*cries* It's beeeautiful...I can't wait for the soundtrack! I'm dying to hear La Vie Boheme.

I love it!

I love the new sound for the music. It's got everything they were going for when recording for the movie. I read that the cast wasn't very pleased with how the OBC recording turned out so I'm assuming they're loving this one. It sounds amazing and I CAN'T wait for the soundtrack to come out. I'm buying it like--that day. I wish there were more clips like Take Me or Leave me, or RENT, What You Own, and all my other favorites--pretty much the whole album! But it's great!

I think that overall it was really good, but "Out tonight" sounded very digitalized
Posted by: Shilo on 08/22/05 at 07:11 PM
Does this mean the limited release is cancelled?
Posted by: Mat on 08/22/05 at 07:21 PM
You'll see sounds kind of lazy, but I love Life Support and Will I. Santa Fe has been greatly improved, and I love Rosario's voice on Out Tonight.
Posted by: Brandon on 08/22/05 at 07:26 PM
I agree about Life Support. That was supposed to be a bittersweet song to begin with and the change in tempo kind of made it less so in my opinion. Personally, I don't think Adam Pascal sounded nearly as agressive as on the OBC stage recording, and that kind of threw me off. But I did think Rosario sounded great, and I'm not saying the changes with Adam's stuff was bad. I htought Jesse sounded great in Santa Fe. I just wish we had some clips from La Vie Boheme! Pretty please?
Oh, and Tracy sounded great in Tango: Maureen. I just wish we could hear a little Idina!
Posted by: Alexis on 08/22/05 at 07:31 PM
I totally loved the little peeks of the songs, I went back to my CD's of the Original Broadway Cast to hear the full songs!! I can't wait to hear the full soundtrack, thanks!!!
Posted by: JC on 08/22/05 at 07:34 PM
Anthony and Adam sound great! I wish that they didnt make those changes though. Tracie does a really good job on tango too!! Rosario sounds amazing as well!! I can't wait for the official soundtrack!!

*Finally* I get to hear Rosario Dawson's voice, erm should I say really sultry?? She actually sounds okay! Today 4 U and Santa Fe sounded really great. But I noticed You'll See lacked energy (well, Taye Diggs sounded really conceited on the original recording!) but still sounds okay.
Oh well, I understand there will be a LOT of comparisons with the original broadway recording. But they all sound really good. Yeah, there were tempo changes but I'm not really going into detail on that!
Can't wait for the soundtrack AND the movie, nonetheless!! :D
Posted by: Jessica on 08/22/05 at 08:33 PM
I think it sounds awesome!! Rosario and Tracy sound amazing, and so does everyone else. I can't wait! I wish we could have heard Idina though. :)
Posted by: Kristyn on 08/22/05 at 09:42 PM
YES! Wow, I feel so much better knowing that Rosario can sing and totally pull off Mimi. Tracie, we already know, sounds amazing. Someone said it above, and I wanna ditto this times 1,000,000: let's hear some Idina!! Adam sounds much more mature and older than in the OBC, which is bound to happen in 10 years, but he still sounds amazing as Roger. I can't imagine anyone else in that role. Of course, this may be a bias since I think his voice is drop dead sexy.
Anyway, back to the clips. I love the new sound!! I can't wait to add this soundtrack to my music collection. Keep it up!! I am getting more and more excited the closer it gets to 11/23!
Posted by: Sk8inglioness on 08/22/05 at 09:54 PM
I was a little afraid, and still kind of am, but hopefully they will grow on me and I can learn to love them. And Jesse L. Martin was astounding. Anthony Rapp, too, he sounded just as good as on OBC. I really really want to hear La Vie Boheme, just to see if I'm surprised as much as I was for these songs.

I LOVED IT!!!
When returning to a work like RENT, or any theatre/movie that is being adapted to the stage/screen or even re-done/revived, you have new intentions, motivations, a new arch, new ideas on the characters, and so on.
I think the way the actors portrayed their characters on stage worked for them at that time. Now they are older, more experiaced in life and that will reflect in the performances. It will make the characters stronger. For example, I always thought the character of Roger was a little whinny, kind of self pitying, but the clip I heard he sounded more lost, desprate for life, a want for something new...it works.
Though, the production of the movie was done with the fans in mind - which I appreciate - the movie was not done for us. It was done for the community and nation at large. What makes it all exciting is that we get to see RENT with new eyes (Chris Columbus) in a time that is not like the mid-90's.
The real question is will the world we are in today get the message? Is it still pertinent? I say yes, but we will have to see.
Posted by: ~damian on 08/23/05 at 12:17 AM
sounds AMAZING!!! i can't wait for this to come out!!! but what about Over the Moon??? and i agree, Out Tonight sounds a bit strange... other than that i loved it!! it's different yet keeps the familiar Rent spirit... wanna hear Idida though!!!
Posted by: dawn on 08/23/05 at 03:36 AM
Yes there were changes, some that might not make sense right now, but I think that we have to hear it in context when we either hear the complete songs or see how they fit with the style of the movie.
Also, what's with the new release date?? I can't believe it! I guess all of our countdowns have to be reset! lol
I'm still really excited though, and I can't wait for the soundtrack and the movie.

After listening to the clips over and over and over again I'm really happy with them! I think whenever we're used to hearing something one way for so long, when you hear a different version all you hear are the changes. It makes it sound wrong or something. Luckily, we'll have a month to get used to the differences before the movie.
Rosario sounds amazing. I think I'm really going to like her as Mimi.
I know Idina fans are nuts, and you probably just want to see them squirm by not putting her clips up, but as a non-psycho I would love to hear what she sounds like now. You can't leave Maureen out!
Posted by: Juliet on 08/23/05 at 05:34 AM
Thank you so much for the clips! "Will I?" sounds so amazing, and I am very impressed by Tracie on Tango: Maureen. Why does everyone sound so depressed on "You'll See" though? Let's see some La Vie Boheme with Mr. Rapp next!
Posted by: Jordan on 08/23/05 at 05:43 AM
Yeah, why'd you have to change the date? I was going to drive up to NYC with my two best friends to see the movie on my birthday, 11/12. It was going to be great. Grr, I guess you guys just don't have your karma in line with mine or something.
Posted by: alexis on 08/23/05 at 05:52 AM
oh, and one more thing...did anyone else notice that they used the wrong lyrics at the end of "Life Support"? On the OBC recording, after Gordon sings about reason says he should've died three years ago, they start at "No other road, no other way...", they don't go through the whole "credo". Sorry, that just bugged me.
Posted by: alexis on 08/23/05 at 05:59 AM
Amazing! Simply Amazing! I knew Rosario would sound great. She was good friends with the late Aaliyah (she appeared in the music video, "I Miss You") and she was on the album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" by Outkast! Everyone else sounds great too! I really wanted to hear La Vie Boheme...and I can't wait for the movie!
Posted by: Vodka on 08/23/05 at 07:48 AM
The songs sounded good. Rosario was great on "Light My Candle" but I was a little disappointed with "out tonight." It just wasn't passionate or desperate enough. Hopefully it'll sound better in the theater.
Posted by: Ali on 08/23/05 at 07:49 AM
i'm personally very happy with the everywhere release on the 23rd. i didn't want to read everything about the movie from people who live in NY, LA, and Toronto before i even got to see it. thanx :-)
and i love the clips, thank you! some of them do sound a bit odd but i'm sure they will be wonderful on the soundtrack and in the movie and grow on all of us.
Posted by: Lianna on 08/23/05 at 08:07 AM
Would you guys give it a chance, maybe they changed life support to make another day better, Remember its a movie and must apeal to a broader audience so maybe you'll see boys was suppose to start out sad so it could end happier.
Posted by: cam on 08/23/05 at 08:34 AM
well, there goes my big plan to see it at midnight in the city.

Posted by: Christina on 08/23/05 at 08:56 AM
I'll admit, at first I was likw, WTF? This blows! It's slow, it's all synth-ed out and is that even Adam singing??
But, I listened to to a few more times, and it all sounds good, it's just different. Very different. (OSG...gah! o_0)
I think I was just expecting to hear the OBCR, ya know?
But I do like the new stuff, especially 'Will I?' and 'Out Tonight'.
Posted by: Amanda on 08/23/05 at 10:11 AM
im annoyed with the release date change..
the whole 'college kid' demographic may be lost.
it will be harder for students to see the movie for they will be traveling home for break that day/ weekend and might not have time to get to the movies. many people i know already had planned groups to travel to ny to see the midnight showing for the non-holiday weekend, and now might not even get to see it till weeks later. if opening thanksgiving weekend helps more people see the movie then thats great, they should just know that they may be losing a large chunk of movie goers in the process. so i hope they have a good reason for doing so.
Posted by: s on 08/23/05 at 10:14 AM
I love the new versions of the songs. Glory sounds AMAZING. I wish there were clips of Rent and What You Own and La Vie Boheme because those are the three greatest songs.
So glad a clip of Idina was not put up. I love the webmasters goal of pissing off her fans. It makes my day. But geez you can live without a clip of Over the Moon. Have SOMETHING suprise you when you go to the movies, just to see her of course.
But as a Rent fan I am very excited to see these songs in the film. Can't wait till November 23rd!!
Posted by: Di on 08/23/05 at 10:28 AM
I can't see the movie opening weekend, I'll be stuck with the family in North Carolina... I guess I'll see it the next week when I get back to NYC.
Posted by: Lea on 08/23/05 at 10:47 AM
Wow, it's a bit different from the broadway sound, but so far it sounds great! Rosario, great job, a wonderful Mimi, I think.
Posted by: Annie on 08/23/05 at 10:48 AM
I didn't get the sense that the film is not going to be released first in NYC and LA on the 11th...but that it will open *wide* on the 23rd. Am I wrong here?
Posted by: ruth on 08/23/05 at 11:22 AM
Wow...well that just killed a lot of my enthusiasm to see the movie...I don't like the changes. The background for almost every song takes away from each one. One song was still good...But altogether, not happy.
Posted by: Kim on 08/23/05 at 11:45 AM
I must admit...I'm not too thrilled about the new soundtrack from what I've heard thus far! The music sounds like it's all coming from synthesizers rather than a live band; which really sucks. I think they tried too hard to make too many changes and I'm worried that it's going to turn-off non-RENTheads. Other than that though, I have no complaints, LOL! The singing sounded great and I'm Rosario Dawson's newest fan...she is one sexy mofo, ha-ha! I'm still gonna buy the CD and see this movie a thousand times; I'm just concerned about the changes. I guess you could say that I'm "set in my ways" and I hate change? Anyway, as far as the release date being changed goes...I'm kinda dissapointed because it means I have to wait almost 2 more weeks now. But the good news is that my birthday is on November 24th and my 1st child is due the same week. So I know what I'll be doing for my birthday. I think it's safe to say that this will be the best birthday I'll EVER have!

I just bought the CD from the original Rent - I am not a real Rent head, but I have to admit I love what I am hearing, everyone did a great job, can't wait until 11/11 - 23, 2005
Posted by: wilma on 08/23/05 at 12:32 PM
I don't understand the whole "leave Idina out" thing. We wouldn't make such a big deal if we got fair portions of Maureen!
And yes, somebody should really clarify the whole release date confusion...I had a trip booked to NYC for the 11/11 opening and that would really mess things up. = (
Posted by: MB on 08/23/05 at 01:12 PM
everything sounds amazing! it's different, but in a good way. my only problem- i wish i could have heard idina! :)
Posted by: megan_m on 08/23/05 at 02:09 PM
I'm glad for the changes! When we all go buy the record, do you guys really want to just listen to a copy of the OBC soundtrack?
I love how all of their voices have developed. There are downfalls, yes, like sounding much older and things. However, who better to take the music and make it edgier than the OBC? I'm proud that they are able to do that after all these years. They know more about the music than anyone, and I'm glad to hear how great they sound. I agree, however, that "Out Tonight" didn't thrill me like I expected it to. It's one of my favorite songs, and I hope that the clip doesn't do it justice. Rosario sounded great on "Light My Candle", so we all know she has a good voice. Does she have that edge that Mimi does, and the rhaspy part in her voice that made Mimi so sexy and unique?
Guess we'll find out November 23rd.
Posted by: Amara Offhaus on 08/23/05 at 03:06 PM
I bet if these new tracks were in the origianl broadway cast recording instead of the OBCR..... everyone would have loved it! As such, it is not! Adam sounds like a frog, Taye sounds flat, and Rosario sounds like a computer! However, I am willing to bet that it will all work in the movie! It will enhace the emotion and will be fine! This is the recording that everyone will relate to RENT! So dont fret.... It's all good!
Posted by: Dhiraj Chand on 08/23/05 at 03:11 PM
Alright guys, we gotta keep in mind that we've all been listening to the OBC recording for years now (I've personally had to buy 5 copies because I keep wearing them out) and it's going to be different. I think the main reason for Adam's voice change in Glory is that he's acting. He's supposed to sound like he's breaking down in that song and I actually think it sounds better than in the original...
I am acutally only concerned with one track: You'll See. Benny sounds sleepy... but we gotta wait to see it in the context of the film. Rosorio sounds beautiful and the orchestrations of all of the songs have greatly improved.
I've actually stopped listening to the OBC album because I don't want to compare them. It'll be different and I've come to accept that, as should the rest of you!
Lets make this a box office smash hit!!!

I basically liked what I heard, wish I got to hear something with Idina though.
Really really not happy if the limited release is cancelled since I booked a flight to see it already and I can't cancel the tix without a fee.
:(
Still, I love Rent!!

Can I just say that I'm totally pumped for this soundtrack? I started listening to it and wanted to have a small party, just for the demos. I think this is going to be awesome, and I love...well, I pretty much love everything. Any chance we can find out WHEN the soundtrack comes out? Before or after the movie?
Posted by: Kristin on 08/23/05 at 04:26 PM
Haven't been on here in a while- loading up on all the new stuff that's been posted...exciting! Two main points:
1) The sound clips: Of course they're going to take any die-hard OBC-RENT fan by surprise, but for me, it was an especially *good* surprise- different, but good-different! The originals have all grown and changed, which revamps it with only that- plus, I'm getting more and more excited about Rosario and Tracie- I'd heard Tracie in the trailer, and adored her, but I hadn't heard anything of Rosario until now- and I'm thrilled to say I love her too. Yes, different from the original Mimi- but if everyone played/sang the part the same way, what's the fun anymore? My enjoyment of "Light My Candle" even took *me* by surprise. :)
2) "The film will be released everywhere on November 23"- does that mean EVERywhere??... I live in Paris, and am eagerly awaiting its arrival here- whenever that may be- because I'm not sure if I'm going to get a chance to go to the States when it comes out...it would be a blessing if it opened in Europe then too! But, I'll be patient if it isn't, because- this is kind of a comment to everyone who is disappointed about their plans- IT'S MORE THAN WORTH WAITING FOR! Just being able to see this Rent movie made at all is fabulous, and I know everyone's put more work and effort into it than I could imagine. So, this is also a gigantic THANK YOU to the whole cast and creators and, well, Jonathan Larson, who brought the whole thing to life in the first place.
Alright, enough out of me. I just wanted to say thank you for all of this, in general, and also, my much less mature comeback of, you think you have to wait; your plans have been ruined? Hey. Patience. I could air-mail you some from France. ;)
~Molly (who, as she types, is sitting in her Broadway-shrine of a room incl. Rent poster & playbill(s!) up on the walls. Talk about Renthead!) ((PS What happened to the effect of the "enter" key? Sorry this is just a huge block of text)
Posted by: Molly on 08/23/05 at 05:17 PM
even "hedwig" had changes that i wasn't crazy about at first hearing, but ended up loving every minute of the film...."hed" doesn't come close to my love for RENT - but the movie versions always seem a bit different. i'll end up loving it!!!
Posted by: dc on 08/23/05 at 05:17 PM
It's... weird. I'm so used to the original tracks, but I like a lot of these, especially "Santa Fe". "Seasons of Love" sounds brilliant, but I'm not sure I like the extra backgrounds on "One Song Glory" and "Today 4 U". I love Tracie and Anthony in "Tango: Maureen", though.
Also... This may be just me, but "Will I?" and "Life Support" both sound sort of unnatural, like everyone was singing along to a metronome or something... o.O
Whatever. I'm still going to see the movie in costume, and when the time comes, I'll still be singing along. WOOT.

The new soundtrack sounds AWESOME!!! Though I will admit that we are so used to hearing the Original, so this one does take a little getting used too. Also, I believe that the actual album itself will sound better than these Online Clips because it will include the entire version of the songs and professionally done. Thanks to the entire crew for these updates; Keep them coming!!

They all sound amazing!! I'm impressed by Rosario =)
Posted by: Shannon on 08/23/05 at 05:47 PM
I think the release date change was for the wide release. The limited release for LA and NY will probably still be Nov. 11 and then it opens wide later. I remember reading that somewhere else. At least I hope that's all still the same.
As for the songs, I agree with many of you that You'll See sounds very lazy. I also think that Roger's voice is missing that edge that Adam had in the OBC. But he still sounds great. I am really surprised with Rosario as Mimi. I think she sounds great and I think she's going to do a great job as Mimi. I love the changes to Santa Fe! Will I sounds great as well.
Please add more clips!!! I want to hear Idina! Let's here Without You, Take Me or Leave Me, Your Eyes, La Vie Boheme!! WE WANT MORE!
Posted by: Jesse on 08/23/05 at 06:20 PM
HALLEJIAH!
I get it!
Rosario sounded pleasantly different, but the cut you You'll See before I could really hear Taye!
What I heard of the voices I loved, but the percussions sounded a bit phony, like they just added in the percussions to finish the tracks quickly.
Santa Fe's still good, but different.
Change is different. Not better, not worse, but good!
Posted by: Nicole on 08/23/05 at 07:55 PM
EEEEEEE!!!! That was AMAZING! Thank you thank you THANK YOU! For that! I got up and danced to it! PLEASE post more! Love it!!
Posted by: Chelsea on 08/23/05 at 08:34 PM
I loved Will I !! I hope they add some more clips soon. I kinda had mixed feelings about Roger's voice. I'm super excited for the movie on 11/23!!
Posted by: Melissa on 08/23/05 at 08:36 PM
Goodness gracious!!! Chill out, fellow Rentheads!!!
I'm a fan of the show AND the OBC soundtrack like the rest of you. However, I think the movie soundtrack sounds excellent as well. I even cried when I heard the excerpt of "Seasons of Love"...of course, I cry everytime I hear that song!!!
I understand the excitment over the film and thrill of seeing (most) of the OBC performing. I, for one, never experienced the show with the OBC, so when I heard most everyone was returning for the film, I swooned with joy. Through years of listening to the soundtrack, I feel like I've come to know the characters; I love them, I know their quirks and eccentricities. Having seen the show live (not the OBC, with nevertheless a VERY talented cast), I sang along the whole time (quietly) and cried and laughed, and of course, mooed. =)
I think we all had/have expectations for the movie. Some will be met, some will be exceeded, and others might not even come close. However, we need to remember that RENT is about artists. The show is performed by artists and the movie was created by artists. We need to respect the decisions made by all the artists involved, even if we don't agree with them.
If this film was moment-for-moment a repeat of the Broadway show, it wouldn't mean as much to the fans. Theatre should only be experienced live; to view a work of theatre on tape cheapens the very soul of the theatre.
I'm only guessing that the reasons the voices sound so different from the OBC recording is that this is the *film* soundtrack, not a broadway recording. Film allows us to see and hear things much more closely than we could in the theatre. If the soundtracks sounded exactly the same, why on earth would anyone purchase the film soundtrack when the broadway soundtrack sounds exactly the same? Or vice versa?
Fans, calm down! I don't think that we have anything to worry about. Sure, it sucks that the release date was pushed back; I for one was disappointed (However, now I don't need to skip my classes on the 11th to be sure I'm one of the first to see the movie!)!!! But, we'll see a powerful, emotional film and I have no doubt that we'll all be as touched as we were from the very first moment we saw RENT on stage.
Posted by: Angie F. on 08/23/05 at 09:01 PM
I'm pretty content that they can still rock on after what 9-10 years? I knew there would be changes, but we have to adjust to them and keep in mind that this is NOT the same as the OBC soundtrack! It would have been nice to hear Idina, yes, but in general it would have been nice to hear more altogether, especially Act II. NJ is waiting for 11/23! Keep up the amazing work!<3
Posted by: Rachel on 08/23/05 at 09:07 PM
I think Rosario and Tracie sound fabulous!!! I have to admit I was a little nervous about the changes, but I love them! I think Rosario is a huge change from the OBC, but I definately think she's a change for the better! Tracie is also completely amazing, and I especially love that she is a RENThead!!! I love the changes to some of the other songs too. I can't wait for the soundtrack!! I think all the cast sounds fabulous, and I agree about the harder OSG, I think it sounds even better now (though anything with Adam Pascal is bound to be fabulous). I also wanted to say that Taye and Rosario look amazing in EW.
Much love to everyone!!

We will never have the same feel in the movie as we did in the show. That being said, the new sound... the movie... will be amazing. We will be able to feel so much more thru the visuals but not thru the vocals. Which kinda sucks because Rent is...well.... RENT. 'nuff said. But Rosario....her Out Tonight sounds great. It's just not Daphne. Daphne was my favorite in the original cast. (well her and Wilson). and i think people are going to be comparing her to Daphne left and right, which just isnt fair. Theyre two different people, and in many ways playing a sort of different character. Same with Tracie as Joanne. I personally think shes incredible. Her Tango:Maureen is....wow. and seasons of love couldnt have been better...
So-- cast.. if you actually read this... im amazed, as always at your AMAZING ability in everything you do.
And fans-- get ready. This movie is going to be the best ever.
Posted by: David on 08/23/05 at 09:52 PM
"Tango: Maureen" sounds great. Though, I wish there was a clip for "La Vie Boheme."
Why is the release date getting changed again? I live in CT and I was going to try and go to NYC to see the movie on the 11th... oh well. It doesn't really matter. At least now I can just go to a theater here and see it.
Posted by: Erica on 08/23/05 at 09:58 PM
Wow. As someone who has listened to the original cast recording from beginning to end hundreds of times, I have to say these new tracks sounded rather 'awkward'at first. The new synth sound works, though it lacks that wonderful raw edge that I love about the original. However, the OBC is now a decade old. Recording technology has since greatly improved. Expect a crisper, clearer, multi-demensional sound.
'One Song Glory' - Adam Pascal didn't suddenly lose his talent. Don't judge this one til you see it on screen.
I don't know what they did to 'Today 4 You'...bongo drums maybe? In contrast to the other tracks, this one has lost it's original dance club synth beat. It sounds interesting and I can't wait to see Wilson shake his booty :-)
'Tango Maureen' sounds great. Tracy and Anthony's vocals are excellent.
'Light My Candle', 'Out Tonight' - Daphne Rubin-Vega's voice is etched in my head and it will take some time to adjust to Rosario's new, more sultry sound. I don't think 'Out Tonight' is as bad as some of you have described it. Dawson's vocals are not as off-the-wall as Vega's but still very tight.
'Santa Fe' - Jesse is nothing less than a genius.
None of this is awful. It's just new. It isn't a stage musical anymore. It's on film. These songs won't come to life until we see and hear them on the big screen. Hang tight everyone. I still have faith in this movie. You should too!

According to www.itunes.com, www.talkingbroadway.com and www.amazon.com, the RENT movie sountrack will release on Tuesday, Spetember 27th, 2005. 2 months before the movie! It will have 28 tracks and according to itunes (and only through itunes) exclusive features and tracks. Now the release dates are always subject to change, as we all already know with the movie.

you guys are out of your mind to be booking plane tickets and things to go see the movie somewhere. release dates change ALL THE TIME for a variety of reasons, you just probably never followed a movie as closely as this one. stop booking plane tickets, take all of your friends and family to your local theater on 11/23 nationwide to go see it.

Again I will say that as Adam's number one fan in the mountain west/ Utah, I was disappointed with One Song Glory mainly because I want the world to hear his powerhouse voice. I do understand that the song is from an emotional scene, but he rocks on that song in the OBC and people unfamiliar with him should hear him BELT IT!
I ADORED Jesse's additions to Santa Fe and am sad to say I agree that Taye didn't sound as arrogant as Benny ought to. Tracye rocks. Anthony always is great. Idina, well we don't know yet, but then again we do....she always kicks a**. Wilson's voice sounds deeper but you know it's him and he's great. And Rosario pleasantly surprised me, I'm actually at odds with myself over which version of LMC and Out Tonight I like better, lol.
My last observation is that while I understand that changes had to be made, I don't feel that toning songs down was needed. This cast is awesome, the story is awesome and part of what makes the story stick with people forever is the music. Keep the music as close to what has moved people to love this play for 9 years, or subtly improve on them as you did in SOL and Santa Fe. Nothing else is needed. It's still early yet, think about it.
Much RENT love to all,
Cassandra

well, i'm sure it will all work with the film (vs. a live performance) - think of the differences between Chicago film soundtrack, and the Chicago bway recording.
jesse martin is so great, and i'm sure adam's sound works well as a character development choice, but i really really really hope the slow solo guitar is still there in the first few measures of the song. that would SUCK if they added the percussion from the onset.
for me personally the highlight was Sante Fe, and the low was Today 4 You and Glory. But we have no idea until we see it all together.

The first time I heard the clips, I wasn't so much disappointed as I was surprised to hear changes in the music. But then I listened to it over and over, and now I love them! I listen to them all the time and welcome the changes, so that when I buy the movie soundtrack, it won't be like listening to 2 soundtracks that are carbon copies of each other! I think in the setting of the movie, these songs will bring the same feelings to us as it did that first time in the theater. "Life Support" and "Seasons of Love" still make me cry, just listening to them. So I'm really excited to hear the rest!

Does this mean that La Vie Boheme isn't on/in the soundtrack/movie?
Posted by: Dana on 08/24/05 at 05:05 AM
Wow. I like it. I really like how they made a new version of this for the movie. Don't get me wrong, I love the OBC Soundtrack too, but this is really good. Rosario and Tracey are totally amazing. I was a little worried since I never heard Rosario sing, but now I know it's gonna be good!
Posted by: Jazzy M on 08/24/05 at 05:23 AM
I can't see why in the world alot of people are unhappy with this - we had to expect changes! (I love you all to death for not tampering with "Seasons of Love", though.
When I first heard "Light my Candle" and "Out tonight" I was surprised - I guess I expected her to sound more like Daphne - so I was surprised to hear she sounded so different - not to suggest it was bad, it wasn't. I was actually pretty happy! Rosario, you have officially squashed all my doubts. You'll be an amazing Mimi!
I feel the need to second everyone else here - as much as we love the clips, and thank you so much for giving them to us, we want Idina!
Posted by: Grace on 08/24/05 at 05:24 AM
I quite agree with Tom, a tad of it does sound synthasized. It does sound different, but what could I expect after 10 years? I cant wait too get it, but would really love a live studio recording.
Posted by: Art on 08/24/05 at 05:27 AM
I think La Vie Boheme is in the movie, becuase they mentioned something a few months ago on here about filming it.
I'm going to have to agree with all of you. I posted a very cynical comment here earlier about the clips and then I did a very obsessive thing: I actually sat down with the OBC recording and COMPARED, word for word, the clips to the original recording. And I have to tell you that I actually like Rosario's voice better than Daphne's (Please do not tar and feather me!) And the other clips are great too. I guess you just have to look at them on their own and now replay the OBC recording in your head as you're listening to them to nitpick everything.
I still love "Out Tonight" with Rosario and even though "Glory" does sound a little more cut-off and not as mournful, it's not terrible. "Today 4 U" wasn't my favorite song in the first place, so it's not killing me to hear the changes. And "Santa Fe" still sounds incredible. I think this version of "Seasons Of Love" is beter than the original. Just...we'll have to see the movie to make a judgement. but in the meantime, more clips would be really great *puppy dog eyes*.

Well its definitely a different sound. But its good-- in osme of the songs you can see how the actors have progressed as artists over the years.
I'm v. excited.
I especially loved life support. Wayne Wilcox(who is playing Gordon)has a great voice for the role. He was recently in The Light In The Piazza and was on Gilmore Girls(which i love) but i'd never heard him sing and I was scared to see what he sounded like not pcituring him having a deep remorseful type voice which is important for Gordon to have. But in this clip he really nails it and i think he and adam brought the song to life.
by the way in you'll see i think they changed who sings certain lines--in the show its collins that sings happy birthday jesus. in this recording i could have sworn it was anthony rapp singing that part.
i'm very impressed with Ms. Dawson's voice.
Ok so its different--I'm open to change.
I can't wait.

I was shocked by the changes at first, but I have come to like the differences for the most part. I don't like the synthesized music covering up some of the singing, but with that said I think the other changes will add to the drama of the movie. Although I love the sound of the original Glory, I believe Adam's voice in the new version makes it a lot more believable that he is depressed. I love Rosario in Light My Candle, a sexy change, yet she kept my favorite parts of the song the same. Tracie of course sounds amazing, we all knew that the first time we heard the new Seasons of Love. And I'm really glad that Anthony sounds very similar to the original recording... he plays the best and most lovable nerd ever! I can NOT wait to hear La Vie Boheme!

like the clips, yes they are different, but with trying new things comes change sometimes, so more power to the rent cast.
no, it doesnt all sound like the OBC, but that is ok!!
im excited to see it, and since idina records "over the moon" live, that should be awesome!

I love what I've heard so far! I'm so excited for the movie. The play was amazing and I'm really excited to see it with most of the original cast.

On 'You'll See', I think Taye/Benny is trying to sound like he doesn't really care what Mark and Roger are saying, which is why I think it comes off as sounding...not that enthusiastic? Or something.
After listening to it several thousand more times, I'm in love. It sounds amazing.
And how good does everyone's favorite crazy bash brother sound? I'm talking about Aaron Lohr on 'Will I?'.I still watch my Mighty Ducks movies, faitfully. Sad, yes.
Anyhoo...

I think it sounds great, it just takes a little getting used to since we're all so used to the OBC recording. But this sounds equally amazing, if not better. Tracie and Rosario both sound great, along with everyone else. My only complaint: where's Idina!?
Posted by: Jon on 08/24/05 at 11:45 AM
I LOVE LOVE LOVE WILSON JERMAINE HEREDIA. uh-mazing.

This sounds great, but I really want to hear some of La Vie Boheme. That song is my anthem. I need to hear some of it...Pleease!!

Tracie, Rosario, and Idina are the best people ever. End of story.

I have seen this show 18 times since 1996, and have NEVER seen it done the same way twice. The people saying it's "different" might not have seen the show live. Listening to a CD is not even close to the real thing. Even with the very same cast...it is done differently live.
I have to say that I am thrilled about this movie! I have been a die hard RENT fan since the beginning and know that this movie is going to soar. Jonathan Larson wanted this show to touch millions and open there eyes to the world around them. Unfortunately, not everyone is into theatre, so in my eyes, this movie is simply carrying out Mr. Larson's dream.
I applaud this entire cast for bringing such breakthrough show to the big screen and doing it with such grace. Thank you for sharing yor incredible talents and thank you for sprinkling the spirit of RENT all over the world!
NO DAY BUT TODAY!

Wilson sounded good on "Today 4 U" and Jesse sounded awesome on "Santa Fe" those were the only two songs that I felt were really jazzed up and changed. I did love "Tango:Maureen" however!

Oh my God! At first I wasn't sure what to think. Like everyone else, I was expecting the OBCR. I keep forgetting that the actors are PEOPLE and mature and will likely not sound the same after almost 10 years. I loved it.
I know this sounds evil, but I was totally not expecting Rosario to fit in. I was so apprehensive about hearing her, since I've only ever thought of her as an actress. But Lordy, she has a BEAUTIFUL voice! Congrats! I know everyone's said it before me, but no Idina?! Come on! Anthony still sounds great. Adam sounds a little different, but he still sounds like Roger to me. Santa Fe was awesome. I can't wait for Tango Maureen. It took EVERY FIBRE OF MY BEING not to sing along. I didn't want to sing over your beautiful voices!!!
And I can't believe I'm the ONLY person to comment on this, but...AARON LOHR!!! He's grown up so much since Newsies ("I've gotta find an angle!") but his voice is still gorgeous. He'll never be anything but Mush to me. Thirteen years later and he'll always be Mush to us Newsies freaks. Just like Christian Bale will never be Batman, he'll always be Jack and David Moscow will never be whatever that mean manager's name was in Honey, he'll always be David Jacobs.
Ah, this is the RENT blog, not the Newsies blog! Anyway, all in all, unexpected, but beautiful. Good work, everyone!!!!!

After listening to the clips a dozen more times I have to say that I've changed my previous opinion. While I still hope Adam really belts it in the movie somewhere, him and Taye and Wilson, the only ones that sound different to me so far, are acting in film and it's just a different medium.
On stage things are exaggerated to get the message across with theatrics and song. It wouldn't look right on film, it would be downright cartoonish. So I take back everything I said, except the good stuff lol, and I have to say congrats on adapting your singing style to help the movie flow and make sense. I positively cannot wait to see the scenes that go along with these clips, I'm beside myself!
Luv ya Adam! and Jesse! and the rest!

At first I was feeling the same way as most of you. Then I realized that a majority of the cast had worked with Jonathan Larson, and his sister is highly involved. If they felt that what they were doing was not going to live up to his standards for the show, they wouldn't have recorded this. It is a different way of taking these songs, but as long as it's what Jonathan would have wanted, then I say rock on! (And yeah... Let's hear some Idina!)
Posted by: Andrea on 08/24/05 at 04:51 PM
to start out with something positive, i am in love with santa fe. also, i adore adam pascal (hes so amazing) who is really great in glory except for the line "a young man" in which he sounds really pathetic....i know some poeple say hes acting but i love to hear him belt! anthony and tracie are both awesome in tango:maureen.
BUT
The background music in Today 4 U is horrible and so distracting.
when i heard out tonight the first few times i also didnt like the new background music but its really growing on me.
Taye sounds bored in you'll see.
it really seems as though they are trying to make it more rock-ish than musical-ish but i guess thats understandable since they want to appeal to a larger audience than b-way fans.
Im really scared that i wont enjoy the movie since its so hard to beat the OBC recording. Im scared that all the backgrounds will be messed up.im scared that i will compare the movie too much with the OBC
....ok that settles it...i will not listen to the OBC recording again until after the movie!
no wait there is no way i can do that

The entire thing sounds AMAZING!!!!! Rosario's voice is sooo much better than Daphnie's Ro's is softer more like how i imagine Mimi to be.

Let's face it. Rent came out in 1996. It was a different time and a different mentality, not to mention a different era in music. We all love the OBC recording, but the movie, as far as i know, is set in 2005. "Everything that survives must change." Maybe it's that we're all experiencing a bit of shell-shock. The OBCR is pounded into my head, but if you treat the movie recording as a separate entity, not comparing and contrasting, it's great. Personally, I think it's a shame Tracie was too young to be in THE original cast in '96. Of course, I haven't even seen the movie yet, but she already -IS- Joanne for me. Tango is just .. wow. Rosario sounds great. Light My Candle was done flawlessly. She's got the whole seductress raspy gritty Mimi thing down, and you have to take into account that Out Tonight is set on stage in the Cat Scratch Club. At first OSG worried me, but just as the clip fades out you can definitely hear that he was about to get much more energetic and loud. The song has to start out slow, and unfortunately, I think the clip is misrepresenting it. Altogether, the music had to adapt to a different medium, and that's not easy. I love it.
Posted by: Maggie on 08/25/05 at 10:35 AM
P.S. I agree I want to hear 'Take Me or Leave Me' SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad I love that song. I'm glad that Traci is on the cast but I pretty much just wanna hear Idina... I think with Traci there the song will be kicked up a few notches on the sexy meter...I can't wait!
Posted by: Meghann on 08/25/05 at 11:23 AM
You know, I didn't know what to expect, I really didn't. I really love the original version, and I listen to it non-stop, but you know, this is really great and really fresh, and listening to it while watching you guys is gonna be the best... Can't wait for the release, I'll be first in line, you can count on that.

Over all I LIke It...All You Who Dont like It think about the first time you saw RENT on stage The interpritation is different so I actually liked it. I am excited to see the movie!!! and hear the non digitalized computer version to get the full quality it is good like it better or not it is still RENT and is still amazing. Keep an open mind because for sure it will be Different.
Posted by: Dan K. (RentHead For Life) on 08/25/05 at 01:59 PM
Wow. Wow wow wow!!! I completely wasn't expecting this, or the clips, and I have to say that it's carried me through the day and will for the whole week...I could NOT stop smiling, as usual after I see any blog entry, but this just made me madly hyper and happy. Thanks so + infinity much.
Of course it's going to have changes, and lots of changes, from the OBC recording, and I had to tell myself that at first, like, "this isn't the OBC in 1996, it's 2005!" It sounded realllllly great - different, of course, (and the same at the same time) but good different.
I kinda miss the simple background music on "One Song Glory", but I like the new version too...and Jesse in "Santa Fe" blew me away. And, it was awesome to finally hear Rosario and give a sigh of relief at her wonderful voice! It was different, but I really liked what I heard from her, and I think she'll make an awesome Mimi. All the OBC has gotten better, I think, and it'll take just a smidgeon of getting used to, but I LOVE the music.
Posted by: Alex on 08/25/05 at 02:00 PM
I have to agree with most of you...the first time I heard the clips I sat at my computer with my head cocked and the first thing out of my mouth was, "You have got to be kidding me..." I've has the OBC drilled into my head for the past 6 years, so to say I was shocked would be an understatement. But then I listened to them again and again...and yet again. The more I listened, the more I fell in love.
The movie is going to have some changes, so why not the soundtrack. I think that even though I love the OBC (as well as the rest of you), I'm going to have to let it go. This movie is going to be it's own entity, however similar to the original, it's different and new.
We need to step back and have a little faith. The original was amazing, so let's trust that this one will blow us away as much as the last.
As for worrying that "La Vie Boheme" wont be in the movie. I don't think they'd take it out. There have been comments made by the cast about shooting that scene...so it's there, just not in the clips they decided to give us.
Posted by: Robyn on 08/26/05 at 08:42 PM
'Tango Maureen' and 'out tonight' are oh so hot! But I know it was goinging to kick major butt anyway1 :)Wootness!

I just wanted to add that when you think about it, the fact that one of your favorite musicals has to change is almost the same way a parent might feel when they're watching their kids grow up(I know, really dumb comparison since I don't know a thing about it, but just bear with me here). When changes happen, you at first shocked, but in the end, you know you still love it. So frankly, we all have to stop comparing the soundtracks for the play and the movie, because of course it's gonna be different, so it'll be a waste of time. They're both good. By the way, I think in "You'll See" Taye/Benny was trying to sound nonchalant, and I think it works pretty well. Plus, they have to attract a mix of the die hard audience from back in 1996, the people who were too young to see the OBC at the time but would really love to have a second chance and the people who don't like musical theater at all and just want to have a movie to fill up their holiday weekend. Not to mention the originals of the show have grown up a lot in the past 9 years and there's a new director and two new actresses in it. In other words, how could you NOT expect a change? I can't say that either is better, but they're both good. If I should partially quote another one of Idina's famous musicals "Who can say if it's been changed for the better, but it has been changed for good." Anyway, that's all I've got to say. No Day but Today.

wow. what can i say?
overall, beautiful. beautiful. it has heightened my enthusiasm towards seeing the movie even more, if possible.
i get attached to things very easily, and having listened to the OBCR for so long, became familiar with its every little intricacy. so, at first, i wasn't exactly sure what to think about this. but after the third listening, i really began to like it. and of COURSE there will be differences from the OBCR, otherwise, what's the point? and i know that when i listen to the whole cd once it comes out, i'll come to love it just as much if not more than the original.
i was very impressed with almost all of the songs. everyone sounds as great as ever. and i LOVED getting to hear rosario's voice for the first time and being assured that she can take mimi's role on. she really blew me away.
overall, it was great hearing them. they sound fantastic, it completely made my day, and i can't wait to hear more of it. :)
Posted by: miryam on 08/29/05 at 09:57 PM
I actually love the clips! Adam Pasal sounds so great, his voice is so raw and full of emotion...I just can't help but get so absorbed in 'One Song Glory.'
As for 'Out Tonight' and 'Light My Candle' I absolutely love how Rosario sounds, considering I hated how raspy Daphne's voice sounded on the OBC...I know the hardcore fans are out to get me now. I didn't hate her voice though, she was still very good, I just favor Rosario's voice better.
As for Tracie....you still don't stop to amaze me. I'm so glad that you get to live this dream out.
Anthony, Taye, Jesse and Wilson, I don't want to be redunant but they are fantabulous as usual, I just love hearing them sing.
Kind of up set that we haven't had a chance to scope out Idina's singing but I can wait, I mean I've waited how long for this to come out?
Anyway, to sum it all up everyone has surpassed my expections of them and I'm so glad. Especially when I heard this Aaron Lohr...that was a surprise.
Sincere thanks to the cast, crew and everyone involved,
Leeann

Two bits of news for you today:
