A Message from the Larson Family

Dear Rent Fans:

We know, we know, you were hoping to hear from Idina or one of our other amazingly gifted actors, but we Larsons haven't had much of a chance at this blog until now, and thought a few of you might want a report from us. We've seen a (pretty darn smooth) "rough cut" of the film and can tell you we were blown away. The emotions were so strong that it took a while for us to take it all in. We're happy to say that we're thrilled with what we've seen and heard and continue to be grateful that Chris Columbus has been so inclusive with us throughout the entire process. (Al keeps saying he wants to adopt Chris, because Chris truly knows what Jonathan was trying to do with RENT and genuinely feels the same way Jon did.)

The movie is simultaneously gritty, raw, real, passionate and beautiful. Chris and everyone involved have done a wonderful job of translating RENT to a new medium while somehow managing to maintain the integrity and essence of Jon's vision. No easy task.

Given the events in the world today, RENT's messages of love and community are more relevant than ever and we're excited to think that a wider audience and new generation will have the opportunity to experience it. We think it will be as inspirational to them as it has been to all of you original RENT-Heads.

Once again, we want to thank each and every one of you for all your thoughts, comments and belief in Jon's work. Your continual support through the years has meant more to us than you'll ever know. More soon.

Much love,
Julie, Nan and Al

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. It makes me very happy to know that you approve of the movie, because we all would have wanted Jonathan to like it, and you probably knew him better than anyone. Many thanks to you and Chris Colubus for helping to create something that captures the true spirit of RENT.

I'm so glad you became apart of the whole project. I don't think this would be as true of an effort if it weren't for you and Chris and the entire cast that was choosen.

Much peace and love to all off you.

Ryan xoxo

While, we love the cast dearly, we are certainly happy to hear from you. I'm so glad that the movie will have the same essence of the broadway musical that we all fell in love with. I can't wait!

Please don't feel that you have any reason to apologize for posting. I want to hear from you, the family, probably more than the actors, because you are the people that are letting this movie happen. It is because of all of you that your son's message can be sent to a broader community. In the beginning, we got to hear from Julie, but only a few times, and lately i was wondering when all of you would write to us here in the blog world. Thank you so much for your love and believing enough in this film for it to become a reality.

With all my love,
kayla

It's so good to hear that you feel that way about the film. I really hope that a whole new group of people can fall in love with the story and characters, and have it change them as it has done to myself and many others. It's wonderful to hear that Jonathon's vision has been kept alive in the film. Rent means so much to me, and I know that it's in the best hands possible.

Rent is an amazing Musical. All I've gotten to do is listen to the soundtrack, because I've never been to New York or anything like that and I couldn't see it when it came here. Even so, hearing poeple talk about REAL things and really going into the big issues is something that people need to hear. It helped me realize who I am and that life isn't as bad as it seems, I can go on and on about what I have learned but I think its more important to just let the Creators, the Actors, the Techies and anyone who was involved with the musical or movie THANK YOU ! You have touched so many people's lives.

Of course we want to hear from you! Knowing that you think even a "rough cut" of the film was amazing makes me even more excited.

While I trust what the actors say, hearing it from you guys just puts me at ease.

Jonathan's message will now be able to reach people and change their lives for years to come, and that is an amazing thing.

Much love! No day but November 23rd!

Thank you so much for posting. It's definetely nice to hear from the Larson family! I am glad that you feel Chris is properly continuing Jonathan's mission... I can't wait to see the film and I'm glad that you approve of it thus far!

Posted by: MJ on 09/02/05 at 03:52 PM

Hi, nice people!

I'm also happy knowing that the deep message of Jon's creation is kept in the movie, and is not changed into a "usual" Hollywood production but still the same passionate masterpiece.

Posted by: Juanjo on 09/02/05 at 03:59 PM

This really means a lot. We have been hearing such wonderful things about Chris Columbus (and of course, the cast), and how devoted they all are to the film, but it's another thing entirely to hear it from you. Just to have this blog at all speaks volumes--please know that you and the team behind Rent have done a superb job in including the fans and remaining true to the spirit of the musical. Most impressive is the way you are still fighting for the causes that were so important to Jonathan through the cell phone donations. Even without seeing more than a few shots of the film, I couldn't imagine it being done better than you all have been doing it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the process with us and please write again when you get the chance!

You guys are awesome. Its good to hear from you again and Im glad you are comftorable with the film. This play changed my life forever and in times like now I especially listen to Jonathon's message and it helps me forget fear. Again, thank you, and love to you all. I hope to see a video blog of you guys even though Julie is camera shy(dont worry I am too) ;)Love Always<3

Posted by: Elise on 09/02/05 at 05:08 PM

Actually we're thrilled to hear from you, so there is no reason to apologize for not being Idina or one of the other cast members. :) (Although I DO love Idina's entries...I both love her and love reading the responses from her Wicked turned RENT fans fighting over who is #1 or #.9)

I'm relieved and excited to hear that you are happy with the rough cut. I was worried at first that the essence of Jonathan's message was going to be lost in the transition from stage to big screen, but it seems my worries can dissapear now which is obviously thrilling news.

I love these blog entries, it's amazing to feel like we have some part in the making of the movie. Jonathan's message can now live on eternally...It really is amazing.

Wow, it sounds like the movie is going to be phenomonal. I am on the edge of my seat.

I haven't even seen rent on stage, and I can already feel it beginning to change my life.

I guess I am a part of that new generation of Rent fans, and I'm truly thankful that it is finally a movie so everyone can enjoy it. Thanks so much!

Dear Larson Family,

It was so wonderful to hear that you loved the movie version of RENT. When I first heard Chris Columbus was directing this movie, I was frightened that the message would be lost in the process of bringing a movie from a concept to the big screen in mainstream Hollywood.

I just read the book written about RENT, and for the first time truly appreciated the gift Jonathan gave to the world. Since I first listened to RENT, I don't think a day has gone by when I haven't thought about it. It really has made me appreciate the life I was given.

Your son, and thereby you, gave the world an incredible gift. Thank you.

PS - Please know that we RENT-heads love hearing from you!

Posted by: Liza on 09/02/05 at 05:24 PM

I'm glad you posted, as I was hoping you would. Jonathan is my hero because Rent inspired me to write for the theater, so I'm thrilled to know that the movie will stay true to the original musical.

Hope you decide to post again in the future!

Thank you for your post. Your opinions means more to me than anyone. My family has had an amazing impact on me, and I'm sure your influences of love and hope have helped make RENT what it is and carried it as far as it has gone. RENT has made a huge difference in my life by helping me understand that I can love myself and everyone else, despite our struggles. I am so happy you were blown away, I can't wait to be blown away too.

THE FIRST REVIEW!!!!!

How fitting that the first online "rough cut" review is coming from the Larson family:) Dear Julie, Nan and Al...thank YOU for staying the course and having the wisdom to wait for the perfect director to come along that would bring Jon's vision to the screen in a blaze of glory! For us original "rentheads" it has been a long road for our dream to come true and for a time there it seemed all hope for a RENT movie was lost, let alone with most of the original broadway cast intact! Your glowing advance "review" of the rough cut assures us all that the wait will have been well worth it. Thanks to you and Chris, Jonathan's theatrical vision will now touch and inspire generations to come!!

It's great to hear that the movie is doing justice to Rent's message. The play has certainly touched me and I only hope that the movie can spread Jonathan's wonderful message to others who may not have been exposed to the story otherwise. Thank you so much for posting, it means a lot to the fans to know that Jonathan's family is so involved.

I think we've heard a lot from Idina and all the other actors that have been nice enough to post on this web site. I think that actually the opinion that matters the most is the one that comes from those who knew Jonathan Larson and actually knew the message he was trying to deliver with this powerful work of art (that's the title Rent deserves). I think only his family and closest friends could truly tell whether the movie successfully portrays the themes Jon clearly establishes in the Broadway show, and to know that the movie has your approval encourages so many of us who still get moved to tears on the hundreth listening of the cast recording of the show.

Posted by: UF-Ray on 09/02/05 at 06:18 PM

Im glad you do post. I look forward to seeing your blogs here along with fabulous Idina and the rest of those fabulous actors. Im so happy to hear the movie has turned out good. Im sure that fellow rentheads have been fearing it will not be the wonderful musical we have came to know, love, and held dearly in my heart. Im so glad to hear though it will be that very movie. Not that i had much doubt i would be dissapointed. Im glad it has reached the expectations of touching all our lives.

Posted by: Andrea on 09/02/05 at 06:20 PM

This message was so much better than anything from the cast. The fact that you all are thrilled with the movie means more to me than any critic or box office figure or award nomination ever could.

I think most Rent fans were most concerned with Jonathan's vision being captured in the movie, because even more so than the actors or the costumes, that's what made us come back to the show time and time again. Knowing that you all were there in his place making sure everything was done right was what assured me that the show I've loved for years would be a great movie that could spread its message for years to come.

Posted by: Amy on 09/02/05 at 06:34 PM

Thank you so much for writting. Jon was a genius. No one can compare to what he made. He is truly the god of musicals. He would have changed broadway today if he was still here. Thank you for making sure rent stays the way it should be

Thank you all so much for taking the time to comment. Your stamp of approval means more to the RENTheads than you could possibly know. As excited as we all are for the film's release, I can promise you that these updates only continue to fan the flame. We have all waited so long for this film, but I am so grateful that it was not rushed into production merely to capitalize on RENT's initial Broadway success. Some things are worth waiting for, and I have a feeling that this film is certainly one of them. Everything finally seems to have come together the way it was meant to. Thank you for preserving Jonathan's vision and for keeping us all in mind.

Thank you so much for posting. I am really glad to hear from you. When I found out RENT was being made into a movie, I was a little worried that the movie wouldn't stay true to the play. Then I found out that you were all involved and it made me feel a lot better knowing that Jonathon's family, the people who knew him best, would be there every step of the way. I am so happy to hear that you all love the movie. RENT truly is an incredible story, and I hope that this film gives more people the opportunity to experience what so many already have. I know RENT changed the way I look at life, and I just hope so many others can take in the message that Jonathon has shared with us. I am so excited, I can't wait. Wow...what a vote of confidence. That was really great to hear.

I saw RENT for the first time almost ten years ago...nine-ish years ago? I sometimes can't believe it's been that long. I was 22, still in college, trying to find a place where I fit in a world that I REALLY didn't fit into. I remember sitting in the theater watching the play, mesmerized, thinking...this is IT; this is who I am, every single one of these people. I had my favorites, of course (Collins and Angel and Joanne and Maureen...oh, how I loved Maureen). But I also identified with every character (even Benny), every song, every emotion, every theme. And it was so comforting to know that even though the characters were fiction, someone real had written it, someone got it, someone felt just like I did. And no matter how out of place or unsettled I felt, all I had to do was listen to the music, and I could return to that first time in the theater. It was such a gift, and I will be forever grateful for and appreciative of it.

Thank you so much for your post.

More than the Cast, More than the Hype, More than that which is will be an amazing movie, I'm glad that Jonathan's work will be seen on such a large level. Of course "Rent" holds a special place in my heart, but even more that that is the story behind the movie and the play: the story of an artist struggling between convension and staying true to his art. Jonathan Larson's story tuches me through "Rent", the Biography of his life, and of "Tick Tick Boom". I identify with him so much, and take heart that'd he'd agree "No One Is Alone".

To the Larson Family,
Although I'm not a big fan on posting comments on sites, i really wanted to post to this one just to say that I'm very happy that Mr. Larson's loved ones approve of the movie version. It really does mean a lot to the Rentheads in the world that you love and support this project as much as we do! im even more excited to see the film version of the musical that has been a part of my life since the beginning.

Mahalo for the post, and we all hope to hear from you again!

Dear Larson Family,

Thank you so much for posting. I know you've heard this a million times before, but I saw the show the summer it opened and it truly changed my life. I teach middle school chorus and we've performed "Seasons of Love" for graduation several years. I took my then eight-year old daughter to the show and it has been an important part of our lives ever since. She turns 18 two days after the film opens and you can bet we'll be first in line! Thanks for keeping the dream alive!

Dear Julie, Nan, and Al,

It was so great to hear from you! I love hearing your perspective on how everything is coming along. I am so glad that Chris has been able to hold true to Jonathan's vision. I can't wait to see this movie. I hope that the three of you are doing well.

Not that we don't enjoy hearing things from the principle characters, but when you get to hear things from everyone else, that is when everything truly falls in place. Thank you all for making Rent into a movie. I want to be the first one to see it, but sad I won't. I don't think any of you know the impact this musical has had on people like myself. It truly is a dream that it is becoming a movie. I am counting down the days till it happens. This has truly been an emotional experience for me, just like the musical now movie. Thank you.....this means so much to all of us.

I was having a rough day...until now! After reading this, I have a HUGE smile on my face and I'm reminded how great life really is. When everything seems full of "doom and gloom" I'm reminded that I still have my salvation..."RENT!" Thanks for keeping us posted on things Larson family, you guys just made a lot of people's day. I'm happy to hear that Chris Columbus is doing such a wonderful job with the film and I know we're all dying to see it. As many people already said...Jonathan touched my life in such a positive and profound way and for that I'll always be thankful. "RENT" is like the Bible to many of us and this show will always be a huge part of our lives. November 23rd...here we come...let's hope the next 2 months fly by quickly!

I'm so glad that you think the movie is going to capture Jonathan's message because thats all we could hope for. I cannot wait for this movie to come out.. although i'm going to miss all these blogs so so much. Thank you for letting us be a part of this experience. Everyone involved are truly incredible people. Thanks for letting everyone know that it still holds true to what Jon wrote, he is a genious. I'm just sad that he isn't going to get to see the whole world fall in love with what he wrote.

I know everyone has already said this, but it truly means SO much to all of us that this film has your stamp of approval upon it. The faith that the cast has had in this process was and is encouraging, but the notion that you, Jonathan's family, find this fitting is just so powerful. We all know that it will be wonderful, and thank you so much for blessing us all with this chance. I can't wait to see this show that I have loved, and that has impacted me so much over the past almost-10-years, on the big screen! Thank you so much. You'll never know how truly grateful so many of us are.

Posted by: LeighBF on 09/03/05 at 09:05 PM

Everything I needed to say has been said already. Like many of the people above, and even more people around the world, RENT has touched my life in a mighty way. When I heard news of RENT being turned into a movie, I was quite furious...because I was afraid the beauty and message of the show will be lost. Throughout this process of reading posts, watching trailers, and interviews, and all the pictures... I have been amazed and excited but still a bit worried. Until now, I have always had some doubt. Knowing that the family of the beautiful and gifted Jonathon Larson is amazed comforts me and I know it comforts many around the globe. Thank you.

Posted by: David on 09/03/05 at 09:59 PM

I just wanted to thank you again...like 200 people before me. This film is truly a bright spot in the chaos! Love and life is everything as all of us from the Coast know and the muscial showed this and now the movie is here for a massive group to look forward to and recieve it's message. I am soo excited!

Everyone else has said what I wanted to say and so much more. It is a pleasure to hear that you love the movie, from what you've seen of it. It means a lot to know that Jonathan's vision came through. Thank you so much for the words. I guess the only words to say are what a journey it has been for all of you. Again thank you.

Posted by: Alex on 09/03/05 at 11:11 PM

I was not planning to post at all on this blog, but after reading this entry, I found that I needed to.

I cannot stress enough that it is YOU we want to hear from, YOU we want to thank, YOU we owe so much to, because you are the connections to the wonderful individual who crafted the play that influenced so many lives. Please, do not feel inferior or unwanted--without your strength and your influence, I am sure that RENT would not be where it is today: in a position to affect even more people, to teach them and to touch them.

Thank you for helping RENT to grow, and for fostering Jonathan's extraordinary talents. "No day but today," "measure your life in love," "today for you"--such simple concepts, such powerful revelations. I speak for the entire community of individuals who have seen RENT, when I say that we truly cannot thank your family enough for all you have given us.

Posted by: Courtney on 09/03/05 at 11:15 PM

It's good to here from the Larson family.
I think some people may have been worried about how the movie would turn out, but if you all loved it then surely it will be a great movie.
Thanks for keeping in touch with all of us. <3

One of these days I'm gonna be able to explain exactly how much Jonathan and his work means to me.

I'll explain how it inspired me to become a musical theater writer.

I'll explain how it cemented a fiery, burning love for the medium, which has enriched my life immeasurably in these recent years.

I'll explain how his music feels like my music. Not merely good, but MINE. So much a part of me that when I hear it, it feels like home.

I'll tell you how he has always given me inspiration, how I only have to listen to his music to know that this is the path in life that I want to take. The only path I COULD take.

One of these days, I might even be able to tell how terrible and almost poetic it felt when my retina detached, and all the doctors seriously thought that it was a sign that I had Marfan's Syndrome (I don't, or if I do, I don't have any of the resultant heart problems, but still. The connection is eerie).

One of these days, I'll meet you all, and I will have the words to show you how I feel.

RIght now, I think that if I met you, I would just cry and be incomprehensible.

Thank you so much for your post! When it was first announced, I was apprehensive at the thought of "Rent" the film. Then I heard most of the Original Broadway cast was on board and that the Larson family was involved and supported the film. I'm so glad to hear that Chris Columbus has maintained the vision of Jonathan's work and that you all are happy with the results.

From the time I first listened to "Rent" on CD, then saw it on stage, the show has been such an inspiration to me. The words Jonthan wrote have stuck with me since and I carry those sentiments with me to this day. Though not from "Rent," it is the song, "Love Heals" (from Sherie Rene Scott's album) that is among my favorites and has provided me with much comfort and encouragement in my darkest as well as brightest of days.

Thank you again for your post and my thoughts as always, are with you all.

Best,
Lisa

THANK YOU A BILLION TIMES for allowing RENT to come into more hearts than it already has! I had to come all the way from Norway to New York to see it on Broadway, and it has become a MUST for me to see it whenever I come (so far 3 times but I'm only 22, so...)! I'm only regretting the fact that the move won't be coming to Europe before January, but I've waited this long, so... It's really good to hear your part of the story so keep those blogs coming our way! Lots of Love, and No day but today

knowing that you were involved with the movie was awesome to hear. And now, knowing that you were "blown away" by the movie is amazing to hear. By now, I'm sure you have had enough Rent to fulfill any Rentheads lifetime (if that made any sense...), but knowing you approve of the film is great. I know I am rambling now, but thank you for updating!

It's such good news to hear that Johnathan's family loved the movie. It must be absolutely wonderful! I can't wait to see it; either the premiere or when it comes out in theaters. I'm in the midst of making an Angel-esque costume which i will wear one of those days. It's going to be awesome as I am fairly creative and talented with a needle. Your opinion is so important as is the opinions of the cast. I never got to see the original cast because i was only 4 at the time, but this is almost just as amazing and I will get to see the talented cast. I'm so glad this was finally made into a movie and I await opening day anxiously. Thanx Julie, Nan, and Al for attentively participating in Johnathan's legacy. All us RENTheads appeciate it!

Don't be ridiculous! OF COURSE we want to hear from you!! I'm so happy that you've contributed your opinions because it puts those pesky lingering doubts to ease (not that I had many, of course :D). I never got the chance to see the original cast (I was only about 9), but I was lucky enough to see it in 2003, in New York in its home theatre. The musical and its message have really stuck with me. I'm very excited to see most of the original cast and the newcomers preform it on the silverscreen.

We'll always be here to support the legacy and vision that Jonathan left behind. We can't possibly thank you enough for staying behind it and letting RENT be shared with the world.

Every now and then someone or some persons come along and revolutionize certain aspects of our culture. We take hold on that which touches us deeply, and become enlightened as well. I believe Jonathan Larson did just that. The impact of this show on so many individuals is amazing. RENT fans all over the world have grown individually and collectively as a result of his work. Much love and thanks to Jonathan, his family, and of course the cast and crew for an amazing show. During a time when war, poverty, racism, and countless other hardships exist, we need to be reminded of love, compassion, and tolerance. No day but today!

I live in Florida and recently went to New York in July '05 on a three year anniversary with my girlfriend. One of the highlights of the trip was viewing my first broadway show. I had the pleasure of seeing Rent. I became an instant fan. The cast is talented beyond my expectations, but the story moved me. I am on the edge of my seat with anticipation of the movie release. Thank you Jonathan, and family, for this experience.

I'm sure Jon is very proud. Keep us posted :)

I am very happy to be hearing from such an amazing group of people. I want to thank you for taking the time to write that to us... it is amazing coming from a source so close to Jonathan, and I know you all knew what he would have wanted. Cant wait to see how it all comes out! Best wishes always.

Thanks for taking to time to write to us! I'm so excited to finally see the movie although it's a little bitter sweet for me as the person who introduced RENT into my life and so many others as well, my baby brother, passed away this past July at just 19 yrs old. He was the most excited about the movie and would email me each time a new trailer came out. I'm sure Martin and Jonathan are up there talking about the show that changed my brother's life and belting out showtunes for everyone around them.

Your Jon has given our family so much happiness through RENT and for this I can't thank you enough!

Jonathan nust have been a brilliant person, to have made such a difference and touched so many poeple. Think of how many poeple he is reaching now! Thank you so much for posting!

Wow! The comments in here is overwhelming! Glad to know that I have A LOT of fellow RENT fans all over. RENT is one of my favorite musicals! I've seen the local staging here in the Philippines thrice! Can't wait for the film!

Of course we want to hear from you. It is funny, because a while back, I bought the DVD of the PBS miniseries "Broadway:The American Musical" I watch the part about Jonathan over and over again, and I want to say my heart goes out to you. I had the heart problem that he had, and I want you to know how incredibly profound this show is for me, and how much your son has touched my life. Even though I never met him, I feel like I know him, having seen RENT, and listened to TIC TIC BOOM, and this show means so much to me, and I know you're very proud of Jonathan!!

p.s. If you go get that DVD I mentioned, there is a special feature of Jonathan singing Sunday from TIC TIC BOOM, and it is fantastic! It's definitely worth the money!

The fact that you are so moved by this film is more incentive to see it than the best review a critic could give. (Not that I wasn't already planning on seeing it multiple times...)

I know I'm not the only one who's excitedly counting down the days!

I'm so glad you're happy with the end results.

I love hearing from you guys just as much as hearing from everybody else.

Thanks!

It is so amazing to hear this from the Larsons. Jon has changed my life through his work and I am blown away (and even MORE excited for the film that Im shaking) that this film has your %100 blessing. It is such a blessing to the RENTheads to know that this will hold the same raw emotion and passion that Jon intended to reach the audiences. This movie will be amazing, and will change the lives of all who see it. Looking forward to the movie and RENThead, Alex

I cannot even begin to describe how deep RENT has touched my life. After seeing it I have started to live in a different way I did before and I have discovered, thanks to Jonathan´s work, my passion for theatre that I will pursue forever. I am very glad that you have posted to tell us your opinion on the RENT movie. I am truly devoted fan, who must admit I wasn´t really comfortable with RENT´s movie coming into the wild without Jonathan and his opinion and also the fact that Chris was directing it. But after seeing trailers and videos and reading some blogs, my opinion has changed inmediately. I am truly happy that you feel the same way too because, as everyone already said, your opinion means a lot to us because you were the ones who really knew Jonathan and will keep his memory along with his work, intact.

Keep in touch, please,
Danielle

Dear Larson family,

RENT I feel will be just as powerful a film as it was a stage show. Perhaps even more so, as it will be reaching out to countless others who will be discovering it for the first time. It is what so many of us young people in this day and age believe in. Love, acceptance, loyalty, trust, hope, stregnth, friendship ... no matter how broken the heart, no matter how bleak the situation, there is always a better day ahead.

Thank you so much for allowing this film to be made. Jon, I'm more than sure would be pleased.

Thank you so much for your genuine comments. RENT changed my life in so many ways when I first saw it on Broadway and I've been anxiously awaiting the release of the movie ever since I heard it was being made. I was especially excited when I found out that you guys were going to be so closely involved. I think that shows what a tremendous director Chris is. And I'm so thankful to hear that this movie is staying so close to Jonathan's original vision. It wouldn't be the same otherwise....just as this post and this movie wouldn't be the same without your presence!

God bless,

i just want to say that RENT has been my favorite show since I was about 12 years old (I'm 17 now). I've seen it 8 times on Broadway and twice on the National Tour and I know basically the whole show by heart now...I'm so glad to hear that the movie is going to live up to the show. I can't wait to see it and thank you for keeping us posted!

I LOVE RENT!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Rent Fanatic on 09/09/05 at 10:16 AM

Jonathan's vision was and is revolutionary. It is so wonderful to hear from the family that this movie is something that the creator himself would approve of. I cried when I saw the preview for the movie. I have seen RENT 9 times in NYC, and have recently moved away from NYC to attend law school - it is a blessing to be able to have what I love most from my home - here with me in Pennsylvania. The music is inspirational, moving, and addictive. I would be lying if I said I don't know every word to every song - clearly I do. I may be one of the biggest "RENT Heads" there is, and although your loss of Jonathan was tragic - I can safely say that he accomplished more in his short life, and touched more people - than most people could even dream of. Thank you for your comments. Take good care.

I tried to word this carefully. Watching these renthead videos depress me. Theres only two people that maybe diserve to go. From being a part of a gagillion RENT threads I know that there are wayy bigger fans. Wicked fans need to get off the camera. Just because you love Idina doesn't mean you should go. I love Idina Menzel, I've seen Wicked..but this is for RENT and I think that Idina would agree. Maybe I'm bitter becuase I was supposed to go and I would have probably won this but my left pinky is a bigger RENThead then most of these people. Someone once said that it was early and hard to find something to say---you knew about this for weeks, when I found out I wrote down what I was going to say. ONE person mentioned Jonathan Larson, ONE person. I guess I was expecting people who were truly passionate about RENT and to see old school RENTheads who camped outside the neder (i was too young when it came out). There are some videos that I was just like WHAT!?.. and basically I voted based on the saftey of the RENT cast from..for lack of better word crazy fans. This might not get on but I thought it needed to be said by someone. It almost disgusts me that someone who really diserves to go, wont.

this is not anything against the cast or the larsons or anyone involved in the movie. There just my thoughts and my comments and I think thats why there is a comment button- to let everyone know how you feel. All my love to everyone. Rock on<3.

Hi!

This play touched me so much, and means so much to me and my own family. It has been a large part of my life since I first heard the music back in 1996. I'm delighted to hear that the film is so true to the stage play. Congratulations! I hope to see the movie as soon as possible, but I am moving out of the country on Nov. 19th and may not see it until I return (next year?)

Be well!

With love,

Dear Julie, Nan, Al, and Chris,
I've been following all the additions to this site and am very excited about the movie. Looks like it's going to be wonderful!

By way of appreciation, I'd like to share my story (hard as it may be to believe).

I lived in the East Village in the mid-late 80s and early 90s, in a loft-like apt, pursuing photography while my 2 roommates were respectively doing graphic design and conceptual fine art. We became close friends with neighbors. We hung out in neighborhood cafes and clubs all the time. We threw huge themed-art parties. We went to rallies, protests, and performance art events. And yes, through all of this we had friends around us living with and dying from AIDS. It was a beautiful, scary, and wonderful time filled with love for art, life and connections.

Though I'm in NYC, I didn't see the show when it first opened: I was very ill myself that year with AIDS. Wasn't able to emotionally approach it till 1998 and have since seen it almost a dozen times (thanks to Jonathan's lottery ticket legacy). I sit there quietly in the audience in tears, seeing so much of my life up there on stage. (I even spent several years going to Friends in Deed here in NYC, the support center Jonathan based the support group scenes on.) I am in good health this year and understand "there's no day like today."

Jonathan amazingly and accurately captured our lives with Rent: the trailers REALLY look like the "place" we called home. Though I never met him, I want to thank you for guarding his beautifully life-affirming and perfect snapshot of the world we inhabited. With a very full and grateful heart, I'm so looking forward to seeing the film. (I'll probably see it with my graphic designer and conceptual artist friends!)

Peace,

Th-

I can't begin to describe how thankful I am for your post. I was extremely skeptical about the movie at first because I was afraid that it would seem like any other Hollywood movie and not the influential, emotional musical we all love so dearly. It means a lot to me to know that the most important critics of this movie (you) think Jon would approve of it. I can't wait for the movie to come out!!!

Rent is my all time favourite broadway show ever, i heard that it was going to a movie like a year ago because my friend works in the theatre ever since then I've been hoping that it comes true and now it has, ive only seen rent once but if I had the money and the time, i would be watching it as much as I can.Thank you for letting it be made into a movie, its such a dream come true I'm sure for many of us

Thank you for raising such a wonderful person

It's wonderful to hear from you, and wonderful to know that the people closest to Jonathan think that his message is being carried on in the upcoming movie. I think we were all a bit worried that RENT might be cheapened through the mainstream movie outlet, but if you guys, of all people, feel that the movie preserves the original "gritty, raw, real, passionate and beautiful" message, then all my worries are gone.

Thank you so much!

Thank you for supporting your son throughout the years whil ehe was struggling in NYC- you guys raised a wonderfully talented man that has touched too many people to count with his insprirational story and his wonderful music. Thank you for your support of continuing his work today and keeping it true to his vision. THANK YOU!

Rent has touched me more that I could have ever imagined. The music and the simple message is one that I will never forget and do not spend a day without thinking about. This summer I was lucky enough to go back to Broadway and see Rent for a second time and all I can say is that it is truly as good as it always has been. Jon's message will live through his music and the simple beauty of Rent. Even though I have heard them hundreds of times, Glory or Your Eyes still makes me cry. His message will not be forgotten- his legacy will live on forever.

Jonathan's Rent has been my inspiration and motivation for a long time already, and I cannot wait to see the movie. I was a little nervous that it would be taken over by some bigshot celebrities but I'm so thankful that it is the people closest to Jon that are producing it. Thank you so much and I can't wait to see it. Jon will always have a place in my heart for everything he has done.

Posted by: Ana on 09/11/05 at 07:28 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm so glad to hear from the Larson family because you all are the embodiment of your son and brother, and I'm so happy to hear your approval of the Rent movie because if you didn't like it then I'm sure we, the fans, would not either. And it was a pleasure to see you all in the video diaries as well.

The message that Rent conveys still stands true in today's changing world, maybe even more so, but just listening the soundtracks is so uplifting and heartwrenching that it causes me to stop sometimes and think about what I am doing and what I will be doing. I'm so glad that Rent can be enjoyed by the masses and the theater-phobes. This is a great gift.

Thank you again,
Leeann

Thank you for letting this movie happen. I know that it will occupy a space in my heart that is currently only occupied by family, a few close friends, and all things RENT. I truly cannot wait.

Ever since the first time I heard Jonathan's amazing score and beautiful story I was a true fan. His work is simply amazing. As a young person today my life has been truly touched by RENT and Tick, Tick Boom! Thank you for all of your support and for sharing this brilliant show with all of the nation on screen. It's not often that such a show comes along as RENT, the lives it had touched and the awareness it has generated is simply amazing. Thank you.

Thank you so much for everything. From this play I have learned so much and I have finally been able to live my life the way I want, and to take each and every day one at a time and really appreciate everything that I have. Jonathan was a visionary and you made it all possible in the way that you may have taught him and raised him and you have saved many lives with the strong central theme of the show.

today when i read your message it gave me chills. Jonathon was amazingly talented which i know you're well aware of. i've seen RENT only once but it was the best show i've ever seen and i cried throughout the entire show. i know that the movie will probably have the same affect on me. i also recently bought the sheet music to RENT, the begining of the book tells the story of how RENT came to be and when i read it i cried for the family and friends who knew and loved this amazing man. peace and love

Rent was a phenomenon that blew apart my thoughts of what theater should be like. It was powerful and inspiring. I am a huge fan and I am counting the minutes until this movie comes out. I am so happy to hear it is what we hoped it would be!!!!

Thank you for supporting this movie. I hope it will be a shining tribute to the man who brought us what i believe to be one of the best musicals of all time.

I could go on probably for hours about how much Jonathan and his work means to me (many of my college essays were on just that!), but everyone has beaten me to it. So to ask probably a new question: Has anyone ever considered trying to bring Superbia onto the mainstage?

Dear Larson Family,

I am so happy to hear that Jonathan's family thinks so highly of the movie. I am extremely excited about it. I've never been able to see RENT on Broadway, but I was able to see a touring performance of it in my hometown a couple of years ago. I had been listening to the soundtrack for years before that; I saw the special, on Dateline I think, about Jonathan and RENT and I heard just a snippet of a song and decided then and there that I had to hear the whole thing. I bought it as soon as I had the money. A couple of years later, my cousin's husband died of AIDS and I took it pretty hard. I never got to know him, but he was so young: only 27. I was 15. Jonathan's music helped me put everything in perspective. Thank you for raising such a wonderful, talented, and insightful son. His creation has touched millions. I know it has touched me. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Katie

Rent is my *favorite* musical, and I feel joy each time I see it on stage or when I listen to the soundtrack. I'm in tears every time! LOL. I'm glad to hear that you like it, and I can't wait to see it- especially if it has the passion and intensity as the stage version.

I saw the trailer, and I wanted to cry.. again. LOL

Dear Larson Family and All Involved with RENT:

I am one of the folks who have done the Hurrican Katrina evacuee/ refugee shuffle these past three weeks, and although we (my family and me) consider ourselves with thankful hearts (!!!) to be on the more fortunate side of this storm than others, it is still very hard to lose a childhood home (my parents' whole life), apartments, cars,be separated from family and friends, not knowing when or where you'll see them again, etc.

During these past three weeks, I have truly come to appreciate the sentiment "No day but today." Life is so strange, and you just never know - never ever ever...

If nothing else, please know that without the strength of your son's vision to listen to, to sing (loudly at 3AM while driving to another strange city) with, to share with siblings, to just reflect on, I don't think this evacuee would have pulled through half as well. His dream has carried me in many, many bad moments through the past three weeks, and since this is my first moment to get to a computer for any real amount of time, I wanted you guys to know that...

Thanks for sharing him with us!

With lots of respect, appreciation and intense emotion, especially gratitude -
Leigh

Thank you for sharing your story with all of us. I was so touched the first time I heard Jonathan's story. It made the entire experience of RENT become such a lasting and engulfing one. I have become such an addict of Rent ever since I first logged onto siteforrent.com. I appreciate you supporting the movie production of Rent so that the rest of us can watch RENT over and over without going to New York. I nearly cried when I read your post, the complete story behind RENT continues to be so amazing. It is so awesome that you have set up the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation. My favorite part of buying the RENT cd was the bit written about Jonathan in back of the insert. It was so AWEsome, I wanted to know who wrote it. Once again thank you for sharing all these amazing stories!!! God Bless.

I remember the first time I heard RENT. I must have been 11, it was in my cousin's car and they were singing this song about how this girl was really hot and eveyone wanted her. I tried to sing along...pretending I knew what I was doing. Seven years later I realize that the song was "Take Me or Leave Me"...I still belt it at the top of my lungs, but this time I know what I am doing. I love RENT and every time I listen through the whole show I always cry. It makes me so happy. Mark is my favorite, we have a lot in common. My friends and I have cast each other as characters from RENT. I'm Mark, my friend Beatrice is Mimi, Jon IS Angel, etc... It's a subject we can go on and on about for hours...days even. RENT is a rush, and rush of joy, happiness, pure energy... It has touched my life, Jonathan has touched my life and it's a little bit brighter because of it. RENT makes me smile! Oh, and I can't wait to see The Tango Maureen!

I was so happy to read your letter to all us 'Rent-Heads'. Your son, and brother's music changed my life forever. I cannot wait for the movie. I thank you for keeping Jonathan's legecy alive! He was a great man. And, will always have a special place in my heart. You are an amazing family, and wish you all the best.

What I needed to hear before viewing this movie is what you guys just told me. To hear that his original vision is crystallized in this new medium means the world to me and to every other RENThead in the world. Jonathan's music touched me in a way that nothing else could have when I was 16 and heard it for the first time. He was speaking to me, and to every other kid or adult or ANYBODY wanting to know if it's okay to live life and really enjoy being in love and living through disease, not giving up because of it.

I attend Adelphi University because of your son's passion, and in my final year at the university, I start to really wonder about HIS friends, his classes, his motivations, his INspirations.

I'm just...so glad you, as a family, posted, and I would love to read more in the future.

Thank you so much. :-) Please take care.

I'm a mom from Long Island. I saw Rent for the 5th time on Tuesday and I once again walked away filled with compassion and love and a renewed sense of community and charity and of course a deep touching sadness. I'm happy the world will soon hear Jonathan's message - let it ring loud and clear. I've taken a lot of kids to see the play - I know it impacts their lives. I think this play has the power to open up even the coldest of hearts. Still hoping to one day win the Starving Artist's seats ( I always try!). I'll remember to bring a box of tissues to the movie. Thank you.

I am always cautious when I hear that another musical has been turned into a film producion--it seems that the story can get lost or altered or the show looses popularity after the video has been released. But something is telling me that this will be different. I am very glad to hear that you are thrilled with the final product and am counting the days until I am able to do so, too. Peace.

In today's entertainment world, we are struggling to find new ideas to fulfill our "needs" each time we head to a movie theatre. and unfortunately, we find ourselves somewhat disappointed, where the moviemakers failed to capture the vision of the original (book/broadway-theatre show/etc. like the phantom of the opera.) so it is such a relief for you, jonathan larson's family, to let us know that chris columbus was able to capture and keep jonathan's vision and message intact. i hope that through this movie, more people will be moved by the timeless and universal philosophy of 'rent.' i am very much looking forward to seeing it this thanxgiving. much love to your family.

love, lisa & lauren.

ps. RENT rox my sox.
ps again. im (lisa) putting "measure your life in love" as my quote for the yearbook (dont worry! im going to credit jonathan). because i believe that that message will always prevail, no matter how many years ahead people will look at the yearbook.

Just want to say I can't believe this amazing piece of theatre is being placed on the big seen for all too see. I can't wait to enjoy it all over again. This past june I travelled from Miami to NY to see RENT for the first time{sorry,I kinda missed it when it came down here last year}. It was breath taking and emotionally draining. Now those of my friends that never had the opportunity to be touched by this musical, will be able to feels its power. I'd like to thank the Larson family and the cast for allowing this to evolve to the big screen. Continue to create and inspire others to do so.

There is something about rent that speaks to me. The humanity, the comapassion of the characters and compassion put into it.I never thought something could mean so much to me. thinking of rent, immediatly sends shivers through my body. The music sends me insantly to a world of love and integrity, somehow I know that no matter what everything is going to be fine.I have never been able to see the play, I can't even imagine what that would be like. For now , I feel honored just to hear the music.

i remember the first time i heard RENT, i was 9, going home from summer day camp, and my mom had seen it, and she was listening to the soundtrack. i didnt even care, until i heard roger say "beyond the cheap colored lights". i just thought that was funny, but now, as an actor, i realize how profound all of it was. i'm only 14 now, but i feel like RENT has put so much into my life, it got me through so much. just those first five notes in Seasons of Love are enough to make me break down in cry. Jonathan was a beautiful person, and since he still lives in his family, who knew him best, i'm ecstatic that you like the movie. and, ive even got some kids of my generation to like it.

I have never had the pleasure of seeing rent first hand, unfortunately, the australian production didnt make it too me, and i was too young to realise what i was missing out on. It was through a very good friend who played one song (what you own) in his car one day and i was instantly obsessed and have been ReNt's number one australian fan ever since. I have often pondered when a movie of the greatest musical ever will be made and several years ago when i heard rumours that justin timberlake would be playing mark cohen, i nearly had a coronary! but today i come accross this website and find the cast is drawn largely from the original broadway cast and from what i can tell, the story and songs have been kept in tact. its reassuring to know that the family of the brilliant man who shared this gift with the world have given their approval to the movie remake of it and its such a relief to know that it will remain essentially the same! go team, cant wait for it to open in australia!

i think i speak for everyone (at least i hope i do) when i say that jonathan larson is (not "was") one of the most influential artists of this generation. RENT in itself has transformed so many teens, kids, and adults alike. the message that you never really own anything, just "rent" it; that so many things can happen over the course of a year - and even a lifetime, it's amazing sometimes how life holds itself together, fighting against the perpetual "rend" that would destroy it; and the message that life is precious, and you never really know what you have, and who your true friends are, until they aren't there anymore. and to our generation; how so many people, with so many differences, take comfort - and consolation - in the messages that RENT sends. it's funny to think sometimes, but i'm sure someone out there is with me: that at one time or another, that you thought jonathan larson is the only person that somehow understood what you needed to hear, and what life was truly like - as an artist, a lover, a friend, and as a person. years and years ago, before i first saw/heard/heard of RENT, i struggled with choices in life, and was unsure of what i wanted to do. it wasn't until a school field trip landed me at the stoop of the Nederlander Theater. those precious hours that i spent inside, watching & listening - i was completely in awe. it sounds trite to say, but i had found what i was looking for. i picked up the big black "RENT" book (which still to this day gets read like it's the first time), and learned all about the struggle of a young artist named jonathan larson. i cried. honestly. over and over. the people that knew him, the struggles of writing and producing. the hardship of being poor and working towards what you love; not knowing if you'll ever really make it. or knowing if you'll make it out alive.

sorry to have taken up so much of your time, but every time i hear those first chords of "Seasons of Love", i get chills, and realize how much RENT has changed my life. both as a person, an artist, and a friend.

life in itself is such a struggle. and jonathan larson has made every one of us realize what makes us great. the ability to love. the kindness we show to strangers. the strength to sit outside a theater for days on end - just to get a ticket to see the same show you've seen so many times. truly think: "how DO you measure a year?" do something with yourself that you know you'll love. measure your year. how ironic that true love is immeasureable. make your mark. jonothan larson made is. and he still is today.

to the larsons: god bless you for bringing such a remarkable person in this world. i wish there was something i could say to let you know how much he changed my life. all i can say is... thank you.

to jonathan, wherever you are: no day but today.

I'm sitting here crying as I read through all these posts - realizing that there is a lot of love in the world and maybe we will all be okay someday.

Hi there! I just wanted to say thanks to you guys for allowing this movie to be made. I just got the soundtrack and saw Jon's picture on it. I want you to know that I think of him often. I had the heart problem that he did, and because of this I feel a kinship with him. RENT has given me so much, and the fact that I will now get to see my favorite show up on screen is almost too much! Thanks guys! God bless!

This broadway play is the only one i have seen and it was really good, all the actors made each person they played come along and Jon made this play make u feel all your emotions which alive at the end of the play. U feel like u can relate to each charachter in one form or another. I also like the fact that it pushes the envolope in a sence that no other musical play that i have heard of tells a storey about gay's, and bi's and lesbian's and croos dressers hence the fact that people can relate in one form or another. I'm glad it came out in theatre's soon because people can see it and people who haven't seen it can fall in love with it like many others. Even when i hear the soundtrack i get the feeling i got when i saw it for the first time. I takes me back and remember the pain the anger, the sadness, and joy i felt. But the best part i think of the whole thing is how Angel held everybody together and once he/she dies everybody starts to forget what is important to them which is friendship and they realize it in the end, which is what got me to fall in love with and and i hope that it lives on for many more years and it survives the test of time like i know it will.

Dear Larson Family and everyone else who is reading this,

When I say that RENT has changed my life I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I was in a preformance of RENT in 2003 and funnily enough played the exact oppisite of what I am. the director cast me as collins because I have a low voice but never realized how important that role was. I realized that you must live your life as if it is your last because if you don't you won't experience the joys of life. This play is not only a play, it's a way of life. RENT really has shown me life experiences and taught me about many things that my parents won't even discuss.

I have been in many preformances throughout my life so far but never have I been so fulfilled when the audience clapped but when I played Collins in a small gym for my camp. The passion that Mr.Larson has put into this show is incomprehendable. Everytime someone plays any song or tune from this show I know that Jonathan is up there watching over smiling.

By reading this website it proves that Mr.Larson was not only a telnted writer but a revolutionist for broadway shows everywhere. Nobody would ever think about writing a musical about diesease and things that face us everyday. These obstacles bring us through the day living life as though it's the end.

How do I measure a year? that is a question that I will be pondering till the day I die. But of course on the other hand all I really have to do is play "Seasons of Love" for the 452nd time and realize that I should live life to the fullest, not pass up any oppurtunities that come my way, and of course measure in love.

To all of you reading I say goodbye
To Jonathan Larson: NO DAY BUT TODAY!

I cried just watching the trailer.

I am SOO glad that the people who got a hold of this film cared enough to consult with the Larson family. It shows a concern for quality and integrity that is essential for the task of translating something as powerful as this. And, screwing an idea up that is so good is such a crime. (I was recently completely scarred by watching the Phantom of the Opera Movie. If anyone has seen that or heard the soundtrack you will know what I mean.)

Rent changed my life as well. I went to an open audition in Atlanta, and was called back to SF, LA, and NYC. I didn't ultimately make the cast, but it is because of your son's vision that me and many others had such an opportunity. The hope and excitement, learning all of the music, and making friends with some of the Angel Company while they were in SF was truly a gift in my life and I am so grateful.

Thank you for really owning this and taking the time to be involved.

To the Larson family,
Your comments are just appreciated just as much as Idina's or any other member of the cast's. I saw Rent in NY this summer for the first time. I don't think I've ever been so moved before in my life. I cried repeatedly through out. I still do just listening to the soundtrack. As has been stated numerous times before, Jonathon's talent was immeasurable. His work has made such an impact on me, I'm doing a presentation on him for my Leadership class. Thank you, Larson family for posting on the site. We want to hear from you!

Posted by: Erin on 10/03/05 at 04:14 PM

I know this is probably the millionth comment, but I would just like to say that RENT is the most amazing musical I've ever seen. It's inspirational and touching. It brings tears and laughter to me every time I see it or hear the soundtrack. Thank you, so much for inspiring Jon like you did, because he was truly gifted, and I'm sure, truly missed. This show has inspired me to become a bohemian theatrical director, just like him.

Thank you, ever so much.

I just want to say that being introduced to the world that is RENT, I have fallen in love.
The company I'm with performed La Vie Boheme, Santa Fe, Rent, Will I?, One Song Glory, Without You and Finale B at a performance and being on stage singing lyrics with such a strong message behind them was increadibly moving.
During a rehearsal of One Song Glory, we bought a teacher to tears as he was so moved.

I cried during the trailer and am just looking SO forward to seeing the final product as I know it will be fantastic.

I just want to thank Jon, his family, the OBC and everyone that made RENT come to life, you have truly accomplished something great!

Love to all,

I have been a fan of the Stage version of rent and have thought about creating my own version of the Hit Broadway Show, but after seeing the trailer for the movie, I am amazed and Proud to say that If you LOVE the Broadway show, You WILL Enjoy the Motion Picture. The Level of detail that the film makers paid attention to is the most amazing part of this. I plan to see this movie. To the Larson Family, I am thankful that I got to Witness Jon's Play so beautilfully crafted into a motion Picture.

Dear Larson family,

At first, I was a tiny bit sceptical that the movie wouldn't do Jon's message, that he perfected through the stage production, any justice. Although hearing you endorse the film sets my mid at ease, and now I will be sure to see it.

I saw the original broadway production and I would have to say that it was truly the most amazing musical I had ever seen. For several years I have wished that they would make a movie out of it and finally they did. There are so many events in this film/musical production that I can relate to. It has been a big inspiration to my life as a gay man. Thank you.

In my Intro to Oral Communications class I have to do a comemorative speech about a person or event. I would love to do one on Jonathan and how he has touched millions of lives. Everytime I want to either have a good laugh or a good cry I pop in the soundtrack. Jon created the best thing ever and I am soooooo glad his work is coming to more and more audiences!!! He deserves all of this. If there is anything you want to share with me for the speech that would be really helpful. I found some websites as well. Thank you guys!!!

Dear Larson family,

I am still sorry for your loss of Jonathan. He was truly one of the most powerful musical score composers of all time. His edgy music has really hit my ears and I can never get it out of my head. Tick, Tick... Boom! is by far underrated. It is so amazing, and I'm just blown away every time I listen to these powerful notes and words he wrote. Rent is of course a masterpiece of all ages. Jonathan spent so much of his life doing what made him happy, writing music, and we were all blessed to have him inspire us. Thank you so much for being so involved, you truly are a loving, inspirational family

I wanted you to know how much your son has touched my life through "Rent." I have been forever changed by his vision and dedication. Through my own seemingly simple trials through my life, especially this past year (I'm 19... but I'm old for my age), his music has guided me, hurt with me, and healed me. I cannot express my gratitude to you and to Jon. But thank you.

I knew how devastated you were, but was so glad you had the courage and foresight to share his vision with so many. Thanks from all of us for carrying his torch for him so millions can see his amazing talent. It is a loving tribute that will last forever. You are the absolute best! Larayne Decoeur

To all of you amazing people who are a part of this beautiful and moving experience called RENT…

On my way to the theatre to see RENT for the first time, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Then, WOW! V. cool set, and LOOK! The band is on stage – SOOO COOL!
GREAT music! GREAT characters…so clever and witty…

Then, “one song, glory…” felt that in my gut, but the very second I heard the beginning of Life Support, I felt chills on the back of my neck, I felt tears burning in my head, and I was at the edge of my seat from that moment until the end of the show… It was amazing and poignant and cathartic and beautiful and I felt so very lucky to be in that theatre, a part of that unique experience. I was overwhelmed with emotion, hit at the very center of my heart. I’d never seen anything so real and so powerful.

Of course I bought the CD and when I got home I immediately made my husband sit and listen to it with me from beginning to end (he’s a really good guy). There’s no other way to fully appreciate the experience. Shortly after that evening, I brought my sister to the show, talked about it all the time, listened to the music (all the way through) all the time, used countless quotes from the show as daily inspirations for my students and me, and started making some people a little nuts. Oh well, what can you do?..

That was about 7 or 8 years ago. Even at that time, our family had already lost too many amazing people much too soon. RENT was one of the things that helped me to find peace at that time. Then, in 1999, an avalanche of events began that no one could have predicted. (Isn’t that how it always is, though?..) My cousin lost a battle with severe depression, cancer was found in my mother’s body, and one of my major arteries (iliac) became 90% blocked and ulcerated. My mother won her battle with cancer (Thank the LORD!) and the blockage was surgically fixed, but the damage that had already been done could not ever be undone. I lost the tips of three toes and many nerves in that area were/are damaged beyond repair. When nerves don’t get enough blood for an extended period of time, the body suffers permanent nerve damage along with perpetual nerve pain. Consequently, the last 5 years have been the hardest in my life. I’ve had to give up so many things I love, including teaching high school as well as teaching dance. I’ve had to make a lot of changes in my life that I never thought I would have to make, especially as a 30-year-old. However, during the very worst of it, the music and the stories of RENT really helped me make it through some really bad days. There were days that I didn’t even want to get out of bed- when the pain and depression were just too overwhelming for me. Then, hearing the music in my head or in the car, “No day but today!”; “Forget regret, or life is yours to miss!”; “…for people living with, living with, living with, not dying from disease,” all of it helped me not only get out of bed but sometimes even put a smile on my face and in my heart. I played it over and over and over again and let it all wash over me. Listening to your beautiful voices singing those glorious songs and honest lyrics motivated me to keep pushing onward.

So THANK YOU. Thank you. Thank you so much more than my words in this dorky letter can say. Thank you for putting your heart and soul into all that you do. Thank you for sharing with us, for sharing with me, a part of yourself. I feel so lucky to have been able to see RENT on the stage and now I get to see it again and again and again (etc., etc.,J…) in the movies! I PROMISE to continue to share the message, the beauty, and the blessings of RENT with as many people as I can. (And I also PROMISE to “MOO!” and get everyone within my proximity to “MOO!” along with me. J)

It’s interesting that the movie is coming out this year because it has only been recently that I have started to feel that I’m finally moving over the top of the mountain of the last 5 years (Over the moon? Maybe.). Don’t have much more to say other than I’m so very glad that I got the chance to tell you how I feel and how much I’ve been affected by the stories, the music, and the performances of RENT. You are all truly a blessing to everyone. Thank you so much. Thank you from the depths of my heart. God bless you and yours in all that life brings you.

“…There’s only now. There’s only here. Give in to love or live in fear. No other life, no other way, no day but TODAY!...”

God Bless,
Jenny

I think a message coming from the family means more than any other actor. I'm so glad you had such an active role in the film's creation. Jonathan's music touched many hearts, and I hope the movie does the same.

I think I'm going to cry. You guys are really sweet, especially since you helped make this movie possible in so many ways. As for how important the message is, I couldn't agree more. You know that RENT saved my life? I was so depressed before and even considered suicide a couple of times, but RENT changed all of that. Thank you so much. The world lost a lot of talent and a great man when Jon died. :( Anyway, thank you guys.

our loved ones live in us and so having heard from you was very similar to having heard directly from Jonathan. rent has been a special part of my life for 10 years, and because of it i have loved jonathan through it's music and performances. by sharing with us this masterpiece from his heart, mind and spirit he gave us a voice and a place to call home. by loving him and suupporting him you set the stage so to speak. thank you for whatever each of you has done to give him the inspiration and strength and even creative vision.
my favorite song in the play is one song, glory. ironically this play was his one last refrain and redeemed my empty life. in times of loneliness the sheer magic of the characters, music and memories of the performance was enough to energize me into change.
God bless you all. christmas bells are ringing...

But of course on the other hand all I really have to do is play "Seasons of Love" for the 452nd time and realize that I should live life to the fullest, not pass up any oppurtunities that come my way, and of course measure in love.
To all of you reading I say goodbye

Dear Larson Family,

First of all, your son was amazing and I am sorry for your loss. Secondly, his work has inspired many, including myself. I am so happy that RENT is FINALLY going to be put on the big screen. A lot of 'Hollywood" musicals don't carry the true spirit of the music and book, but from the trailor it seems that Mr. Columbus, the cast and crew have truly brought it to life once again. I first heard RENT's beautiful harmonies in 1997 via compact disc. I was hooked, and then had the privilege to see in staged in 1999...it changed my life. That was high school and I have since graduated college with a degree in musical theatre. I have seen RENT three times and hope to see it more, or one day have the chance to be part of the production. When I watched the trailer this morning (sitting idly at my part-time job) it brought tears to my eyes and goosebumps on my arms. It is truly amazing how touched I was, that this show still lives deep with in me. I can't wait for the world (and especially all of the "non-theatre goers) to see what Jonathan did. He brings to us a universal message that transcends time, through the voices of angels. Thanks for you message, I am happy to hear you are well.

Sincerely,

Tracy

I just want to say thanks for bringing Jonathan's show to the big screen so more people can fall in love with RENT and Jonathan. He is/was a genuine talent and the most amazing mind I have ever witnessed. His vision, his show is a true inspiration and has given me so much strength all through the years especially with the passing of my cousin last year who died shortly after a car accident where he was in a coma. The songs, the love in this show will live on as Jonathan will forever.

Posted by: Laura on 10/28/05 at 10:31 AM

You are the best. Although the actors are great, I think it's wonderful for you to post. RENT is truly an amazing show, I fell in love with it as soon as I walked into the Nederlander Theatre. Every other musical I've ever seen pales in comparison to RENT (sorry Idina, Wicked was great, but still not as good.) There is no way to describe RENT that shows its brilliance. All I can say is that I love everything about it and I can only hope that that is captured on film. Jonathan was a visionary and he will live on in all of our hearts.
Thank you for taking the time to post.

I have been a fan of "Rent" since late 1996. I am so glad that it's being made into a theartical release. I havent seen the play on Broadway since 1998 when I moved to Florida from Philadelphia. Definately, I will be the first one in line to see the first relase of this GREAT PLAY in theaters.

Rent kept me alive, literally, when I was sick two years ago. With my illness I suffered from an extreme eating disorder and depression. I listened to the CD everyday. For some reason I could actually get out of bed after I heard One Song Glory. Thank you for everything, and know that Jon is helping people everywhere, through his vision of RENT.

Why wouldn't we all want to hear from the people created & nurtured that which became the legend of"Jonathan Larson". In the 2 1/2 decades that my husband & I have been together, he has always given me crap about buying a soundtrack before I've left the theater. When we saw "Rent", he pushed ME out of the way to get the soundtrack!! This show literally changed our views about life and in the 8 1/2 years since we bought the soundtrack, we have played it so much that we had to replace it twice!! We have never been able adequetely articulate how special "Rent" is so we just ended up advising everyone to see it. Without fail, they have all come back to us having experienced the same "aha" moment we did. We will always be grateful for Jonathan's gift. We will be first in line on the 23rd, and can't wait until we can buy the DVD and watch it all the time!

Posted by: Trish on 11/01/05 at 02:18 PM

I work the broadway shows when they come through Rochester. Rent came through and stole my heart. The passion and love that was portrayed through the characters and the beautiful, heart wrenching music, there is none to be compared to it. I truly fell in love with the whole, well, since I can't put it into words, I proudly call myself a "Renthead." I cannot wait to see the movie, and will tell one and all to go see it as well. This is one of the very, very few movies I will see more than once, and, if ever out for purchase, will be first in line to buy a copy of the best ever show.

Thank you to the Larson family for your post. Your son had amazing vision and creativity, I am glad to see that continuing on and I cannot wait to see the movie on the 23rd. I also want to thank you for your work with the Marfan Foundation. I come from a family where this syndrome is very much a part of our everyday lives and it is good to see that through your tragedy there is more education being done in this area. Stay strong and celebrate the life of your son everyday!

It's really great to hear that Jonathan would've felt like the movie stayed true to his story. I was wondering about that. My little brother and I have sung along to the CD of RENT since he was 5 years old. We always do the whole show for my parents at Christmas. It's a tradition with us. Now maybe a whole new generation can feel the joy that RENT has brought to my family.

Posted by: Charlotte-Ann on 11/02/05 at 01:44 PM

Oh man. Where would an actor come from without such profound material as Johnathan wrote? Where would a director be without a vision from Johnathan? Where would I be without Johnathan's lyrics, music, and message?

I'll tell you the answer to the last one -- a lot more distressed than I should be. So... thank you. :)

I fell in LOVE with RENT,since Adam sung ONE SONG GLORY. It was Autumn, 1996, when I heard that song-MY first RENT song.
I liked Anthony Rapp in ADVENTURE IN BABYSITTING.
And Idina and Tyne Diggs are cute couple.
Can't wait til I seen OVER THE MOON scene. Idina and Tyne are funny in that scene.
I ALWAYS play ACT I CD/libretto of RENT EVERY Christmas Eve.
I'd love to play Maureen. She's kooky like Moi.
But I'm not Gay though.LOL.
Thanks Jonathan-And Thanks Al.Nan. AND Julie.
TAKE ME OR LEAVE ME is MY motto.

my first broadway show was RENT and I fell in love with and I personally think that your son's story must be told. I was over the moon when I heard that a movie was being about it. I Love Jesse L Martin and I have heard Idina Menzel sing on the Wicked Soundtrack and I think that with this cast it should turn out to be the biggest hit of this year!

Dear Julie, Nan and Al,
I don't know if you're still reading comments to your letter, but hopefully this will reach you eventually. I'm 21 years old, a student in Nova Scotia Canada and Rent has been a huge part of my left since I first heard about it when I was twelve. Sometimes when I think about it, it overwhelms me that I owe so much to a man that I didn't know, in another country, who didn't know me, and I wish so often and so much that I had the oppertunity to thank Jonathan personally for his brilliant work and Rent.
But I am so extremley pleased and honored to thank you for Jonathan, for being his wonderful family, for embracing the show with your hearts and all of us who love the show along with it. Thank you for holding on it its integrety above all, and insuring that the film will be true to what Jonathan had dreamed and imagined the show to be.
When I was 12, I was shy and lonley, very niave and I didn't know who I was or what I wanted to do with my life. I thought the girl who sat next to me in Study Hall (Blair) was a goddess because she knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life (be on Broadway), and had motivation, ambition and drive to accomplish a long list of goals. She had just heard the Rent CD two months before and had had a profound experience with it. She needed to talk about it with someone. She needed to share her bewilderment and astonishment and pass on the experience. I was so lucky that she chose me to shre it with.
Within months I had the Rent bible and the CD and Blair and I would talk about the show, dream about her someday being in the show, what it would be like to meet Idina, Taye, Adam, Antthony, Jesse and Wilson.. and I started to write stories about the adventures we'd have in NYC with the Rent Cast. Rent inspired me to write them and Blair encouraged me- and before long we had pages and pages of Rent adventures on paper. I realized that I wanted to follow in Jonathan's footsteps, I wanted to write something that would touch people's lives, the way that Rent had touched mine, and to change people's perception, to give voices to those who had been overlooked and express myself artistically. I wanted to be a writer. And within a year or so I had as much ambition, drive, confidence and motivation as Blair did. The two of us have been best friends ever since, forever connected by our love of this show and our respect, admiration and gratitude for Jonathan. He has changed so many lives... I know I can never thank him enough. Thank you for bringing him into this world.

I am absolutely estatic about RENT the movie... I have seen the play 7 times and still going strong!
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about RENT the movie playing November 11 only in L.A., NY and Toronto? I saw that on the website months ago but it doesn't seem like they are promoting it anymore...what's up?

Posted by: Kaitlin on 11/05/05 at 02:30 PM

I just wanted to say that I am sooo excited about this movie. RENT has played a major role in my life and I hope that it will now touch even more lives. Thank you for giving so many people the oppurtunity to expierience one of the best "Rock-Opera/Musical" in the world.

I've been a Renthead for some years now, (my 1st time was at the Nederlander in 1998), and have successfully "turned on" my children as well. We are all extremely excited for the movie, and so happy that the film will continue Jonathon's vision and message of love.

I can't even begin to tell you how much Jon's work, and RENT particularly, has meant to me. It has helped me through my own troubled times and I'm so glad that RENT will be able to reach so many more people! It's impact is immense and I'm so excited for this new venue! Alteast we won't have the sleep outside anymore!

I just want to thank you just like everyone else for bringing this wonderful show to the silver screen so it can touch even more lives. I have been a devout fan of RENT since 1996 and I don't ever plan to stop. Jonathan is a mastermind and his dream, his creation has touched not only my life but anyone who has ever seen it. It has gotten me through the worst times and the happiest times in my life. I know how it feels to lose someone so fast, too soon and I can say that the music, the message, the heart and passion of not only Jonathan but the cast and just everything about RENT has pulled me through. Jonathan will always be a legend and he deserves all the praise and love he receives. I also want to thank you for allowing us RENTheads to send our love and comments directly to you.

Thanks for your posting - as someone who lived in San Francisco in the 80's, lost a lot of friends, and has worked in the AIDS movement, I am happy to see the movie coming out but I have to admit that, even if the theatre is packed, it will feel to me like there are a lot of people missing who should be here

I am a pastor in the heart of the "bible belt" south. I know that many conservative evangelicals in this country get bad press for their views on the subjects that are dealt with in RENT but I want to say that your son had a view of what life is truly about. It is about celebrating community, about giving everything within you to love the people around you, regardless of past mistakes and future failures. Jonathan Larson gave us the greatest example of how it should be. Pain, joy, love, heartache, and celebration all lived together. If only more people could love first.....
Thank you.

I am also thrilled to read your comments, RENT is a priceless piece of work that still moves me to this day with it's powerful, soulful music. It is a gift I'm glad your son had the opportunity to share with us that will be treasured by myself and clearly many others for eternity.

I'm so glad y'all posted a blog! Your son's visions and ideas have helped me become the woman I am today. Jon and his works will live on forever into the hearts of future generations, but we all know it could never have been achieved without you, his family. Thank you again and my friends and I can't wait to see Jon's masterpiece on the silver screen!

Glad to hear that the movie is a reflection of the original play and Jonathans vision.

Your son's legacy continues to touch everyone who listens or sees RENT. I never met Jonathan, but I feel that I knew him.

He gives me hope in such a dark world.

Dear Larson Family,
Unfortuantely I am one of the new generation of Rent fans, but Rent has become one of the biggest things in my life. Last year my chorus teacher gave us a summarry of Rent and played us Seasons of Love. I went home and listened to the sound track, and since then I have been thinking about it almost all the time. then in July my friend and I went to the movies and we saw a trailer for Rent. I hadn't realized there was going to be a movie. Just sitting there, in the theater, I started to cry- the passion and love I saw just in the preview overwhelmed me. I haven't seen the musical, and I'll probably see the movie first, but Rent has changed my life forever. And hearing from you made me sure that this movie was awesome, and reading the comments I knew that there are tons of other people just like me, who have fallen in love with Rent, whether in 1996 when in first came out or five minutes ago, none of our lives will be the same. Rent conveys more emotion than any other musical or movie, and I know that somewhere Jonathon Larson is smiling because people are working hard to make sure that his dream comes true- just in a new medium.
Love to all,
Ellen

I saw RENT for the first time in new york city this past summer...and i now know what my dad had been going on about for the past 9 years. RENT has touched my life in more ways then you will ever know. Jonathan's message will live on for many more generaitons, he is truly an artist.

Posted by: Alyssa on 11/12/05 at 09:21 PM

I had sworn off musicals since the eighties in NYC as I found them all not alive or releveant enough for my tastes.

And last night I saw an advanced screening of RENT and was completely blown away. I was crying as I sat in my seat as I was touched beyond measure. It was not just the performances which were brilliant... it was the city that come to life. Living in LA now I miss New York even more now.

The pride you all must feel at the completion of this major work of art I hope is staggering. Did all the actors sing their own songs? If I had a voice like any of those...

I wanted to take a moment to thank all the participants for sharing their gifts and like any great work of art I am humbled and appreciative.

I came to love this show by first hearing 'Seasons of Love'. At the time, I had no idea what show it had come from and asked the local high school drama teacher. From that point on, I watched for it to come to a local theater, which it finally did about a year ago. I now listen to the entire sound track DAILY, and put myself right back into the audience. I love the music and cannot wait to go to the movies on 11/23. Thank you for keeping Jonathan's dream alive!

Thank you so much for sharing with us. I have seen the Broadway show twice and feel so touched by Jonathan's life and love. I cannot wait for this movie version of the story but know that the message RENT shares with its audience is so strong and compelling it will continue to move us forever. God bless and we're all there helping you keep his vision and message alive.

Julie - I just found out that a friend of mine is married to your nephew, Jared. What a small world.

I am SO looking forward to seeing this movie. I've been in love with the show since I saw it in NY. I was originally drawn to the movie because I'm such a huge fan of Adam Pascal, but I never looked to see who else was in the cast recording. Imagine my delight to find out that most of those people are in the movie version.

I wish your family well know that somewhere, Jon is smiling on this project!

Posted by: Cris K on 11/14/05 at 11:50 AM

I am very happy that the movie gods decided to bring back most of the original cast of RENT. I don't think it would've been the same without them. I didn't see the show in NYC...I saw the touring production when it came through Seattle a few years back where I lived until I moved back EAST. But Rent is this (our) generation's HAIR. It's passionate, it's about love and diversity. Rent is wonderful!!! Again, I'm glad they kept most of the original cast in tact...because stage actors always seem to get the shaft when it comes to a play or musical being transferred to film.

Posted by: Jeff on 11/14/05 at 12:34 PM

Your son touched so many lives with this piece of art. Thank you all for working to keep it alive and bring it to so many more hearts. The issues, the message, the soul of the work brings an era into definition...

... and many of our own lives. This work touched me at the darkest hour and gave me spirit to make it through. We all are here because of the power of his gift. And the gifts of the talented, blessed people who are coming back, ten years later to share with us again.

I cannot thank you all enough.

To the Larson Family and the RENT Cast,

I am truly greatful to finanlly get the chance to say thank you to Jon and everyone involved in the Rent productions. I first saw RENT at the age of 17 (1997)in LA and have been a RENT fan since that day. RENT was the 1st musical I had ever seen by a professional production company.
I wanted to say Thank You to Jonathan, the RENT Cast, the Larson Family, and all who have help in every production of RENT since it had started. This show has help be become the person that I always knew I was. I came out at a young age. I would not have been able to do this without the strangth the RENT gave me. Thank you to everyone for making it ok to be who you are. Gay, straight, black or white. You all have opened many new doors for myself and the community. Sorry for the lose of Jonathan too. Nice to have found you again. I immediately got gooses bumps when I saw the movie was coming out.
I'll never forget the night Jonathan told me someday I would see his name in LIGHTS in N.Y.
Little did I know that he would light up the whole world with RENT! Jonathans message carries on for us to cherish. God Bless, Kim in Fla.

Dear Larson Family,
Next week the movie RENT comes out and the sad thing is my 19 year old son Martin won't be here to see it. RENT was his life and his passion. He was a RENTHEAD and spread the word to everyone in his path in HighSchool and while he was in college studying Drama. He died in July of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy. His motto was always "No Day But Today" and lived that way until he left us. I am sure Jon was one of the first people he looked for in heaven. Thank you for making my son so happy during his short time on this earth. Love Camille

I just got the most fantastic news. My husband makes neon signs for a living and their company recently did work for 'The Historic SENATOR Theatre' in Baltimore, a 1939 movie house. As a thank-you to one of the installers, the owner gave a pass for two to tonite's Baltimore premier of RENT which is a $75/tkt benefit for Baltimore School for the Arts. I was interested but could never afford it. Well, my husband's friend gave him the passes. Not sure why, who cares! thank you, thank you, thank you !!! I will be taking my 15 yo daughter Emma who is a magnet acting student at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts. She's gonna flip! We have been so excited about the movie coming out. Two weeks ago,I took her to see 'tick...tick...BOOM ! ' which I think of as a prequel to RENT at The Mobtown Players and AB-SO-LUTELY loved it!
When I hear Jonathan's music, my heart fills with love, admiration and sadness.
I was thrilled to see that his family had posted here. Bless you, thank you, I hope you get some comfort knowing how much your son/brother is loved.

Dear Larson Family,
Today is the day that my son would be seeing the RENT movie. He died at 19- 4 months ago the night before a performance he was in of sudden unexplained death. RENT was his life for many years and was a major RENTHEAD. Today his friends from University of Georgia are coming to Marietta Georgia and they will all be there for Martin to watch the movie he waited all summer to watch. Thank you again for doing this and for the amazing son you had and believe me I know the pain you feel. Martins Mom-Camille

I saw the film in a preview and loved it. So true to the musical doing only what a film can do to add without being distracting.
I've told all my friends to see it and not see it alone.

Well done!

I saw RENT 2 years ago in New York and, like so many others, it changed my life. There is a passion inside me that was re-ignited after seeing RENT. After reading so many of these entries I was so moved to realize how many others have had the same experience. You must be so proud of Jonathan and the legacy that he leaves behind.

Thank you for the wonderful gift of your son, Jonathan. God bless you and your family.

Posted by: gayle on 11/24/05 at 07:48 AM

the story so far...

I come from a very musical family. My dad is a music teacher in one of the worst high schools in the city (yet maintains one of the best music programs in the board); my mom sings in a high-profile vocal emsemble and my sister is a professional French horn player. Needless to say, I had my share of musical influences and opportunities at home. I was an avid music and drama student at school and absolutely loved the stage.

However I still wasn't finding myself at all satisfied with my life, my goals, and my talents. Sure, I could sing and play piano but to what end? I wasn't helping anyone and I certainly wasn't bettering mine or anyone else's quality of life with it... I was in a rut.

Enter RENT. I was introduced to the music of RENT in highscool by two friends who were completely ga-ga over the soundtrack. I borrowed the CD(s) and wouldn't give it back; I sat there for the entire length of the soundtrack, reading along with the insert, letting it bring me to tears and overwhelm me with emotion. It was 8 years ago that I bought the CD for myself and haven't stopped listening to it since.

From a musical perspective, Jonathan is a genius. The lines, the phrasing, the raw emotion in the harmonies themselves said that this was a different kind of musical. My highschool drama teacher always hated musicals because he found them all to be "fluff"; sheer suggestions of what good theatre is. Except for RENT. RENT talks about real people in real communities dealing with real life. This is what I love so much about this show - it's something real in a medium that's so used to dealing with the surreal.

I'm now 24 and still keep the message of love, community and good spirit alive and try to portray that in my own music. I'm now a singer-songwriter and love to come up with different harmonies and unexpected modulations just because it's so much more interesting than what's out there now (my version of "fluff"!)

I want to simply extend a thank you to the Larson family for staying involved in Jonathan's legacy.

Jonathan Larson has not only influenced the heart, but has inspired the musician in me and I couldn't be more excited that his best work will be kept alive on stage and off.

Dear Larson Family,
I sat in a nearly packed theater last night. It was the first time I sat through a movie where not one person talked. I was so blown away and moved. I am so thankful for this musical and for such a beautiful film. From the bottom of my heart, I wish all of you many many blessings this holiday season and always.

After seeing over 300 comments, I doubt you will think mine much. I just wanted you to know that I am part of your new generation. I am 50.
All through their high school years my three kids sang the songs from RENT. I enjoyed their joy, but didn't understand it. Today, as part of our family Thanksgiving we went to see this phenomenal piece of musical theater! I understand your son/brother wrote script and music. WOW!! What a talent! I could hardly breathe through portions of this passionate play. I wish I had seen it on stage instead of the movie, but I must admit I never would have. I was previously convinced that there was no reason to spend high dollar on "homos". Well, if that had been what it was about, it still would have been worth it!!!!!! This was about believing in yourself, and believing in love because love is real.
I laughed at "Speak" everytime. I got tickled at Maureen being so full of herself. I cried for Angel, and for Tom. I got angry with Mark when he was feeling pulled to fit the mold of corporate America. I cried for the refound love of Mimi and Roger. I cried profusely at the end of the movie. My son had to hold me. I was overjoyed to have experienced this, and saddened to think my previous prejudices could have kept me from it.
I am grateful to you for having made the decision to share your son/brother's vision with me. I am your new generation. Thank you deeply.

As someone who has loved Rent for years, and was worried about a Rent movie, I wanted to tell you all (and well, everyone!) that I was blown away. What an amazing film! Chris Columbus did a spectacular job adding to the musical while not taking away from the amazing story. I completely agree that he did a perfect job with the movie 'Rent', and I will go see it again and again! Thank you Chris Columbus!

My oldest daughter had seen "Rent" on Broadway a few years ago, and we all went to see the movie last night. The movie was amazing! Loved it. My daughter told me the movie did the play justice. Angel's death was especially heart-breaking as it reminded us of all the family and friends we've lost to AIDS. Having lived in NY all of my life (just moved to FL 11 months ago), I can appreciate and relate to the struggles in one's community. The movie truly depicted life in NY. My biggest regret was not catching the play on Broadway.

It is the first time I have seen "Rent". Ever since I first saw the trailer last June, I was looking forward to it as much. I love the story! One of the best stories I have ever known. :)

I was waiting to here from you...I saw the very first showing in Florida and it's amazing...not just the movie itself but how Jonathan's message was brought out loud and clear. It was as loud as the music coming from the theater's speakers. This is wonderful...thank you for making the decision about the RENT movie...Jonathan was a genius. I'm sorry for your loss...but he did a great thing. Thank you.

I have been a Rent fan for many years and I saw the movie today and was so pleased the movie was true to the musical. It was really amazing and I hope it has the staying power of the musical...I know I will be going to see it again later this week and the CD is in my car player...I never tire from the music!
Happy Holidays and best wishes to the Larson Family...and thank you for this wonderful gift!

I loved everything about the movie. Ive listened to the music for years and I finally got to see the play this past February in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was wonderful. Everything just made more sence watching it live. But the film felt more personal. You can loose yourself in everyones different stories. It felt even more real. I was still affected by the movie after I watched it. I loved everything about it and I plan to go see it several times. And when it comes out on video, I will be the first one in line.

Posted by: Tosha L. on 11/28/05 at 11:36 AM

Dear Larson Family, Thank you so much for taking the time to share. I did not have the fortune of seeing the play, but I bought the CD and every time I listened to it, or would hear one of the songs in my head, it would stir up so many emotions. I am so grateful it was made into a movie. I saw the movie on the 24th, was numb the remainder of the day/evening, and the impact still remains with me. I bless the memory of your son and the legacy he has given us, and the strength and courage he has given me. It's so true, once you see Rent, you want to see it more and more, and "Live for today". THANK YOU!!

I must admit that this is my first time on this site. I would like to thank you for having a son that created this masterpiece, and thank you for bringing it to the big screen. I saw the rock opera when I was a sophamore in high school back in '99 along with many of the kids in my high school choir. It felt almost like a life changing event. We all left the theater with a new appreciation for life, as well as an obssession with rock opera. One of my friends and I actually got into an argument for who was going to do a speech about it for our Speech class. I'm now 21 and still in love "Rent". I was very surprised to hear that it was being made into a movie. I thought it was going to take 20 years to hit the big screen like "The Phantom of the Opera" did. I am glad it didn't! I am also excited that some of the oringinal cast is in the movie! I'm going to see it tonight...I can't wait!!!

November 23 changed my life. I went with a group of friends to go see this movie "Rent." just expecting to see another waste of money hollywood actor filled film. I practicly cried throughout the entire film. I've never been so touched by anything in my seventeen years of living. I had never heard of Rent before in my life, but I left feeling as though I were a part of it. Almost as though I knew every character personally, it wasn't just a movie/show. I wanted to reach out because I felt as though I shared those same emotions with each character. I almost immideately went out and bought the soundtrak because I couldn't get the songs out of my head. Two days later I was back at the theater because I had to see it again. I had to relive it just one more time. I even went back to school singing the songs while my friends nicely asked me to be quiet but I just couldn't my soul was overflowing with hope, and enlightenment, encouragement, happiness, and faith. The list goes on and on. My eyes began to tear, and one of my friends gave me a hug as she began to realize how much this movie touched me, and meant to me. I'm truly devastated I did not know about Rent sooner because it is the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

DEAR LARSON FAMILY,

I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm looking forward to it. The first time I saw the show was in the Fall of 1998 in London - my friend Khatidja and I hadn't gotten tickets ahead of time so we ended up getting 'standing room only' tickets - I didn't even notice we were standing once it started - it was THAT good! I've seen it 2 other times since (in Atlanta, GA and Knoxville, TN) and I've enjoyed it every time, though the show in London was by far my favorite. I often dance and sing along to the original soundtrack in my living room and can't wait to own the movie (I don't need to see it to know it's going to be good!)! Thanks for your blessings for this project! I think that the more people that can hear the message of this story the better!

Love and peace,
Andrea

Wow, all I can say it that it STUNNED me just like the play which I saw four times. It was an emotional roller coaster ride. I laughed, I cried, laughed and then cried again. You could go from crying to laughing to crying in a matter of minutes. I cried during "Will I lose". It struck me somehow. The expressions on all their faces was MOVING. But, when Angel died and Collins is singing the reprise of "Cover You". I just about DIED. Thank you Jonathon for such inspiring, moving, spiritual and heart churning music and words. This music, show and movie will be in my heart always and will be part of who I am and how I want to approach life. GOD BLESS YOU JONATHON!!!! .....no day but today....

i have seen the play many times and LOVED it!! i was wondering when this masterpiece would make its way to the big screen.. jonathon would have wanted nothing less. I've been a renthead for years, seen the original cast on broadway and these actors/actresses bring such life and realism to the stage/theater. Living in NY,we (New Yorkers) know the ups and downs of everyday living... whether it be financially, sexual preference, , diseases..etc.. This phenomonal screenwrite teaches you to keep your friends close, live life to its fullest and cherish what you have, for you might not have it tomorrow!! TO THE LARSON FAMILY: Thank you for letting jonathon be such an inspiration to all us old and new rentheads!! His legacy will live on 4 ever - -

I have seen part of the movie, although it was very musical it wasnt what I expected, actually I didnt like the music. Perhaps not seeing the play played a big part in that, however if things were different I would not participated in viewing this film. It is without a doubt that the film seemed to have very good actors and actresses in it. And there are those that loved it and good for them, nonetheless it just wasnt my cup of tea.....
Thanks for trying...

I first saw the show in Toronto about 8 years ago. It was gritty, profound and most importantly moving. It showed a new side to being gay, having an addiction and being HIV+. It had a huge effect on me. The movie is brilliant, especially having Adam, Anthony, Idina, Taye, Jesse and Wilson back. Rosario and Tracie earned my respect and love as well. Your son was an inspirational talent, and like so many others was taken far too soon. His legacy will live on. LONG LIVE RENT!!
P.S. Much love to the cast...especially Adam and Wilson!

Rent has been a huge part of my life for the past two years & has changed my life for the better, forever. I have yet yo see it on Broadway but I'm pleased to say that I saw the film version 15 times & every time was like seeing it for the first time. There is so much to take from Rent & I find myself learning something new & being touched in a different way every time I see it. The songs & the story of Rent will forever be in my life. Thank you & take care!

WOW!!

I saw the show and cryed like 3 or 4 times. I knew that Phantom of the Opera and other shows had come to movies and I was afraid that they were going to bring RENT to movies. This made me scared because I was afraid that the director would not do a good job of setting this AMAZING show to film. I saw the previews and I was overwhelmed with cold chills. I went to see it when it came out and LOVED it so much I saw it 2 times!!

I thank Jon for writing this show that can affect all people not just the BROADWAY crowd!! You all should be proud of him!!

RENT has meant so much to me, I fell in love with it from the start. I have lost so many close true friends and enjoyed it with the others that it seems a part of me. RENT has changed my life and given me a new outlook at some of the things life throws at you. Before seeing it on stage I had listened to the soundtrack over and over - knowing every word. I felt like I knew the players before seeing it even. God Bless your son and all the good his paly has brought to the world.

RENT is so amazing!! My husband and I have been RENTheads for years! He first introduced me to RENT in Muncie,IN for the off Broadway show at Ball State University. I love the feeling it gave me...No Day But Today!! I was at a point in my life where I wasn't sure what was next, I was afraid and alone. Jonathan's musical helped me to seize the day. Take hold and listen to my heart. My husband and I have been married almost three years. No Day But Today was the theme of our wedding. We now have a daughter, three months old, and she loves when we sing "Light my Candle" I have a feeling she will be a RENThead one day! Thank you for the movie. Beautiful message, incredible music, insightful story....and you spoke to me. I sing and have done theatre and dance...I enjoyed it for the craft and excellance of talent as well. My daughter, who is 17, sat on my couch and held my hand as it spoke to her. Powerful...can't wait to watch it with my son!

I hope this can bring some message of hope and love to the many that need it, from those who struggle day in and day out with these issues, to those who have no clue and struggle with their issues of self-acceptance by pushing the rest of us away and calling us names.

Thank-you

I'm only a teenager but I can connect with everything in the movie and I feel like this movie has touched me so much. Its hard to find really good movies or even good things in this world and just knowing that Rent is out there makes me feel so good. It shows compassion, love, and hope. I have recently seen the movie and all I can say is 'wow'. I love the idea and the music, it is truly amazing. I am now currently making plans to see the musical on Tour in Atlanta this June. I'm not sure how much this is looked at since it was posted in September of last year, but I was wonder if there was an address that I could mail a letter to one of the Larson family members. If anyone could help me with that it would be greatly appriciated. Thank you.

Dear Julie, Nan, and Al,

I just picked up my copy of the Rent DVD this week and I REALLY enjoyed watching the movie as well as all of the history--seeing all those pictures and footage of Jon brings back many good memories. I was a classmate of Jon's at WPHS, remember so well him playing tuba in band with "Uncle Al", but even more I remember when he soared through those wonderful Billy Joel songs on the piano, performed impromptu at every break opportunity. It was clear even then that he was destined to become a great success.

Bless you for carrying forward Jon's work and message, still so relevant today!

hello:

I was lucky enough to have worked with jonathan at Adelphi. I was in the cast of El Libro de Buen Amor and the original cast of Sacrimoralimmorality (I never opened in it due to an injury). I recently watched the Documentary that went along with the RENT movie DVD and was totally drawn in by seeing Traci Robinson, Nick Petron, Todd Robinson and Victoria Leacock. The world is blessed to have had Jonathan here and blessed to have RENT as his legacy.

MANY THANKS!

Dear Julie, Nan and Al

I cannot express to you what this show means to me now. I can see so much of my brother in this show. He died almost 3 years ago. I cant listen to some of this beautiful music without crying because it reminds me of him. When I hear "Your Eyes" I cant help from crying everytime. I can picture my brothers eyes. It isnt just for lovers, no this music goes beyond it's story.

Jon wrote the most powerful musical, in my opinion, of all time. I am so lucky to have the oppurtunity now to watch it whenever I want on DVD. I hadnt seen it before the movie, and now I cant believe I lived my life without this. The music alone touches my soul so deeply that it takes me minutes to bring my self back to some sense of normality.

I dont know if you'll ever read this, but I want to say thank you. This music inspires me to do something. It inspires me to be better and to not be afraid to dream and to live each day.

I almost feel like Jon wrote this for me.

I know that isnt the case, but what makes music lasting is when it goes beyond your ears and pierces your heart and soul and everyone feels like they had it written for them.

Again, I sincerely thank you. I can never say that enough.

Love,
Ada

Dear Julie, Nan and Al,

The movie just opened here in Manila, Philippines on the 29th of March 2006. While watching it I couldn't stop myself from singing along but was afraid to sing aloud fearing the other movie watchers might shush me.

After the movie, I contacted the theater management and suggested they have special "renthead screenings" where people can sing along. I got delighted the next day when I got a message from them saying they decided to make all last screenings of all days special renthead screenings -- and would be advertised in the newspapers.

I hope that brings more joy to those who want to participate singing and mooing along. My friends and I certainly did.

May Jon's message of love continue to touch people's lives.

Sincerely

J.P.

Truly, No Day But Today is a mantra we can all utilize and live up to, not only memoralizing Jon, but each of our 525,600 minutes! Thank you for continuing this, his legacy and bringing to those who cannot get to the theater. Ok. So when my friend Chloe told me about RENT, I was like, Sure, right, it's great, but it's just like any other movie. But then i saw it, and I'm like, Whoa! The great singing, the great music, and the wonderful characters. Now, I think I'm more obsessed with it than she is! if you haven't seen RENT, then go to the closes movie rental store, and BUY RENT! I GUARANTEE you will fall in love with it. i know I did. So see RENT TODAY. Like RENT's slogan, there's NO DAY BUT TODAY. Bye!
