Anthony Rapp Answers Your Questions - Part 2
I can only speak for myself, but when I said I would never go back to the show without the rest of the OBC, I was talking specifically about not going back to doing the show eight times a week on Broadway. I bear no ill will towards anyone who's performing in the show now, and I'm glad Rent is still running after all these years, but it would be very surreal to immerse myself back into it without all my other OBC friends there. Even moreso now that we've done the movie. When I was presented with the opportunity to meet with Chris about doing the film version, I was thrilled to have that chance, but never dreamed that it would turn out that I -- let alone six out of the eight original principals -- would all get to do it again. The only way I would have said no to that was if I felt the film version was going to be some sort of bastardization of what we had done before. Within two minutes of talking with Chris, I knew that I had nothing to worry about. So of course I said yes when I got the offer. That phone call of hearing about the offer was one of the greatest phone calls I've ever received. When you get into character, how do you go about getting inside of Mark's head? - SuperScott It's sort of second nature at this point, after all these years, but in my process I just try to let the material and the character tell me what and who they are, if that makes any sense. In the case of Mark, I embraced his mixture of isolation and desire to be a part of his friends' lives, his passion for his work, his somewhat naive self-righteousness, his difficulty processing grief, his desire to live a fulfilled life, his joy in his friends' love lives and despair over his own loneliness, his sense of humor, his commitment to leave something important behind. There's a lot there to play with, that's for sure. Then it's just a matter of being open in the moment and holding that camera or jumping on that table or tossing out that garbage can full of fire or dancing that tango. It's all a blast. What's your favorite song in the whole show? And except for RENT, what is your favorite musical? - Lauren I think the most powerful song in the show is the reprise of "I'll Cover You." It destroys me. I love the way the different melodies and refrains all weave together, and I think it's a perfect expression of loss and grief and love and joy all at once. My favorite musical besides Rent is Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I love rock and roll, and I love theatre, and it's an incredible example of what's possible when you combine the best of both worlds. It's hilarious, moving, thrilling, dark, and incredibly imaginative. And amazing to perform -- I had the privilege of doing it a couple of years ago. One of the highlights of my life. How much do you yourself relate with the character of Mark? - Stephanie I relate quite a bit, but in many ways, over the years, I think I've grown up a lot more than Mark. This is something I address in my book, but to touch on it here, one of the most significant aspects Mark and I share is being a witness to others' illness and death. At the time I was in the show on Broadway, my mom was in her last months of a losing battle with cancer, so Mark and I were very linked in what we were experiencing. And back then I had a bit more trouble dealing with the difficulties of that situation than I think I would now. I'm not saying it would ever be easy -- far from it -- but I'm not as afraid now of the depth of emotions that great loss like the death of a loved one engender. I think where Mark is in his life at the time of Rent, he's still very reluctant to let himself experience his grief. But I relate to his desire to do important work in his life, his passion for his friends, his commitment to integrity. Stuff like that. I have tremendous respect and empathy for him. Are you planning on coming back to the Broadway stage anytime soon? - Melissa I certainly hope so. I've been working on a couple of developmental readings of new musicals, but it might be a while before one of them emerges on Broadway. There are few things in life I enjoy more than living in New York and going to the theatre every night to do a show. Hopefully I'll get that opportunity again sooner rather than later. Got any offers? :-P Have you been surprised at all of the recognition and awards RENT has achieved? - Alicen Back in the day, I was initially a bit surprised at the widespread, mainstream acceptance and celebration of Rent. After all, it's a piece that deals with themes and issues and characters that are not themselves part of the mainstream of American life. But I do believe that there's no denying the power and truth and heart at the core of Jonathan's words and music, so in another light it's not surprising at all. He was very committed to opening people's eyes and hearts and minds to the stories and lives of a community on the fringes of society, and I think he succeeded beautifully in doing just that. If you really think about it, it's rare that a musical takes on such large ideas and themes as Rent. It's not to say there's not room for shows that are just attempting to be a fun night at the theatre or a spoof of something or just tell a simpler story. But Rent has been said by many people to have changed their lives -- it has certainly changed mine in more ways than I can say -- and that's no small thing. I'm hopeful that the film will have an even greater opportunity to make an impact. It seems to me that our world, now more than ever, could use some of what is talked and sung about in Rent. Dear Anthony, has anything like this ever happened in the history of movie marketing? A true community of fans and actors coming together to celebrate a mutual love for the work and each other? After 9+ years, the phenomenon of "Rent" continues to inspire and YOU have been a best friend to fans every step of the way! You have exceeded our expectations for staying connected "in an isolating age." Bravo Anthony! - Michael I'm not sure if it's been done before. I think this might be a bit of a first. But it's because we all believe so strongly in what we've done with this film and want to do everything we can to communicate our enthusiasm for it. Maybe we are that much more interested in reaching out to fans because having come from doing the show in New York, we got to meet and talk to so many fans over the years. There's a tradition of reaching out that goes back a lot of years. It's a total thrill to hear from all of you. We're all beyond excited about seeing what this film does in the world once it's out there for all to witness. You are the definitive Mark and Charlie Brown for me. Do you think there are any similarities between the two characters?- Neil Thanks for your compliment. I think they are both somewhat on the outside looking in, but I think Charlie, for all of his sadsack nature, actually has a little bit more of a thicker skin than Mark. No matter how many times Lucy jerks that football away from him, he always gives her another chance. Foolish of him, maybe, but he never gives up entirely. I think Mark has a little more cynicism in him. But they both believe in fairness and all that. I don't think you'll ever hear Mark saying, "Good grief." I'm going to school to hopefully one day be on Broadway, do you have any advice? Also, I hope to try out for Mark one day. Do you have any advice for that? What was the audition like? - Mike My biggest advice is to continue to get lots and lots of training. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and call you to be bigger than you can see yourself being. Tell the truth in your work, don't worry about being perfect. Pour your heart and soul into every moment. Love what you get the privilege to do, if you get the opportunity to do it. My initial audition was great, but I made mistakes in it and still got the part. So perfection is not the goal. :-) I write about it in a lot more detail in my book. Does the shirt with the star on it have any significance? I've seen pictures of you wearing the red one over the years (backstage at YAGMCB) and then there's the gray one you wore for the Open House photo shoot. - Rebecca No particular significance. It's just a shirt I like. How much do you think the character of Mark was taken out of Jonathan's personality? - Stephanie Quite a bit. He bore witness to his friends' deaths and attempted to create a work of art that would honor their memory. He devoted himself to his work, sometimes to the point of not connecting as deeply to his own issues. He had an unusually deep belief in justice and integrity. And from hanging out with Jonathan, there was a certain youthful glee he had in his work that I also tried to bring to aspects of Mark. But I also believe that there's a bit of Jonathan in all the characters. Anyway, thanks everyone for your support and questions. Keep spreading the word. It's a pleasure sharing this experience with all of you. Anthony |

Anthony has a great taste in musicals. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is one of my favorite musicals as well. It's definately one of the most amazing musicals I've ever seen. That, obviously RENT, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Thank you for that, Anthony. This film would not be 1/4 of what it will be if you were not part of it. I am so thankful for everyone sharing information and answering questions! You guys are awesome!
I cannot wait for the book!!! Take care! You are one inspiring person :)

Anthony,
I have said this so many times before, but it's definitely worth mentioning again. We, the fans, have been in such anticipation since we found out this film was in the works, so knowing that it was going to be months until we could actually see it was just torture for us. However, you have made the wait so much easier by continuing to be our constant connection to the whole process. I think we all love, respect, and appreciate you for that! Thanks again.

Reading what you wrote made me cry. I want more than anything to meet you. You seem like such an amazing person. You are definately the one character in RENT who is just drop dead true to the show. You are amazingly passionate about your work and i can't tell you how much that inspires me. I am extremely into broadway...your one comment about very little making you happy other than living in new york doing shows is the story of my life. I hope to be heading out there next september to make my attempt...i hope to meet you sometime in this life time you are a huge inspiration to me. Thanks for taking the time to respond to your fans...it means the world to us.
Much love,

Thanks for your wonderful answers to our questions. I appreciate how well you know your character. It's obvious that you've spent a lot of time thinking about what makes Mark tick. You have made Mark what he is today! Thank you so much.

Anthony--
Thank you so much for making such an effort to strengthen the connections between the creators and the audience (er, not quite the terms I'm looking for but it's the best I can think of at the moment). I love how dedicated you are to this project, to Rent as a whole, and to us--the fans who religiously check a website every Monday and Wednesday just because we care so much... and probably because we need better hobbies. (Really, the day the eight Today show blogs were posted = "Christmas came early.")
We appreciate what you do beyond words, and seeing that you take such time and care to answer our questions leads me to respect even more as an actor and as a person. It's wonderful to feel that the respect is mutual. If I can drop my tone for a moment and just gush like the fangirl that I secretly am, we seriously love you. You're great--the entire Rent team is. Thank you again for giving us so much. I hope these few words on a comments page on a Monday afternoon can give something back.

P.S.
Please oh please release some more of your music. Release anything, we'll gladly take it. There's an audience for all sorts of things...

Anthony--
Thank YOU for taking the time to actually answer the questions we have sent to you. RENT has changed my life for the better. I, unfortunately, found the musical during a difficult time in my life...my mother had just lost her battle with cancer. It inspired me to carry on and to look into Theater. (And on a more personal note "Will I?" actually stopped me from doing something extremely dangerous at one point.) So thank you, and all the OBC...and all of the touring and broadway casts and everyone for doing the movie. It means more to us fans than you'll ever know.
To steal a line from all the Idina fans:
"Because I knew you, I have been changed for good."

Anthony,
Thank you so much for your honesty through the entire blog.
I'm a bit sad that your book isn't on the market until Feburary...too late for Christmas, too early for my birthday! Whatever shall I do? XD
(and I'm a bit curious: will you be doing book signings if it's a seller (bad word, I know, but I can't think of anything better right now)? if so, I beg of you to come to Chicago. I'd love to hear you talk about it! :D)
And singing, acting, writing! Is there anything you can't do? <3 :D
I must restate this fact: I adore your original music. I'm fairly sure my roommates think I'm off the deep end.
Well, thank you again times 10! Looking forward to Thanksgiving like whoa.

Anthony,
I know it's been said before, but I just wanted to reiterate the fact that this blog -- and especially the enthusiasm of you and the rest of the OBC -- has done wonders to alleviate the fear that RENTheads felt. I have friends who are huge Chicago fans who hated the movie, and the same for Phantom, which made me somewhat uneasy about my favorite musical being cinemized... yet, all of you make the whole process bearable and I can absolutely not wait until November. The trailers are amazing, and everything they should be... whereas you are beyond amazing, and far surpass how closely an audience expects its cast to be. We all really appreciate this, and especially you, Anthony. You don't even know how you have helped the movie seem not-as-scary as RENTheads feared. I'm eagerly awaiting seeing you finally in the role which I love so much.
Thanks again!

Hi Anthony,
It's was really cool to hear your insights into Mark and the whole show in general. I really do hope to see you on stage again soon, it's great that you have so much fun doing what you do.
I was just wondering. What do you and the other cast members think of the pg-13 rating? What would Jonathan think?

Anthony,
Oh... I can hardly find words to describe how much you amaze me... But I suppose I shall try.
Everytime I listen to Rent, everytime I have one of the songs blaring out of my stereo, I think... ''I want to be a part of that. I want to be in this show.'' How, though? A 14-year-old girl, living in Hicksville? Sometimes I think I'll never get out of this Hellhole the U.S.A likes to call Tennessee.
But hearing you sing... Listening to all the heart you put into the character of Mark... inspires me to try my best to get out of here, to pursue my dreams of being a Broadway legend! Strange enough, underneath my mask of ''I wanna play Maureen!'', there is a certain hint of ''I WISH, I WISH, I WISH, I could play Mark...'' inside of me. Do you find that strange at all? Out off all the interesting FEMALE characters on Broadway, I tell myself that I would LOVE to play Mark? The character of Mark amazes me to no end. There's so much depth to him... The way he acts, the things he says in the musical; the way he reacts to everything that happens to him...
And, Anthony, YOU brought life to his character. YOU made his character unforgettable. You're amazing abilities with Jonathon Larson's beautiful work...? The most wonderful combination musical theatre has seen... in my opinion, at least.
Sometimes, it's hard me to sing along with such songs as ''Halloween'' or ''What You Own''... Because, the song starts... And I hear your voice... And I'm captivated, completely. You have that effect on me.
So, that's me... A 14-year-old gal who loves ya to death, wants to play Mark (Haha... Everyone I know thinks that is so weird, that I would LOOOVE beyond anything else to play Mark!), and thinks you are the coolest thing on this Earth since sliced bread.
I know you prolly see comments or whatever similar to mine a lot... And I don't even know if you will read my comment... But just the idea of letting you know how you have inspired me is worth submiting this.
Continue amaze and inspire.
Love always,
Sarah

Hey Anthony!
Thanks for taking the time to awnser those questions it means a lot to us. Anyways I have a fun question for you, Have you ever had a large incident on stage where you had to do a lot of improving to help the scene make sense?

Anthony,
You have touched so many people from all over the world with your enthusiasm and passion for this amazing story. It is such a wonderful tribute to Jonathan to now have the ability to touch even more through the movie. Thankyou so very much. You bring more joy than you could know.
Love always, Erin xox
P.S. I know I have asked before, but is it on the cards to come to Australia?? RENT has such a huge following here and we are longing to see you all!!

Okay, if I wasn't 16 and you weren't 33, I'd ask you to marry me. You're making this such an amazing experience...and the movie isn't even out yet. I second Sammy's comment, you are a dream come true for a fan. When I get to Broadway, I'm going to be just as generous to my fans as you are.
You are the best part of his whole thing. I adore the original cast, Tracie has won me over quickly (adore her) and so has Rosario, but you've been there since the NYTW. Since "For Someone Cool, You're A Fool", "He Says" (I wish it was still in the show. Love it.) and when Mark was talking about being "Lonely, bored and" uh...fill in the blank. I don't want this to not get posted.
I can't wait for your book, I love how you write. *grins* I already convinced my teacher to let me do a report on it. *grins* the joys of my heroes writing books. (Yours gets to go on the shelf next to Wil Wheaton's book! Trust me, it's cool to be there)
(P.S. I saw Hedwig and The Angry Inch...just...you looked and sounded amazing...yummy. *is no longer coherent*)

Anthony,
Thank you for taking the time to answer questions like that. We really appreciate it. I admire you so much and would give anything to meet you, even just once, even for just a second...to just be in your pressence and absorbe your positive engergy. You are obviously such a caring, loving person, and in my opinion, the heart and soul of RENT. Many fans think so, and even you castmates have said so.
I can't wait until the movie is released and I can see the finished product, as it's sure to be likely the most amazing movie I've ever seen. The story itself make it that alone, then combined with you and everyone else...most of the OBC, which is amazing that was able to happen...form the trailers alone it is spectacular and I can't wait to the whole finihsed product.
You never fail to bring a smile to my face and every word you wrote here was an inspiration...anything you write or say. I have already preordered your book and can not wait for it's release in February.
I look forward to you and the rest of the cast doing more promoting for RENT when it gets closer to it's release, and hope to see you on talk shows and whatnot. And, maybe I'll see you at the RENT 10-year Reunion in April...if I can save up for the entire trip to NYC and ticket to the show!
Thanks again...just for being the fabulousness that is you :-D

Anthony-
It's been said thousands of times before (literally) but I feel the need to say it once more. I (and the rest of the RENTheads probably) are so grateful and appreciative of your (and the rest of the cast's) responsiveness to us, the fans. It sounds cheesy but it always makes my day to come home and read these and its always a treat for us slightly crazy/obsessed RENTaholics. :-P I know you can't post at BWW anymore so it's always fun to have a re-visit to these Q and A sessions. Thanks again and good luck with your future plans. :-)

Anthony thank you so much for all that you're doing for the fans... bridging the gap between production and fan, showing a true love for audience and project alike!
I have a question for the cast...
I've seen Idina asking herself weather she has lost touch with maureen, is the same true for others? 10 years later... The music clips sound great, but different. Worried about longtime-diehard fan reactions?
And one more question...
In the hiatus between stage and film, did you ever sing your character songs in the shower? I know if i were you anthony I would just belt out what you own, or adam one song glory, Jesse and Wilson I'll cover you, Idina OTM, Taye You'll see? I know I do :-)
Thanks again for your ongoing love and support!
Can't wait for the 23rd! (I'm skipping school for rent!:)

Anthony... to this day, I still have never been able to see a performance of RENT... However, I've been in love with the music and characters and story for years... I just wanted to thank you for your part in it all. The movie will probably be my first full glimpse at this world, and I can't wait to see it!

You're a good man, Anthony Rapp. You made my day by answering my question about Charlie Brown and Mark. And I look forward to getting the cast album tomorrow. It's very interesting to read your thoughts on what makes Mark tick and its made me think of him in a new light.
I look forward to seeing more of Mark's relationship with Maureen, which I've heard is in the movie. Tango Maureen aside, I could never fully picture what Mark and Maureen's relationship was like before it soured even as roommates.
How much of the backstory was worked out in rehearsal and how many gaps were filled in for the movie?
Looking forward to your book. And thanks again for reaching out to us fans.

Anthony, you just made my whole night. I've been so crazy busy with my kids, school (mine and theirs), and work, it has become hard to check the board with any regularity. I came on tonight and got to see that wonderful, eloquent, gracious, humble and fun Anthony/Mark guy and you really made me smile. Thanks so much for caring and keeping in touch, it helps this wait we are all stuck in go much smoother.
Lots of love,

Anthony,
I love you! It is as pure and simple as that. I think it is amazing how you, and the rest of the cast are so great about responding to our questions and actually talking to us! I wish I had the chance to see the show back in the day with the OBC, but I know the movie will be the balm to my soul. (hey, I'm an actress...let me be a little melodramatic). Anyhoo, I was watching Dazed and Confused the other day and I was floored...I had no clue you were in that movie. Just one more reason behind your list of theater characters that touch my heart to think you are wonderful! *sigh*

Dear Anthony & the AMAZING Rent Cast:
Wow, where to start. First of all, thank you ALL so much for the hard work you’ve put into this movie (and the show in general, and updating this site)- We RENTheads owe so much to you. I haven’t posted any comments yet because I wasn’t really sure what to say, but after listening to the new movie soundtrack I just couldn’t stay silent anymore.
Anthony- I was about halfway through your first verse in “Rent” and I started crying. I’m really not sure why, and it sounds kinda obsessive, but I just felt like I had been hoping and wishing for this soundtrack to be amazing, and here it was- more perfect than words could describe. You guys have done it once again, and to the Newbies- you guys blended right in and sound AMAZING!!! I love how the soundtrack is still Rent, still has all the same great melodies and messages as the OBC recording, but it feels so new! Everyone sounds the same, yet different somehow, but still the characters we love. Adam- I don’t know what it is, but you sound really different than in anything I’ve ever heard you sing… Still amazing (you are so awesomely talented, I can’t even describe it), but Roger seems… edgier? I don’t even know, but I love it, and I can’t wait to see how you, and everyone else, portray these characters on screen.
My favorites sound so great, and then when I got to “Love Heals” I couldn’t believe how well it fit in. You guys were made to sing together, and that song is so beautiful and touching, it reminds me of the first time I heard “Seasons of Love”, and all the feelings that it evoked.
All in all I just wanted to say thanks, and congrats, you guys still rock, still roll, and still Rent. If you’ve read this whole entry then… Wow, you really are devoted :P.
-Abby-
P.S. I’ve only had it for a couple of hours, but I think my roommate will break my CD if I play “What You Own” or “One Song Glory” one more time- and she’s a fan too.
Posted by: Abby on 09/27/05 at 06:42 AM
Anthony i would just like to tell you that i admire your work. You are amazing! Every time i listen to my RENT cd or look through my "new" RENT book i get chills. You and the rest of the cast have created a beautiful work of art that will live on for centuries to come. I cant wait for the movie! =)

Mark (or any the Rent cast)
First of all, like everyone on here I've been a rent fan for a very long time. Back in 97 I was introduced to it when a friend of mine was called back to read for the role of Mark, along with Chris O'donnell, only to lose out to Neil Patrick Harris. It's an amazingly inspiring show, as if I even need to convince anyone.
Anyway, someone asked you what advice you have for someone wanting to pursue a broadway dream. Your response was great, I particularly was drawn to the line about surrounding yourself with people who tell you that you are better than you actually believe yourself to be. That is my situation. I wont bore you with the story, but bottom line...I know I have talent, being classically trained, and having played many leading roles in local theatres (community theatre, but with professional quality). However, there are thousands of talented people out there and with more experience than myself. All I've got, besides the encouragement from family, is the promise from one of my friends, who recently played Ching Ho on Broadway that I've got what it takes.
My question to you...is how did you decide that the reward was worth the risk?

Anthony -
I just returned from a glorious weekend in NY. One of my biggest thrills was briefly speaking to you after you finished up at the celebrity table at the BCEFA flea market. I was stumbling over my words to you, but you kindly took the time to talk with me and other the other fans that were so delighted to see you. Cheers to you for all you've done for BC. My whole family are giant Rentheads and Charlie Brown heads! You're an outstanding performer. Thanks for everything!!

Anthony, I'd just like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. I've only seen you live twice, but you are one of my all time favorite performers. I can't wait to see the movie or to read your book. Keep up the good work!
Posted by: Krissy on 09/27/05 at 09:40 AM
I got really excited, when i heard that RENT was being made into a movie. I'm just a little confused why. I've never seen the Broadway play, but something tells me that I've seen it. I just don't know how. Somehow, I think I've seen it on video, or T.V. Is that possible? For some reason, I feel a connection to the play. Maybe it's just being a "fan" of musicals, in general. There's a bonus as it's opening near my birthday. Well, I think, since I live in Toronto that it hits here the same time as New York and Los Angeles. Yippie!!!
I just want to say, after going around this site that RENT totally rocks!! Anthony is amazing in all that he does here. I'm sure I'll fall in love with the movie and the entire cast.
p.s. I love Hedwig too.

Anthony thanxx for the q&a'z i enjoyed reading for perspective. I just listened to the new soundtrack and i have some questions. Why was "Seasons of love" put at the beginning? Why was "Contact" and "Happy New Year" i think you did a wonderful job on it though! I love "What You Own" and "Take Me Or Leave Me" they were my favorite of the new soundtrack. Tracey and Rosario are wonderful! I just wondered about those two questions thanxx!

All I can say is.
YAY RENT. Its coming so soon. I'm counting down the seconds until I get to see you on the big screen! :)

I have some yes or no questions. How much do you think the movie differs from the show? Are there more spoken lines than the show? Has anything significant been added to the movie that wasn't in the show?
...And thats it. I love you guys, I'm really excited about the movie! I've been singing RENT all day everyday. :)-Nanii

Check this out! This morning, I went to J&R Music World to get the movie soundtrack, but they didn't have them out on display yet. So I rode up to Tower Records. When they didn't have the "Limited Edition" Mark cover downstairs, I went up to the soundtrack area to look for one. As I stood by the R's looking in vain for RENT, I heard someone walk up behind me, apparently looking, too. I looked back and--I swear this is true--it was none other than Mark, himself...Anthony Rapp! Talk about surreal...I was looking for the CD and I found the real thing! He was, of course, very nice and amazingly young looking, as if time stopped for him in '96.
Anthony--it you are reading this, please tell me that I didn't have any helmet schmutz on my forehead!

Being in Rent must be such a great experiance, but is it your favorite role you've ever played. Being Seymor in "Little Shop of Horrors" must have been a lot of fun! In this past year, I was lucy in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and every time I heard my friend [the one playing Charlie Brown] sing The Kite song I thought of you. I hope the theatre I perform at does Rent. That would be completely exciting! I'm born to be Maureen. ;-) Hope the movie's as great as the stage performance!

That's a lot of good advice to think about. I think many people will value it. Can't wait to see your book. =)
By the way, any idea when Rent might be released worldwide? I live on the other side of the world.

Hey Anthony, Thanks so much for all the updates and the blog. I just cannot get over how you and the rest of the cast are so amazing to us. I cannot wait to hear the new soundtrack. I pre-ordered it online at Amazon.com, so I kind of have to wait a few extra days. I guess the OBC Soundtrack will have to keep me satisfied til then.

You have, once again, made my day. Or night, as it were...
Rent is definitely amazing. I don't think it's changed my life--not on the surface, anyway--but it's certainly changed my perception of it. I find I have an easier time dealing with everything after laying back to "Your Eyes" or singing along to "La Vie Boheme." Unfortunately, I have yet to see the show, so I'm really glad you guys are going to the big screen with it. It won't be the same, but it'll be better than nothing.
Thank you all for doing all this for us!

Anthony,
I just want to thank you for answering my question (I'm going to school to hopefully one day be on Broadway, do you have any advice? Also, I hope to try out for Mark one day. Do you have any advice for that? What was the audition like? - Mike). The part about not being perfect and just doing it helps me out a lot. I always seem to do everything perfect in my room when I'm alone and then when I go for an audition I think I'm so afriad of messing up that I hold back a little bit. And I'm deffinitly going to read your book for info on the audition. THANKS AGAIN!
P.S. Thanks for the audigraph and for being so nice at Bryant Park! :0)

Anthony, thank you so incredibly much for putting everything and more into Rent, Jonathan's messages, and reaching out to us receivers...I know so many people who've been inspired by you for so many different things (including me!!) and you're just amazing. And you're super crazy awesome, which is my highest compliment to anyone.
I love love love reading your answers...so nice and long and wonderful and Anthony-ish!! I love hearing about the cast's insight into the characters they play, and the ways you've described Mark...ahh loved that. I checked the blog during school and this totally made my day. ROCK ON!!

P.S. When I pre-ordered the RENT CD online, I bought your's and Adam's CD also and I'm dying to hear them (what I've heard in clips so far I reallllly like)....=D

Hey, I was just wondering if there was any chance of the cast being on "Inside the Actor's Studio", or if you guys would even be interested in that. They have almost strictly movie actors, rarely Broadway... so maybe now that it's a movie they'd be more likely? Thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us poor "watchers" your insights and thoughts. It is truly appreciated. I am impressed by you and your cast mates, always. Highlights are of course, just that, highlights... so I must be clear when I admit the HIGHEST light of my theatre experiences was seeing you and the most of the OBC in London. The energy and love affected every person in that audience. Amazing, thanks so much.

I just bought the new movie soundtrack. Seeing that in the store was like Christmas coming early! I have done nothing at work this afternoon but listen to the new version. I am such a huge Broadway/RENT fan. This will make the wait til 11/23 a little easier. Thanks to the cast for keeping us all in the loop on this project. As Chris Columbus said, "thank you Jonathan Larson!!"

Hi Anthony!!!!
Omigosh, what to say...I totally love you and you are the best Mark ever!!!!!!!! You really define his character in my eyes, and helped make the show as beautiful as it is. ^_^ Mark is my fav. Bohemian of all time, and I'm totally being either him or Mimi for Halloween, lol. I heard from a friend that the original cast was coming back, like, on tour or something for a short time and I really hope it's true! I would come and see RENT on Broadway...if my evil Mum would let me! >< And I really wanted to see you and Adam Pascal on the Today Show..but, being an idiot, i missed it! That makes me soooo sad! Oh, I wanted to ask if you've ever seen CATS the musical? (that's my fav. musical of all time, and I reeeeally wanna be in it...) or Les Miserables, or Miss Saigon, or Jesus Christ Superstar, or Little Shop of Horrors, or Phantom of The Opera? (I could go on like that for quite a while, because I'm in love with so many musicals, but I'll spare you, lol. :p.) RENT is probably my favourite musical besides CATS...but yeah. Oh, and I tried to send a fan email to you-I found this site where there was a 'Contact Anthony' thing-but i don't think it worked. I wanted to send you this picture I drew of you if I could...not as Mark but just as yourself. I also heard you're doing a book which I am SO getting. *swoons at idea of a book by/about Anthony Rapp* But, anyways, I'm taking up too much space! Sorry! Well, love ya, see ya, can't wait for the movie! ^_^

Anthony,
I think that you are such an amazingly talented person. Your voice fills my head all the time. When I'm going to sleep, when I'm walking to classes, or when I'm trying to do my homework. I love that fact that I've listened to the soundtrack so many times that I can literally turn the cd on and off in my head any time I want to. You (and the rest of the OBC) have impacted my life so much and I thank you for that. I can't even tell you how excited I am for the movie to come out. I know you guys have maintained the integrity of the show and all of your fans, including me, appreciate it. Thanks for keeping in touch with all of us and giving us a little insight into what has been going on with the movie.

Just when I think you can't get any better, you pour your heart out to us. Thank you so much for taking time to answer these questions. You probably get tired of hearing it. I also just want to share that I agree about the most powerful song. I was listening to the movie soundtrack (yay!) today, and I just sobbed. "I'll Cover You Reprise" totally touches at a lot of feelings that I don't always pay attention to. I also think that the talents performing it have a little something to do with that emotion.
Thanks again, and I look forward to the big screen debut!

I love all this stuff you say about Mark. He's my favourite of all of them. <3 And you did a BRILLIANT job, just so you know. :D <3
I just found out just yesterday that it won't come to cinemas in Norway. I was devastated, because I'd been looking forward to going to see it a billion times, and bringing all my friends; many of them wanted to see it too, but I haven't told them yet it won't come.... When I found out, I seriously cried for ages, while being comforted by my best online friend and fellow RENT-head (who actually lives in Canada, so will get it before the rest of the world)... I'd been scouting for any Norwegian mention of it for months, but seen none, but I still had my hopes up........

I never got the chance to say it when I saw you in Hedwig at Theaterworks in Hartford, CT...but fantastic performance. The music, and the spectacle of Hedwig herself is quite an inspiring character. Inspiring to rock and roll that is. Id love to see you re-live that role. I cant see anyone else doing it better.

Anthony,
I am so impressed with the way you communicate with the fans and your involvement and commitment to them. Thank you so much for keeping us informed, taking the time to answer our questions and read our comments. Also, thank you from me for recognizing the crew of the movie. As an aspiring Stage Manager, crew member myself, it means a lot to be respected by the cast. My only question is this: Do you have a favorite memory from the time you were in Rent, either on stage, during filming, or both? Once again, thank you so much. You are truly inspiring.

Thanks for all the updates and info, Anthony!
I had the pleasure of seeing you in Little Shop of Horrors in San Francisco last December. I apologize again for getting pen on your hand. That was embarrassing. You rocked, though! Little Shop is one of my favorite musicals (after Rent, of course)! I just bought the new soundtrack. It's awesome! It sounds like it's sticking to the true form and spirit of the play. The changes are very minor. Everyone did a great job and it sounds like Rosario and Tracie have slipped into their roles perfectly. I am so excited about this coming out. I'm going to take all my friends and family and see it at least 3 times in the theatre. Thank you so much for being a part of an amazing and moving production that touches so many lives.

Dearest Anthony, I have a question:
In the Icelandic version of RENT, staged in 1999, Mimi died in the end in order to make the play more realistic. It wasnt untill I bought the OBC soundtrack that I even knew that Mimi didnt die in the original version. Do you think that Mimi's revival is realistic?

That's so nice of you to answer my question!
I love "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" and some of the most entertaining musicals as rock musicals.
I'll Cover You (Reprise) is one of the most moving songs in the show. I love it and it was one of the first songs from "Rent" that I heard and it motivated me to get the soundtrack and see the show.
I love your work and you really are an inspiration to me.
I can't wait to see the movie!

Anthony--
Just wanted to give my two cents here about how great it has been to see how open you and the rest of the cast has been during the filming of the movie. I was fortunate enough to see RENT in London back in 1999, and it was a truly amazing experience (the day after I got back to the states, I went right out and bought the soundtrack). Needless to say, I've been estatic about seeing the film here in a couple of weeks. Again thanks for reaching out to the fans and please extend that to the rest of the cast as well! Best of luck with all the future holds!
Cheers,
Andrew
P.S.--Random question: even though this is a RENT blog, in Dazed and Confused, when Pink is entering the classroom he greets you and Adam Goldberg by saying "Woodward, Berstein"--which one were you?
Posted by: Andrew on 10/07/05 at 09:03 AM
You are the best Mark, and the best Charlie Brown. I listen to the OBC recording of RENT and YAGMCB all the time. You have a great, distinctive voice, and that's a good thing.
I can't wait to see the movie!
Posted by: Brittany Smyers on 10/08/05 at 02:31 PM
Hey Anthony! I just wanted to tell you that you and the rest of the RENT OBC pretty much changed my life. When the show began back in 96 I was pretty depressed. My life wasn't going too well and I was just in a major slump. Then a friend of mine dragged me down to the Nederlander to see this new musical everyone was raving about. I have to admit, I am NOT a theatre person, in fact I'm anything but. I am primarily (and will always be) a Pearl Jam freak. I had seen off-broadway stuff before and didn't care for it but when I saw you all on stage, it opened up a whole new world for me. Especially because of where my life was, it touched me on such a deep and personal level that I was as enthralled by you guys as I have always been by Eddie Vedder and the PJ guys. It was mostly you and Adam that just resonated so profoundly inside of me and I felt a connection to the characters of both Mark and Roger. I have seen the show twice since then with different casts, but I have to say that you and the others just gave RENT so much power that it has never been the same for me. It is always amazing, but it was the OBC that really brought the characters to life. Then I found out a little more about all of you and it just made me respect you all so much more. You all seem like amazing people and I cannot wait to buy your book. I want to be a writer myself so it'd be interesting to read something by someone that has inspired me so much. So, hoping you'll read this, I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for really opening my eyes and giving me the feeling that I wasn't alone. (PS. I just finished following Pearl Jam around Canada for a month and I just got back, but I'm already planning my next trip to NYC for RENT...how pathetic am I?!) lol

I just wanted to say how much I love you in both hte origional production and the new movie (I own the soundtracks for both) and how happy I am about the fact that at least Mark sounds the same!!

Dear Anthony,
I'm 20 years old and I live in a small town in Ohio. I've always dreamed of being an actor. I just saw the trailer for the film.. and I was so moved I started crying. I was having the worst week of my entire life and then I heard No Day but Today for the first time ever. Thank you so much for opening up my love for theater again. I'll be at the movie theater opening day! Hopefully one day soon... I will be able to see Rent on Broadway. Thank you again... you are an inspiration to others. Jeremy

Anthony, so much has changed since the days of Adventures in Babysitting, I remember watching you as a pre-teen and laughing with my family and then years later discovering that this 'Mark' character i was singing along with was in fact that same red head. I have heard stories of your younger years and met people who, for example, remember you in a production of Oliver where you always forgot your hat so they decided to put it in the freezer to help you remember.
Do you have problems with remembering props anymore? :-p As a Vocal performance major in Kansas striving to break out in the A Cappella world, what do you do to remember the old days of acting and music; and do you try to draw from your earlier years and build on your experiences or do you always look forward?

Thanks for RENT. I saw the show while in college with a bunch of other students with a grouping of diverse disabilities. The play empowered myself and the group with a sense of validation that we all live minute by minute in the face of great adversity. I know that the play wasn't appreciated anywhere nearly enough by certain groups, and the movie will probably follow that same path. I intend to see it over and over again. I thank you and the rest of the cast, either OBC or others for making such a memorable experience.

hey anthony.
Thanx for all the wonderful facts about the movie, life, and you! You're an amazing person really^^. Have fun on whatever escapade you decide to go on in the near future. I keep listening to the CD and invisioning everyones dances and going over the lines in my head. And that just proves how nerdy I am. But, you know, it was mainly the talented voices of the OBC and the dance moves that they choreographed themselves that make RENT so amazing. But then, its not just the cast or the crew, or those who help direct or produce that make this so amazing. Its Jonathan Larson and his vision that gave us this. So to you, him, and the OBC, i say thank you.
Much love to you, your bf, and everyone else,
Kinzie

Dear Anthony,
I would just like to say how you and the whole cant of RENT are so AMAZING, I go to the site everyday to look at new updates and I’m driving all my friends crazy because its all I talk about. I think the message in rent is so strong and every time I watch clips or trailers I cant help but shed a tear I just wanted to say keep doing what your doing because it could make a big difference in someone’s life 0x0x0x0x0 Samantha

Hey Anthony! Thank you so so so so much for keeping up these blogs. I truly do appreciate it. I feel like you guys are really doing all of this for the fans by keeping up updated and involved. I can't wait for your book to come out. I promise i'm buying a copy on the first day its out. I am beyond excited for this film to come out. I was at the movies with two of my girlfriends and we were just sitting there, quietly watching previews when....WE HEARD IT! And boy oh boy, I can't believe we didn't get kicked out of the theater. We were jumping up and down and clapping and belting our freaking brains out. A man behind us actually tapped my shoulder and said "Do you mind?" haha, it was funny and a bit embarassing. I don't care though, you guys rock so much and this production is truly inspiring. It touches my heart on so many levels. The love and friendship in it is just so deep that I cry everytime I see it and everytime I hear the reprise of I'll Cover You. oh, sigh. Anyways, I love you to death. Keep being who you are because you are amazing. Much love and support- Christina

Hey. This is actually Jazzy M. Don't ask me why I'm under a different name, you don't want to know. Anyway, thank for answering all of our questions. If you don't mind, here's one more; When did you first realize that RENT really affected people in such a monumental way? Did it surprise you?
LOL, you're right. The day Mark says "Good grief", I'll be checking out the window for flying cows.
I agree with you when it comes to "I'll Cover You (Reprise)". I cried! I swear, I cried. I'm just an emotional wimp that way. LOL!
It's good to hear a bit more about your book. I'll be the first in town to buy it, I can guarantee that.
Anyway, thank you so much for spoiling us fans to bits. Lots of Love.

heyyy again!
last night i went ot see a sequel to a show that i did with a professional theatre (i did Over The Tavern by Tom Dudzick a year ago and now they are doing the sequel, King O' The Moon). We were all talking about the movie coming out and stressing over the fact of it being here on the 23 rather than on the 11th like in LA and NYC. then we brouht up your name and the Director of "King O' The Moon" came over to us and said, "Anothony Rapp!! please i lived with him", after about 5 minutes of the whole 2 casts (both the Over The Tavern and King O' The Moon cats were there for a talk back with Tom) she went on to say she lived with you in a hotel when u were younger. Her name is Zoya.
Now, i dont no if you even just read this or my last comment but i think u did becuase u sound like someone who really cares. I just thought i would tell you that now i have met two poeple who have crossed pathes with you. Some day i hope to do the same.

BTW. my hunt for a "mark scarf" ended last night. i found one!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
lol- thank you for everything

I'm really glad somebody mentioned your Charlie Brown character. The Kite was the first ever song I sang for an audition for a local children's theater, and I got a pirate in Pirate's of Penzance. Me and my good friend Kris would perform the whole Rent production, me as Mark, and him as Rodger for my mom and her freinds while the dads were watching the game. You made an amazing musical. Thanks for all the great years of singing backstage to your lyrics. Kudos!

Anthony,
I just love this musical. I am one of the biggest musical freaks in my group of friends. I also listen to You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown too. I love your voice in both. You have amazing talent. Your voice makes me melt.

hi anthony
i met you a few years ago at the gay pride day in boston. my friend meaghan and i sang what you own after you performed.we also jumped up behind you and sang back up while you did seasons of love... anyway
i just wanted to thank you. rent has meant more to me than any other musical i've ever seen. it has helped me deal with the death of a very good friend of mine who overdosed when he was 18. i just wanted to thank you for coming back to do the movie. for helping to spread the message of rent.

Thanks for the master class at Third North! It's funny because a lot of what you were telling us is exactly what we are learning in our acting studios. Joe said something about you coming back sometime soon to talk about the movie? That would be exciting! BTW, saw the movie and absolutely loved it!! I was looking in it for the things that you were telling us to do, and I like that you really do do them. Hope to see you soon!

hey anthony, i just got back from seeing the movie, and i wanted you to know how thrilled i am with the whole thing. i'd never seen the musical, but i've listened to the soundtrack obsessively for a year now, and seeing the movie tonight was amazing. i cried through so much of it, it was incredibly touching. thank you so much for your time, effort, dedication, and incredible performance!!!

Dear Anthony Rapp,
When the movie has been opened for a while and things settle down, please do something special with al this "BLOGGING". All of these posts and comments are such a wonderful aspect of the RENT story. All this blogging is a community in itself.

Anthony,
First, I would like for you to know that I have the utmost respect for you. I appreciate you and the rest of the cast talking to the fans. You are truly amazing.
I am very proud of you guys. The movie is so wonderful- even my friend, who has never heard or seen the musical- and HATES musicals- loved it. She left the theatre teary eyed, and she's going to see it with me again this weekend. It's an amazing film, and it's absolutely wonderful to be able to go right down the street to see it, as opposed to flying to New York, and waiting in a line that's three blocks long (LOL).
When I first heard the soundtrack back in '96, and found out that it was YOU, I got so excited. I had no idea you could sing.. I have always remembered you from Adventures of Babysitting- and it's one of my favorite movies (Chi-town baby!!) I love Rent, and will always support it while it's on Broadway, but you'll always be THE Mark, and I wish you much success in everything you do. I'll be sure to buy your book when it comes out.
I'm proud of you. Happy holidays!!

Hedwig = everything good in the world. I believe I was 6 or 7 when I first saw that and Rocky Horror. It probably explains why I was such a peculiar child.
I have a question (that is, if you're still answering them):
Whenever I'm in a show or write something etc, and I come back and look it over after a year or so, I find little bits and pieces that I really wish I'd done differently. Though I happen to think that the entire cast's performances were perfect the way they were, is there anything in the film you wished you'd done differently? -Rachel

Anthony, Thanks so much for letting us know what we wanted to know! I'm sure you actually read these posts (hopefully!) And I want to say that I admire your talent. RENT is one of my favourite musicals, along with Wicked, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Chicago, and Phantom of the Opera. Sorry, off topic. Anyways, another question: Are there any places where you can get a scarf and sweater like Mark's? I ADORE them!
And I also want to say that I agree fully with your quote
"If people don't want to cast me because I'm queer, then frankly, I don't want to work with them"
It's awesome, and it sums up my feelings too. Sortof. I'm bisexual, so it's simmilar, but not exactly alike.
Thanks so much for being an inspiration, and if, somehow, we ever meet, I'll most likely be the girl in a rainbow toque and scarf, wearing a dark green trenchcoat, asking you for a hug.
You rock my socks until eternity :P

Anthony-
So... many... posts! Now I feel like I can't say anything that you haven't heard, or that will really mean something. Gr... frusterating. Well, for one, I looooooooove all of your work, and you are amazing. For my school's talent show, me and my fellow RENThead friends are doing La Vie Boheme, and gueeeeessss what? I'm Mark!! YAY! Anyways, I really apreciate you actually getting in touch with the fans, and I loooooove you. Seriously. You probably have heard this 1000 times and I'm not special or different... but a sincere thank you for doing what you do. As a young actress, I think I look up to you the most.
Thanks!!
Mimi
P.S. This is really pathetic, and I've probably already made a fool of myself, but my friend's friend lives in your building. I was very excited by that... because I would give anything to say even 6 words to you. Again, common. *sigh* Thanks!!!

i just love how you ARE mark. i mean, you don't leave any room for people to realize you are playing a part.. it feels like mark is anthony and anthony is mark.
as a teenage girl, i watch movies and i pick out the guy i've got the hots for.. or the name that i'd say when someone asks "who is your celebrity crush?" you know, like the person that your eyes drift to in every scene. well i'd have to say mark has taken that label for me. such a silly thing to say i know. but all girls do it, i'm just willing to admit it to you so you're able to read this comment and giggle at the thought.
you're amazing though, really. what a wonderful performance. i wish i had been able to see it on broadway too.

Considering you are getting ready for the anniversy concert of Rent, and just got done doing a book tour, the chances of you responding to this are slim, but I just wanted to say, I remember when you were Hedwig @ the City Theatre! :-) and I just saw the reading at the Momentum festival recently as well. I HATE that I've never met you though. HAHA! Oh well, maybe sometime? We're both red heads, we're bound to see eachother! :-P
Peace, Love, and Happiness to you,
Kyle

i know you probably dont even read these anymore, cause the blog supposedly closed...
but, y'know. I read your book, and it was really amazing. Now when i see you in the movie or anything, i can see more than just the actor who plays mark.
Im a huge fan, and i wish you the best of luck in the future.

It has been widely noted that many of the individual members of the OBC of Rent had said, when asked, that they would never go back to the show unless the entire original cast also returned. Yet in this movie, there will be a new Mimi and a new Joanne. What do you think changed peoples' minds? Was it that film is an entirely different medium? That the opportunity was too great to pass up? - Benna
