Jesse L. Martin Answers Your Questions
Do you read these posts? - Serena Yes I do read the posts. I do care to know what you guys think. What's a D.P. and what's a bender? - Bree A D.P. is a Director of Photography. Responsible for what the film looks like. Our D.P. Stephen Goldblatt is the best there is. Any chance you'll be making a CD - just you? - Ann No, I can't imagine that I would do a solo CD. It's one thing to sing as a character, in a dramatic context, with a great writer. It's another thing to sing as myself, in no context, with me as the writer. I have too much respect for REAL songwriters and musicians to pretend. Toughest scene to film? - Marlen The hardest scene to shoot was the finale because it meant 3 days of sadness. But even that was fun. After you're done in LA, are you coming back to NY? - Rach After filming concluded I came back to my home. NEW YORK CITY! Is there going to be a soundtrack for the movie? - Lacey Yes, there will be soundtrack album. Chris Columbus is right. Taye Diggs was, by far, the funniest person on set.

No...you rule! =) A million thanks for dropping by. Just as a little aside, my mom is one of those folks who thinks its "inappropriate" to be a homosexual; but the moment she found out her favorite Law & Order actor was none other than the original Tom Collins... I haven't heard a peep out of her yet. Thank you for that with all of my heart.
Much love & I can't wait to see you back on the show!

I know that with the thousands of rentheads out there (including me) that you probably don't need to know how much we support you and all that yall are doing for RENT. I'm so excited that I'm making everyone I know watch the trailer. I just can't contain my joy! Thanks so much!

First, I had to wait 7 months for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Then I found out that I have to wait 5 months until I can see Wicked when it comes to St. Louis, and NOW I have to wait 4 months for Rent!
I HATE WAITING! But it keeps me excited!
I can't wait to see the show and I'm so excited because I've never seen Rent but I have the cheap CD version of the soundtrack and I love to listen to it!
Idina became one of my favorite singers when my choir seemed to become obsessed with Wicked.
I never knew Taye or Jesse could sing! I watched Taye on his show and Jesse on Law and Order and I never thought big guys like them could sing! Let alone sing on BROADWAY!
I'm so excited and I'm counting down the days!
Thanks for giving me something to look forward to!

It is so great to read these blog posts. Especially from you and the other cast members besides Anthony (not that I don't like reading Anthony's posts.. it is just that he has always been so vocal on the internet.. from the very beginning). I can't wait to see the movie on the big screen..
And, I just need to say that you kick some major @ss on the Bright Lights, Big City recording. *grin*

I am still trying to reconcile the Law & Order actor with the warm voice that comes with Collins. Jesse, "I'll Cover You" has both made me smile and cry. You are worderful.

Thanks for the additional blog, Jesse! It's so GREAT to know that there are "celebrities" out there who truly appreciate their fan base!! Keep blowin' up like you're doing, you already have a true fan in me (ever since your '413 Hope Street' days - man, has it been THAT long??) Can't wait for the movie (there are about 20 of us so far who are going to see it on Nov. 11th, and yes, we'll all be singing along). Also, can't wait to see you again on Law & Order.
Peace, love, and happiness!

You are such an amazing vocalist! Have a little more respect for yourself man! You put so much emotion into everything that you sing. I can listen to your "I'll Cover You: reprise" 10 times over again, and still feel the heart and soul you insert into the music.
With much Love,

Jesse,
You have such a great voice, I could listen to any of your songs on repeat for hours. Every song you're in is improved greatly by your vocals, as you demonstrated at the Tonys!
Also, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Can't wait to see you back on Law & Order soon!

You really do have a great voice Jesse. Even though you aren't going to make your own CD, you're awesome . I agree with you on the part where there should be a lot of respect to songwriters and musicians. It takes hard work to write a song. Took me days to write mine.

HURRAH for Jesse...=P Hurrah for you!!! Thanks for posting and answering questions! Made my day completely. I have to say, I appreciate the fact that we're all appreciated, if you know what I mean, lol. It means a lot for me (and everyone else, I'm sure) to be considered and responded to and integrated into everything, instead of just being spectators behind a glass wall. Sooo grateful and thankful.
I'm in love with your voice, just like I'm in love with all the actor's voices. "I'll Cover You" (Reprise) always brings tears to my eyes - it makes my heart ache, seriously. You put such passion and intense feeling into everything that you do.

"I have too much respect for REAL songwriters and musicians to pretend."
My best friend and I die a little inside at how beautiful "I'll Cover You (Reprise)" is when you sing it. We were so excited when we learned you signed on for the movie too. So if you ever decided to take a shot the pre-order line could form behind us.

I just wanted to say that my favorite part in the entire play is the reprise of "1000 Sweet Kisses," when Tom Collins sings "When your heart has expired." And its your voice I play over and over again and it always brings tears to my eyes no matter where I am or what I'm doing when I hear that line.

WE'LL COVER YOU!
Jesse...you're performance of Collins is the "heart" of RENT. Collins unconditional love and acceptance of Angel is the emotional core of the story. There won't be a dry eye in the house during "I'll Cover You - Reprise". Thank you for bringing so much humanity to the role. We'll be there for you on 11/11/05.

Hey Jesse!
Thank you so much for caring about us and checking in. It means so much that you all think of the fans when filming and give your time up to update us. Thanks for answering those questions! I can't wait to see you and the rest on the big screen.
Your idea for a rep company is great and i hope you all do it! You have my unwavering support in anything you set out to do. And if you don't do your own cd (which you really should) maybe when you have a break from Law and Order you could come back to broadway? Would you ever consider doing that? Your voice is just too beautiful not to be heard constantly hehe. Sorry, I'm gushing.
I have a few more questions if you decide to answer any more,
- Was it easy/hard to recreate your chemistry with wilson?
-Had you stayed in touch with much of the cast over the years..what was it like to be all together again?
-Anthony had said that many in the original cast weren't pleased with the OBC recording. Do you feel that this recording is better?
Well, Thanks again for the post, hope to see more soon!
Chelsea
ps. You were great at the Tony's!

Hi Anthony, I'd like to start off by just saying how much respect I have for you, and all of your cast and crew mates for putting in so much effort and dedication for your fans by doing these blogs etc. That truly says a lot about the general attitude of this cast and I for one have complete trust and gratitude towards you all... Now on with my question...
I am an eighteen year old Canadian, planning on attending university next year double majoring in English and Theatre... I have to get a teaching degree first, but after school I want to move to the states to pursue a theatre career... I know... "so do a lot of people" but I was just wondering if you had any advice for an eighteen year old aspiring singer/actor. Any tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated coming from one of my favorite actors ;)!

I think that you are amazing. I almost peed my pants when I saw the cast of Rent in Entertainment. But I got my mom into Rent and she cries every time she listens to I'll Cover You (Reprise). Your voice is so raw and expressive. I love it love it love it. And Law & Order too! It seems like you only pick the high quality projects. Keep up the amazing work!!!!
XOXO,
Shelby

Thanks for the post, man! About what you said on doing a solo CD, thanks for being so real man. That was one of the coolest things that I've heard someone say. You obviously have the voice to be able to carry your own CD. But just because you can, doesn't mean that you have to. I was a fan before, but now I truely do respect you for a comment like that. So many people are going solo and starting singing careers just because they can. I won't blow anybody's spot up, but we all know who they are. To see someone with such integrity like that is really great to see.

Dear Jesse,
Ahhh you guys all rock!
A question for all cast members:
1) What is your favorite RENT song out of all of them?
2) For the transition from stage to movie, how smooth was it? Or was it a little more difficult than regular stage? And in what ways?
Thanks, to all the RENT movie cast members, I love you all!
Posted by: Christa on 07/14/05 at 12:10 AM
Yay. Cool post! Thank you for taking the time.
Still wish you were going to release a solo CD though. Not a musician my bottom!

Just another friendly reminder that we love you guys and I'm glad you guys care because we care. Caring's best when it's a two-way road!
...
Actually, most things in life are best as two-way roads, but caring's a big one, like a four-laned road or even a TREX highway, so I'm glad that you guys care. Take care, and come back to Broadway sometime please Jesse!

Dear Jesse,
I just wanted to say how much I admire you. You're one of the few actors that can play both a funny and serious roll, which really is a large talent. I haven't seen you in a role that you've done a bad job in, though to tell the truth all I've seen is RENT and Law&Order. You've just got one of those voices that really touches the heart. Thank you for doing the movie. I had a couple of questions though.
-Is it difficult making Chemistry with people who weren't in the original production?
-Has the actual show changed alot for the movie?
-Did any of the character's attitudes change for the movie?
Thanks alot for just reading this. Can't wait until me and my friends grab our sleeping bags and wait next to our theatre until Midnight so we can see the midnight showing on November 11th.
Thanks,
Fleury

Jesse-
Just wanted to say that I really admire you as an actor. I always loved you on Law and Order before I discovered that you were in Rent and when I listened to the Rent soundtrack for the first time and heard you sing I was just amazed! Your voice is so powerful and amazing and you make Collins' character come alive. If I ever get the chance to see Rent on Broadway I don't think I will be able to watch it without picturing you as Collins. Congratulations on the conclusion of filming. I cannot wait to see Rent this fall.
Posted by: Caitlin on 07/14/05 at 11:34 AM
Thank you to everyone involved with RENT who has posted on this blog. We Rentheads appreciate it more than you probably know.
I have a question for anyone willing/able to answer. The cast seems incredibly close. Does this happen for actors on most of their projects? Or is it something special with RENT, with being in an emotionally powerful show that was similar (I blindfully assume) to where you were at that point of your life?
I wish everyone the best of luck with this and all your future projects.

2 Questions/Comments: The film trailer looks magical. I remember the early days(I saw Rent at the NY Theatre Workshop)---and several times at the Nederlander. Why was the original Broadway cast never filmed for a PBS special?? I have fond memories of being a child and being exposed to musical theatre by watching "Sunday In the Park With George" on PBS. Question 2) How do Fredi Walker and Daphne Rubin-Vega feel about not being included in the film---the amazing Gwen Stewart--for that matter to?)
Posted by: Bill Livsey on 07/14/05 at 02:21 PM
Jesse, if you're going to limit your singing to musicals then I'd love to see you as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar! Looking forward to the movie and the CD.

I am so happy that there is a RENT movie site with a blog and so many other features. Thank you for taking the time to actually answer our questions. I think you are just great, and we hope that you post more in the future. No day goes by when I don't watch the RENT movie trailer a couple of times, and I am so proud of this movie, even though I have only seen 2:41 of the previews as the movie trailer. I love you on Law and Order, and we are so happy that you made the decision to leave for a little bit to do the RENT movie and have a little reunion for the OBC. Thanks again for the answers, and we all look forward to more posts, hopefully in the very near future.

I just wanted to let you know that my mother has got one hell of a massive crush on you, sir. She just watches "Law & Order" and sighs after each of your scenes. Nothing funny, though. She is happily married. I thought I'd post that little bit as you've stated you do read these and I hoped to give you a bit of a chuckle.
I am so anxious for this movie. I saw the trailor for it on the big screen a few days ago and squealed with excitement. And yes, your voice still brings me to tears.

Jesse, I just love you. From that X-files episode, to Ally McBeal, to Law & Order I have been a fan. Problem was that I never saw the play RENT, original cast or otherwise, only had the CD, and I didn't make the connection until recently. Well, I freaked out! I already LIKED you, now it's finished, I'm in love....sigh.
Anywho, my website in on the RENT webring, email me if you accept my marriage proposal, lol. If not, (the more likely scenario), I am a fan for life, keep up the excellent work!!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG FROM "RENT"
Posted by: Michael Beecham on 07/15/05 at 08:01 PM
I'm very anxious to SEE you in action. From the original soundtrack I've heard you many times.... countless. I am just excited to see it all come together.
One thing that gets to me every time I see RENT on broadway, the "I'll cover you" (reprise). After the first 5 times seeing it, I no longer cried during that scene - but then I read that you sang it at Jonathan's funeral. Now, the 9th time I saw it - I started crying again! I just imagined it all, and how hard that must have been. You saying you had to just focus otherwise you would have lost it.
I can NOT wait for the movie, I am actually dying to see the trailer on the big screen. I'm going to the movies, JUST TO SEE THE TRAILER!!!! I still haven't seen it on the big screen.
Thank you for making Tom Collins memorable.
Sincerely,
Tracie

No solo CD from you? Awww... Are you sure? Are you absolutely sure? Well... if you ever decide to release something, I'll be the first in line to buy it. Promise.
Yip! I am SO thrilled about the soundtrack! Awesome!
Keep up the good work!

Hi, Jesse--I've been a big fan for a long time (you actually are what got me started watching Ally McBeal), and can't wait for 11/11. Whenever I'm stressed out, I listen to "I'll Cover You: Reprise"--something about the song and your voice take me exactly where I need to be!
I know this is a Rent site, but since you said that you do read these posts, I also want to thank you for A Christmas Carol: The Musical. I teach middle school general music (aka "music for the kids who don't particularly like music"), and as we see the play at the Great Lakes Theatre Festival every year, I assigned them the musical when it aired. I could not BELIEVE the overwhelming response, especially from my boys (who are by far one of the toughest audiences for musicals), who really enjoyed seeing some of their tv faves singing and dancing. Several even had their parents watch with them when it re-aired on USA. So many thanks and props for being such a great influence on "my kids." Can't wait to see you all on 11/11, and to see you back in the squadroom this fall!

Thank you, JESSE!
I'm glad to see that the color scheme for the movie seems to be, well..the colors I've had in my room since middle school! (red, white, black, metallics).
I'm very into Publicity for Theatre (I've competed and even been award Superior at Florida State Competitions), and I can't WAIT to see the official promo poster for the movie!!! Looking back to those months when a RENT movie would have been a dream come true, and now it has, is too good to be true.
As to what Anthony answered in his post, do you or any other cast members think you'll be doing some sort of Broadway 10th Anniversary special performance(s)???? Can't wait to hear more!

Hi Jesse!
Thanks for answering some of the questions here. It was great to read them and I think its fabulous how informed you and the rest of the cast have kept us Rentheads about the film and everything this summer. I am extremely excited to see the movie this fall and I really can't wait to hear the new soundtrack! I may or may not have the original one memorized, LOL =) I do have one question for you though. Are you going to be back to Law & Order this coming season? I was sad to see you off the show during part this past season and I worried that you had left for good. Then, later on, I realized you were probably only written out to film RENT (and I couldn't be happier about that for sure!) but I missed you on L&O. I hope to see you back on that show this coming season! Thanks again for your answers and many blessings to you! =)
Heather =)

Jesse,
What made you decide that you wanted to be a part of the Law & Order cast? What are the other cast members like? L&O is really awesome, and i'm hoping to see you in the upcoming season.
Stay cool man,

i'd just to like to add my agreement that your voice is amazing, and no musician/songwriter could ever be disrespected by it. question: when you were in the stage production of rent, there was mention of a one-man show you were trying to do about marvin gaye. it seemed like such a great idea; are you still pursuing that?
Posted by: ian on 07/18/05 at 03:07 PM
Jesse,
As someone who has watched you on Law & Order I am very much looking forward to seeing you on the screen as Collins. If you are as good as all these other Rentheads say you are, then it's going to be a real treat.
Here's to November 11 and the debut of RENT the movie and many, many seasons on love on L & O.
No Day But Today!

Can't wait for your return to L&O.
Hasn't been the same without you :-(

I had the pleasure of seeing "Rent" at the Nederlander a few years ago and as much as I enjoyed it, it just wasn't the same without this cast. I'm posting this to you specifically because the reprise of "I'll Cover You" was where I really felt the difference. That's the song that got me hooked to begin with and the song that's most moving for me even now. There are far too many minutes left until November.

Jesse-
Thank you so much for answering some questions. That's awsome that the fans are showing such open support to you about the movie. In all honesty, if I ever ran into anyone involved, I'd go up and hug them. :-P From the trailer, blog clips, pictures, and of course the cast's blog entries, it sounds absolutely amazing and 100 times better then we could have ever anticipated. I wish November would hurry up and get here so I can see the whole movie. I finally saw the trailer in theatres and got such chills. Just the overall feeling of it was so powerful and its very rare that I, myself, get that kind of feeling from a trailer alone. Anyways, thanks as always for taking the time to post and read our rambles (like mine for example) ;-P. Best wishes.

Hi Jessie,
I was just wondering if you were going to return to law and order. I really like the program and it just wouldn't be the same if you were not a part of it.

I was just wondering if there is going to be an "Official Jesse L. Martin Web Site" sponsored by you?

Its really great to hear about someone from the Blue Ridge doing well, all we hear about these days is Frank Beamer....
Its a pleasure to see that the film seems to be doing so well..im so excited and I miss you on Law and Order
Yeah thats right Im a kid from the Blue Ridge Mountains that is a Law and Order and Rent fan...who would have thought we existed

Hey Jesse,
Was there ever any clash with law and order shooting and rent shooting? If so, what was the resolution? Does one have priority over the other?
U sounded awsome on the preview.

I'm coming a bit late to the party but i think we should focus on the fact that I'm here rather than the time I arrived. I've only listened to the deluxe soundtrack of the Broadway version but this is powerful especially the I'll Cover You Reprise, how do you manage to not get emotionally drained or do you get emotionally drained? I'm a huge fan of Law and Order and had no clue you were a part of this amazing force RENT. THank you for your time.

You're coming back to Law and Order!?! After that episode where Ed Green got shot, I was in such denial I stopped watching the show...now I'll have to start watching it again!!

I just wanted to take a moment to say how thrilled I am to finally see this movie happen. I have followed Rent from the beginning as a musical obsessed 5th grader, if you can believe that, and it was one of the crowning events so far in my life to have my father suprize me with 2 tickets to a performance the day after my prom!!! With this movie, I'll be able to keep my love of the music and the story fresh in my heart. Thank you All for agreeing to come back and help this magic happen again
Sincerly
Angela, a professed Renthead
P.S.-If I lived in New York, and not the middle of Missouri those advance tickets would be mine LOL :-)

Jesse -- I didn't know about the movie when your character was shot so, whew, sigh of relief. Glad to see you reprise the role of Collins and happy that you'll be returning to Law & Order (one of my favorite shows).
Posted by: CP on 07/29/05 at 08:07 PM
Jesse - I am totally psyched that you came back to play Tom on film. Was it emotional for you to reprise your role with many of your chums from the original Broadway production? See you back on L & O. Best, Mike

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION! Now I only wish I had asked something better. Hehe. I'm TOO excited for the movie.
I know someone who worked with you once. It's probably too vague of a connection for you to remember (I have no last names, dates, none of that), but when she told me I flipped!
Thank you for taking the time to answer everyones questions.

I just wanted to let you know that I was THRILLED to hear you were reprising your Broadway role. I saw you do Rent a few years ago, and you absolutely blew me away. I later took my husband to see the show, but alas....new cast. We played your version of "I'll Cover You" as the prelude to our wedding ceremony. I would completely support you doing a solo project!! You are fantastically talented, and I figured you needed just one more person to tell you so. Best of luck! Can't wait to see Rent in November.

Jesse,
I first want to say that I love and admire your work so much. I am a musical theatre major, and you are one of the performers I look to for creative inspiration. You have made a name for yourself in television, yet you still seem true to your stage roots. I have loved following your theatre career, and I hope you will be in something again soon!
Keep up the awesome work. Can't wait to see the movie!

I just wanted to say how excited I am to see RENT, the movie. I have the original soundtrack and everytime I hear you sing "I'll Cover You" Reprise, I get goosebumps. I also can't wait to see you back on Law & Order...it's not the same without you! Now that you've filmed a huge movie and you've been on a popular TV series, which do you prefer? Movies or TV?
Take care and keep up the great work!

I can't wait to see how "I'll Cover You (reprise)" transitions to the big screen. It is by far my favorite song, mostly because you sing it with this passion and emotion in your voice. Amazing.

So here is the thing:
I was on set of Rent in the Riot scene as a specialty extra (basically an actor who has an Equity Card who has done some stage combat :-) )
So I'm playing a homeless person. I get on the set and they funk me up real good. Big brown leather coat. ratted out clothes. They fountained up my dreads into this nasty ol waterfall. And they put a lot of dirt on my face. All replete with my husbands work boots I brought.
So I walk out of Extras costuming and makeup and there is Jesse L. Martin riding about on this white bike. As a rule of thumb it is common courtesy for extras not to speak with Principals because they are busy focusing on the real work of acting. This I respect on every movie set I have had the pleasure to be on in The Bay Area.
I walk by...Jesse stops and says: "GIRL THEY MESSED YOU UP!!" He had me bustin' up laughing.
May I say to all of you that Mr. Martin is one of the nicest people I have ever met on a movie set.
If you are reading this Jesse, let me just tell you as a professional Equity Actor (and now a SAG card holder...Rent made me SAG and landed me a principal role in Berkeley in an Indy) that I cannot thank you enough for being one of the good ones.
If I as an actress ever get to the level you have achieved, I hope I still have the humility and kindness that you showed on this set.
Thank you for the drumming in the back, the smiles and the good times. You made a working actor feel welcome.
May your work on this movie win accolades, awards, and all the great things that you so well deserve.
Oh. And may your life be wonderful and complete.
Warm Regards,

"New York City, the center of the universe." Ha! Couldn't help it, even though that's Wilson's line. Anyway, once again, it's great to hear from you. Also, don't be so hard on yourself, I'm sure you'd be great on a solo CD. After all, you're a great singer. But hey, I'm not forcing you. Also, it's great how even the sad scenes are fun for you guys. I guess it's all part of it feeling like a reunion or something. Ha! Anyway, God bless and good luck in the future.

Hi there, Jesse!
I just wanted to say how excited I am for you and all of the other cast members. What an amazing opportunity for all of you! Plus, it speaks very highly of Mr. Columbus. A smart move, I believe. He obviously knows not to mess with a good thing.
I'm also a big fan of your work. I went to school at AMDA in New York City. While there, I did actually have the pleasure of meeting you in the streets of SoHo, and I always love to tell the tale, showing my musical theatre buddies the polaroid that was taken with your camera. :) It was a few years ago, but we discussed the whole "six degrees of seperation" theory seeing as I know your old roomates mother, Lennie Singer. You were incredibly kind, down to earth, and supportive. I remember telling you that you needed to go back to musical theatre. haha! I'm sure it wasn't on my advice that you did, but I am happy to see you back in a genre that suits you so well.
Keep up that good work, and congratulations on your many successes. You deserve each and every one.
Sincerely,
Lauren Petzke

Jessie! I love how soulful your voice is, especially in the reprise of Ill cover you, brings me to tears every time I hear it - which is thounsands of times over the last almost-decade...
I know you said you werent thinking of putting out a solo cd, but ever consider on of broadway songs? cuz then you are still acting, and maybe you can even get some of the obc to come back for duets or something :) Id totally buy a cd of you singing broadway songs!

hey Jesse,
Saw a midnight screening of the movie last night and was absolutely stunned - everything was beautiful. However, you in particular brought such an ease and honesty to the screen that I could not take my eyes off of you - you raised the bar. Lastly, I caught the OBC during the London run and sat a couple rows from the stage. I am convinced we made eye contact when you sang "seasons and love" and smiled at eachother - super lame, i know, but that smile lit up my world. You're wonderful.
Take care and keep doin' what your doin'
peace and love,
robin

Jesse - I just saw the first screening in little Ames, IA...and I was completely amazed by your performance. There is no way to explain how the honesty in your eyes drew me into the film. I felt what you were feeling...I felt your presence. Silly, I know - but now it is a dream of mine to meet you. Your newest fan.

jesse, i saw the movie just now, and i cried through the entire second half. your performance was inspiring, and i was elated. it was quite possibly the most beautiful thing i've ever seen. i've listened to the broadway soundtrack obsessively for a year now, and i love the slight changes from the musical to the movie. you're absolutely brilliant, and i thank you profusely for sharing your talent with the world.

Hey Jesse,
Being a Canadian, I never saw the Broadway play and very much looked forward to the movie. I had now idea that my favourite Law and Order guy was in the original cast and could sing!!! I just saw the movie yesterday and loved it. You SHOULD think about doing your own cd. You have an amazing voice with a fabulous range. (The earlier comment about you making a great "Judas" in Jesus Christ Superstar is a terrific idea). The entire cast was very talented and it sounds like you had such fun making the movie and it shows.
I wish you much continued success with the TV show, movie and your carrer.
Cheers! (A new "Rent-Head"!)

Jesse,
I saw the movie twice opening weekend. Your portrail of Collins was amazing. I get flutters in my stomach when I think of your expression as "I'll Cover You" starts. So sweet and innocent and genuinely excited to have Angel show how much she cares for Collins!
I have to admit when I heard Chris Columbus was going to be the director I was a little nervous. I have had so much respect for what Jonathan Larson and Michael Greif did for the stage for so long, I was afraid to trust anyone to do it justice. My fears were quickly and completely eased. The movie was more than I could have ever hoped for. I feel that we were able to get to know the characters better and see the subtlties of each performace thanks to the film. I congratulate you and your fellow cast mates on a tremendous performance!
Thank You and Congratulations from a HUGE fan!!!
Take Care!

I love rent, but collins is my favorite part by far! I don't even know why but ever since the first time I saw rent, I knew. I always get so excited when I see you on law and order, but when I heard the movie was coming out I couldn't help but feel like it was one of the best things ever to happen. After I was already in love with the charecter of collins and a big fan of yours I found out you bought your costume from my aunts store in New York when rent was first started! I was so surprised.I hope you read my post!

Hey thee Mr. Martin,
(that is to say that this is really you)I loved the movie Yours and Angels performances where great. They made me and my friends laugh and cry. We thank you for that, much love Emma.
Posted by: Emma on 12/03/05 at 03:59 PM
Hi there Mr. Martin!
I just wanted to say that I saw Rent back in Feb of '97 and have been in love with it ever since. I was skeptical about the movie until I heard the Original Cast had been (mostly) reunited- I knew it was in good hands then. I kept up with the news on the filming and what not... all of it sounded fantastic.
Sadly, I've been living in the UK for the last three years... so I've not been able to see the final product yet! It's killing me! So I've been doing whatever I can to get my Rent fix, scouring the internet for film clips, listening to the OBCR on repeat... I do what I have to ;)
Just wanted to say that Collins has always been my favourite character, I think both because of who he is, but also expressly because you infused him with so much warmth and depth. You made him truly beautiful. And your singing voice is unparalleled. My two favourite songs from the show are "I'll Cover You (reprise)" and "Santa Fe"... the latter has actually been what's kept me sane through an intense period of deadlines recently, and has even been making me dance down the streets of Edinburgh! I've been getting a lot of funny looks, but hey man, who cares. It's a lot harder to be stressed when you're travelling by dance.
Anyway, I just wanted to both thank you for giving us your amazing portrayal of Collins and congratulate you on the film. I've heard nothing but good things and the clips are fabulous- I can't wait to come home for Christmas and see it!...
Take care and keep up the amazing work.
With much respect,
Libby

Jesse,
I've always been a fan of yours, I think I've watched every episode of Law and Order, and I have to say you own this role! You're such an amazing actor with a beautiful singing voice. I can't go a day without listening to the soundtrack with I'll Cover You, Today 4 U and Santa Fe topping the list. Rent is such a great play to begin with and you guys just bring it to life, getting the message about AIDs out there. My family is into very local theater, nothing big, and I hope that, someday, I'll be able to do something like RENT, with a message to tell the world. (I just read that and it sounds so corny... bear with me.) I have such a passion for acting and no time to do it. I hope to do something in the summer. You and the rest of the cast are such an inspiration to me, making me laugh and cry in the same beat. I hope to see you guys perform live one of these days! NO day but today!
Love

Seeing the movie was a wonderful experience for me. I'm not normally a fan of musicals, but the development of the characters brought me into the film very quickly. I was very moved.
Posted by: Andy on 12/31/05 at 03:59 PM
Hey Jesse,
Well, I've been a rent head since way before the movie. I'm 16. I've seen the musical, I've seen the movie. I know the whole musical by heart. Now the whole movie by heart. I saw the movie once every day it was out. Your truly excellent at playing the part of Collins. I espically liked your part in La Vie Boheme. You pulled off the likeness of the way Collins is supposed to be acted out. I love to just randomly sing the songs with my family. My older brother Aj, who brought me into the RENT thing back about 6 years ago, loves to sing Rogers part. My older brother Brian sings Mark's part. Aj's Fiance likes to do Mimi, I like to do Your part, Collins. and my cousins Sam and Angie like to do Joanne and Maureen, along with my girlfriend who loves to do the part of Angel. So we'll sit and listen to the whole soundtrack and just all sing along with it. We're all rent heads, what more can I say? Thanks for the inspiration, maybe one day I can be part of he musical.
Thanks for the Inspiration. Your my Idol Jesse.
Mucho love.

Posted by: Nora on 03/08/06 at 07:11 PM
Wow. I have a lot to say and not a ton of space, so I'll just say what I have to say. You are an INCREDIBLE actor and obviously have no idea how much I admire you, but I really do. My favorite scenes in "Rent" are pretty much the ones with you in it-- and it's not just because of the songs; it's because you (and Wilson Jermaine Heredia) make the scene. I never saw the original Broadway show (too young when you were in it) but I've been listening to the original cast soundtrack for years, so even before the movie I knew how incredible of a singer and actor you are. Don't take me wrong-- you're still amazing in the movie! Whenever I hear or see the "I'll Cover You (Reprise)" I start crying. It's not just the power of the words (though the plot saddens me as well-- of course) but the way you act them so accurately-- in that song you ARE Collins, and you really DID just lose the love of your life. Not many songs can bring me to tears, but yours can, and that's saying something, considering I've seen about 20 different Broadway shows, and listened to countless albums, and I'm only twelve.
You have brought so much to the acting community. Now I just have one favor to ask-- and I know it might be much, but I would appreciate it if you take my question to heart. I am an aspiring musical theatre actress (have been since I was three). I am currently starring in my school's spring musical of "Guys and Dolls" as the missionary Sarah Brown. The only thing is that I have zero self-confidence whatsoever. Even my singing teacher has told me, and I quote, that I have "the voice of a young Idina Menzel and the confidence of a toenail." I don't know if this gives you my email address (though they ask it) but if they don't, it's sarahbeara6@aol.com. Please, if you ever get the chance and have any advice for an actress hoping to follow in an incredible actor's footsteps, please just drop me a line. You have no idea how much it would mean to me.
Thank you for your time and for your contributions to the Broadway community. You are truly an inspiration.
Yours truly,
Sarah

Jesse,
I am obsessed with all of the Law and Order shows and that is where I first realized who you were. Once I found out you were in Rent I definitely wanted to see it. You have an amazing voice!!!!! I can't get enough of it. I can listen to "I'll Cover You" and the reprise at least 10 times in a row. I love your character in the film because of your acceptance of Angel (not just you but all of the characters) and your caring personality. Collins and Angel were definitely my favorite characters in the movie. Although, I absolutely loved everyone else. Thanks for making the movie because it gave me the opportunity to see Rent since I was too young to see in originally on Broadway.

I have one word for you AWESOME! You have the most amazing voice I've ever heard. I've watched you on Law & Order (actually you were the reason I started watching it) and when I saw the trailer for Rent I was blown away! I knew I definitely had to see it. and of course I did and I loved it. I bought the movie the day it came out and now I watch it about every week. I have so much respect for you!
I have one question (actually I have a ton of questions but I will ask those later) are you going to tour with Rent this year? For my birthday, my friends are taking to Atlanta to see it, and I've been hoping that I would see you there!!
Thanks so much.

Hello folks. Jesse aka Collins here. Just checking in to show my gratitude to you all for being so enthusiastic in your responses on the blog. Rentheads have stopped me on the street and voiced their approval of what they've seen so far. I hope you all realize that it is truly amazing that you have such a vested interest in the outcome of this film. There were many, many moments filming where we were sure to make choices based on what the fans would appreciate. You guys had
everything to do with the filming and, I believe, everything to do with how the world absorbs this story. That is remarkable. Thank you. In response to some of the questions posted:
