Anthony Rapp Answers Your Questions

Hey everybody --

Thanks for the hundreds of comments you all have been posting in response to our blog entries. Seems like Idina is far and away the winner in the comments sweepstakes, huh? Glad to see her many fans from Wicked are following her to this project as well. Seriously, your support and enthusiasm has meant so much to all of us. Keep spreading the word...

Anyway, I wanted to respond to some of the questions that have piled up. So here goes.

What's it like working with everyone again? Was it hard to get back into the character? - Lindsey

Working with everyone again -- and playing this character again -- has been like going home. I know it might sound sappy or something, but it's true. Even though we last performed this show together almost eight years ago, somehow the connection we all had to the material has stayed alive and fresh, and in some ways has even deepened. I have always felt a real affinity to Mark, and I still do, so it was nothing but a pleasure to step into his shoes again. I have always loved that in Mark I get to play someone who's alternately intense, funny, intelligent, a little wacky, pent up, grief-stricken, frustrating, and very much alive. It's the best role I've ever had the privilege to play.

With your busy schedule are you able to spend much time at home? - Lwazi

Lately, I've been gone far more often than I've been home. I was on the road with Little Shop of Horrors from last August until December, at which point I stayed in San Francisco to work on Rent, which just ended a couple of weeks ago. In the meantime I had a couple of weeks in New York while we shot the first few scenes, but that's it. I'm not complaining at all, though; I love to work, and I love to travel. It'd be pretty ideal, though, to get a job that keeps me home for awhile, since I also love to be home. We'll see what comes along next.

Do you ever think that you know your character so well that you don't need direction anymore? - Thomas

Honestly, no. I am always aware that because I can't really be objective about my performance, I will need someone there to point things out to me. I do believe that there are times when I might have a stronger insight about what a particular moment should feel like, since I'm the one living it, but in cases like that I hope the director and I have the kind of relationship where we can discuss and collaborate on such things. Happily, Chris and I had that, both in Adventures in Babysitting and in Rent. He's incredibly trusting of his actors, but also knows what he wants, and is able to communicate well so both of us are happy. That's a rare quality, especially when it comes to directors of films, who are sometimes less than articulate when talking to actors. Theatre directors tend to be a bit more actor-friendly.

Can we hope for a photography book, Anthony? - Bethy

Well, that's not entirely up to me; it would be up to a publisher who thinks highly enough of my photography to put it out into the world. I would love to have the opportunity to collect some of my work, although I'm not sure it's good enough to merit a whole book. There's more to this response, though, which will come later in the entry...

What's it like working with Columbus again, it's been almost 20 years since "Adventures in Babysitting?" Is there a "short hand" between you, since you've worked together already? - Rod

I think I already answered this a little bit, but I will elaborate by saying that he hasn't really changed at all, except that he's more confident now, in the wake of all of his enormous success. He's just as open, kind, and as much of a smartass as he's always been. I also discovered that he's a brilliant cartoonist, and he's had four kids since 1987, so now he's a dedicated father. I just hope that 18 more years don't go by before we work together again. I told him as much, too. I'm all for Jesse's idea of a rep company. I'd be there in a millisecond.

Do you think this production will convey the same spirit as the stage production? - Joel

In many, many ways, yes. I have no doubt about that. In some ways, the film will tell the story a little more clearly; no one would argue that Jonathan left a couple of things a little unclear, and Chris has taken the opportunity to strengthen those plot points in a way that should really help. Having said that, I hope the film has the same kind of emotional, visceral impact that the stage version has had for so many people over the years. It feels like it will, but I haven't seen it yet, so I can only go on my instincts.

Is it sad to realize you'll probably not be doing those scenes, especially the ones you're attached to, ever again? - Christyn

In a way, yes, but there will be a ten-year anniversary event of some sort in 2006 (yes, you heard it here first -- keep your eyes and ears peeled) so I'll get to do some of it again, plus whatever TV and/or live appearances we do in support of the film's release. And the luxury of the medium of film is that it's forever, so those scenes are captured for all time, which is a huge gift.

There's something about your writing - or your words in general, is more like it - that is so eloquent. I wonder: have you ever thought of penning a book of some sort? - Caitlin

First of all, thanks for the compliment. Secondly, yes, I have thought of penning a book. In fact, I've done more than think about it; I've gone and done it. My book is a memoir of the two most important events of my life -- being part of the original cast of Rent and losing my mother to cancer while I was in the show. It's scheduled to be published by Simon & Schuster in January, and will be called Without You. Writing it was the most challenging thing I have ever done. I have a brother, Adam Rapp, who's an accomplished author, so I'm very proud to join him on bookstore shelves. And going back to the question about my photography, I will be including some of my photos in the book.

How are newcomers Rosario and Tracie doing? Do they feel some extra stress? - Mr. K

I think they felt some extra pressure at first, but we all did our best to make them feel comfortable, and if they still felt nervous in any way, you would *never* know from the quality of their work. They couldn't have been more dedicated, full of heart, or fierce in the film. And on a selfish note, I'm so happy that I have two great new friends in my life.

How did you feel when they said that they wanted t make a movie out of RENT? Had you been keeping in touch with everyone before the movie? - Rachel

I'd kept in touch with some of the cast very closely, and others I've checked in with over the years. We've always known how one another is doing, as there's been a sort of phone or email tree. As for how I felt about the movie, there had been so many rumors over the years, but when I heard that Chris was doing it, I was hoping that my past relationship with him might prove to be helpful to me. :-) Happily, it was, and he gave me the greatest opportunity in my life: immortalizing this character on screen, and being a part of telling the best story I've had the privilege to tell.

Toughest scene to film? Most surprising moment? - Marlen

Believe it or not, no scene was "tough," because I was just so happy to be on the set. But five days of "La Vie Boheme" was physically and vocally challenging, although I could have done it for another five days, or longer. I don't think I've ever cried as much as I did during the three days we worked on "Finale B" and "Your Eyes," which was emotionally draining, but again, the work was so fulfilling that I wouldn't classify it as "tough." I'm not sure I would call anything surprising, per se, but often moments exceeded my already-high expectations. I don't really want to say much more about that, though, since I want to leave some things as surprises for you all.

Are you recording the songs again, or will you be singing to the album already recorded? - Meg

I think this was already sort of answered, but to clarify, we have recorded entirely new versions of the songs. You will be pleased with the results, I promise.

Is there going to be a soundtrack for the movie? - Lacey

Yep, and it will be out in advance of the film, although I'm not sure of the date of release. I'm sure the folks who manage the blog will let you know.

That's it for the current batch of questions. Keep them coming, and thanks again for all of your interest and support.

Anthony

Anthony,

You continue to be the model of fan-celebrity relations, and I'd like to thank you for that. I just wanted to let you know that your thread at BWW continues to grow, and that we can't wait to see you back over there as well. Thank you for being so eloquent and gracious. Those qualities are rare these days, let alone in someone in your position.

Thank you,

Jack (Cages or Wings)

Hey Anthony, I just wanted to thank you for being so dedicated to the blog and constantly coming back to share with us the exciting experience of bringing Rent to the big screen. I can't wait to see the movie. -Zac

Posted by: Zac on 07/11/05 at 11:44 AM

RENT truly is a gift.

I never had the priviledge to see the original cast onstage, nor go to New York to see the show...

I saw it once in LA, but even then I was sitting in the nosebleed section...

I've listened to the songs a million times, but the "highlights" album was all I could afford...

I'm probaby the least connected out of all the RENTheads and yet here you guys are, pulling me back into the circle. "Getting out the blogs" was definitely a great idea. I feel like I'm right there with the cast, living this fantastic experience like it was 1996 again and I was at the Nederlander Theatre. I couldn't be more thankful. Plus, Tracie and Rosario are just waaaay too cool. It's so great to know that Tracie, a fellow RENThead, actually made it to the cast list. And Rosario -- oh man, what a kick ass chick. I love her attitude and I love her spirit, and it sure was a pleasure seeing her in your video clips. I cannot wait to hear more from the cast. You guys brighten my day.

I wish I had some interesting stories to tell you about how RENT changed my life, but I don't. (I honestly became interested in it because I was flipping through a RENT book and thought, "What? Taye Diggs can sing?") I saw the show and life went on, but there's just this sense of pride that continued to hang over my head years after I left that LA theatre. Like I saw something that's going to change the world and I just felt so proud and honored have experienced it. So once again, thank you, thank you, and a million times 'thank you'. I cannot wait to see this film... the trailer alone already blew my mind.

Anthony,

Thanks so much for answering so many questions! I do have one more about the recording that will be released - will it be a complete symphonic recording (as so many of us have wanted) and include bits of dialogue (such as in the middle of Tango: Maureen and the beginning of Take Me or Leave Me)? I'm so excited that it'll be out before the movie.

A reunion? Wow, I will have to keep looking for information on that. I missed getting to see the original cast live and I would give almost anything to get that opportunity this time around. I hope I can afford the tickets and somehow get there (I live in California now, but go back to NYC once a year)...

Thanks for the info!

November 11 can't get here soon enough for me. Thanks for taking the questions, Anthony!

Anthony~

Thank you so much for your well thought out and in-depth answers! You are so eloquent, and if your blogs are any indication of what your book will be like, it is sure to be simply fantastic. I cannot wait to read it!

I have a question for you. I am sorry if it has been asked before. It has been widely noted that many of the individual members of the OBC of Rent had said, when asked, that they would never go back to the show unless the entire original cast also returned. Yet in this movie, there will be a new Mimi (who is sure to be fantastic!) and a new Joanne (who will also be fantastic!), as well as (obviously) different ensemble members. What do you think changed peoples' minds? Was it that film is an entirely different medium? That the opportunity was too great to pass up? I would be very interested in reading your thoughts on this.
Once again, thank you for being so wonderful to your fans, and please do come back and post on bww.com when you are able to. We miss you!
~Benna

PS~ I hope my question did not sound accusatory. If it did, I'm sorry, I didn't want it to. I am just really interested in your thoughts! :-)

Anthony -

Thanks, as always for your time, effort, sincerity and honesty. It's truly appreciated, and always wonderful to hear from you.

Anthony, it's a pleasure to interact with you. I have tremendous respect for you as an actor, as Mark is one of my favorite characters, period, and I give you a lot of credit for bringing Jonathan's vision to life. As a filmmaker-in-training, I feel like you've got the college-kid-has-no-money-emotional-rollercoaster down pat. So from all the film kids out there-kudos. I'll definitely be putting a copy of your book on reserve and a ten year reunion? Sweet! Best news I've heard all day. One question for you: when you get into character, how do you go about getting inside of Mark's head? I know a lot of cast write bios about the character- do you have a particular method?
Until next time! _>SuperScott*_

Posted by: SuperScott on 07/11/05 at 12:09 PM

Rent is amazing. I thank you for answering all of our questions because they mean so much to us. I do have a question. Working with everyone again, does it feel any different than before, now that you have two new people who were not OBC members?
I'm so glad that you answer the majority of these questions because it shows how much you care about all of us.

Anthony - again many, many thanks for your dedication to this blog...you could post gibberish and I think I would still squeel for the update. You owe us nothing, and yet give everything - you are amazing. I can't wait for your book, and hopefully I'll be able to make it out to NY to see the reunion!

much love

I just want to show my admiration for your dedicated work on such a special project. How many people can say they've ever been a part of something this unique, eh? I hope I won't be obnoxious to other theatre-goers, but I have to admit that when me and my friends go to see the movie for the first time we'll be dancing in the aisles to La Vie Boheme. Thank you for bringing a wonderful story to life for all of us.

P.S. I just want to tell you that I saw you in Little Shop in San Francisco, and you were great!

Posted by: Emma on 07/11/05 at 12:15 PM

Hey Anthony! I'm so excited for the movie! There aren't enough movies out there who have important messages (like RENT) and I'm so glad you'll be playing Mark. I don't think they could've picked someone better.
Yes, I am a Wicked fan...I'm confessing to that now. lol
I have two questions:

What's your favorite song in the whole show?
and
except for RENT, what is your favorite musical?

I hope everything is going well. Thanks for answering our questions!

Anthony,

I have been a fan of Rent since I was about 10 years old, when my dad brought home the soundtrack after seeing thee show. Obviously, when I first started listening I did not understand a great deal of the references. (It was a year or two before my dad finally rid me of my misconception that Angel was a woman.) Nevertheless, even as a ten-year-old I was touched by the music as I am today, seven years later. I finally was able to see the show last year and was amazed that I could still be so moved even after listening to the soundtrack hundreds of times.

I am and have been for years a huge fan of not only Rent itself, but Jonathan Larson and the OBC. Thank you so much for being such an inspiration!

I have one quick question, and if you don't answer it I will understand. You mentioned that you keep in touch with everyone in the OBC. While I am certain that Rosario and Tracie will be amazing (and I love them both already), do you know what Daphne and Fredi's feelings were as the only OBC leads not to be asked to reprise their roles? I know that a similar question was already asked, but I was just curious.

Thanks for the post Anthony!

Mark is my favorite character in RENT because I can relate so much to him- Which is your favorite character other than Mark? Thanks so much for bringing the original Mark back and for all the behind-the-scenes footage! Sounds like you really had a blast with the film- can't wait to see it on the big screen!

Anthony -

Never have I seen an actor who communicates so directly with fans, and I think your dedication is terrific! I am SO excited for the movie, the 10th anniversary happenings (whatever they may be), and your book. You're a truly amazing person. Thank you!

- Laura

P.S. I thought of a quick question if you're up for more - will a new song be composed just for the movie to be eligable for the Best Original Song Academy Award (like "You Must Love Me" from Evita)?

Anthony--

I just wanted to say thank you for answering those questions, and that I cannot wait to read your book. I had been hearing about it on the IMDb boards (yes, a lot of stuff gets out on those...) but I wasn't sure, and I never really checked it out until now. Without You is a brilliant title! Its so wonderful that you and the rest of the cast have devoted some of your time to inform us about how the movie is going, I don't really think anyone has ever done that for their fans before. I'll help you get more comments. Maybe you can beat Idina.

ANTHONY!!!
In my book, you are worth a million comments, and if i had the time i would leave them all for you.

You are the epitome of a perfect fan-celebrity relations, but i was wondering if anyone has ever approached you in a negative way about RENT? It seems that most are positive, but there might be room for disagreement (not on my part) about the show. Just curious. Thanks for your time.

with love an adoration (as usual)

Anthony,

I am so glad that you have been posting here and answering questions. i have been following this movie nonstop and i truly believe that it will be wonderful and will fully capture the spirit that is RENT. I never really had big doubts as much as some other people had, but now i am completely sure of it. I am a big fan of your works as well as the other cast memebers. i look forward to November 11th.

But i do have one question for you (well, like a split question). I was just wondering, how much do you yourself relate with the character of Mark? How much do you think the character of Mark was taken out of Jonathan's personalitiy?

Thanks for keeping in such great contact with us fans and i look forward to your next post.

You’re truly amazing and I’m going to have to buy your book when it comes out! Anyway…

I’m not sure what you can do about this but its something I thought to Bring up, I love the Video Journals that are kept on this blog and I am sure you guys most likely have a few different ones that have not been show on here or what have you and my request, I guess request is a good thing to call it, is that when RENT comes out on DVD that you guys include theses little bits of filming in the DVD as extra’s because seeing you guys and how you are together really makes my day better, because you all are so amazing. Like I said before I’m not sure what you can do about it, but it would mean a lot to me if you could maybe bring it up with the right people, or if it is already something that’s going to happen that’s wonderful too.

Anyway you’re so amazing I wanted to thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us.

Anthony-

Thanks for answering some questions. Looking forward to the 10th anniversary special event and the soundtrack to the anticipated film and of course the film itself. I plan on having the opportunity to meet all of you at the NY premiere for the film. But thanks so much for letting us know information about this, through the blogs and originally through BWW. This is the first film to ever have all this interaction.

The anticipation is killing us and we have another 4 months to go!!

Thanks again

I am so excited for the movie!! The trailer looked amazing!! Thanks for always keeping us informed!! Can't wait!! Thanks!

November 11 will not come soon enough!

I heard that you and the other cast members had to lose weight for the film in order to look younger. Was it hard? What did it involve?

Anthony-
can i just say wow?! it's so amazing of you to be so nice and to oblige all us fans here by commenting on the blog.

I for one am so excited for this movie. I first heard of rent when i was 15. six years later, here I am, as big a renthead as ever, and planning to move to new york after college to work on broadway thanks in part to people like you and shows like Rent which showed me more then ever what i wanted to do with the rest of my life. THANK YOU :)

my question: In addition to Rent, I'm a huge fan of your cd "Look Around". I wish I had the ability to write songs the way you do. I was just wondering when/if you might have another cd coming out? thanks so much for your time!

Anthony,

You are the heart and soul of RENT. I didn't see you or any of the OBC in the show, but I've seen it some million other times and had the privilege of seeing you perform live in Pittsburgh a few times as well. Thank you for making this musical, this movie, this story so alive and strong... through ten years, through death, through the many trials and tribulations and triumphs you personally and the show as a whole underwent... thank you for "immortalizing" it as you said so well. We are all DYING in anticipation of the film... I know about thirty people who have seen Bewitched multiple times just to catch the trailer in the theatre, and not watch it on our computers anymore.

122 days guys...

Hi there, Anthony.

It's so beautiful and obvious that your heart is very much with this show and with this process, so I was just wondering what experience, on set or off, in the filming has touched you the most.

I haven't had the chance to comment before now, but now that I can, I just wanted to thank you for keeping everyone up-to-date and smiling with your posts here. I always look forward to reading -or seeing, as the case may be- what you have to say and eagerly await your book (and the tenth anniversary production, of course!) Thank you so much for being such a great person, and best of luck in the upcoming months.

Hi, I'm eargerly awaitng the release of this move in London, and I am gutted I have to wait til February? I just wanted to know if you guys wil be coming to London to promote, or to the opening?
I know you can't go to every major city obviously, but it would be great to see you, as there is a massive RENT scene here too!!!

I'm really enjoying your entries, you clearly take the tijme to respond to your fans, which is very gracious. Thanks

Charlotte, 22, London.

I think you should stop the blog. You're making me far too obsessed.

Honestly, this has been so fantastic to read (I can't believe I'm finally getting around to leaving a comment NOW) and it's great for bringing the cast and the true RENT devotees together.

This has nothing to do with the movie, but...are you EVER going to bring RENT back to Toronto so I can see it?!?!?!?!? I am a desperate child.

Anthony, you're my hero and I love listening to you on the soundtrack. You're so talented and a fantastic Mark. The rest of the original cast is incredible, too (Idina is my idol!) and I can't wait to see Rosario and Tracie. I was a bit skeptical about Rosario, but she seems to be fitting in so well and I have to trust Chris' decision. The trailer almost made me cry. It was a perfect harmony of music and image.

You can bet I'll be at Silvercity Newmarket on November 11th, with anyone I can manage to drag along. Thanks so much!

Michelle

P.S. Okay, this has nothing to do with RENT, but Aaron Lohr, I love you! Newsies is my favourite movie and you're such an amazing dancer! Do you still keep in touch with the guys? I can't believe you're in RENT! I love you!

Posted by: Michelle on 07/11/05 at 02:56 PM

Anthony, thank you so much for all your frequent updates on the blog!!!! It's great that you are so dedicated to keeping us RENTheads in touch about the movie- nobody else is as dedicated as you. Thank you so much for answering all these questions!!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!

I think it's wonderful that you answered everyone's questions! I've never seen you in anything before, but I've heard you on the OBCR of Rent and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and I love your voice! I'm so thrilled they're making the Rent movie, I'll be there opening night in my Rent shirt. :)

Anthony,

I just think it's amazing how you take time out of your schedule to answer our questions and post on the blog. Thanks so much for everything you've done for Rent. You're amazing.

And wow, didn't that sound sappy?

I can't wait for the movie. Thanks again.

Anthony -

I just want to thank you...and all the OBC for bringing this wonderful musical to the big screen. I've been a fan since I did a Broadway review show and performed I'll Cover You. I finally got a chance to see a touring company in February of last year and I've been blown away ever since. Can't wait for it to hit my town.

PS...I loved you in Hedwig! :-)

Wow! Thank you! I find that the blogs are very comforting in the sense that they keep us Rentheads up to date. I love how you said that Rent being made into a movie is a gift; it really is. I think it's a gift in many ways but the main way is for us Rentheads who haven't seen the show on stage and finally get to. Another big way is all the new Rentheads that I know will come of this movie. I know that years from now, my grandchildren will be begging to see Rent again on DVD. I can't wait to see it and I'm sure it'll be a life changing experience for me. As I've said before, I've never seen Rent on stage so I am close to dying from excitement!

Well, you said to keep the questions coming so here's one (well, two really) for you:

How does it feel knowing that you're going to be immortalized in one of the best musicals? And how does it feel knowing that because of this movie, you'll be adding to the already enormous number of Rentheads?

I can't wait to see this movie. I think what I'm most looking forward to is seeing YOU in another big part. I loved "Adventures in Babysitting" and when I watched "Beautiful mind" and recognized you, I fliped. I think that you're such a talented actor who is much too unknown. Of course the fact that it's most of the OBC is sooooo mind-blowing as well. All of you are such genuine people and you're all so talented. I feel like through the blogs, I've gotten to know all of you in a little way. Now...if only I could convince a director to make "You're a good man, Charlie Brown" into a movie...Once again, all my love, all the best, and all my thanks.

Looking foward to the CD Soundtrack, your new Book, your promotional appearances, the Movie (of course) and the 10th year "Rent" reunion!! Thanks for being a "best friend" to Rent fans all these years:) All the Best!

Thanks taking so much time to let us know your point of view.
I m sure your work will be as good as it was on the stage.
We love you... really

Hey Anthony!
Wow! Thanks for answering so many of our questions- you are such a giving and incredible person (I know I write all these praises all the time..but you never cease to amaze me so I just keep writing it haha. ALWAYS know how much I (and the other fans) appreciate you and your work.)

Congrats on finishing filming! November can't come soon enough. I'm so excited that you have a book coming out! I'm definitely buying it as soon as it hits stores-your words are so poetic, heartfelt, and stirring. And I'm glad your up for the rep company, I really think you all should do it. Also, THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY! If you come back to the show for an anniversary performance I might just die! (in a good way haha) I would have to see it! But, man, there will be so many hoping to see you all perform live..I hope you do it on more than one night. Well enough gushing about that heh.

So..questions. Hmm. You've been so great with keeping us informed it's almost difficult to think of things to ask. almost. heh. Thank you in advance for any questions you answer next time (mine or otherwise)
-What is your favorite song from RENT, why?
-Why did they choose not to have the song Happy New Year in the movie? Was it just too difficult, or did it not work with plans? (as long as you're ok with it not being in, I'll trust your judgement;)).
-Was it odd to have a more realistic setting instead of the sparse, more abstract enviroment of the theater? Did it help/hurt you?
-What was it like shooting the film with its out-of-sequence scenes as opposed to the theater's chronological style. Which do you prefer?
-Were there many changes to vocal arrangements and music? I know it will now have a more rock feel to it, but were any lines changed/added or reposistioned? (And, by the way, I'm glad you seem happier with the final cd this time.)
-On a non-Rent related note, what projects will you be doing in the future? I'd love to see you in any new plays/musicals.

Well, Thanks very much for all that you've done and are doing for us RENTheads. And, although Idina may be winning number-wise with comments, I hope you feel the love and respect every comment for you contains-measure in love.
All my support and love,
Chelsea

I figure since two of the cast members have already posted their answers to questions and we don't know who will be next, I will post questions to each of the remaining principals (and the director) and hope to god they answer my questions.

Rosario: You must have been under a lot of pressure to perform well because your character is so important to the plot. What do you think was the biggest challenge that you had to live up to?

Chris: Being the director of so many children's films and somewhat adult films (Mrs. Doubtfire), this must why do you think you wanted to take up the challenge that was RENT considering its material was so controversial?

Idina: Having seen you in Wicked, I am still spellbound you had it in you to play Maureen. You have this amazing talent and fortunately Jonathan saw it. What has been the best part of playing a character whose relationship involves a real life situation that actually happened to Jonathan?

Jesse: Moving from Law & Order back to RENT must have been quite an interesting change of venue. What was it like getting back into this character who gave you the chance to show the world what it was like to be a musical theater actor and not just a TV character?

Tracie: Playing Joanne must have been a fun role. Did you study anything in particular to create Joanne in a different way than the original Joanne did?

SAVING the best for last...

Wilson: I met you a few years ago when I saw you in Eli's Coming (You wrote Many thanx for your support WJHeredia on my program). In part due to that I have a new found appreciation for tony award winning actors. You play my favorite character, in fact in high school, I named myself Angel for just that reason. What do you think the biggest challenge you have had playing a transvestite has been?

GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Will the soundtrack be a double CD like the original show? Are there going to be any major extras on the CD? Anthony has said it will have a major rock feel to it, but are we going to have dialogue on this pair of CDs?

Many thanks to those who have worked on this site. Also, thank you to those people who have helped to make Jonathan's dream an absolutely amazing reality. I say truly NO DAY BUT TODAY. You guys have truly created a miracle. I hope Jonathan does not turn in his grave. Break a leg and let us know if there is anything further in the works for any of you in terms of movie musicals. Thanks!

P.S. I can't wait until the 10th Anniversary, here's hoping!

Mahalo Anthony so much for taking time to respond to fans! Every time I check this board I get more and more excited about the movie release!!! It's outstanding :-)

I can't wait to see the movie seeing some obc members is outstanding!!!

-A question for Jesse...
1. I've heard that gay marriage will be covered in the movie? Is that true? Also how do you think a mainstream audience (those who are unfamiliar with RENT) will respond to a gay couple?

mahalo Jesse! PS i think that you are amazing on the Rent CD, absolutely amazing

Posted by: Kimo on 07/11/05 at 06:41 PM

wow thanks for posting, i live for these. I knew that there would be something in 2006, but i couldnt find anything about it online. My frien Dori said the OBC would be returning maybe..idk if im right, i dont want to give it away if its a surprise either..but i really hope its that because ive never had the opportunity to see the OBC. I heard that its only for a week though-- please think about doing it for longer then that for some of us who wont be able to do it on a certain date..we all love you, be good to us :).

good luck, cannot wait until november 11th

Anthony--

First of all, thank you soooo much for answering all of these questions. Yor dedication to this blog and to your fans is incredibly sweet and inspiring.

When you were playing Seymour at the Ahmanson in LA, I was fortunate to meet you briefly. Unfortunately, I was too busy giggling like a bloody idiot and thinking "OMFG I'M STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ANTHONY RAPP!!!!!!!!!" to actually tell you how much your performace in RENT has touched me. Everyone has their favorite chracter, of course. Mine has always been Mark. Before I saw the show, I would sit in my car breathing in Jonathan's music...when you sang, or when I read Mark's dialogue in the script...it just struck a chord with me. I saw, and still see, so much of him in me. And now, to finally see you playing the part (I never got the chance to see RENT at the Nederlander)...it's a dream come true. Thank you for the truth, passion, and simple humanity that you bring to Mark. It really is the most wonderful thing in the world to me. Thank you.

It's astounding how interactive the cast is with its audience. I have never seen a anything like this before.

So, if you had to tell one person with no pre-knowledge, about RENT, what would you tell them?

Anthony,
Thanks so much for answering all those questions! IT's really great that you and the rest of the cast are taking the time to answer our questions.

Can't wait for the movie & its soundtrack.

Thanks again!

Hello Anthony! Thank you very much for the information and for taking the time to post on this blog.

I'm so glad the majority of the OBC was brought back for the movie, as I got scared when hearing rumors that popular signers and whatnot would be cast. Plus, putting it on film was a little freaky, because I was hearing crazy rumors about plot changes and whatnot. But, from all I've heard here and elsewhere, it sounds as though it's going to be great, and I'm so glad to be able to see you, Idina, Adam, and everyone doing the show on the big screen! I know the film will be spectaculor!

I can't wait for the RENT 10-year anniversary! I hope I'd be able to get to NYC at the time of it! :)

I also have to say, I absolutely adore you. You are one of my favorite singers and I love your cd...Living Alive, Just Some Guy, and Always are my favorite songs...though I love very song very much.

I contacted your management last year in wondering about you coming to speak at my college for an even for Friends & Allies (a branch of Pride) but unfortunately it was when you would be filming Rent at the time, so you couldn't. And I graduated in May, so I can't take any more action to see if you can come next year :( But while I'm still in the city I'm going to try to stay in contact with some people in Pride and Allies and see what they think. I wish you could have come to campus though...that would have been great.

Luv Always,

Samantha

You are absolutely

wonderful.

This year has been my

RENT

year, if you will.

I had the privilage to see it for the first time

(front row, **gape**)

thanks to the $20 rush seating

instilled by Mr. Larson.

The show is incredibly

POWERFUL

and if that energy is harnessed

in this film,

the true

essence

of RENT

will be experienced

forever.

Thank you.

A book? A book! *proceeds to do a happy dance* Thats wonderful! Congrats!

Um...this question might be a bit wierd, but my little brother brought it up the other day and and...yeah. I got a copy of the Rent bible and I was looking through the libretto. I got to the La Vie Boheme section and my brother was looking over my shoulder (because he's a closet Renthead who's too "cool" to admit he's into musicals BUT when I asked him what he wanted for his birthday that falls on Nov. 15, he said he wants me to take him to see Rent ^_^)he points at the "dancing on tables" pictures.

"Thats alot of people."

"Yeah."

"You think they ever had problems with tables collapsing?"

"I'm sure they're heavy duty tables."

"Yeah, but still!"

So, um, yeah, tables, La Vie Boheme...has there ever been any mishaps?

Anyway, muchas gracias for the update! And again, many congrats on the book! Not to mention, I just found out that I MIGHT be seeing Rent on B-way next week. I think I just might have to do another happy dance!

*runs off to find a sturdy table*

I'm not sure if you read this far down the comments, but I just wanted to say that I saw you in Little Shop at the Ahmanson in Los Angeles and you were great! And I met you after the show and you were the coolest guy. But keeping in touch with your fans makes you even cooler.

Anyway, I go back to New York once a year and always catch Rent. I'd love it if you guys came back to the show for the 10th.

Posted by: Richard on 07/11/05 at 08:16 PM

I just have to say how thrilled I am that RENT is being made for the big screen! I saw it in NYC in 1997, and then another three times! I am so thrilled that so much of the original cast has participated in the film. I'm looking forward to it!

Anthony-

Thank you so much for all the wonderful answers. I have a question. Do you think you will still be doing work at colleges around the country in the future? I hope you do because you have inspired so many young people. I met you 2 years ago at a college in Ohio and I never in a million years would have thought I could meet someone as down to earth and inspiring as you. I am so grateful for the time I got to spend with you working on an audition song and talking with you. that day truly changed my life in so many ways and I hope other theatre students have the chance to work with you.

I am so excited to see this movie that I almost let out a little scream when I saw the trailer at the begining of Bewitched. Anthony, I think you are amazing and I can't wait to see you in this movie.

Anthony, You probably don't remember me I PMed you once on BWW my name was NessaroseHeredia. Just wanted to say how excited I am to hear about your book. I own your brother Adam's play Nocturne. Is it true that you were in it? Thank you so much for being so caring and reaching out to all of us. You are a great inspiration to me.
By the way, this is a poem I wrote after I lost my aunt to breast cancer. I've been told it is good if ever you wanted to have a look http://allpoetry.com/Poem/756931

Anthony!

What a great Blog, I a SO EXCITED for the movie, i have been sucked back into the RENT world. Can't wait for your book and I am counting the days till November 11th! I was in London years ago for RENT and besides the incredible seats, my highlight was meeting you.

The next year, I was lucky to catch You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, another one of my all time favorites. I still listen to the soundtrack frequently.

Keep up the great work.

:)

Anthony - Thanks for the great update! Im excited to hear about your book! It sounds amazing!!! You truly are a great actor and singer. I really love listenting to everone on the OBC recording of RENT!

Jesse - Wow... i just have to start off by saying... YOU ROCK MY WORLD! Everytime i listen to I'll Cover You (reprise) ... i cry.. you really move me. Just by listening to your voice *having never been able to see you in the stage production* i can feel so many different emotions at once, and i honestly feel Tom Collins pain.

Question: 1. Do you feel that the changes made to the show have actually made the story (if this is even POSSIBLE) better?
2. Would you mind telling us which songs were cut from the show? I've been trying find this out! Im dying to know!!!!!
3. Could you tell Idina that i fell in love with her talent the moment i heard her in Wicked... and i cannot wait to see her play Maureen... i love listening to her on the CD as well.. hell i love the entire OBC!! haha thanks!

This is so awesome. I love the fact that you guys are so connected to your fans. It rocks my world. Ok well keep up the good work, with the movie and the blogs. I am sure this film will be amazing, just as amazing and inspiring as the play was nine years ago. Even if you don't read the comments this far down, thought you should know how cool I think all of you are for talking to your fans. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that we really appreciate hearing from you and you answering our questions. Ok well stay awesome and don't forget to dance on tables as often as humanly possible. Take care.

Anthony (or do you prefer Tony? Probably not, Anthony's an awesome name as it is), thanks so very much for making us feel good about posting replies and making us feel like our voices matter out on the big web. I cannot wait to read your memoir!
Do you think that you will ever work behind the scenes in film or theatre as a director or writer? I think it'd be yet another creative outlet for you to ooze talent from (and I mean that in the nicest way {I'm trying SO hard not to be too jealous but it's really impossible!}) and I would love to see what you can do through others (in a way).
Thank you so much again for answering our questions again!

It's really great of you to take the time to answer questions like this. There isn't really a way to say it without being "corny," but thank you for making Mark real. I've been in a lot of shows, and I've seen a lot of shows on and off broadway, but I can honestly say that no character has ever meant more to me than Mark.

I'm not sure if you may recall a director/actor named Jeff Steitzer. I don't know exactly how you met him, but he's my uncle and told me just the other day that he had met you. If you do read this, I'd like to pass on his sentiments of congratulations that, if he had the chance to offer you personally, I know he would.

Thank you again for creating art in your character that is so meaningful to me and countless others.

Hi Anthony !!

I've really enjoyed your blogs on the film and life in general. I'm looking forward to the release of the film and to the publishing of your book !! You are a very eloquent writer...your sincerity and enthusiasm leaps from the written page !!

Speaking of your bro Adam, I just saw his production of "Red Light Winter" here at Steppenwolf and enjoyed it immensely. The play is extremely witty and the dialog is excellent. I enjoyed his direction and the actors who portray the three characters are unflinching and fearless as they tackles some very rough stuff. Its a great show !!

I remember meeting you at a party after you MC'd the Focus on the Arts at Highland Park HS quite a few years ago. You were as sincere and humble in person as you are in your blogs !!!

I wish you the best in everything you do !!!

Take care,

Vic

I think this blog has been of a huge benefit to this film. I know myself and many other RENTheads were a bit skeptical about the idea of a RENT film. I personally feared if the emotion, candor and integrity of the story would be able to be maintained across the media of film, but through this blog my fears have been completely extinguished and now I am just counting down the minutes until the opening of the film.

Thank you to the cast, Chris and the Larson family for letting the fans be so involved in this process.

Hey Anthony,

Thank you once again for taking the time out to allow us, the fans, to feel so much more connected to this film. You have been so great all throughout this process of keeping us updated and informed. I absolutely cannot wait for 11/11/05, to have the opportunity to make 'RENT' so much more accessible to all of its loyal fans. Good luck with everything!

P.S. I am thrilled that there will be some sort of 10th anniversary celebration. Could you fill us in on what that might be?

Anthony-
This is going to sound like the other 100+ comments for your entry, but first of all, thank you for taking the time to write to all of us. It's wonderful to be able to know that the actors really want the fans to be assured of the quality of the new movie.

My question for you: For aspiring musicians (like myself) and actors, what would you recommend that we do to get to Broadway? It's my dream to play on the stages of NYC, and I was wondering if you had any advice on how to get there.

Thank you so much again for your time!

I'm so excited for the movie! And i hope it's a s good as the stage show was! I went to see it in 1996 and it was amazing, i also went to see "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" in 1999 because Kristin Chenoweth id one of my favorite actresses (along with Idina Menzel)! You were so amazing in both musicals! You add so much to these shows because your voice is so unique and amazing! Me and my friends Kyliegh who is very much into musical theater just like me sing songs from all your shows everyday and we have a count down until the movie comes to theaters...91 more days!!! I wish you all the success and luck in the world, you're amazing and i dream to perform with you one day!

Anthony,

What has reuniting with all the original cast members been like, without Daphne Rubin-Vega? I had the wonderful fortune to see RENT in 1996 with all original cast members and the chemistry was so awesome. Did it feel like something was missing? I'm sure Rosario Dawson brings her own gifts to the table, but since you and Daphne were with RENT since the workshop, did it feel strange?

I'm so happy that you all came together to do the movie version of Rent. I am literally counting down the days until it comes out, and I've annoyed my parents about the whole thing. I do, however, have some questions that I hope that you could answer for me: I was wondering why Fredi Walker and Daphne Rubin-Vega aren't in it? Is your band going to record, again? What do we have in store for Anthony Rapp? Thanks for reading.

Posted by: Jon on 07/13/05 at 10:27 AM

Anthony, dont worry about the comment war with Idina, you know we all still love you, and you've always been my favorite character. Thank you so much for everything you've done, doing, and... yes. This is one of the few times I'm really looking forward to summer being over, for the Rent movie. Thank you.

Greetings and bonjour Anthony,

I can't believe that you've answered my question I'm so pleased with it.

I can't wait to see 'Rent' because I'm a fan of the movie's director Chris Columbus. I've saw his films lately especially 'Home Alone' and of course everybody's all-time favourite 'Adventures in Babysitting'.

And also your book 'Without You' and it's going to be great when it comes out in January next year. I'm looking forward to read the book.

Send the Rent cast members all my love.

Yours truly,

Lwazi

Anthony-

Thank you SO very much for taking the time to post yet again on the blog. Thank you especially for the information on the 10th anniversary event (can't wait) and your upcoming book (also can't wait, and congrats!)

I absolutely cannot believe how much interaction the cast of the film is having with us, the RENTheads, prior to its release. I'm sure this is unprecedented. I can only hope that you all know how much it means to us to hear from you! I am confident that nearly all apprehension some of us RENTheads had when news of the film first came out has been completely erased thanks to all of you.

I hope you are taking the summer to relax before the film promotions begin!

Thank you again.

Hi Anthony, I'd like to start off by just saying how much respect I have for you, and all of your cast and crew mates for putting in so much effort and dedication for your fans by doing these blogs etc. That truly says a lot about the general attitude of this cast and I for one have complete trust and gratitude towards you all... Now on with my question...
I am an eighteen year old Canadian, planning on attending university next year double majoring in English and Theatre... I have to get a teaching degree first, but after school I want to move to the states to pursue a theatre career... I know... "so do a lot of people" but I was just wondering if you had any advice for an eighteen year old aspiring singer/actor. Any tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated coming from one of my favorite actors ;)!

Posted by: Sheena on 07/13/05 at 09:59 PM

Anthony... I think you are the best!

When the premiere will take place?????

Posted by: Pepe on 07/13/05 at 11:16 PM

Hey Anthony,
I just wanted to say, I'm a big fan. Well actually until about two years ago, I never even knew who you were. Don't get me wrong, I don't live in New York, I live in Florida, so it's not like we have a major theatre district down here. I was in a touring production of "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" with my community theatre's Yourng People's Theatre Advanced Troupe and I was Charlie Brown, and to learn the words to music I cannot just look at it and know it, I have to hear it over and over again, so I purchased the revival soundtrack and I was listening to it and reading the insert and I was thinking to myself, "Who is this guy?" Well I looked on the sheet and it said Anthony Rapp, and I was amazed by your voice. It is incredibly good. Well I never really thought about that for very long becasue I had other things to do and get ready for concerning the aforementioned show, and several others I was in, but just recently I was watching a movie and the "Rent" trailer come on and I was ecstatic. So I went online to see who was in it, and Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, and You were the only people I had actually heard of. (I'm a big EWicked" fan, so that's how I knew of Idina.) Anyway, I've downloaded a few of your songs onto my computer, and I have to say, you have immense talents (as if you didn't know.) You are someone I look up to a great deal and I hope you do well in your career.

-Joe

P.S. When were you guys filming in San Francisco? I was over there in mid-June.

Posted by: Joe on 07/14/05 at 12:31 AM

Thank you so much for answering my question!
The rumors about you are true- you definitely are dedicated to your fanbase. :D I just got a part in You're A Good Man Charlie Brown (Sally) so I just started listening to the cd of that about a week and a half ago. Your voice and acting skills wowed me once again :D Have an awesome day, I'm counting down the days til the rent movie :D

Anthony-

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer questions like this. This show is very near and dear to me and I've very much enjoyed following the film's progress. I've loved the show since I saw the workshop performance and it has been amazing to see the show and its performers evolve and grow. My friends and I were a few of the notorious 'squatters' outside the Nederlander for 20$ tickets back in 1996, and though we've since gone our separate ways, we plan on getting together again and camping outside a movie theater for old time's sake. I cannot put into words how much Rent has affected my life, and how many people it's brought together who would otherwise have nothing in common. Its truly *amazing* and I trust that no expense was spared in preserving that incredible power and energy. Thank you for your updates and the peace of mind they bring and I am looking forward to seeing everyone's hard work pay off.

One more thing: I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask, but I was wondering if the movie will be somehow dedicated to Jonathan, or perhaps some of the proffit sent to his foundation or BCEFA? I was just thinking how neat it would be to take advantage of having a high profile director and good publicity...

Take care, Anthony, and I wish you the best of luck :)

The first time I saw you was in a film called "School Ties". I loved the movie, and I thought you were a stand out among what Hollywood would call a bunch of heartthrobs with questionable talent (some of whom have gone on to prove themselves). In all of the things I've read about you, you never mention it. I thought it was a very good film. Any thoughts?

LOVE THE TRAILER!! I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER!

JUST ONE QUESTION, NEAR THE END OF THE TRAILER THERE IS A GUY SINGING ON STAGE AT A BAR, AND A GIRL WATCHING HIM. I CAN'T TELL WHO THEY ARE?? I NEED HELP!

Posted by: jamie on 07/14/05 at 02:41 PM

Look closely.

That guy - that's Adam Pascal. Playing Roger, you know. He's singing to Aprill; it's a flashback scene.

Dear Anthony Rapp,

You are my hero and I can only hope to be as great of an actor as you. I have been acting since 10th grade (about 2 years now)and my dream is to someday perform Rent. Rent has touched me in so many ways. It was the musical that finally showed people it is ok to be what every you are. Rent is truly the musical that Reinvented Broadway. So I just wanted to say thanks for all you have done.

Oh my gosh, Anthony, thank you so much!
Anthony, you are one of my idols. I know you're probably weirded out by everyone fawning over you, but you have really inspired me in so many ways. Your honesty and openess as a performer is really incredible. The inflections in your voice and how REAL everything you are saying or singing sounds is something that most actors couldn't acheive even with years and years of work and training. Your dedication to this show is so inspiring!
Also, the fact that you are "out" is awesome. I'm straight, but my gay friends are always so happy when I mention you. Your honesty inspires them as well as me. Also, the fact that you continue to post and post answers to questions even when you don't have to is so nice. It shows what a lovely person you are.
The best thing about Rent is it makes you FEEL. You'll feel happy or sad or frustrated or horrified but you'll leave feeling renewed and shiny and glorious. SO much of that comes from you.
Um, did I mention that you are absolutely beautiful? Yeah, that too! :-)
You're my hero, Mr. Rapp. Always stay you and we love you!
Love always,
Elizabeth

Hi Anthony, I just wanted to give you and the rest of the cast praises for your work so far. I went to go and see bewitched I saw the RENT trailer. I fliped. I had seen it before on my computer but seeing it on the big screen I got so emotional I cried. Congrats to you and the cast for the much needed reconization for your performances. I wish you the best of luck in what you do and give all my best.

Hey Anthony,

First of all i want to thankyou for answering those questions and secondly i want to ask a question; you said there would be a 2006 10 year reunion of some sort. Could that possibly mean that there will be a reunion show like on the anniversary of Jonathans death? Please let me know if there is any possibility so i can book my flight to NYC now ;-)! Thanks again!

Peace and Love,
~Kirsten
P.S. I'm so happy to hear that you will have a book out soon. I can't wait to read it!

I just saw the film adaptation of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I thought it was done well. Have you seen it? How would you compare the film adaptation of RENT with that one?
Thanks!
P.S. My wife and I sent you a letter about 10 years ago when we saw you in RENT in NY. When we came back to see you again, you said that you read it and remembered we'd been in a local production of INTO THE WOODS. Thanks for honoring your fans!

Anthony-

When I first discovered Rent, I remember thinking, "Hey! That guy sounds like Charlie Brown..."

And sure enough, the voice that had played endlessly in my CD player in middle school was rocking out through my speakers yet again in high school.

I'm sure you hear this a lot, but you are SO TALENTED and I am SO EXCITED that Rent will be appearing on the big screen. I almost cried during the preview just thinking about all the people that will be touched by the musical that changed my life. Thank you.

-Molly

P.S. I went to Interlochen Performing Arts camp too!

First and foremost, i would like to say that i love your voice. It's amazing to even fathom that you could have such a unique voice, it really puts you aside from the other character's personalities and what not.

I have a question for you in terms of your filming, are you planning on making any more movies? any offers? you should be flooded with them if not!

I look forward to seeing you on the screen on the 11th! Everytime i see bewitched i start singing with you guys during previews! :]

Anthony,

I know you have heard this before but I just wanted to thank you and the rest of the cast as well for being so dedicated to the blogs and connecting with the fans, I think that is great that you guys could be so busy with the movie and still take time out to talk to the fans, I think that is truly amazing. Thank You :)

Went I first became interested in Rent, my 10th grade English teacher introduced me and she went on to tell me that she'd had a huge crush on you. I really didn't understand why she seemed embaressed then I found out why in an interview you did a few years ago. I hope you don't mind me asking but what was it like being a well known face and coming out? I mean it was scary and really hard for me and no one knows who I am.
Ok one more quesition and I will leave you alone. ^-^ What advice do you have to someone who has yet to have any vocal training but wants more then anything to play in Rent one day?

Anthony,

Very glad to hear about a 10th Anniversary Event!! (I was waiting for you guys to say anything, ANYTHING regarding something of that nature.) PLEASE have more than one performance on Broadway (I live in Miami) so that I can see you perform the role you were BORN to perform. Best Mark ever! Just an idea: maybe extend the number of rows for $20 lottery seats to celebrate 10 years?? That would be awesome!

11.11 --- can't wait!!!!!!!!!!! (I really CAN NOT!)

Hi Anthony;

Hmm, I'm not sure if you actually read through all these comments, so I'm just hoping you'll see mine! :D

I just had to say thank you so much for connecting with the fans. RENT means so much to me, and it's obvious how much you care for it, too. I know a lot of RENT fans, and we all have disagreements about who's good for what role, who likes who, etc., but I do not know ONE person that doesn't love you. To me, you're the only Mark, and it's such a dream come true to be able to see you on screen as him. That's the great thing about this movie: being able to see Anthony Rapp kick off La Vie Boheme, or do the Tango: Maureen, or whatever.

Anyways, thanks so much, I have a feeling this movie's gonna be a big success.

Oh, I almost forgot to add, Road Trip was on TV last night, and I was only able to catch the scene where you're impersonating the professor on the phone. Ahahaha, it was golden! Love your scenes in that movie.

Posted by: Lyn on 07/18/05 at 08:22 AM

Hey Anthony! Thanks so much for such an in depth blog! Definitely a good one and your opening paragraph had me cracking up, you're such a down to earth guy! I'm so excited for Rent and can not wait! But I'm sure you've noticed that almost every Broadway fan is! lol.

I'd also like to second the thanks for connecting with your fans. Just taking the time to answer some of our questions really means a lot to me! It's so fun to know that you have the same feelings and excitement towards this production as we do! Thanks and viva la vie boheme!

xxLiz

I just wanna say thank you for being with Rent as long as you have, I have yet to see you perform in it but that shall change when the movie comes out. I almost got to see you in the tour of Little Shop when you were in San Diego but after Rent and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels just having left I didn't have the money to. I have a very off track question for you, what was it like doing X-Files?? If I remember correctly it was the episode in Florida looking for the fountain of youth but my memory isn't what it used to be. Keep up the good work and look very forward to seeing you and the rest of the cast on "the big screen." Oh will the 10th anniversary shindig be available on Dvd like the Les Mis 10th was and would it be a concert or like an actuall performance?? Cause I did get to see Daphne when she joined the tour in LA a few years back and would love to see her as Mimi again. Hope I haven't taken up too much of your time.

Anthony,

This is so repetitive, but I wish to say thank you for answering our questions. Its great to see your in-depth insight on what you believe in and of course, what you want us to believe in.

I have to say that the roles you choose somehow have something all in common: they are people coping with the worst of life. Has any of these roles you have chosen, when you began with Mark in RENT, made you choose roles in other broadway shows similar?

If the question is not answered, perhaps one day it will--who knows? But thank you for reading. :)

Thanks to you I had a huge crush on the character of Mark. I am so excited for the movie to come out so that I can have that crush all over again. Maybe in the movie Maureen will decide to go back to Mark! Just kidding. Thanks to all of you who have returned to make this fantastic show leap into the mainstream. This show will always be immotalized in my memory and in my heart. It will be nice to be able to pop in the dvd too! Have a great day and I can't wait to see what you will be doing next.

Your character was easily my favorite character in the original broadway production. I have seen the show 3 times on broadway now, and the touring production twice. No one else has been able to play the role as well as you did it originally, and I think that is going to show through in the movie. Your dedication to this role seems to be truly heartfelt, and Im sure Jonthan would be pleased to have you doing this role in the movie. Can't wait for November!

hey! i am so glad you answered those questions! I didn't know you were a photographer? so am i! well not professionly. anthony rapp, anthony rapp, anthony rapp. Honestly, you are my hero. Everything you do inspires me (i feel very weird saying things like this, it's not something i normally do...)

anyway... your portrayal of mark inspired me to get back way back into film after kind of fading out of that aspect of my life even after attending a really important film camp.

the fact that you're a photographer just makes me happy, since i love photography and it's such a humongous thing to me. Of course, i am a mere amateur (being not of an age to partake in the professional world), but it is just nice to hear that you enjoy this very enjoyable activity as well.

i love that you've written a memoir. it takes a certain kind of person to be willing to share personal things with the world in such a format, and in their own words. I believe a person's style of writing just says so much about who they are.

you are an amazing actor. I saw you in "Little Shop" in L.A. and was pleased to note taht you sound as good live as you do on the soundtracks of your various productions. (i am a recent rent-head, i actually got into it by first hearing you on the "charlie brown" soundtrack, so when we were last in NY i thought 'oh, let's go see rent. anthony rapp was in the original cast of that.') you inspire me as a performer the way young aspiring doctors are inspired by... older doctors that have made it in the world. (i know, horrible metaphor...)

and from what i know as a person you seem like an excellant and admirable one.

this has gone on FOREVER and probably no one has read it but yeah... i don't know why i wrote this and i understand even less why i actually posted it. but here it is.

But we all love you too!! I'm so excited for this movie!! You did such a great job on the cast recording, i'm such a big fan of Broadway... I cant wait! I'm 15 and I've wanted to be on B-way since I was 5, so I'm working really hard for it! You never cease to amaze me with your talent and graciousness. Your love for and dedication to the spirit of Rent is totally contagious and has prompted my roommate and I to start our own Peasant Feast tradition here in Chicago. I couldn't be more excited about the movie and your book. November 11th can't get here soon enough!

Any special events in the works for us Chicago Rentheads?

How does it feel to know that through the creative projects you've chosen and just by being true to yourself you have had a huge positive impact on people all over the world?

Thank you so much for being you and continuing to be a positive role model for us all!!!

KatyGrace

P.S.- Come back to us at BWW.com We miss you!

I think it's so amazing and wonderful that you guys take the time to answer our questions. Rent means so much to me, and it's so nice to learn that the people I idolize and connect to (you and the obc) are so real and kind. I couldn't be more thrilled about this movie, especially upon word that they were using the original cast. I just have a quick question: Do you lose momentum when you have to film a scene over and over? Does any of the energy or emotions get lost after filming a scene numerous amounts of times? Thanks so much for everything you do--you're work and effort is so inspiring. Can't wait for the movie to come out!

Anthony! I am just sooo in love with you because I cannot believe how you just dedicate so much t oread our posts, questions and comments..I of course, also love you because you have forever put Mark in my hart to remind me the ways I should be living my life.
I am so sad though because I am a devoted renthead who lives in Argentina. Although I am very happy here I am sad that this means I will not be able to se the movie on the big screen until the 6th of Feburary!!!
I want to thank you for always writing blogs and stuff here because it means so much to me that I can be as near as possible from rent and its spirit. I will obviously be getting your book in the first opportunity I have. I love your writing almost as much as I love your performing!!
Please keep writing!..cant wait to see the movie!!
Best wishes!! take care!

PS: Sorry for my English!

Hi! I just have to say that I agree entirely about your writing. The first time I heard that Rent was becoming a movie I feared the worst but after I read your first blog...I have no doubts it will be amazing. (And your book which I WILL get =^.^=).

I can't wait to hear you on the soundtrack! Especially Finale B, at the begining, I adore your voice, despite how cliche it sounds you really are amazing.

Pssssssssst. Can we hope to see a video blog of you?
Thanks for listening! er...reading!

I really am looking forward to RENT coming out in theaters, my mother and I saw March of the Penguins yesterday (7/26/05) and the trailer for RENT was at the beginning, and let me just say that I do not normally talk about trailers this way, but the trailer for RENT was really really good.

This comment is for Mr. Rapp. I read what you posted about the Wicked fans following Ms. Menzel's blog entries.

I have to admit that I too saw her and Kristin Chenoweth in Wicked. However, I decided to post this because I have been following your career since I saw you off-Broadway as Charlie Brown in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

I just wanted to congradulate you, Mr. Rapp, on the completion of the film, which since it is coming out in November, is most likely completed (I mean also because the trailer is out already), and to point out that it isn't only Ms. Menzel who's fans are keeping an eye on things.

Sincerely yours,

Anthony, I'm glad that you will be immortalizing "Rent" on film. I'm looking forward to seeing it!!

I wanted you to know that I caught up with Elizabeth Shue at SUNDANCE this past January and we were talking about some of the movies she had made and ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING came up in the conversation. I told her how much I still enjoyed watching that movie and she remarked that "It still holds up really well," and I agreed. She mentioned that it was an extremely fun set to be on and that it was a fun cast to work with.

Just thought you might like to know.

It seems like you really love to be in touch with your fan base which is a really great thing. I was wondering if the studio is permitting you to tell the RENTworld which songs made it into the film and which songs have been edited or taken out from the original stage production?

Hi there! Ever since my brother got me hooked on RENT way back when I had always wanted to see it live! However, I doubt I ever will, but when i heard that they were making a movie I was so excited! I'm so happy about it and can't wait to go see it a hundred times! This may sound kind of lame, but you and Adam Pascal were always my favorite characters! I'm just so excited that it will almost be the whole entire original broadway cast! YAY! I just can't wait to see all of you sing!

Mr. Rapp,

Words cannot describe what an honor it is to be able to communicate with you. I just wanted to say thank you for doing such a wonderful job, Rent has changed my life in so many ways. I would give anything and everything just to have been able to see an original show or even meet the cast. Continue with the work and photography. Good Luck and Best Wishes

I find it so great that your writing a book and some of your photography will be in it! I promise you I will be one of the first people to buy one!

Looking forward to the movie,
Chloe

Mr. Rapp,
To think that you may be reading this right now amazes me. I am only 15 but a month ago I saw RENT and I havent been the same since. It inspired me in so many ways and opened my eyes. I never got to see the original cast actually preform rent considering i would have been a tad young to understand well, anything in it. But I do own the soundtrack and know all the words. Like most all people that see the show im guessing. As corny as it probably sounds rent helped shape the kind of person im going to be some day. im sure every person who sees it is touched in some way but i really felt it (i also cried 4 times). Well, Mark is my favorite character of all time and his songs are my favorites in the show. What you Own is probably my favorite. Your voice is so beautiful on the track and it would be incredible to hear you live though that will probably never happen. the movie is going to be amazing and i am counting down the days until it starts.

just some more admiration from another adoring fan.

I will not call you Mr. Rapp because you're not my algebra teacher. :o)

Anyway...I just got done watching the video for Seasons of Love from AOL. I noticed that there is A LOT of you in it. Is this in any way an attempt by the studio to depict Mark as the main character? (As it should be!)

Posted by: Amanda on 08/02/05 at 09:08 PM

Anthony,

Have you had the chance to see other actors portray Mark on Broadway and if so, do you have any favorites? Is it a weird experience seeing someone else play the character you have helped create?

Posted by: amanda on 08/03/05 at 12:56 PM

You were great on the Today show! I'm one of the many people who feel connected to Mark and I think you're wonderful! I am so excited about the movie, and I'll be seeing it the day it opens in Chicago. Thanks for all the great posts, too. It's great how you interact with your fans. Everything on this blog had been amazing. Thank you and good luck!

I've been a renthead for two years, and I've never seen a show. I just heard "What You Own" in a talent show, and loved the lyrics. I wanted to find out more, so I researched on-line found samples of the cd and listened. I fell in love with the songs and everyone's voice was just so unique and filled with emotion. It was crazy how just listening to these characters made them come alive. Mark soon became my favorite character from simply listening to the songs. I'm so glad almost all the same voices I've listned too so much over the years will be in the movie, and I'm excited to hear the two new voices. :)

I'm also extremly excited about the movie, it'll definetly reach more people than ever now! And give those who didn't have the chance or money to see Rent before, the opportunity to see an amazing show, and listen to those great voices and awesome lyrics.

Thanks for your continued posting and for answering questions. I really enjoy reading what you have to say, and I'll have to check out your book when it comes out.
