in Babysitting wasn't the coolest movie ever!)
To the guys, boxers or briefs?
Roasrio and Tracie, since doing the movie, would you ever consider doing Rent on stage?
Posted by: Amanda on 11/04/05 at 03:59 AM
Seeing as I'm living in France (and so the premiere here isn't until April 12), I'd like to know if you're going to do promption here, and, if you know, who will be coming?
And also, why isn't RENT released in the Nordic countries
(Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland)?
You're in my thoughts - Chris, the cast, the Larson family - everyday!
Love from a faithful (Norwegian) fan in France, Anne-Inger
Hey guys...I'm also excited awaiting for the movie release. And as for the dvd release it will be pre-order should it become available.
Here's my question...Is it hard to come out of character once your scenes/or filiming is done?
Have a great day.
Rent is such an amazing story that will be celebrating its ten-year reunion shortly. How does it feel to know that you are a part of a musical that is so widely loved?
Also for Chris Columbus: What pressures did you face in trying to keep RENT as close to the original as possible?
Posted by: Anastasia on 11/04/05 at 05:32 AM
Hey all!!!!
I do have two questions
First of all, how do you guys feel about you guys becoming popular Halloween customes this past year??? Especially Anthony and Rosario.
Second, do you feel that the movie is getting enough press or being overshadowed by a movie like Harry Potter?
Posted by: Blake on 11/04/05 at 05:34 AM
Hey guys, I just have a general question for everyone involved in the film. What are your feelings about how Jonathan would feel about the film adaptation of RENT? I know that it was still a work in progress when he passed and I am just curious as to how you and how his family feels Jonathan would have reacted to this adaptation. From the few tastes we have gotten from this site I am sure that he would be thrilled, but I wanted to get the points of view of people who worked closely with him as RENT was being made.
God bless you all!
To the members of the OBC:
Many of you will again be reviving these characters for the 10th anniversary benefit, so my question is: Do you, or do you think you ever could, get tired of playing these same characters?
Posted by: Colleen on 11/04/05 at 05:43 AM
hey guys.
Before I get started, I just wanted to thank you all for giving me something I have been looking for my whole life: a place and a way to belong. Becauseof RENT, I was finally able to become and accept Who I Am, and even more importantly, I know now that I am not alone in my choice of lifestyle. You have also helped me to com eout of my shell and after years of wishing, I finay got into theatre. Thank you for giving me a place to be.
My question for al of you is: What was the energy and the mood like when you guys first started to sing Jon's songs again, together, for the first time in several years? Also, if any of you could, what would you change about the film? For instance, would you have liked to have done Christmas Bells, added, or taken away from any of the scenes, etc?
Once again, thank you all so much. You are my inspiration, and if not for you, I would have never had the guts to be myself. I love you all very much.
Posted by: Emily L on 11/04/05 at 05:56 AM
Is there anything that you wish was in the movie that was in the play? Or something in the movie that you think should have been in the play? And if you have seen the movie: Were you scared that it wouldn't be up to your expectations? If you haven't seen the movie: Are you scared that it won't be up to your expectations?
These questions are for everybody!! Cast, Crew, I really don't care.
Oh one last question: After the movie are you going to keep posting on the blog or are you going to just stop?
Posted by: Megan on 11/04/05 at 06:12 AM
Jesse,
Now that you've worked on a popular TV show (Law & Order) for awhile and you've finished filming this movie, which mode of entertainment do you prefer, TV or film? What are the major differences between the two? Can we expect to see you in more movies?
Posted by: Julie on 11/04/05 at 06:21 AM
Question to alL!
What is your favorite Show you have ever done? eh...eh...
Posted by: Thomas! on 11/04/05 at 06:35 AM
I know Rosario has been doing most of the promoting of the movie, but will any of the rest of the cast be on any talk shows or whatever?
Posted by: brad on 11/04/05 at 06:41 AM
This is a question for the OBC.
I have heard that songs that were not put into the movie are used as diagolue in it. If this is true, Was it weird for you to speak these 'songs' that you know so well?
Posted by: Hayley on 11/04/05 at 07:02 AM
To Chris Columbus and Idina Menzel -
I think I may have to second the question asked above. Is the movie going to be presented in a manner where Maureen breaks the "fourth wall" of the screen and looks at the camera and invites the audience to moo? Is it proper to moo during the movie?
Posted by: m on 11/04/05 at 07:12 AM
Hi there, all.
With the release date fast approaching and television spots showing up more and more frequently, it's hard to ignore the attention that RENT is getting.
For the most part, though, the opinions I've seen have been from those people involved in production or from the RENTheads that will adore the film, regardless. While I'm sure, going by what I've seen, that I'm one of those people who is going to love RENT, it worries me that the few opinions I've seen from those who have no history with the show have been bitterly negative. From as objective a standpoint as you can give, how do you believe the moviegoing population that has never heard RENT before will accept the film, both from a technical and from an entertainment point?
Best of luck in the upcoming weeks!
Posted by: Genevieve on 11/04/05 at 07:15 AM
That's so great of you guys to answer questions.
I actually have a question for Idina. (as do most people!)
Idina,
I know that you're in See What I Wanna See right now. I saw it last week, my mom drove me from Philadelphia, and you were amazing! I was in the 2nd row! And I love the premise of the show. It really made me think about life and the way in which people view life.
Anyway, since you're currently busy, will you be promoting RENT at all? If you are, when? Can you guys make a list on the blogs of when and if you'll be on tv? Thanks! You're all amazing!
xoxo,
RENT is an amazing musical, I'm really enjoying the soundtrack!It's meant a great deal to me over the years. I am very excited about the motion picture. I have two questions for Taye and Jesse! Taye, do you have anymore plans to do more musicals? And Jesse. When you were first offered the part of Tom Collins,did you ever imagine you would have the success that has followed you since then?
Posted by: Erica on 11/04/05 at 07:22 AM
This is for anyone.
How are the people in your personal life, (family, friends, significant others, what have you) handling all the press and fame surrounding this movie? Is is strange to be spending time with them and see yourself in a commercial or have someone come up to you on the street? Do any of you have major stage-parents? :)
Dear all cast members,
hey! those clips from the RENT musicals are simply amazing! gd job guys!
well i've got one little question for you guys:
to the original cast: will any of you by any chance will be performing your amazing parts on the broadway stage again?
to the 'newbies':are you interested in performing your role on broadway? will you be doing this in the future?
thanks!
love,
RENT has been a pivotal part of theater history as well as some people's lives; my own included. I believe RENT's message of love, acceptance, and family has helped mold young minds and prevented prejudice.
How does it feel to be part of not only what is cleary an amazing show (and now motion picture), but also a voice and a teacher to society?
Posted by: Dani on 11/04/05 at 07:46 AM
This is for Idina..
Was is hard transitioning from a wicked witch to a performance dancer? I never saw Wicked, but I have the soundtrack and you are great! I also have the soundtrack to Rent. You sound so different. The two characters are two different personalities! I like all the songs that you sing in both! Can't wait until November 23rd!
Hello cast and crew,
First of all, thank you so much for being so available to your fans. Very rare, and very true to what I've read about how Jonathan Larson would have wanted things. From seats going for $20 on Broadway to his cast being a part of the community at-large, I definitely think this is something he would be extremely proud of. You've done him a great service.
Which leads me to my first question: Is there any kind of homage, subtle or otherwise, to Jonathan that we can see on the screen? Similar to the way the cast would "send applause up" to Johnathan after a show, I'm wondering if there will be something inherently "Jonathan" that will be visible in the picture?
My second question is probably more for the Original Broadway cast than anyone else. You guys know the story of RENT as well as the characters better than probably anyone, because it was you that shaped the characters and made the story complete. You were given a framework to work in and did your magic and now we have what we have. Looking at it from the characters prespectives, if they had free will to go outside of the script, what do you think each person would change in the events we see over the year in RENT? Is there a decision or action that takes place in the show that you think is particularly decisive that the character could choose differently or more wisely? I hope this question makes sense, because I know what I'm trying to say and even I am having a hard time following my thoughts here.
Anyway, thanks so much for your time. I simply cannot wait to see this movie.
Sincerely,
David P. Chesher
Adam and Anthony, I saw you when Rent came out on Broadway. Let me just say, you two are wonderful, but I have a question.
Was it harder to do What You Own on Broadway or in the movie? And is it going to be different then what I saw in the Broadway musical?
Love ya lots!
I would like to echo Shoshana Marc and Monika and ask about the relevancy of some of the themes of RENT 10+ years later. So much has changed since the 1990's - especially New York City and Alphabet City. It's more than just changes in "passing fads." It feels like a completely different place now - perhaps the sort of place that Benny wanted it to become then. Do you think that the film will help people to remember the 1990's? As NYers, what lessons do you think we can take from the film about that time and about New York today?
Also - I hope that Taye will answer Kristin's question about the relationship between Benny and Mimi. And as an aside - if that Kristin is the Kristin with whom I waited on the Rent Line for tickets four times in high school - email me, and we can go see the movie together! (billiemoon at yahoo)
Thank you to everyone for making this movie!
Reading some of the earlier blogs, I seem to remember someone saying something about a different release date for the UK? Is this right, or will it be 23 November over here as well?
I am like a baby witing for candy.
I know that this was asked earlier, but I'd really like to know if you guy expect Rentheads to sing/ moo along in theatres when we see the movie. I'm mooing no matter what :)
Also, for the cast... how do you guys feel about becoming movie stars? Are you looking forward to the recognition that you're going to get, or are you a bit nervous about it?
Posted by: Nikki on 11/04/05 at 08:35 AM
To Chris Columbus:
What were some of the specific obstacles you faced transitioning Rent from Broadway to a motion picture? We are aware that scenes and songs were cut, additional dialogue and scenes added, but were such transition changes difficult to make without Johnathan Larson?
To the Cast:
A number of people in the world are not Rentheads like myself and have no idea what this movie is about. If you were to try to convince them to see it, what would you say?
Thank you for this opportunity. I have always been a huge fan of Rent (expecially Idina and her unbelieveable voice).
Anthony, do you still do college tours? If so, how do I go about scheduling one?
For the cast, how closely do your interactions onscreen mirror your offscreen relationships?
Hello,
I would like to take two of my children (8 & 11)to see Rent. I really don't know what a PG-13 is. I know the "PG" stands for "Parental Guidance," but that's all I know. I realize that their will be scences of people or a person dying of AIDS; we have done volunteer work at hospitals so they are familiar with death. However, I don't want them seeing any inappropiate love scences. They are very excited to see Jesse Martin's performance. My 8 yob,is studying Classical Education, at home (we homeschool), and feels a connection with Jesse because of his Classically Trained background.
To the entire cast and crew:
If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only have one thing with you, what would it be?
Also, what are you guys planning to do around the time that RENT comes out? Like are you going to do any late night talk shows,etc?
How do you handle us crazy RENTheads? Is it fun or does it ever get old (or even scary)?
And Adam: Will you marry me???
A question for anyone and everyone willing to answer it:
Now that Rent is finally a movie, it will be much easier for more and more people to experience it in the future. With that prospect, how well do you think the story and the music will stand the test of time? Do you think that Rent will be considered a "classic?" Will it still be finding new fans 50 years from now?
And of course, great work to everyone, I can't wait for the movie.
Hi,
Director(Chris Columbus):-
What/How did you envision Jonathan's musical would be liked for the movie and how does it DIFFER from your own vision/perspective in the midst of shooting the movie with the cast?
Casts:-
a) OBC:-
With full knowledge that this musical has changed your life around. After tiresome/on-going tours and marketings, what are the new things/obstacles that you guys are experiecing/facing during those periods?
b) Rosario Dawson & Tracie Thoms:-
Awesome works comes with great compliments. While working with the OBC is everyone's dream and a life changing experience. What are your elaborations and stories? How did you 2 REALLY prepare?
Lastly, what is RENT to you all?
Appreciate the works and efforts that all had strive it, even the uncredited, into the movie. Jonathan's family is a blessing to all of us because til today they still live with his dreams and bring forth the movie to us. As for the cast, thanks for taking time to shape up the charaters and entertain us in many ways. God Bless.
Its 10 yrs later, where do you see the characters now in their lives? Is Mimi alive and well and still dancing? Did Mark finally get his big break at Sundance? Where are the characters now?
Hello Cast of RENT!
I am fairly new to the 'Renthead' scene, but have always been a fan. I saw the show on Broadway for the first time with my fiancee and have been enamored with the show ever since.
Two questions for you all:
1. If you could be any other character besides the one that you play, who would you be and why?
2. What one message do you want every person seeing the movie to come away with?
Thanks so much for giving me something to believe in. NO DAY BUT TODAY!
Will you be doing any press appearances/premieres in or around Chicago?
This is really for everyone...what do you want to see happen with this film? What kind of reception/reaction would you view as a "success" for the movie version of Rent?
Posted by: Michael Bihovsky on 11/04/05 at 11:51 AM
Three Questions 1 for each Idina, Tracie, and Wilson...
Idina---What was it like playing something totally different from you (Maureen) in front of the camera and on Broadway? Was it harder in the movie because you and Taye are married?
Tracie---In general, was it hard to play a character in love with another character whos husband was on set? Did it make you feel nervous?
Wilson---How different/Was it different playing a woman for most of the show for you?
Posted by: Jameson Corrie on 11/04/05 at 11:53 AM
okay, i've never seen Rent before but i had to sing "Seasons of Love" for my chours at my spring concert last year. and ever since i sang that song, i've been so excited for the movie!
so to the cast of Rent, what was your favorite song from Rent and why do like that song so much?
can't wait for the movie!
<3 always,
megan
To the Original Cast Members...
How did it feel stepping into your same role, but acting some scenes out with a different Joanne or Mimi? Had it become second nature to adopt the roles that you didn't even think about it, or did Tracie and Rosario bring about a different feel to RENT in which you had to adopt your character accordingly.
Thanks so much! I can't believe the wait is almost over! I finally bought the cast recording and everyone sounds absolutly amazing. You guys rock!!
Posted by: Heather on 11/04/05 at 11:55 AM
Hi. This one is for the cast. Were there any inside jokes, or rituals you had or anything like that?
And to anyone who would know, are the lines about Joanne's Doc Martens included in the film? I know it sounds weird, but I've been dying to know.
And to Idina (you don't have to answer this), is there any chance of you doing a concert in upstate NY *coughALBANYcough* anytime? Because I would totally go.
Posted by: justine on 11/04/05 at 11:55 AM
Um, first, I love you all. And Adam, if you were not already married and like, 20 years older than me, I would ask you to marry me.
But these questions are for Idina and Anthony.
Idina- When will your new album be released? I am so excited!
Anthony- When is your book coming out? I cant wait to get it and read it!
To any OBC cast memember:
Have any of you considered going back to broadway to do RENT again?
Posted by: Kelly on 11/04/05 at 11:59 AM
Rosario -- We all know Tracie was a RENThead, but had you ever been interested in the show before? Had you ever seen it, or listened to the CD? Were you approached for the part of Mimi, or did you audition? (If so, what was it like?)
To everyone: How does it feel to be so fabulous?
Love,
Grace
Hi Rent Cast!--
Do you have a favorite line/lines from a song from the show? --
Mine has always been:
"Draw a line in the sand
And then make a stand,
Use your camera to Spar
Use your guitar
When they act tough
You call their bluff-"
Rent is amazing. I thank you, cast, for sharing your gift of song, and creating such a beautiful show.
Hey cast and crew!
My question is: (and I've been dying to know this) Did you worry that, now that Rent is reaching a larger audience, some issues addressed in the story will cause controversy?
I hope you all know how excited us Rentheads are for the movie!
Tracie and Anthony: was doing the tango together fun?
This one has bothered me since the first time I saw Rent (no, not with you guys) and in all productions since then.
Where does Mark go? Maureen calls, he says, "Ok, alright, I'll go," slams the phone, and leaves.
A few songs later, he comes back in with Collins and Angel. Angel's already found Collins (so Mark's not doing that) and Mark hasn't seen Joanne yet (so he hasn't gone to help Maureen). Therefore, the question remains...where does Mark go?
Which character would you say is the most like YOU? (I'm def. a Roger)
Posted by: Sevak Gorgyan on 11/04/05 at 12:51 PM
o, and i have a question for Idina:
are you coming back to Wicked when this is all over? i recently saw Wicked and I listened to the soundtrack as well and you sound amazing on it! i would love to take my family to see it.
This question goes out to Idina, Wilson, and Tracie.
What is the greatest chalange that you face while playing a gay/lesbian character? How did you prepare for the role(on Broadway and or Movie)?
Thank you for your time.
Everyone so far has asked such serious questions, which is great, but I think I'll go with a question from the opposite side of the spectrum.
Now, I'm sure you all have heard of the TV show 'Fraggle Rock', and I wanted to know, who is your favorite Fraggle and why? Mine is Boober.
Posted by: Traci on 11/04/05 at 01:05 PM
Hey I really don't know if somebody asked this already, but my question is for Anthony. Many people (including myself) have known you as the embodiment of the Rent spirit. I mean, you have been with this show through it all, from NYTW and now the movie. Is there anything in particular that embodies Rent for you? A person or a place?
Also, for Jesse (and the rest of the OBC as well) is there anything(s) that you have changed about your character from the stage to the screen?
Thanks! Nineteen days. HOLLA!
Will you be willing to come and promote the film overseas, like in London?
Posted by: Katie on 11/04/05 at 01:08 PM
To Adam: I think you are absolutely amazing. I have seen you in AIDA, and you blew me away. Are you returning to any Broadway projects anytime soon?
To the cast: What has been the hardest part about playing your character?
To the OBC: What do you think Jonathan would think of the movie?
First off, lots of love for all of you!
My question is,
How many of you (cast members) want to continue with a movie career instead of the stage? I've been hearing rumors about some of the cast wanting to do more movies...
Hope you anwser, i'd love to see all of you on the big screen. And thank you all so much for caring and replying to the fans comments, we love you all.
Do you recomend watching the musical before or after the move ?
Posted by: elisabeth on 11/04/05 at 01:25 PM
To all: I've always wondered how it works filming a musical - what comes first, the singing/recording or the acting? In other words, do you first record the music, then block and act accordinly, or is it the reverse? The soundtrack sounds so "live" - did y'all rehearse prior to recording so that you had a sense of how the singing and songs should sound when you recorded them?
As this is my first post, I have to say - I am thrilled about the movie and absolutely can't wait. Thank you all, Chris included, for having such an ongoing involvement with the fans throughout this process and in giving such an influential and beautiful musical the passion and love it so greatly deserves.
With Love,
Kate
heyy! i just saw the brodway show a week ago and fell in LOVE with the musical!! i am EXTREMELY excited for the movie to come out! i just have one question for you: i am an actress and live for the stage. my dream has been to be on broadway ever since i can remember. i have had this one dream consistently for many weeks, where i am asking a star how they got to broadway(or the movies) and made it big time but i never get an awnser. i want to be on the stage SO badly! i was wondering if i could mabye finally get my question awnsered, it would mean SO much to me, nobody in the world understands how much i want to be on broadway (well, mabye you guys :) ). thanks so much for your time,
I just love hearing cute stuff that happens during movies, and sets and stuff, so my question is...
What was one of the biggest bloopers or funny moments that happened while shooting the movie?
Posted by: Heather on 11/04/05 at 01:48 PM
Any crazy fan stories?
Fun stuff that happened behind the camera, or backstage?
Have you guys seen the movie yet?
Was the crew nice?
Posted by: Katie L on 11/04/05 at 01:49 PM
I just finished reading the companion book for the original production of RENT. It discussed how many were concerned that the production treat the homosexual relationships simply as relationships that just happened to be gay, specifically for Joanne and Maureen. As actors, how do you strive to reach that goal where no undue attention is created for the homosexual relationships? For those of you in the cast who are gay, how well do you feel the film portrays the reality of your perspectives on life? Do you feel pressure in this tense society to create an accurate and somewhat eye-opening view of the gay community in such an anticipated and undoubtedly soon-to-be acclaimed film?
Posted by: Joe R. on 11/04/05 at 01:50 PM
First of all, I'd like to say you are all amazing and I can't wait for the movie to come out. Anyway, my question may sound incredibly stupid, but did Jonathan Larson write "Love Heals"?
Posted by: Laura on 11/04/05 at 02:05 PM
Chris Columbus: What were the biggest challenges you faced when filming the movie? Why did you choose to cast most of the original Broadway cast instead of unknowns or smaller know actors?
Also is there any chance that when RENT come out on DVD that you could include theses little blog/ behind the sean shots on the extras?
Original Broadway Cast: I heard that you guys used to joke about who would play you on the silver screen; what where some of the names that came up?
Everyone: how do you feel knowing that ‘die hard’ Rent heads will be watching this movie and picking it apart compared to the stage show? What would you say to those people?
What was the biggest mistake made on set?
To everyone thank you so much for keeping up theses blogs and communicating with the fans through this whole process this is a truly amazing think you all have done for us.
And remember if you head out on the road to do promotions or anything, we love you in Colorado ^^
Best of luck and love to everyone.
Looks like IDINA wins AGAIN in the blog questions.
I love her. I have even have her Minuet video on my blog!
Posted by: Patrick M. on 11/04/05 at 02:32 PM
Were you at all worried about the movie living up to the reputation of the show and vice versa for anyone who would see the show after seeing the movie?
Posted by: Cassie on 11/04/05 at 02:32 PM
To Adam, Anthony, Wilson, Jesse, Idina, Taye:
How do you feel about the whole "Rent phenomenon"? How would you compare the Rent movie experience to the Broadway experience (in terms of fan reaction)? Would you change anything about your experiences?
To Tracie and Rosario:
As newcomers to the cast, what's it like being in the midst of all these crazy Rentheads? :) How do you deal (or how are you planning to deal) with the inevitable comparisons to Daphne and Fredi? Given the chance, would you consider reprising your roles on Broadway? On a related note, are you planning to pursue more musical roles?
Posted by: Michelle on 11/04/05 at 02:34 PM
I just want to start off by thanking all of you for keeping up with the blog and for keeping us crazy fans in mind throughout the project.
This question is for Idina- Do the hoards of screaming 13 year old girls standing outside of See What I Wanna See scare you?
Posted by: Victoria on 11/04/05 at 02:35 PM
I was reading the comments and questions above me and I saw that a lot of people who are talking about the movie are probably in their late teens, early twenties. However, there are quite a few younger people who just like to say, "UR RLY HAWT!!!!!11one".
So my question is for everyone: Do you enjoy the attention you are recieving for the movie? Adam Pascal has thirteen-year-olds hanging his face on their walls, Idina Menzel's got young girls going, "ohmygoshyouaremyheroohmygosh". Do you like this attention/does it flatter you or embarass you?
I know that I don't think I'd particularly enjoy everyone in the country wanting me for themselves, as much as I like getting attention, I can see that sometimes too much is too much and can turn even the compliments into something much disliked. My mother is an actress (or was, before she retired from it, sadly) and I know she dislikes over-zealous complimenters, so I was just wondering what "big stars" thought about the topic.
Good luck in all future endeavors, to all of you,
Lilia
First things first - I love you all!
For Tracie and Rosario --- Was it hard to join the original cast of RENT, seeing as they'd all known each other for years? Were you afraid that you wouldn't be accepted?
For the original cast --- What was it like to add two new people to the cast?
And to Idina --- Can you estimate the number of people that will be mooing in the theater at the end of Over the Moon? You can count me in!
Posted by: Katy on 11/04/05 at 02:41 PM
This one's for the cast, did you guys actually sang for every take in the movie or if it was more lip synching or singing under your breath to a track? If you actually sang, did you ever lose your voice?
And on the editing side of things, was it hard to edit the movie to keep the rhythm of the show moving along musically and with the actors' lips?
Posted by: Brad on 11/04/05 at 02:43 PM
This is a bit different from what other people have been asking but most of my questions concerning Rent have already been asked =)... I've been dancing for several years and I'm now a junior in high school...everyone expects me to persue medicine or law.. but I would love to persue performing arts/ musical theater. The problem is 1) Although my voice isn't that bad I haven't had much professional vocal training and 2) I don't want to let everyone down...so you all have any suggestions for me or others in similar situations?
>>Rent is amazing...can't wait 'till the 23rd.
Hey Cast!
This first question is to Idina.
Idina,I'm a huge Wicked Fan, and I was wondering if it was hard to go from playing Elphaba to Maureen.
This one is to all of you who have been on Boradway, Do you have any advice for a aspering Broadway Actress?
I am SO excited about RENT coming out. The soundtrack is phenomenal and I expect the movie to be the same. Ever since a friend of mine introduced me to RENT (and I introduced him to Wicked) I have been obsessed. As a musician myself and a music teacher, I think its fantastic that musicals are coming back in full force. And making a musical like this into a movie, touches the lives of those who would have never been able to see it on stage.
My question is, if you had the chance to play a role from any other musical that was being made into a film, which one would you enjoy playing the most?
Thank you so much for hours of fun! I am look forward each day til the 23rd. And thank you for the blog videos and posts, they are so much fun to read!
Hey RENT cast!! I love all of you and keep up the great work on the blogs!
Anyway, here's a question for idina:
After See What I Wanna See, do you have any plans for the future? Are you thinking about making another CD? Cuz I really think you should :)
For Taye:
It must be awesome working with your wife so much! Anyway, do you also have any plans for the future? I love all your movies!
And for the whole cast:
Obviously, all your lives have been changed by this wonderful show. What parts would you say were the most inspirational to you and how do you think RENT will change your lives and outlook on like in the future?
Thank you to everyone that is a part of this movie!!
Posted by: Jenny on 11/04/05 at 03:25 PM
To all the cast members and Chris --
Do you think society's natural fear of what they dont understand will cause RENT problems at all?
Will they be to narrow minded about the subject matter that they forget what RENT really is about?
Posted by: Marcus on 11/04/05 at 03:30 PM
Four years ago I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Not long after, I saw RENT for the first time and it made me realize that my life can be a wonderful adventure filled with dreams and love even though it may not last as long I would have hoped. Now I'm finding my own 'Glory' in medical school, living out my dream. The two lines that send chills down my spine every time I hear them are: "How can you connect in an age where... your own blood cells betray?" and "To people living with... not dying from disease."
My question for the cast is:
Are there any specific lines in RENT that you connect to your own lives, any that touch you personally and give you that overpowering chill?
Posted by: Mandy on 11/04/05 at 03:41 PM
As a student director, I have often wondered how difficult it was to maintain the image of RENT through the eyes of a brand new director. Was it difficult to carry through Larson's vision without stepping on any toes? If so, whose toes were they and do they need a bandaid?
For Joanne and Rosario: How did it feel to join this project knowing that the rest of the cast was already friends? For all of you: How do you feel about he final project and how do you think they origina RENTheads, such as myself will react to the movie? I would love to hear from all of you!!! To Mr. Columbus:
What parts from the original stage production did you have to cut out of the final version of the film? And, why did you make those cuts? Specifically talking about "Goodbye Love" and "Halloween"...those are two of the strongest moments in the play and I don't understand how they wouldn't end up in the final movie version.
Adam,
You said in the blog, that you were not happy with the original Broadway Cast Soundtrack. What was it that you didn't like about that one or felt that soundtrack didn't capture? And what changes did you want to focus on for the new Movie Soundtrack to make it more aesthetically pleasing for you.
How close friendships have you all formed by first being on broadway together, and now the movie? Oh, and if you're reading this, BTW, you are all my heroes!!!
Posted by: Erin on 11/04/05 at 04:22 PM
Idina,
I have been a big fan of yours for a long time now and I am amazed at the talent that you have. I myself love musical theatre and acting and I would really enjoy to be an actor on Broadway someday. That is my life long dream. I went to your website and read your biography and learned a little bit on how you got involved in theatre. I would really like to know more about how you got involved and what inspired you. If at all possible, could you reccommend anything that would help lead me in the right path? I up to you as a role model along with many other adults and young children and I hope that I will hear back from you soon. Thanks for your time!:)
I hate to say that my question may be a repeat amongst the 200something responses already, but here we go:
I have loved Rent since 7th grade when my new theater friends blasted "What You Own" to an unprecedented volume 10 on their boom boxes and harmonized the best they could.
However, even though thousands of people worldwide share my love for this show, there are a lot of people that don't or will be thrown for a loop when they discover how truthful this movie/show is.
So my question is for Mr. Columbus...Do you think this movie will spark controversy? It's PG-13 rating will allow a whole new generation to see the wonder that is our beloved RENT, but do you ever fear a censorship backlash?
To everyone:
What is your favorite toast/line in La Vie Boheme?
To Adam:
This is rather random, but I'm curious. Have you ever met a fan that randomly whipped out a candle and asked you to light their candle? See, told you it was random. And quite ironic as Light My Candle just started playing... :)
Much love,
Sarah
Do any of you (besides wonderful fellow Renthead Tracie) listen to the OBCR or the new soundtrack at home? If it was someone else on the recording would you be more inclined to?
Which song was hardest to film?
What was it like to have to lip-sync all of the songs?
Posted by: Rachel on 11/04/05 at 04:57 PM
hey, I absolutely loved rent on broadway,
and so when I heard that they were making a movie I was extremely excited (and a but worried that they would loose the heart of rent)
but that fact that they casted you all was an absolute comfort!! lol
nyways, my question is, what would you say (you as in you the character, the director, ya know) would say was the hardest part from going from the stage to movie?,
and what were some of the benefits in doing so?
and what things do you wish you could have done differently?
thnx,
Hey cast and crew (I almost feel bad for this long list of questions... you all deserve a breather after all the hard work I'm sure you've put in on the movie) I was wondering if you'll be doing any more appearences/performances in NYC after the movie is in theaters? And is a video/dvd being considered or will Rent only be in theaters?
Posted by: Hope on 11/04/05 at 05:01 PM
um, we would just like to know why the trailer we saw back in july said the movie was coming out on the 11th of november. because as i am sure you are well aware, it is actually coming out on the 23rd. but see, we didn't know that when we started planning my birthday festivities, and have planned a large portion of the evening around going to see RENT! on screen. THE EVENING OF THE 11TH!!!!!!!!!
why did you do this to us? why did collins pick that phone booth and why did mimi knock on roger's door? but seriously, why. we need answers now.
Hey Rent Cast!!!
To all cast members:
- What are your next projects??? Any shows or movies coming up??
-Also, are you guys doing any other concert-like events like Bryant Park again for those who couldnt make it to that event??
Thanks!!! Love to you all<333
Hey everyone! This is basically a question for anyone in the cast:
Did you ever think that you'd be involved in something that would touch the hearts of millions?
And this one is for Chris:
If Jonathan Larson (may he rest in peace) was here today, do you think he'd be happy with this movie?
Anyway, if you actually answer these questions, thank you so much. *muah!*
Posted by: Jasmine on 11/04/05 at 05:22 PM
Is it everything you've ever imagined it to be? (and more?)
Posted by: Alicia on 11/04/05 at 05:39 PM
Hi Everyone!
I have always wonders if the song "Over the Moon" had a connection to the children's book "Harold and the Purple Crayon." Does anyone know? Thanks.
Posted by: Tara on 11/04/05 at 05:50 PM
This has bugged me for 10 years...
Okay, Collins calls Mark, Mark tosses down the key, then Collins gets mugged...where does the key go?
I don't really expect an answer, but it's one of those nitpicks (that and where does Roger get a guitar for La Vie Boheme "...and Roger will attempt to write a bittersweet evocative song..." when he doesn't have one in the song before?) that has driven me crazy for years.
I do have a "real" question for all of you- So much was made of the "favored nations" contract
that the OBC entered into when the show went from NYTW to Broadway. Without getting into specifics, was a similar contract structure offered for the film? If not, what factors played into the contract negotiations?
If you can indulge me in one more as well-- what is the one change from the musical to the film about which you think Jonathan Larson would have said, "I didn't think of it, but I love it?"
Can't wait to see the film in just a couple of weeks!!
Posted by: Julia on 11/04/05 at 05:56 PM
Hey cast and Chris! I'd like to know: did anyone get to keep a memorable prop or piece of clothing? More specifically, where is Mark's scarf right now?
So much love for all of you guys! Counting the days until the 23rd!
Posted by: Missy on 11/04/05 at 06:32 PM
Chris- was the movie more of a challenge for you or was it easier compare to other movie you have directed ie. Harry Potter 1, 2?
For the cast:
What was your favorite course in high school and what would you do in life if you weren't an actor/actress
Thanks
To the cast of Rent:
I've found a lot of hope and dreams in the words for the musical. I wanted to ask you all...what is the one line that absolutely makes you believe in "No Day But Today"?
I'm very excited about the movie. And I'm very excited that Anthony and Adam signed on.
This question is for everyone in the cast:
Can you tell us about your love life?
Posted by: Claudiane on 11/04/05 at 06:59 PM
For the whole cast (whom I love greatly):
What advice would you give to an aspiring actor/actress that wishes to pursue musical theatre as a full time career? (This is coming from a high school student, so part of my question is what should I be doing even now.)
Thank you for your time!
DID THE ORIGINAL CAST MEMBERS HAVE TO RE-AUDITION FOR THEIR ROLES?
Posted by: Jaye on 11/04/05 at 08:00 PM
Hi, Rent is the BEST! My question is if you could take one concept from Rent and apply it to the world, which would it be? Measuring life in love or taking me for who i am, no day but today or One song Glory, forgetting regret for life is yours to miss or having today for you tomorrow for me? Rent is so cool because all different lessons can be learnt from it? I thinks it's impossible to see Rent and not have some sort of profound meaning!! Thanks for being my candle!!
Hello cast and the director!
I have a question about the limited edition CD. Is that on sale right now? Also if it is would I be able to buy it on amazon.com or other online shopping places?
I have another quesiton (for the casts)
I want to become a theater actress and I want to take dancing lessons but which dancing lessons should I take? Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop etc.
Thank you very much! and have a great time!
Posted by: Yukino on 11/04/05 at 08:12 PM
This is for the OBC, What was Johnathan Larson like when you were rehearsing and was it hard to go on opening night?
This one is for Anthony, Do you ever think of how much the story relys on the fact that you make the story come toghether(is there any pressure) and what did it feel like on the last day of shooting?
See you on the screen November 23rd
P.S. I hope to play your part on a stage production
Posted by: Eric on 11/04/05 at 08:20 PM
For those who were lucky enough to work with Larson before his death, do you think that the film adaptation properly conveys the message that Larson was able to convey in his stage production? Was it emotional to reunite after all these years? and lastly, did it Feel like opening night all over again?
Posted by: Katrina Donovan on 11/04/05 at 08:35 PM
this is just a general question. We all know that the official RENT release date is 11/23, but is the movie still being released in select theaters on 11/11?
Posted by: Samma on 11/04/05 at 08:44 PM
This ones for Wilson,
How do you think the world will view Angel? He is a very unique character, and you have to have a certain openness to understand and accept it, and anyone other then a Renthead may take it offensively. I was wondering if you had dealt with this before, when you actually played Angel on stage, and if so how was it? Are you afraid that the movie will make it worse? You have a great deal of courage, not many could play the character, let alone perfect it as you have.
Posted by: Brandon on 11/04/05 at 09:02 PM
When John passed away, and you where on stage what was the first thing that went through your mind?
Rent changed my life weh my aunt died it made see that you have live each day like it's your last thats when i decided that rent had changed me it is an amzing musical like no other. this for chris and the cast what was the hardest secene to shoot in the movie?
This is a question for anyone in the cast: If you could play any other character in RENT, besides your own, who would you pick and why?
You all are awesome!! I can't wait to see the movie!!!
Thanks!
Idina, I just have to say that my friend and I absolutely love you!!! You have the most AMAZING voice I have ever heard! From Rent to Wild Party to Still I Can't Be Still to Wicked everything you do is just awesome. Your voice has given us a reason to enjoy long commutes in the car, blasting whatever and pretending that we can sing as well as you! I'm sure you've heard all of this before but here it is again, keep it up!
Posted by: Erin on 11/04/05 at 10:11 PM
Idina- you have said yourself that dancing isn't your forte. Was it hard for you to learn to tango so well?
Posted by: Samantha on 11/04/05 at 10:53 PM
I have a question for Chris... is there anything I can do for you, because I feel so incredibly indebted to you for making this film in this way, with these wonderful people and making sure that it stays true to it's roots and to its fans. Really, if you need anything... babysitting, coffee-gophering... cleaning, cooking... ;). Serriously, thank you so much for this film, I'm happy to say it follows a long line of other films of yours that are among my favorites, but this one is going to be beyond anything I have ever or will ever see.
God Bless you. xo, Amanda
Posted by: Amanda C on 11/04/05 at 10:57 PM
My question is for Idina...
Do you WANT people to moo when they see the movie in theaters? On all the boards it's becoming a big controversy, whether we should moo because we'd moo at the show, or whether it'd be obnoxious. Let's just say you were seeing the movie in a theater- would you be happy if audience members moo'd?
Posted by: Elizabeth on 11/04/05 at 10:58 PM
What's next? :)
Posted by: Kimo on 11/04/05 at 11:20 PM
Mr Columbus,
One more dvd question. Did you film the cast recording the soundtrack? If so, would it be included in the special features a la The Producers? With "Love Heals" being new, it would be interesting to see how the arrangement came to be. I know any and all behind the scenes features would be much appreciated by the fans.
Cast:
No questions to ask this time. They have been more than covered. Just looking forward to this movie more than any other, ever!
Thanks for your time.
Idina and Tracie: What type of vocal warm-ups and excersises do you do?
Entire Cast: How has Rent affected you personally and your views on life?
Chris: How was working with the majority of the OBC on this movie as opposed to working with more mainstream actors/actresses i.e. Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie? Did they get the opportunity to contribute input as far as how the musical should be portrayed on screen?
Posted by: Aliyah on 11/05/05 at 12:38 AM
For the cast,
Speaking as actors, what was the most significant character breakthrough you had in the course of connecting (and reconnecting) with your character?
Thanks, keep up the good work and thank you for being so communicative,
TO CAST AND CHRIS COLUMBUS,
Hi, I live in Australia and haven't had the priveledge of seeing the show but I am a big fan of the music and the stars of the movie (esp. idina and rosario) Unfortunately, I must wait until March before the film is released in Australia *cries*. OK, but my question is...
Do you think that people from countries other than America can identify with RENT? because it has been around the world but it has only really been a success in America. Why do you think this is? I find it difficult to some of the aspects of RENT because I do not completely understand American culture and I was just wondering if you think that geographical and cultural differences affect the core messages that Jonathan Larson was trying to present?
Posted by: Justin on 11/05/05 at 01:54 AM
Hello,
Yesterday, I posted a question about taking two of my children to see RENT, they have become fans of Mr. Martin's after we read about him being Classically Trained, etc. I wrote that they are getting a Classical Education through homeschooling, etc. Anyway, I apologize for writing before taking a good look at the website. I now see the information that "strongly cautions" parents about the move. Therefore, I'm sorry to say that they will not be able to see Jesse.
I will go see the movie, but unfortunatly, I can't take them.
Thank you.
Posted by: Angela on 11/05/05 at 03:26 AM
For Chris:
As a director, your name has always been closely associated with children's films. RENT is about as different from most of your pictures as one can imagine. What attracted you to the project in the first place?
(Whatever it was, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.)
P.S. - By the way, how much has Anthony grown as an actor since "Adventures in Babysitting," and what's still the same about him after 18 years?
Posted by: PJ aka "Daddy Renthead" on 11/05/05 at 05:50 AM
I'm always interested in backstory: for example, I love how we get glimpses of the characters' past through the parents' phone calls. Did any of the actors develop their characters' backstory? After all, we get to see how Angel/Collins and Roger/Mimi meet, but do y'all have ideas on how Joanne and Maureen met? Or on how the original roommates (Benny, Mark, Roger, Maureen (?), Collins (?)) came together?
Posted by: VK on 11/05/05 at 06:59 AM
Ok- so I have about 525,600 questions..
1. To any obc member: What was it like seeing each other after 9 years? Have you guys kept in touch? Did you guys have fun seeing Yaz?- I was talking to her and she said it was awesome to see all of you.
2. To Rosario: I was at the Josie and the Pussycats premiere when I was about 10. I think I might have seen you there. :P
3. For Wilson: Come see the movie at the theatre in Yonkers! Westchester represents! (You too, Adam)
4. For Everyone: Will you light my candle?
5. For Idina: You may not be able to answer this, but which was the best experience- Rent on b-way, Rent the movie, or Wicked? If you can't answer it, how was each a different and wonderful experience?
6. For everyone: Have you seen Rent on b-way recently? The Neder misses you guys!!
7. For everyone: Excited for the 10th year anniversary?
8. For everyone: Anyone going to China?
That's all I'll ask for now. Thanks for listening!
What is one line or song from the play/movie that inspires you or touches you? Also, what is everyone's favorite song to either perform or listen to?
Posted by: Bella on 11/05/05 at 07:09 AM
A question for the director:
I am a very big fan of broadway in general and seeing the shows being brought to the general public through film form is an incredible joy for me. However, when Phantom of the Opera was turned into a silver screen hit, I was less than impressed. Other than the excellent instrumental music, the sets and some of the costumes, the movie, quite bluntly sucked. My personal belief is that the casting director should have been run out of town and lynched. (please forgive my bluntness , being a New Yorker and an avid play-goer I'm very passionate about the subject). Now, my question is, there are a lot of Rent-aholics and fanatics who desperately want this movie to be good so, do you feel at all pressured or nervous about the release? Also, building on the concept of casting, why did you give the majority of the roles to the original broadway cast instead of mainstream actors or so-called "undiscovered talents"? And finaly, if you were going to use members of the original broadway cast, why did you only cast certain members of the original cast instead of using the full original cast (as in all of the original players of major roles)?
Posted by: Irina on 11/05/05 at 07:22 AM
For the cast - If someone was to want to start a professional theater career, what advice would you give to beginners of how to get started, etc.?
And a big thank you to all of you for this movie. I constantly wonder if the 8 of you, plus Fredi and Daphne, realize how much you mean to people like me.You're all true inspirations and I look up to you more than words can say. I've been lucky enough to see Idina in Wicked, and it was one of those "life-affirming" experiences, as was my first Rent experience. The moment in "What You Own" when Mark says "call me a hypocrite but i need to finish my own film .. i quit! Dyin in America..." --- right then is when I felt that Rent had truly changed my life and I'd like to thank all of you for being a part of that. Although I didn't see any of you in Rent, it was because of your characters that you played that allowed other people to take on the same persona and make me feel what I felt. I owe that to you and I love you all and thank you from the bottom of my heart. You truly have no idea what you mean to me. =)
Love,
Alyssa D.
Hey guys-
You are all doing a fantastic job. But I have a question for Tracie Thoms and Rosario Dawson;
Was it hard to try and mold into the characters of Joanne and Mimi because everyone around you had already been a part of the Original Broadway Cast?
Thanks for listening! :)
Posted by: Marie on 11/05/05 at 07:36 AM
For all the Cast members,
My favorite moment in the whole musical is when, as Roger is really emotinal and bitter and alone in the apartment, at the same time, Gordon is at life support and tells paul "because reason says i soud have died 3 years ago," Roger turns to face up toward the audience, almost as if he was crying (maybe he is) and sings that line The same time as Gordon, and it just really moved me deep inside.
For the Cast:
What is your favorite moment/scene in the musical, the one that moves you the most or just really gets to you the most?
Also, i know there are many great lines in the lyrics and also great spoken lines in the musical...if you had to pick one line that just really has impact on you, it could be a phrase or a stanza, what would that be?
Lastly, by now you guys probably know how important RENT means to us fans, that its one of those few particular things that keep us going, keep us inspired, that has given us that 360 turn to seeing the world and life, and our own personal journey in it an a new way and for that it will always be a part of us as much as we are a part of it. ---
--is there something or was there something in your life that meant as much to you as RENT means to us, that you just feel is a part of you and has been a great inspiration to your life and your art and that you just feel so strongly about and moved by? ...it doesnt have to be another musical. ;)
Posted by: noelle on 11/05/05 at 07:45 AM
What values and understanding about life can you take away from RENT, especially in the Finale, No Day But Today?
You are all truly an inspiration.
How did it feel taking up these roles (again in most cases) and in Rosario's case, how does it feel knowing that you have a role I would DIE to have (especially if Adam's Roger haha), does it feel like you have big shoes to fill (both Rosario and Tracie)
This is for the cast:
What parts of your characters do you find in yourselves?
Posted by: Clare Nolan on 11/05/05 at 08:03 AM
for Adam:
How does it feel, through the blogs and other means, to see that so many people just love your work and just really enjoy your voice and the songs that you write and just think you're plain awesome...that, you're also appreciated outside of the world of RENT, that people appreciate you, the musician,the singer, the actor, that people come to watch you on broadway, some from across the world, that we all just think you're one of the best people in your field of work and on meeting you, we would just be the happiest people...do you sometimes get tired of hearing about it or is it always exciting? I guess im just interested to hear about everything from where you're seeing it, from where you're standing, being one of your big fans. ;)
Hello Cast and Crew:
I just wanted to say I LOVE Rent, it has touched my life in ways you can never imagine. That being said:
1.) Tracie - I love your voice, and I was just wondering if you channeled any part of Fredi's performance in your own?
2.) Anthony - I discovered RENT right around when my mother passed away also, How did your personal tradegy change the way you portray Mark?
Posted by: Andrew on 11/05/05 at 09:21 AM
Hey there.
I was just wanting to ask you guys, do you think that the movie will have a positive effect on the stage production? Do you think more people will see it on stage because they enjoyed the movie? Or do you think the movie might have a negative effect? Maybe people don't think they need to see the show because they've already seen the movie?
Also, I would like to know if the movie version will have any impact on the way the show is performed on stage. Will they perform it differently?
One more question... Did you folks (who were in "Rent" onstage)enjoy making the movie more than performing in the show? What are the pros and cons to each situation?
Thank you for your very valuable time.
Fanatic Adoration,
wow there are so many questions..my question is--why did you chose to change the time of the movie, both in what year its now in and things like in out tonight 'new years day'.. and secondly, for those of us who are not fortunate enough to be able to go to the 10th anniversary, do you think its at all possible to tape this somehow and maybe it available for people to see..or perhapes have another show in honor of 10 years..thats not a benefit. thank you!. This is for the entire cast and crew: What do you think are RENT's oscar chances after CHICAGO and PHANTOM? Do you feel like there will be a huge competiton between RENT and THE PRODUCERS?
Posted by: Margot on 11/05/05 at 10:37 AM
who is the funniest person on set?
who has the best singing voice (this is a tough one :))?
Posted by: Karen on 11/05/05 at 10:42 AM
This is for Wilson: Being the only cast memeber of RENT to win a Tony, do you feel like you have a good chance of winning the oscar? Do you also feel like there will be a big competiton between you and Gary Beach of THE PRODUCERS, since he also won a Tony for his role and both characters are very simular?
Posted by: Margot on 11/05/05 at 10:43 AM
This is for Chris: Out of curiosity, whom did you originally consider for each role when you were first attached to RENT? Thanks again for hiring (most of) the original broadway cast!
Posted by: Margot on 11/05/05 at 10:54 AM
When did you know that theatre/film was what you wanted to do, and please elaborate! Love you all.
Posted by: Sarah on 11/05/05 at 10:56 AM
OMG OMG OMG 18 dayyyssss!! I CANNOT WAIT. okay, sorry i am so pumped you (probably do) dont even know!!!
i am so happy to see you guys on tv, i always start singing and then i cant stop...oh goshhh
question for everyone- what/who was the funniest thing/person on set?
idina-ahh youre so pretty and talented and i love you, and im so happy about your new record deal because i bought both your cd's at your concert in p'town and i love them as much as my RENT soundtrack (that my friend is an absurd amount of love)---im so happy for you, i hope this movie launches your career even more! will you ever go back to RENT or WICKED? (i unfortunately never got to see you in rent nor wicked, but my theater teacher did and she said you kicked butt...no surprise there-hello, youre awesome?!)
taye-ah i love you too, youre so hansome and your voice is amazing, and oh gosh youre great i got the benny cover :) (i had wanted the maureen one, but it wasnt there so i decided to get benny because i love you both-as idina and taye-i'm ranting so i should stop...was it really weird to see your wife kissing another woman,and anthony (even though it was acting)? and was it sad that you had less of the "group thing" going on since benny isnt a main "friend"?
anthony- you are so sweet, i'll always remember the time you spent with our corner of the crowd at the today show-you know-the people who got there at 2 am to see you all, who were singing the soundtrack all the way through since we got there. youre just the sweetest person, and im so glad i got to meet you. how did you feel about becoming mark once again? knowing that you havent known him for a while.
adam-youre freaking gorgeous...im not a fan of the long hair, but hey, your face is nice :)
rosario- i love your "out tonight" video...how do you feel about mimi?
tracie-your voice is so beautiful i sort of wanna cry sometimes during seasons of love!(that sounds really weird, but i didnt want it to)you rock! being a RENThead yourself, were yuo like "HOLY COW I GET TO KISS IDINA MENZEL, AND TANGO WITH ANTHONY RAPP" because, c'mon, shes freakin awesome, and so is he. what was it like living the dream for all of us RENTheads. was it as good as it looks?
Wilson-kisses youre so cool! was it fun to be angel again?
Jesse-my mom loves you, so do i, but my mom REALLY loves you! lol. when she drives me to school, she blasts the i'll cover you reprise, and she shushes me when im singing your part. apparently im not a good enough singer to cover your part. lol, so funny. anywayy...youre really good at getting the audience to feel your emotions..as an actor where on earth do you get that "umph", if you will, for the reprise?
im really sorry for the long post, but i love you guys and wish you all the luck in the world for your careers, lives, everything!!
and if i were the academy, i would so give you all an award (many awards actually), but thats me...LOVE YOU!!!xoxo
Love Always,
Amanda Sharp
Posted by: Amanda Sharp on 11/05/05 at 11:12 AM
Chris - who is your favorite character in Rent and why? What do you think the audience should take away with them after they leave the movie theatre?
Posted by: Erik on 11/05/05 at 11:42 AM
Okay, now for the rest of the cast:
I already said this to Idina, but are you all aware that you are violating the 8th Ammendment of the constituion? Waiting for this movie is cruel and unusual punishment! I can't wait! Ahhhhhhhhh!
Sincerely, your constitution reading, but not going to law school, diet coke drinking, Italian art loveing, not blonde, friend,
Christen
PS: I'm serious, Anthony. You are freakin gorgeous! XOXO
Don't worry, Dee, i didn't forget you. Your still my idol. I was Elphaba for Halloween. But no one understood why i said, "Defy Gravity" at every house. I had fun de-greenifying myself! Yay! ...moo.
Posted by: Christen on 11/05/05 at 01:44 PM
This is for Chris, and for the entire cast:
What do you each hope to accomplish with this film? How will you measure its success? What has making this movie meant to you? What did you learn from the experience? If you had only one sentence to tell someone why they should see this movie, what would you say?
Most importantly: Will we see a sequel?
(just kidding!!!)
=)
Posted by: KI on 11/05/05 at 02:17 PM
I'm so excited to see the movie from the trailers it looks amazing.
I was wondering how Rosario and Tracie felt about joining the original cast members. It seems that all of you have meshed very well is that true?
Posted by: Gabriela on 11/05/05 at 02:58 PM
You all refrain from using the pet name "pookie" for loved ones...right?
Posted by: Nessa on 11/05/05 at 03:02 PM
This one is more for Anthony than anyone, but any response may help-
I've suffered from depression problems my whole life, which isn't that long, knowing I'm 17 in a month. Over the summer, a friend got me, well, addicted to Rent, and I was able to relate so personally to Mark, to the point I thought Jonathan Larson had written about me, just using my dad's name. I know what it feels like to be alone, no matter how many people are around me or even how many I know truly care about me. But singing along sometimes, I truly feel like I'm telling my life's story.
Thank you.
Truly my question is can anyone help me, more than just using the Credo? As I said ANY comment or even solution would help so much, knowing I do life like there's no day but today. I ask for anthony to see if he can atleast comment is because he is Mark, and might be able to understand what I mean more personally.
Posted by: andy on 11/05/05 at 03:03 PM
Hey everybody! Well, I only have a question for Idina Menzel and Tracie Thoms. Was it ever akward for you two to do a scene where you had to kiss? Did any of you two ever just crack up laughing during the middle of shooting? Thanks. xoxo, ansley
Posted by: Ansley on 11/05/05 at 03:10 PM
tracie-
how did you react when you found out not only were you playing joanne, but you were playing joanne with your original cast members?
Posted by: sara on 11/05/05 at 03:11 PM
OMG I am so ecited to see rent. I saw it last winter at the Netherlander and it was an absolutely amazing show. I can't wait to see all of you in the movie you are all amazing.
Idina how was it singing over the moon live on the movie as opposed to lip syncing it? The song is amazing good luck.
P.S. I saw you in wicked also and you were absolutely amazing there too. Is there going to be wicked movie and would you play Elphaba?
Posted by: Gabriela on 11/05/05 at 03:13 PM
Sorry but I was reading all of these questions and there are some really funny people. I am still laughing right now from some of the comments. anyways, you guys are so great. thanks for everything. CAN'T WAIT! xoxo, ansley
what fruit best describes your character in Rent?
Posted by: anthony bullock on 11/05/05 at 03:28 PM
This is for Tracie: As a RENThead, I would die to meet, let alone act with, the original broadway cast. What was it like to admire these actors for years and then suddenly work with them?
Posted by: Snoopy on 11/05/05 at 03:54 PM
Does it freak you out that you have the fanbase that you do? I know you thank the fans a lot, and we really love when you do that, but does it ever weird you out how much we love you guys and rent so much?
Posted by: Erica on 11/05/05 at 03:59 PM
Did any of you ever see yourselves becoming as effective and successful as you are all now when you were younger?
Idina - You're the most beautiful women out there, my friend and I dressed up as Elphaba and Galinda for Halloween, and we knew that we couldn't even compare to you guys =)
Adam - Your voice has turned me on to a new kind of music that I really never would have listened to otherwise. Thank you for putting so much passion and truth into Roger.
Anthony - You've made Mark so unique and so easy to relate to for all of us who are out here creating, observing but never partaking.
Rosario - I'm very impressed with you as an actress and a singer and I can't wait to see you in the movie =)
Tracie - I have no words to describe how happy I am that you were fortunate enough to be casted. You did amazingly in the soundtrack and I bet it'll be even better in the movie.
Jesse - I love you and your rediculously amazing, loving, soulful voice. Listening to anything you're singing gives me the chills and I love it =) (PSST! We <3 Collins!)
Wilson - You are one of the most amazing actors I have ever, ever had the blessing of listening to and watching, please keep up the amazing work and thank you for blessing us with the Beauty and Love of Angel.
Taye - I love your voice =)
What Actors do you each of you look up to the most?
What inspires you?
If you can play any character already created in a broadway show what who whould it be?
Idina is it true you might play Eva Perón or Fanny Brice? (crosses fingers)
To any of the Rent cast....
Every since I saw Rent, four years ago, I've always wanted to be in the show. My passion is singing, and I know I would be an awesome cast member. How would someone like me, become part of the cast?
Thanks!
Posted by: Kayla T. on 11/05/05 at 04:59 PM
Dear mr. Columbus,
You have had experience filming the first two Harry Potter films and now you have filmed a musical. Any chance that you might acquire the rights to turn Wicked into a movie? I can't think of a better director for the job. PLEASE make wicked into a movie!!
Posted by: Josh on 11/05/05 at 05:03 PM
To Idina and Chris:
Idina - first of all i absolutely love your voice, music, performances, talent, the list could go on forever. you really inspire all types of artists to be who they are and i love that!
Chris - your films are so amazing, i loved the two harry potter films. your vision is always so rich and magical and you really know how to keep the integrity of a story so well.
which brings me to this question:
Will you, Idina, ever consider making Wicked into a movie with Chris as the director?
i think that would truly be the most awesome thing ever, especially since myself along with i know thousands of others were soooo unfortunate as to not see you perform Wicked live. i know that chris would not let the fans down - as i know rent is going to be absolutely incredible just by the trailers alone.
Posted by: Jennifer on 11/05/05 at 05:06 PM
Any question I ever had has already been asked by the many fans here - so, this is just a thank you to you all for bringing to the big screen a musical that has touched my heart. I'm counting down the minutes to November 23rd! Thank you all!
Posted by: Susan on 11/05/05 at 05:09 PM
Idina, Tracie, Wilson, and Jesse,
Was it a challenge to try to understand your characters sexuality, since none of u have same sex lovers? (well that we know of)
Posted by: J on 11/05/05 at 05:13 PM
T O A N Y C A S T/ C R E W M E M B E R--
Were any of you active in the performing arts department in High school, Middle school, or even elemtary?? Note: just so no confusions, this includes if you were in band, chorus, dance, or plays.
If so, name some of your favorite rolls/ musicals you were in during those school years or if you were a dance captain or like 1st chair in jazz band. Thanks for your time!
Posted by: TJ on 11/05/05 at 05:21 PM
Well, let me start off by saying that I can't wait to see this movie. From what I've heard it's going to be amazing. I want to thank Chris for brieng this to fruition. We are all greatful you making sure that the integrity of RENT was kept intact. And we couldn't be happier that you got all of these amazing people in the movie. It's the perfect cast, in my opinion.
This question is for anyone- Do you think Jonathan would be proud of what RENT has become, and how many lives it has changed?Do you think that you are more able to convey Jonathan's vision of RENT in the film than onstge(i.e the riot)?
This one's for Idina- I've got to say that I love you and I think you're just amazing.Your performance in Wicked inspired many people, especially young girls. Do you want them to see RENT? And if so, what do you hope they take away from the movie? Do you ever worry about being typecast after such a memorable role like Elphaba?
This isn't a question, just a comment for Tracie. I think you're an amzing addition to the cast, and you have a beautiful voice. I am definitely a fan of yours <3
Another question for Idina- You have a lot of fans on the West Coast. Any chance of a concert in CA anytime soon? I'd love to see you!
Anthony- I just love you!!! You're a doll.
Those are the only questions I have that haven't been asked already. Much love to the entire cast and crew.
Posted by: Stacey on 11/05/05 at 06:20 PM
I am absolutely ecstatic about RENT the movie, I have seen the play 7 times and still going strong. I was wondering about something I saw on the rent website a few months ago, something about the movie coming out november 11 in L.A., NY and Toronto only? However when I checked the website today, that message was gone:(
So what's the real deal?
Posted by: Kaitlin on 11/05/05 at 07:11 PM
Thank you all so much for making this film. I think you're all amazingly talented, beautiful people. The film looks absolutely beautiful, I listen to the movie soundtrack every day and I can't wait to see it. I'll be taking all my friends with me on the 23rd.
To the OBC: Do you find it surprising that nearly 10 years after the musical opened that RENT is still going strong, is still moving people and that the issues it deals with are still relevant today? If someone told you 10 years ago that there was going to be a film version made and they wanted you to star in it, what would you have said?
To Rosario/Tracie: You two are so talented. We know the OBC has embraced you, but when you were going into the project, were you nervous about joining an already tight-knit cast?
To Chris: First you directed two Harry Potter movies and now the RENT movie. Very brave man. I was just curious to know if when you come up with your vision for film versions of stories that have rabid fanbases, do you just do what you feel is right and hope the fans are satisfied or do you let their wishes influence you in any way?
Posted by: melissa on 11/05/05 at 07:45 PM
How do you (all of you) feel about the difference between the soundtrack of the movie and the OBC recording? There are some definite differences, as I'm absolutely sure you know, but I was wondering howw you like and/or dislike the differences.
Posted by: Anna on 11/05/05 at 08:10 PM
To the actors:
How do you approach your characters? - Many of you being very different from the characters you are playing. Do you use particular acting techniques? Draw from personal experience?
For those of you who were in the OBC, has your approach changed the second time around? Maybe encorporating aspects from the performances of others who have since played the roles?
Posted by: Jenny on 11/05/05 at 08:40 PM
Wilson, would you consider yourself a drag queen because you are playing a drag queen? Or not?
Posted by: Rob on 11/05/05 at 08:41 PM
I had the honor and privledge of viewing a screening of the movie this past week. As a Rent fan who would be a Renthead if I lived anywhere near New York, or anywhere that I could see the play on a regular basis, I had concerns that there would be elements that wouldn't translate from the stage to the screen. I was wrong. The emotion that obsessed me so much with the play as to make it required reading for my Theatre Lit students for the past five years plays beautifully on the screen. The message has broadened for me from one of "a play about how AIDS has impacted relationships in our society" to how we have to work at every relationship in our lives every second of every minute or they die. And that rebuilding those relationships are worth it and will make them even sweeter. I have implored my students to see the movie, not with a group of buddies, especially with people that they love. As a matter of fact, I will be taking a group of my students on opening day.
To the cast and creative team: You have done an incredible job. Thank you for bringing this message to us and sharing your talents.
Posted by: Jodi on 11/05/05 at 08:49 PM
PS...Anthony...you've sure come a long way from doing Humorous Interp and Original Comedy at Joliet West :) I competed against you in '88. My students are so sick of hearing that I beat you at regionals in OC :)
Posted by: Jodi on 11/05/05 at 08:54 PM
Did you have a problem making New York of 2005, and especially the east Village, look and feel like 15 years ago?
Posted by: Byron on 11/05/05 at 09:22 PM
(To all) What is a quote from RENT (aside from "meaure your life in love"), that you personally find to be the truest and most inspirational? Why? Secondly, what are your feelings about the additional song "Love Heals"?
Posted by: Shayla on 11/05/05 at 09:25 PM
I talk about RENT and I become breathless and excited. I see the trailer on TV and I find myself crying and shaking and smiling by the end. I listen to the soundtrack and I'm singing and dancing along. THERE IS A BUZZ; a HUGE buzz for some of us. Do you feel this energy? Are the cast and crew as excited as the fans? Do you feel like you're a part of something as big as this feels to us? Thanks goes to all involved! I'm so excited for this movie, this experience. Much love in the Midwest, katie
Posted by: katie on 11/05/05 at 09:32 PM
I think a lot of the big questions I'd be interested in hearing answers too have already been asked..especially all the ones to do with Jonathon Larson and staying true to his vision.
I do have some though!
To all of you: How much has RENT changed your lives and the course it's taken, particularly the OBC cast as you have had it in your lives for so long?
To the OBC: Did you continue to sing the songs or listen to the music/cd in the time between doing it in the theatre and now with the movie?
To all of you: Which do you prefer- the OBC cast recording or movie soundtrack? And the theatre or film version?
And one last question: Will you please come to Sydney in Australia? That would be really very nice of you all. :P Thanks!
Posted by: kathy on 11/05/05 at 09:49 PM
This is for Rosario:
Lately you've been playing some very risque characters and taking a lot of risks as an actress, how has it affected real life (i.e. do you feel you have a better understanding of women who live extreme lifestyles to get by)?
By the way, Mimi is my dream role and hopefully one day I'll have the honor of playing her. That would be the height of all my acting experiences . . . ^.^
Posted by: Gini on 11/05/05 at 10:09 PM
Thank you guys so much for listening to our thoughts!
For all:
what got you interested in to going into the entertainment buisiness?
Rosario cannot wait for Sin City 2!
To Chris Columbus and the cast
Hi, I'm a Renthead in Japan.
RENT changed my life!
-Did you change your philosophy by RENT?
-If you could play any other role, who would you play?
-If you could meet Jonathan now, what would you say?
I can't wait to see the movie!!
Thanks for reading.
Masami
Posted by: Masami on 11/06/05 at 06:10 AM
For the whole cast:
Whenever I become attached to characters (as I am with the characters of Rent), I like to start thinking of who these characters were BEFORE the show/film begins, so my question is: How do YOU think the characters became who they are in the show/film? I'm really interested in what you have to say about who your characters may have been if they were real people, because, to be perfectly honest, they feel like real people to me and all the other RENTheads in the world.
Posted by: Crystal on 11/06/05 at 06:21 AM
What were some of the bloopers/funny mistakes? WHo was the big pranskter, and who was the biggest diva?
Posted by: pops on 11/06/05 at 06:36 AM
This is a question for the cast and crew:
What's your favourite song from the musical? I know it's really hard to pick!
-Lydia
Posted by: Lydia on 11/06/05 at 06:50 AM
For those of you who participated in the broadway as well as the movie, which one was more fun to make adn participate in?
secondly, the movie is going to be PG-13. does this mean you had to edit a lot of stuff that was in the broadway show?
What do you think Jonathan Larson would say about the movie as compared to the broadway show?
so excited! can't wait till the 23rd!
Ella
Posted by: Ella Fox on 11/06/05 at 07:51 AM
Hi Idina,
I already submitted a question, but I thought of a better one!
I saw you in See What I Wanna See last week, and I was so sad that there was no cast recording to purchase! Are you guys planning on making one? I hope so, because the songs stuck in my head for days after I saw the show, and now I Forget them. :( Sorry that this question wasn't regarding the RENT movie, I just had to know! Thanks,
Samantha*
Posted by: Samantha* on 11/06/05 at 08:28 AM
If you could play any role in any show (whether or not it is currently running on broadway) what role and what show would it be? Also, what is your favorite musical?
Posted by: Margot on 11/06/05 at 08:36 AM
Growing up, which actors/actresses inspired you?
Posted by: Margot on 11/06/05 at 08:40 AM
Were you involved in high school theater in any way? (Not just acting, but sets, lights, costumes, etc.) If you were acting, what roles did you play?
Posted by: Margot on 11/06/05 at 08:41 AM
What's life like after doing RENT? Do you look at things and really wonder abouit them now? And what's your favorite musical ever?
Posted by: Celtic_Queen on 11/06/05 at 09:40 AM
For the OBC:
when you began rehearsing for the movie, did you have to learn all of the music again or did you just have to review it?
Posted by: Kim on 11/06/05 at 09:47 AM
You have a tendency to pick/direct/produce movies that obviously have a large fan following. First Harry Potter, then Fantastic Four, and now RENT. So what is it that drives you to choose these movies that are meant to not only please an unaware public but the fans as well? When you create these movies, do you see them as a challenge or is it that you are that much of a fan?
Posted by: Muse on 11/06/05 at 09:49 AM
To the cast and crew of RENT:
I am a huge RENThead....obviously that's why I'm asking questions, so here they are:
Which song was the most enjoyable to perform and watch during the shooting of RENT, and why?
Which lyric speaks and means the most to you in your life?
What are your highest hopes and goals for the movie?
What scene was the most heartwrenching and tearful for the whole cast?
What was the funniest blopper while filming?
...ok I believe that's enough....hope you answer at least one of these questions and
one more thing: thanks to the cast and crew in advance for making RENT so meaningful and memorable because I know it definitely will be...
Posted by: Danielle on 11/06/05 at 09:54 AM
okay well I am a MASSIVE Rent fan, and I haven't seen the play! (I live on PEI and the closest theatre is in Ontario) I seriously cannot wait until november 23! anyway my question is
When will the Rent movie be released on DVD or VHS?
Nichole
Posted by: Nichole on 11/06/05 at 10:02 AM
I almost (but not quite) got through all of the questions, so if this has already been asked, I'm sorry, please forgive me.
To the cast:
I wanted to know how much you guys are aware of/into the fandom. I mean, obviouslly you guys know it's there, but do you ever check out the communities devoted to you or (god forbid) read the fanfiction? Do you lurk and post things and pretend to be someone else? Do you giggle when someone asks a stupid question about you in a community and gets bombarded with answers?
also, on a side note, when you guys go on tours to promote solo albums and whatnot, you should seriously consider coming to Kentucky. Louisville, Kentucky. Please.
Posted by: margo on 11/06/05 at 10:17 AM
For the OBC members (sorry Tracie and Rosario! You guys are amazing though!): How has your character changed from almost 10 years ago on the stage to 10 years later on the big screen? Did you find out more about your characters, did you lose something?
I LITERALLY CANNOT WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER 23!!! AHHH!! 17 DAYS!!
Posted by: Chris on 11/06/05 at 10:22 AM
What special training did each of you need, if any?
Posted by: Lindsay N.P. on 11/06/05 at 10:32 AM
ok, im a huge broadway fan and i love all of you. i distinctally (sp?) remember hearing about there being of a film version of Phantom of the Opera, and being disappointed b/c i felt like it could never live up to the magic it had on stage. RENT is such an amazingly powerful show when done live.....where you guys hesitant to try to put that into a movie, when so many movie-musicals before you failed? i mean, after seeing trailers and things, i have full confidence in the movie, but how did you initially react to the idea?
Posted by: liz on 11/06/05 at 10:33 AM
Anthony, I know you said that you only eat really healthy food, but there has to be something you have a weakness for! Deep fried lard (kidding), those big white candy bars that Dave Chappelle eats at the beginning of Half Baked...something!
Posted by: Amanda on 11/06/05 at 10:35 AM
Hmm. Let's see....
1. For all of you original Broadway cast members, what do you miss most about the stage production that isn't present in the film?
2. I'm not entirely sure if anyone but Jonathon Larson knows the answer to this question, but at the end of You'll See (in the OBCR version), when Collins says, "I like boys...." and Angel goes, "Boys like me!" does he mean 'I am pleasing to boys' or 'boys such as me'? My friends and I have tried translating the line from international versions of the show, and we've gotten both answers. Kind of obscure, yeah, but it's one of my favorites lines from the show, and I've always wondered.... :)
3. For the cast - was there any particular scene that was easier to bring to life without the limitations of the stage, or anything that just seemed to immediately lend itself to the film medium?
4. And again for the cast, if you could swap roles with anyone, who would it be and why?
You guys are doing an amazing job, and I'm counting down until I can finally see the movie. Thanks so much for everything. :)
Which actor is most like the character they depict in real life? Is anyone the complete opposite of who they played?
I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ALL!!!
Posted by: Alyssa on 11/06/05 at 11:20 AM
To Chris and the cast:
How did you go about putting the songs in the movie? Do the characters just bust into song randomly or is there a way of putting the song in? How do you make it seem natural for a person to start singing?
Posted by: Rachel on 11/06/05 at 11:37 AM
First of all, thank you to the original cast of Rent for being so influential to me. Rent debuted when I was all of 16, and the power and grace of the story and music have been ripping my heart out ever since. I remember sitting the front row of my french lit class in high school comparing every line of every novel to one of the themes in Rent!!
Now, as an opera singer, I really love the way that Jonathan Larsen made opera cool!!
I suppose my question is just like what a lot of other people have wondered: What was it like to revisit your characters so long after creating them?
Obviously your interpretations will have changed or matured, but is there a sense of "coming come" when you step back into the roles?
For Rosario and Tracie: Good luck!! I can't wait to see what you have done with the amazing material you've been given! I'm sure you'll be fantastic!!
Posted by: kat on 11/06/05 at 11:47 AM
This is for the whole cast--Did it feel any different playing the roles in the movie then in the stage version and which do you prefer, playing your character on stage or in film?
I freak out everytime that commerical comes on TV, I'm so excited for this movie you have no idea thank you all so much for making this happen! I love you all and Idina you are awesome!
much love <3
This one is for the cast,
on the soundtrack there are some major difference, but there are also some very subtle ones. How hard was it to switich things like the a few notes in a song? Were you messing up and singing it the way it was sung on broadway?
Posted by: dan on 11/06/05 at 01:10 PM
Hi there,
Live in the United Kingdom. Any idea why Rent won't be screening here until mid-February? Thanks for answering (or maybe you already have from a previous questioner). Steve
Posted by: Steve Smith on 11/06/05 at 01:27 PM
For the whole cast:
Would you ever consider going back to broadway and playing your roles in RENT once more? Or if you had never played a role in RENT on broadway, would it be something you'd consider doing for the first time?
Thank you
Jennifer
Posted by: Jennifer on 11/06/05 at 01:44 PM
I have one question for Idina and one for Wilson.
Idina: Did you take anything you learned from RENT all those years ago and adapt them to your role as Elphaba? Did you take anything you learned as Elphaba and adapt it to your reprise of Maureen in the movie?
Wilson: I am amazed that you can hit all those high notes. Does it come naturally to you or did you train specially for the role of Angel to be able to hit those super high notes?
I would love to hear from both of you!
Since the stage version of Rent takes place on only one set was it hard to recreate a world outside of the apartment that you dont see in the stage version?
Posted by: Rachel on 11/06/05 at 03:21 PM
hey,
I CANNOT WAIT UTIL THE MOVIE OPENS!!! This is a question to Anthony: I was wondering since I know that your character is from Scarsdale [I am too!] if you-yourself have ever visited Scarsdale to see what it was like or for character study or anything like that? If so, what did you think?
Question for the Original Cast:
If you had not been cast in the movie would you still have at any point have watched it once it was released, or would you be too afraid of what would have happened to it in the process of translating it to the screen?
- No Day/Future Producer
Posted by: NoDay on 11/06/05 at 04:48 PM
Hello cast and Mr. Columbus!
My question is to the cast is, because the characters in this story are younger, what was it like to go back to being that age now that you are older (for the original cast member's cases) and for Tracie and Rosario, what was it like going back to playing someone of that age?
And for the director...
What was it about the story of rent made you want to choose to do this project?
Thanks so much!
Posted by: Jillian on 11/06/05 at 05:01 PM
To the men of this cast,
Do like it when people tell you they think you're hot, or is it, by this point, just annoying? I always wonder about that.
Thanks for your answers. Rock on.
Posted by: pinkseacow on 11/06/05 at 05:03 PM
If you could have played a different character, who would it have been?
Posted by: Trish on 11/06/05 at 05:10 PM
Hey everyone,
I have a couple of questions for the whole cast.
-How do each of you get into your character not just after 10 years but I mean before the camera begins to film?
-What was it like seeing Rent finished and on the screen what was the experience like the first time you saw it?
-What are hoping the audience's reaction will be?
-Are you nervous to see how people like it and the reveiws?
These ones are for Idina.
-What is it like to be a role model for so many aspiring actresses? (like me, you inspired me to be an actress)
-Does it ever get agrivating when people compare your preformance with Rent and Wicked?
You are all amazing
HI,
My name is Maddie and I wen tot the Broadway show of RENT when I was in preschool and I am now in 7th grade and I am teling even though I was 3 that was the BEST experience of my life. I went in Boston with my mom and I remember her picking me up from preschoo and telling me she had bought a new c.d and it was the sountrack of RENT and by thhe end of that night I had memorized all hte words to the at least the first 10 songs and for my birthday because it was aroud that time my mom took me into Bostn adn her and I had gone to the play and after the first song had been played I got up in the middle of the asiel and I started singing and dancing to all the songs and I was soo happy because the cast members had always gave me a little wink or waved now ad then and they would smile at me because I was in like the 4th row from the stage so everybody could see me.and at the VERY end of the show the whole cast put there arms out to me nad the BIG sptlight shined on me and I was only three I was sooo Happy I wouldn't stop bragging baout it!!! I thank all you guys thatwas the best day of my ife. Me and my mom were ong to go see a movie sometime in the summer and saw the trailer for the mive and we both and chills running up and down our spines!! We were so happy that a play that was soo WONDERFUL had a movie nad come back to life!!! I am so proud of every single one of you guys for making the RENT come back to life that play had and has changed my life in no way I am EVER going to forget!! YOU guysa ll ROCK and you are so talented and I give my blessings to you guys THANK YOU agin. I really hope you remember me Thanx Maddie
This show has changed my life in more than one way. It made my family accpet me as being gay ect ect. its just. amazing to me that its finally going to be on the Big Screen.
My question is
Is it really opening up in LA/NY/TORONTO. on
November 11?
Posted by: Logan on 11/06/05 at 05:38 PM
Does anyone prefer film to the stage and visa versa? If so why?
Posted by: Kia on 11/06/05 at 05:40 PM
Hi Cast,
Can't wait for the movie! My question...
Any chance of a RENT tour? Not of the show but just of you guys performing the songs?
Posted by: Tanner on 11/06/05 at 05:42 PM
There are many conceivable differences between the audience of Rent when the show first hit Broadway, and the audience that the movie hopes to appeal to now. Has this been a concern? Would anything be different if the movie did not have to attract nationwide interest?
Thanks,
Rennie
I love the ringtones from the soundtrack that are available for my cellphone...I BOUGHT ALL 8 OF THEM! But I was wondering...how come only 8 are available? Are you gonna give us more of them or is this it forever? You guys could be making a ton of money off these ringtones, ha! Especially if you make songs such as these ones available....Glory, Santa Fe, La Vie Boheme and Take Me For What I Am. Are you guys gonna give us more selections or is this it?
Posted by: Jenna on 11/06/05 at 06:28 PM
To Chris Columbus-
I love all the movies that you have done. I hope one day to be a successful film director such as yourself. Was this movie hard one to direct compared to your others?
Idina- Do you respond to any of the fan mail you recieve at the public Theatre?
Good Luck to you all!
Posted by: ashley on 11/06/05 at 06:31 PM
Hey Cast and Crew! Just a quick question for the lot of you and one for Idina
EVERYONE: When everyone was making the movie did you sometimes just feel...unbelievaly connected to Jonathan Larson? I mean...in some parts could you just feel he was there watching or something?
IDINA: Did you have any second thoughts about going into the Movie world with sucg a huge step? I mean, you're a theater girl and did you have any thoughts of what your avid theater followers would think of you leaping to the big screen, even if it is a musical movie? I know you say you'll all ways stay in theater, but it's sort of a question I've been pondering.
Love from North Dakota,
Lizzie
Posted by: Lizzie on 11/06/05 at 06:31 PM
First off I love you all. You are amazing.
But my question:
Do you guys hang out any outside of Rent publicity stuff? Are you all really close friends even when you're not working? Do you go see eachother's movies and plays?
I love you Idina!
Posted by: Sarah on 11/06/05 at 06:32 PM
HEY THERE RENT CAST!!!!
I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET TO THIS QUESTION CAUSE OF ALL OF THE OTHER ONES THAT SO MANY OTHERS HAVE POSTED AND IF ANY OR ALL OF THE CAST AND MR. COLUMBUS ARE READING THESE THEN YOU ARE SO TOTALLY GREAT!!!
ANYWAYS, HERES MY QUESTION FOR THE CAST AND MR. COLUMBUS. WHICH SCENE OF RENT WAS MOST PIVOTAL TO YOU AND MOVED YOU THE MOST?
CANT WAIT TILL THE MOVIE!!!! YOU ALL ROCK!!!
Posted by: Sammy on 11/06/05 at 06:59 PM
Tracie!
I have a question......
Do you think you'll ever make a CD?
Because you know I would be first in line to buy it!
You have such a beautiful voice! So if you make a CD....it'd be the highlight of my life! :D
Did you think, when you were creating your roles and participating in the workshop with Jonathan, that RENT would have as big of an impact it has? Why do you think there are so many people from very different places, who have felt a such connection to this show?
Posted by: Leah on 11/06/05 at 07:48 PM
From what I can gather, the music has become a little more..."radio-friendly" for the movie, whereas in the Broadway version, the harmonies just about swallow you whole. How do you feel about the changes that have been made to the arrangement?
Posted by: Jonna on 11/06/05 at 08:00 PM
This is for both the cast and Chris. Was there one particular scene that you all felt was the hardest to shoot because of the emotions that came from it?
Posted by: Amber on 11/06/05 at 08:06 PM
To the cast-
Does acting on camera allow you to explore your characters in ways that you cannot onstage?
Also, a few thoughts:
Thank you to the original cast for reprising the roles that so many of us have come to love. I don't think I need to say (but I will anyway) how tremendous you all are.
And to Rosario Dawson and Tracie Thoms- I won't be the only one to say that both of you are absolutely electric on the movie soundtrack. Thanks for being fearless! Rosario, hearing you sing as Mimi is like hearing Rent for the first time again.
Posted by: Rennie on 11/06/05 at 08:18 PM
I'm a lifetime New Yorker and have always enjoyed Broadway and had the pleasure of seeing Rent. I'm looking forward to the film but wonder if it's filmed in my beautiful, exciting city or a manufactured studio in Hollywood?
Posted by: Debbie on 11/06/05 at 08:29 PM
G'day ;-)
I heard through the grapevine that RENT wasn't going to be released in Australia untill
March next year...is this true?? If so can you pleassssseee release it sooner - my friends and I are all dying in anticipation of seeing it!
ooHH QUESTION : Can the cast please come to oz for the premiere????
Sending some southern hemmisphere loving!!!
So about this advanced screening...tickets? for me? you shouldn't have...
anyway i have just heard the cd...AMAZING!
i read somewhere that the movie had an earlier release date in LA and NY is this true? i am about an 3 hours from LA but would not hesitate to make the drive to see it two weeks early...
this cast rocks my face, i only wish i was old enough to have experienced the original cast on broadway.
Posted by: Ashley Whitehurst on 11/06/05 at 09:05 PM
This is to the Whole Cast and Crew,
This is a two part question.
If RENT were never written where do you think you would be right now in your life. Also, if Jonathan were alive now, do you feel the movie would be different in any way?
Posted by: Marcus on 11/06/05 at 09:26 PM
My question:
If you had to be recast in "Rent," who would you want to be?
Posted by: Decha on 11/06/05 at 09:51 PM
holy cow... so many questions. i feel kind of guilty asking all of these, but i simply must know.
will any of the movie blogs be included in the extras on the dvd?
will there be any west coast promotions/tours/events? (especially san luis obispo... but anywhere in CA, i'll find a way to get there.)
adam, do you play your own guitar in the movie, or is that added in later?
how did the decision come about to change roger's plaid pants?
to the larson family:i just want to thank you for existing.
all cast:did you do any shows in high school?
is there any chance of you guys all doing another movie together?
do any of you sponsor children in other countries?
why oh why did you drop the nov 11 release in LA?
why was it changed from christmas eve to christmas day?
i asked this one before, but is there any hope of seeing you all on "inside the actor's studio"?
thank you thank you thank you for loving us enough to have this blog.
another obsessive fan, christy
Posted by: christy on 11/06/05 at 09:57 PM
Idina- After doing your first movie musical does it make you want to play Elphaba in a film version?
Have you and Chris ever talked about the idea of making Wicked into a film with you and Kristin?
Seeing other Elphaba's after seeing you twice, i must say nobody else really captures the innocent side of Elphaba needed in act one like you do and the change into act two.
Posted by: J on 11/06/05 at 10:46 PM
Did Michael Greif work or assist on any of this movie version? I can't imagine keeping it true to Larson without the original director who brought it to the stage with him.
Posted by: kim on 11/06/05 at 11:13 PM
Hello!
Many RENT-heads, like myself, are concerned about the stage-to-screen changes. I was just wondering how decisions were made regarding the final script. Was the cast involved?
*hugs and kisses and plenty of moooooos*
Posted by: shastina on 11/06/05 at 11:56 PM
First, I just wanted to say how much of an amazing job you guys are doing and how blessed I feel to be so involved with the experience thanks to all of you. My question is: what advice do you all give an aspiring entertainer who wants to start on Broadway, then make movies and cd's? Can you give expertise on any shady business you all had to watch out for, or were maybe trapped by? Thanks for all the info and buena suerte to all of you!!
Posted by: Edlyn on 11/07/05 at 03:05 AM
BTW: Just a sidenote, Wilson, my sister has believed you were a beautiful girl with gorgeous hair in the commercials and ads for the past two months until she finally asked. Now that she's seen you in drag, she thinks you're a handsome man. Also, I'm singing Seasons of Love Thursday at school. I just hope I can pully half as well as you guys. My final question is: if you each could make one wish on how this movie and show will change the world what would it be?
Posted by: Edlyn on 11/07/05 at 03:26 AM
To the cast or RENT:
-What was your initial reaction when you heard that a movie was going to be made out of RENT?
-What was your favoire scene to shoot on camera as compared to onstage?
-What was the hardest scene to shoot (not necessarily logistically but maybe emotionally)
-I just wanted to say thank you to you guys. I am so excited about this movie and I know a lot of other people are too and I just wanted to say thanks for keeping us so up-to-date and everything. You are all so nice and have such wonderful talent!
God bless,
Elizabeth H.
Posted by: Elizabeth on 11/07/05 at 04:42 AM
I just want thank you for taking the time to answer our questions and for talking to us. You guys are wonderful!
I know this has been asked, but it would be cool to hear about any bloopers or really amazing experiences (cuz everything about rent is amazing).
btw, if the studio puts all the bloopers, videos or blogs or everything they didnt put in the movie on to the extras part of the DVD that would be awesome! = )
Posted by: Marian on 11/07/05 at 05:15 AM
RENT cast and crew:
As much as anything, this musical focuses on different aspects of couples in relationships. I know it's been mentioned a few times that the movie features more of Maureen/Joanne and Angel/Collins. Do you feel that some of those more elusive qualities that didn't quite fit in the play have been made apparent on the big screen?
Posted by: Tiffany P on 11/07/05 at 05:33 AM
I think you should put a recording of the Broadway play on the DVD when it comes out. That would be awesome! I've seen the play, and I wish I had a recording of it, and it would be great for all the people who've never seen the play but are going to see the movie.
Posted by: Carly on 11/07/05 at 05:44 AM
Adam,
What was it like having scenes with Mackenzie who played April? Did this really help you identify more with the role of Roger having a tangible backstory? Did it color your choices differently when working with Rosario? Did it make Rogers'story more real to you to shoot the history of the character? Was it easier as an actor to work with Rogers' pain?
Cindy
Question for Tracie.
Will you marry me? And Idina...If you don't want to give her up...You can come too!
Posted by: Thomas on 11/07/05 at 07:28 AM
A question for the cast:
It is well-known that only when an actor is completely comfortable in their character can they begin to create relationships and bonds with the other characters - was it difficult to integrate with seven other people AND create your own three-dimensional character? How did you go about doing so? On-screen it is difficult to hide strained relationships and awkwardness - in no way am I implying that there is any dispute between the cast; but I was wondering whether it was difficult to perform in your own character as well as reaching out to seven other people and supporting their characters.
Posted by: Fleur on 11/07/05 at 07:29 AM
To The Cast,
I want to first off thank you for giving a new generation of people and people that would not normally go to broadway to see such an exciting and entertaining view of how people are today. This will be an important movie for generations to come because of the message and how this movie effects people in this century. Just once again thank you for bringing such a compelling story to life in a larger than life experience. My Question for the cast and Crew:
Do you think that besides the generations that have seen this production in the past will take their children to see this or do you think that this movie will impact the world as did the Off-Broadway production has and will continue to do?
This question is meant for Idina, though anyone can feel free to answser:
When I saw the stage version, practically the whole audience was mooing with Maureen. I would imagine this probably happens at most every live performance of the show. However, given the difference between live theatre and cinema, would you want and/or expect the audience to moo along at the end of "Over the Moon"?
Posted by: Charles on 11/07/05 at 08:15 AM
Is there any chance that you will be promoting the movie in NH? Also, is anything special going to happen the day that it is released (ex. cast being at the movie theaters)? Just wondering.... Idina, you are great!
Hey everyone!
I was wondering what everyone thought about the fact that in 2005 with out changing any material this film, that deals with many controversial issues, received a PG-13 rating. What do you guys think that says about the change in society from 1996 to 2005?
Also I just wanted to say thank you to the cast and crew for being so dedicated to this project and thank you to mr. columbus for believing in this movie and these people!!
A QUESTION FOR CHRIS COLUMBUS
Chris, what are you most happy about from doing RENT?
Posted by: Gabriel on 11/07/05 at 11:43 AM
This is for Adam...
I was just wondering if before you got involved with RENT (the show) if you ever had any vocal or theater training? Like were you in a school choir or anything or did you just have your band? If so when did you start singing?
Posted by: Nikki on 11/07/05 at 12:10 PM
This is for Idina...
If RENT hits it big and does extremely well, do you think they will turn WICKED into a movie as well and would you want to reprise your role as everyone's favorite wicked witch?
Posted by: Amanda on 11/07/05 at 12:54 PM
West coast screening or premiere? Can we be blessed by such a concept? I think to have those in attendance, who truly understand the story and meaning of RENT, who appreciate not only the talents of Mr. Columbus, but the Larson Family and OBC(plus Rosario and Tracie). TO be know and show that JOnathan's story still and will touch hearts and souls decades pass the Nederlander IN NYC, from coast to coast, ...will Cover us All.... Where can we get info about the West coast premiere please?
Posted by: LARentChick on 11/07/05 at 01:00 PM
Hey everyone!!!! I just wanted to say how much this musical has changed my life. I'm a Broadway freak and "Rent" is one of my favorite shows. The first time I sat a listened to the OBC Soundtrack, I was bawling the whole time. The intense emotion and love that was put into this show is so moving and inspiring. The best thing about it is that EVERYONE can relate. I have a few questions.
Taye: How does it feel to watch your wife kissing another person, more specifically a woman?
Tracie: You've been a major rent head forever, and you were blessed with the opportunity to play your dream role. What kind of advice can you give the fellow RentHeads who are aspiring to play our dream roles in the show?
Idina: I love you so much. I think that you are such an amazingly talented person and you have add so much vibrance and varity to every character you play. You've done several projects with your husband, Taye Diggs (Rent, Wicked, The Wild Party). What different experience do you two get to share that others might not? Is it awkward shooting love scenes with other people while your husband is in the room? Maureen is my favorite character in the show, but there is something I don't understand about her. If she supposedly is so in love with Joanne, why does she act the way she does with Mark? She calls him when her equipment breaks down when she knows that it's going to make Joanne upset and she even kisses him in front of Joanne. What is up with that? Any help you can give me to better understand her character would be greatly appricated. (I'm asking for future refernce. I am an aspiring Broadway and theatre actress. If I ever get the chance to play Maureen, this would help me play the character better.)
Chris Columbus: Is it very nerve racking to know that, especially as the opening of the movie apporaches, you have some VERY big shoes to fill? I have most of you work and I know that you are a very talented director. I have complete faith that you will live up to expectations. I just want to know how you feel.
To anyone from the OBC and Mr. Colombus: What are the new things you've gotten to do with your roles on film that you were not able to do on stage? Were you able to make your characters more versatile? What are the pros and cons to film as opposed to the stage?
To Tracie and Rosario: Thank you both so much for capturing the essence of Joanne and Mimi. Rosario, you really surprised me. I did not think that you could sing at all; you did so well on the soundtrack. You've both added your own touches to the soundtrack but Mimi and Joanne are certainly there. Congratulations!!
Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to ask these questions. I CAN NOT wait for the movie to be released. I want to thank you all for be a part of this movie. Thank you for producing this movie. Many fans are not able to make it to New York or the tours for whatever the reason, and this gives them the opportunity to see it for $9. I'm sure Jonathon is smiling down on you from Heaven...
Posted by: Stephanie on 11/07/05 at 01:07 PM
What was it like to sing together as a group after such a long time apart? Everyone sounds wonderful together. Do you think that RENT has brought the theater to more people that may not have been that interested before? RENT was my first theater experience, and I loved it so much that now I try to see as many different types of plays and musicals as I can. How do you think these movies, such as Chicago and RENT, have changed the theater audience? I have been waiting for the movie for a long time, and I can't wait to see it next week. Thank you for taking the time to answer questions. We all appreciate it.
Posted by: Theresa on 11/07/05 at 01:32 PM
For the cast – coming into this project which song did you look forward to singing the most?
Posted by: Alexandra on 11/07/05 at 02:00 PM
Hey Everyone!
First, I just want to thank you all a thousand times for recreating your amazing roles in this beautiful musical. We all know the power of RENT-it's love, friendship, and of course the theme of "no day but today." It's so exciting to spread this story to a larger audience and thank you all for letting me be a part of it through your updates. It means everything to me.
But anyway, I have a few questions for y'all.
- I heard that Halloween and The Goodbye love Fight are not going to be in the movie (at least in music form)..is this true? If so, is it because it didnt fit well or something along those lines?
- Have you all seen the finished product? What do you think of it? Is it how you envisioned it?
- What are your favorite moments in the movie?
- Do any of you plan to return to broadway any time soon?
- Sony and Revolution Studios are doing an incredible job promoting RENT and getting the word out there. I have more chances than ever to explain it to people when they see the trailers.It's great! Is it exciting to promote the film? Is there any news on upcoming promotions? Any chance you'll sing One song Glory, Adam?
-Was it difficult to film the songs, with the recorded music having to match up with your lip synching etc?
-and one last comment.. I love how some parts of the film are seen through Mark's camera. I think that's a great technique.
Well, I can't wait! It's so close! Thank you SO SO MUCH for everything.
all my love and support
For the original cast; when you first heard that RENT was to become a movie were you at any point reluctant and did you believe RENT should remain be a stage production? Or were excited and eager to join the cast from the start?
Posted by: Diana on 11/07/05 at 02:06 PM
Cast,
Are any of you planning on new solo records for the future? I have checked out Adam's and Idina's..and I absolutely love them. I hope to see more!
Posted by: Amy Kooiman on 11/07/05 at 02:17 PM
To Chris Columbus: Did you have any reservations about your ability to tell this story through film?
To Anthony Rapp: Will you marry me? Just kiding =8->. As the only cast member who's been a part of Rent from New York Theatre Workshop to the movie, do you feel you have a deeper understanding of the story and content?
To Adam Pascal: Do you feel you've grown as actor between playing Roger on Broadway and portraying him in the film?
To Tracie Thoms: Being relatively new to movies and such, do you feel you've learned a lot from working on Rent? P.S. I adore you! *hugs*
To Rosario Dawson: How different was filming a musical from filming a normal movie?
To Wilson Heredia: Did you ever take dance classes? Because you're such a great dancer! And in heels!
To Jesse L. Martin: Which do you prefer: movies or TV? (I love you on Law & Order!)
To Taye Diggs: Do you see Benny as a 'yupie scum' or do you think there's some part of his psyche that really wants to be a bohemian artist and dance on tables?
To Idina Menzel: Why did you mock Anthony's adorable spastic 'To going against the grain' hands? (oh yes, I noticed after watching the clip about a million times) Kidding =8->. Do you like film or theatre more? P.S. Good luck on See What I Wanna See, were I in New York, I'd go see it!
Mucho love and happiness to all,
Bethy
Hi! First When will the movie come out in Germany???? Second, are you playing it in the orginial language english or will you translate it into German? The German version is not as good as the english one, or will there be a new translation? The German translation sounds pretty bad and I love the english one.
Hi Cast/Crew
This is for Chris:
Did you see RENT before you became the director of this movie, and if so did your feelings change about RENT since then?
Posted by: Dillon Hughes on 11/07/05 at 02:51 PM
To all of you-if you were not playing the character that you are, is there another person in RENT that you would have liked to portray instead?
Posted by: Lisa on 11/07/05 at 03:00 PM
to everyone.. will you be reading the reviews for this movie? how will affect you if you do read it?
Posted by: me on 11/07/05 at 03:05 PM
This is great!! Thanks, I have alot of questions.
Chris, there were rumours flying around when there was first talk of the film that you wanted to involve gay marriage in it, even though it wasn't an issue in the staged version. Some people liked the idea, others hated it..well, I guess my question is was this true, and did you end up putting the issue of gay marriage in the film?
Tracie, you said that Maureen and Joanne's relationship is different and more complete in the film(WOO HOO!!)...how so?
Adam, you said that you played Rodger differently this time because now you understand him as an actor more than just a vocalist, and I'm sure everyone will agree that you can hear the difference in the soundtrack(great job on "One Song Glory", by the way). How do you think people will portray your deeper version of the already deep Rodger?
Anthony, Mark's character can be taken in so many directions and has been played so many different ways. Has seeing others perform as Mark affected the way you played him in the film compared to how you played him as the original?
Idina, you have a Tony under your belt now!! How does it feel to come back and play this character with obviously alot more experience than you had years before, and also with another character in your blood that has just as many crazy(yet different) emotions as Maureen?
Thanks guys!! I hope something is answered, lol!
Posted by: Amara Offhaus on 11/07/05 at 03:56 PM
Taye,
how do you feel about your wife kissing Tracie? tsk tsk!
Posted by: Danni on 11/07/05 at 04:30 PM
This is for Idina.
Were you nervous at all for your scene in La Vie Boheme when you had to...you know...in front of everyone? Or did it just bring you back to nine years ago when you had to do that every day? How do you feel about having that on film?
Posted by: Virginia on 11/07/05 at 04:40 PM
Wow! This is an honnor to be able to ask you guys a question. So Idina this is for you! I know you have had numerous amounts of work, but which one has had the most number of fans? Oh and Idina I will love you no matter what you do!
Posted by: Caila on 11/07/05 at 04:42 PM
hey all! Another crazy renthead here. I'm so excited for the movie and I love this blog and the way you all keep in contact! Thanks soo much! My question is for Anthony Rapp, Mark, the part I hope to play one day! I wanted to ask this when I met you but just slipped my mind. How does it feel to be apart of the "whole process" NYTW, to broadway, and now the film? You've gotten to grow alot with this character and I think it would be interesting to share.
Thanks for everything!
To the original cast members:
As a large chunk of the original cast, how did actually knowing Jonathan Larson enhance your movie performance?
Posted by: Christina on 11/07/05 at 05:38 PM
To the director and cast of The Rent Movie-My son Martin looked so forward to seeing your movie that he counted down the weeks. He was a Renthead for the last 6 years. He died 3 months ago at age 19 from a epilepsy condition. His family and friends will see the movie in his memory. His dream was to become a broadway actor and director someday as he was studing drama in college before he died. Thank you Camille
To the cast members:
In all of your years of acting, singing, and performing both on stage and in the movies, what is the most important life lesson you think you've learned throughout all of it?
Posted by: Jes on 11/07/05 at 06:36 PM
how does rent define your generation?
Posted by: Sharisse on 11/07/05 at 06:39 PM
Anthony, what's up with that chain you're always wearing? You're wearing it in most pictures I've seen of you.
Considering this film takes place when AIDS was a continual front page story....What, if any impact do you think or hope this film will have on the current AIDS pandemic?
Posted by: Paul on 11/07/05 at 07:22 PM
I thought of another question I would like to ask, since my original one seems to have been duplicated by others.
What would you say is the most important message that the audience should get from your character?
Posted by: Decha on 11/07/05 at 07:36 PM
when u read this script back when u were doing the stage version did u think it would be what it has become .. and change the lives of so many ... so many people i know come up to me and say Tiffany i get why you love it so much i saw the preview and cried ... you have touched so many people with jsut the preview can u even imagine the way the movie will touch the world
Posted by: Tiffany Monde on 11/07/05 at 08:08 PM
My 17 year old who is a true Rent head says the movie is premiering in NYC this coming Friday, November 11. I see no indicaton of this and need to know in order to make the trip from New Hampshire to do so. I have sort of gotten sucked in to the whole Rent thing myself!
So, if you can give me the heads up on the where and when of Rent premier and whether we can even get tickets, it would be most appreciated.
Posted by: nancy on 11/07/05 at 08:20 PM
To the original Broadway cast members: There has been a lot of talk over the years of bringing RENT to the big screen, and a lot of different directors and actors have reportedly been attached to this project at one time or another (i.e Spike Lee, Justin Timberlake, etc). What were your feelings and/or fears when you first heard talk of RENT being made into a film?
Posted by: Kim on 11/07/05 at 08:27 PM
First of all KUDOS to you all who are reading these commments...I'm what 496?? I'll understand if you give up after the first one hundred or so but seriously I have a question that has been bugging me for sooooo long.
What is a key grip? Seriously its a game to wait till the end of the credits to see who the lead key grip is, or the fourth key grip. Except nobody has any idea what this position entails.
I love your music, I love the way the 8 of you dance, sing, and look, I'm a huge fan of the show and uber excited for it to come out in theatres but there is absolutely no new question to ask you all that the 495 people above me have not already asked. Unless we want to go James Lipton style...haha lets not ruin the fun of when you'll be there for yourselves and get to find yourself in the glory of telling all the impressionable students your favorite curse word.
Posted by: Megan Elizabeth on 11/07/05 at 09:52 PM
Not film-related, but I'd love to know, Adam, what you're up to -- if you've got any plans to be back on stage any time soon? I know a lot of us miss seeing you perform your music. :-)
A friend of mine had some trouble posting her questions; they kept getting denied, for some reason. So, I post these on her behalf in hopes that they work:
Anthony, as the cast member who has been with Rent the longest, from it's first workshop in '94 to this definite film version, what would you say has been the most rewarding moment of being part of Rent?
Adam, you have grown so much as an actor since you first appeared in Rent (and even from when I first saw you in Aida back in 2001). What do you think has been the greatest acting lesson you've learned in the last 9 years?
Idina, through Rent and Wicked you have become a role model to so many young people. If you could leave them with 1 ?pearl of wisdom?, what would you say to them?
Tracie, you are living proof that dreams do come true. From Renthead to RentSTAR, what has been the most important lesson you have learned from Rent?
Posted by: Deborah on 11/08/05 at 09:30 AM
How can the movie be set in 1989, but have a lyric that references a film made in 1991 (Thelma & Louise)?
Posted by: Todd on 11/08/05 at 09:43 AM
Haha, when are you going to cut us off? This is like my 4th or 5th comment. Ah well...
Rosario, when was the first time you saw Rent on stage? What did you think? Did you ever think about playing Mimi on stage before the movie came around?
Also, I heard something about someone being and uber neat freak on set, who was it?
Posted by: Amanda on 11/08/05 at 11:18 AM
Adam! They're closing CBGB's! Is your inner Roger weeping? And, are there any bands out there right now that you like?
Posted by: Ben on 11/08/05 at 11:21 AM
Tracie and Rosario - Congrats! It must've been daunting, but if the soundtrack and clips are any indication, you've done Jonathan proud.
Idina - XO - Saw your concert tour this summer in both Ptown and Cambridge. You ROCK!
Anthony - you single? :-)
Good luck guys, we're all so proud of you!
Okay- a question for Wilson, or possibly Chris:
In La Vie Boheme B, during Angel's "Music" solo, why did the the two words "feeling" and "power" get switched? A random mistake? A conscious choice? I'm dying to know!!!
Posted by: Elaine on 11/08/05 at 01:42 PM
Will there be an actuall movie by mark on the dvd?
Posted by: Jennifer Schlosser on 11/08/05 at 01:44 PM
I just wanted to say that I had an amazing time on the set with you all. As a stand-in I can confirm that you all.. including Wilson in his high heels gave a 110% on every take. I would have liked to be in New York for the priemer, but then again so does everyone else. Are any of you gonna be in the Bay Area for the San Francisco one?
Posted by: Duane R on 11/08/05 at 03:14 PM
As you can see Rent has made a tremendous and everlasting impact on each of our lives, what or who has made the same impact on each of your lives???? And, thank you, thank you, thank you....
Posted by: Laura on 11/08/05 at 03:36 PM
so many people have been posting the same things...how has rent changed your life...well, i have a very different question...where did the song "love heals" come from? i listened to it and i can't even imagine where it fits in the show...because it doesn't. i love rent, don't get me wrong, and i'll probably see it about 525,600 times, but where did that come from? i have never read about it anywhere...did jonathan larson write it?
Posted by: Val on 11/08/05 at 04:18 PM
OK questions, questions...
1) When did you first realize that RENT was something that really touched and moved people? How did that make you feel? (shocked, proud, etc)
2) Does it feel strange that you're making RENT into a movie without some scenes (Happy New Year etc) and newly added scenes? (the riot)
3) What was the most memorable moment you all had while you were filming?
Posted by: Jasmine on 11/08/05 at 04:32 PM
Since the movie is like a 10 year anniversary celebration . would u guys make another movie on its 20th anniversay ? LOL! to any original cast member do u remenber gettin ready to go on stage opening night in 1996 ? did u ever think 9 years later you guys would be making a movie out of it ? does the show bring back memories? if soo what? Love to all !!!!!!!1
Posted by: Candy on 11/08/05 at 05:28 PM
This will be about the fourth or fifth time I've watched the video trailer "RENT", and each time I'm totally blown away! The message rings very clear, even in San Francisco -- we have to measure our lives with love every single minute of our lives. Of course, it's something easily taken for granted and easily forgotten in the world we live in today, but I hope that this movie and the prior musical continue to renew that message in our hearts and minds each day before we become "dust in the wind."
WHo make the most mistakes, or got silly and had to do a million takes?
What are all of you up to next?
we do pay rent... we do need RENT.
CHRIS. HOW DIFFICUTL IS TO DIRECT PEOPLE THAT COME FROM MUSICAL THEATER?
Was it hard to work with actors that have already played the same characters they were casted for, because they sure had ideas and previous solutions, but you have yours also, so how did you worked that out? Their previous ideas and visions and yours as director.
(sorry for my english... hope you can do something with my question, in case is goes to the director...)
Posted by: Jorge on 11/08/05 at 07:11 PM
Ok, i have a question for any of the cast who want to answer me. What is the best thing about either being back with the cast of rent, or joining on for the first time, and what was/is your favorite scene to schoot, director included.
Thanks guys, i love you all, and i have a countdown going. Can't wait, and good luck with the opening.
For Chris Columbus:
Now that RENT is done, what will be your next project? IMDb has a list going. I would like to mention that when the time comes for SUB-MARINER please don't forget that a lot of the movie SPHERE was filmed in water tanks on Mare Island in Vallejo. And while I'm sorry to report the tanks were only temporary & no longer exist, Mare Island does tell me that the space - Building #599 - is currently available. Just a suggestion.
Will there be a director's commentary on the RENT DVD? I loved the one you did for MRS. DOUBTFIRE & I was REALLY sad there weren't any on the HARRY POTTER films.
Did you feel like you were in good hands while you were making this film? Did you feel like Jonathan Larson was watching over you? I know it was a little rocky just before filming started, but did things settle down after production got under way?
Will we see you at the RENT/Project Open Hand fundraiser on the 20th? My ticket arrived last weekend. Thank you for making the tickets affordable!! I'm so excited. It will just be a movie day. The plan is to go see HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE in IMAX first.
And lastly, do you ever get a chance to read any of your fan mail?
All the best,
Sandy
Posted by: Sandy on 11/08/05 at 09:05 PM
I intend to bring my family and friends along to seen RENT and I am elated that it has made it out to the cine for more people to experience. So thank you- all of you- for that.
I had just one simple question.
For those who have not yet been active in theatre- has this movie inspired you to do more stage acting? And to the others that are connoisseurs of stage acting - will you continue to pursue movie roles?
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul
For Tracie (and sorry if they've already been asked; I don't have the patience to read through all of the other questions!)
As a RENThead, did you find it intimidating at all to work alongside most of the OBC? Did you/do you feel like there are certain expectation that you had to live up to, not from fans, but from the cast?
Posted by: Rachel on 11/09/05 at 05:58 AM
Idina! I LOVE YOU and all that you do! Will you please come to California soon ? Also what is your favorite RENT song?
Posted by: Caila on 11/09/05 at 07:05 AM
This is mainly for Anthony, as he seems to be the most net savvy cast member...
Anthony, I assume you know what fan fiction is. What's your position on people writing it about the play/movie? And more specifically, what do you think about people who write Mark/Roger fic?
I know it's been forever since I last visited this blog, but I still visit it now and again - but one thing hasn't changed: I am still so excited for this movie! I get teary eyed watching the trailers/promo stuff on TV! That sounds pathetic, I know, but I know this will be an exceptional film I will be seeing again and again and again...
But my question is for all the 8 cast members - out of all the roles you've played, both on stage, screen, etc. - which one role stands out for you in defining your career? Of course, your roles in "Rent" truly are up there, but take a moment and think beyond and/or behind the show.
For example, for the lovely Idina: I love your role as Elphaba in "Wicked" or the lovely Taye in "How Stella Got Her Groove Back", which I saw in the theatres with my stepmom and sister! And Anthony, who I always laughed at in "Adventures In Babysitting". (And yes, Chris Columbus, you can answer as well - which films you've directed stand out for you?)
I hope these questions makes some sense - and hope to hear from you soon! Thanks so much! Only 2 weeks to go... la vie boheme!
I have seen several questions but no answers - is RENT opening on Nov. 11 or not in NYC?
Posted by: Travis on 11/09/05 at 05:39 PM
For the Tracie and Rosario:
Now that you've done the movie, would you do the Broadway show? (or is the movie enough?)
And For the Cast:
Is anyone releasing a CD anytime soon, weather it is with a group or solo?
Posted by: Caitlin on 11/09/05 at 06:05 PM
To the Director:
Hi! I'm a high school senior and I want to major in film and television I have 2 questions for you. [1st] - I read that you went to NYU. What experience helped you the most when you come up with movie ideas and what direction to take them, you classes at NYU or your experiences in New York City? [2nd] - Besides NYU, what other colleges do you recommend for a future Televison or Film Director/Producer?
Thanks alot!!
NOVEMBER 23rd - it seems like it's 525,600 minutes way!
Posted by: Caitlin on 11/09/05 at 06:30 PM
I wanted to ask the cast (but particularly Jesse/Collins) what they have in common with their character? And what they most admire about their character? Anxiously awaiting the day RENT is due!
Hi there! My name is Kalen and my question if for Chris Columbus, or anyone who can answer. I wanted to know if there was going to be an LA premiere of the Movie as well. I know the one in NYC, but I was wondering if LA was schedualed for a premiere. Thanks alot!
I've just seen the interview over at Broadway.com with Anthony, Wilson and Tracie. I was surprised to find that it was hard to get hold of Wilson at the very start of the process because I assumed you(the OBC) had all stayed in contact since performing in the theatres. You all seemed so close!
So...
Did any of you stay in contact with each other?
Will you from now on since you've been reunited?
Posted by: kathy on 11/09/05 at 09:28 PM
I saw that the movie received a PG-13 rating. Does that mean the original songs/dialogue are heavily edited?
A question about the title "RENT" - For everyone, the wonderful Cast and Director:
What in your opinion, is the significance attatched to this awesome-awseome musical's title - "RENT"?
Aside from the fact that Mark and Roger were broken their promise by Benny that they wouldn't have to pay the rent, that love, according to Angel and Collins can't be bought but can be "rented", and as Mark and Roger sing out that emotion isn't owned, it passes on to each person and moves on its own time ("i don't own emotion, i rent!") and it can't be helped in the sense that you can't choose for it to come and neither can you force it away, what else does the musical's title - "RENT" signify/embody in the message, relationships, and events that take place? Oh, and why do you think Jonathan Larson (God bless his soul) chose to give it that title? I've always been curious about this =)
i've already posted a barrage of questions, but i have one more:
JESSE: since you've worked in all three mediums (tv, stage, and movie), how do you compare them? which is your favorite? what are the strange quirks of each one?
Posted by: Christy on 11/10/05 at 01:31 AM
Is there any way that we could get the character's backstories on the DVD? I know there were detailed biographies, and I'm sure that we'd all love to read them and be introduced to our favorites a little more!
Posted by: Rachel on 11/10/05 at 05:57 AM
Hey Idina, i just thought of two questions:
First of all, do you think that the two characters Elphaba and Maureen have anything in common. If so, is there any way that your performance as Elphaba has influenced Maureen?
Secondly, after singing Over the Moon about a million times, what is your reaction when you drink diet coke, or hear someone say "Holy cow!", or if you drive past a farm, (not like there's many of those in New York City), and see cows. In General, do you like cows? There i said it.
Your friend (who doesn't feel like typing the rest of my long signiture that i usually do when i write on the blog),
Christen.
PS: I have nothing more to write for once. Could this be the end of my lame, but amusing comments? Unfortunatly for mankind, probably not. lol.
