Shooting Is Complete by Chris Columbus (Director)

Shooting is complete. I can breathe again. So...

I have time to actually make my first official written entry into the Rent Blog. It's been a long and an amazing road making this film. I've had some of the best experiences of my cinematic career. Every day coming to work has been a real joy, because I'm working with eight cast members who are incredibly enthusiastic and committed to their performances. I can honestly say that in over 20 years of making films, I have never seen a situation like this, where actors who aren't shooting on a particular day, show up on the set, staying for three or four hours, to support their fellow performers. I'll be shooting a scene with Idina and Tracie, and Adam and Anthony may come by the set, even though they are not working. That is real devotion to a project. All of this somehow translates to film. Each frame is filled with emotion and dedication.

As an obsessive Rent fan, part of the thrill in completing this film, is knowing that in a few months, I'll be able to walk into a movie theater, and watch this film again and again. When I first saw the play, I wanted to come back the very next night Hell, I would have stayed and watched it again, if there was another performance. Somehow, the knowledge that Rent is playing all over the country, at our local cinemas, is very exciting. Now it will be possible to re-live the experience whenever we'd like.

Several days ago, we finished shooting the "Rent" number, which is ironically, one of the last things we shot in the film. It is such a rousing, intense opening for this film. The dailies are very intense and visually exciting. It will be a strong opening for the picture.

Having finished shooting "You'll See" with Taye Diggs, I was struck by his strong musical talent and charm. Also, Taye has an amazing sense of humor, one of the funniest people I've ever spent time with. I don't think a lot of people know that about him. It would be great to some day see him in a comedic role.

The other cast members, as I've said many times, have made my life as a Director very easy. Anthony Rapp lives and breathes the whole spirit of Rent. For me, Anthony is the heart and soul of this group. His focus and intensity are amazing.

Adam Pascal is the only person who ever could have played Roger. He brings an honest rock and roll sensibility to the role. His voice is powerful and awesome. He's a terrific actor.

Idina Menzel is incredibly funny, incredibly charismatic, and has one of the strongest voices I've ever heard in my life. She sparkles onscreen. She's totally unique, and very real.

Wilson Heredia...well...no one looks better in a dress, male or female. And he is absolutely heartbreaking in his performance as Angel. Every nuance and moment of reality that Wilson brought to the stage, he brings to this performance.

Jesse L. Martin. Every time Jesse sings, I'm overcome with emotion. His vocals are rich and filled with intensity. Yet there are two sides to his personality. When he sings "Santa Fe," you get caught up in the charm of his performance. But in the "I'll Cover You" reprise, Jesse can actually make you feel the depths of his pain.

Tracie Thoms, one of our new cast members, is truly one of the brightest new, young performers I've seen in a long time. I think Tracie truly has it all. A gifted comedic actress, she's also an extremely realistic and sensitive dramatic actress with a voice that will make Aretha Franklin jealous.

Rosario Dawson, obviously one of our new cast members, has done a phenomenal job in her portrayal of Mimi. Her vocals on "Out Tonight" are stunning. And she has brought the character of Mimi to life. Her performance is astounding.

As you can tell, I am pretty effusive in my praise of these cast members. But they are all future cinematic superstars. On a personal level, they are also a wonderful group of people. It has been an honor to work with them.

Jesse came up to me at the wrap party in Santa Fe, and said I should form a repertory company with all eight actors. The possibility would be exciting. We could shoot different types of movies together. What do you think? A "Pulp Fiction" or "Star Wars" kinda thing with the Rent cast?

Anyway, now that shooting is complete, I'll log in from time to time and let you know how the editing is going. Thanks for your interest. See you soon. Chris.

Thank you for posting this. I am so happy that everything turned out great. Really it's great that you got most of the OBC for us Rentheads. I can't wait for the movie and thanks again.

Thank you for making this movie! I think it is wonderful that the story of Rent can now be seen by a much larger audience than the show could ever do and with what sounds like the best cast ever!

Posted by: Heather on 06/27/05 at 10:30 AM

I just want to thank you for taking on the project and making this happen. So often you hear of musicals in the planning stages of being filmed and it never comes to fruition. Everything about Rent is magical to me. I cannot sit though a hearing of the music without crying my heart out. I may have to see this alone the first time or my partner will think I have lost my mind. Thank you all for making sure that this Rent lives forever.

Posted by: Mark Flora on 06/27/05 at 10:31 AM

Awesome. :o) I'm glad everything turned out great and I know everyone keeps saying this, but I can't wait to see the movie! My cousin and I are going the first night it opens, figuring it'll be a lot of Rentheads so we wont get yelled at when we moo with Maureen.

Mucho love for you all!

Glad to hear that the rent filming is complete. Any thoughts on including som of the behind the scenes footage included on this site when it's released on DVD? Likewise, as a rent fan, what compelled you to make changes in the looks and plot lines of some aspects of rent? (i.e. Filming the riot instead of implying it, Roger's "Long Hair" look, etc?

Posted by: Jose on 06/27/05 at 10:39 AM

Wow... it's over. I'm glad that you finally got to post, I've been waiting to really hear from you. I love that we're all on the same level here, with absolute love and passion for RENT. I have never been more excited in anticipation of a movie before, and I thank you for that!

In regards to Jesse's suggestion for a Rep company of those eight... I would be absolutely thrilled. That could truly bring back the movie-musical era, which would ABSOLUTELY ROCK! I hope that this little idea comes to fruition, I would support you all the way.

Like the stage show did for Broadway, I truly have faith that this movie will put a huge spin in the film world. Jonathan Larson was such a visionary, and he created a masterpiece in RENT that has a timeless message to be embraced by generations. Mr. Columbus, your part in spreading the message will enable Jonathan's vision to be complete, accessible to everyone. Thank you.

I've babbled long enough. Please keep us posted as much as possible. We await what I'm sure is your masterpiece.

Thanks again!

YAY commenting is back...this was down for a bit.

Thanks for the tearjearking display of Love for this cast. We LOVE them too

Very glad that filming is over. Hope editing goes well. Don't cut the good songs!!!

I hope you all work together soon. It seems like its been a once in a life time experience, but the sparks and love and emotion are still there...cant wait to see you all at the premiere. (Yes I'm going...best be in NY)

Thanks for the update

Posted by: Di on 06/27/05 at 10:40 AM

WOW. I must say that you are a very dedicated and wonderful director, and I'm thrilled that you are directing this movie! Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this. I'm definately seeing this baby twice on opening day. :D

Posted by: Mia on 06/27/05 at 10:41 AM

Ah! I'm so happy for all of you! It sounds like it was so very awesome... and I think we're gonna feel that straight through the screen. I think its wonderful to have a director that has such great faith in the actors and actors who share such a strong, wonderful bond. I never saw the show (cause I'm only fourteen and for some reason my parents thought a show about drugs, AIDS, and living your life in love is innapropriate. What's up with that?) but I've listened to the soundtrack over and over and hopefully the movie will allow me to live my dream and see the show.

Oh, and I personally would watch anything with the entire Rent cast in it, no matter how silly. I think a Star Wars parody would be hilarious!

Peace, love, and RENT!

Mr. Columbus, thank you so so very much for bringing this wonderful musical to life on the big screen. Your enthusiastic and excited words about the film makes us all die-hard fans like yourself absolutely not being able to wait until November. The movie is going to be amazing. And I'm glad that the cast members fully support each other and have become a family just like the original cast members did in 1996. I'd anxious to hear more posts from you in the future. Much love!!

I'm so happy you had a great time filming. When you were talking about Wilson 'No one looks better in a dress' that made me crack up. I knew you would make this moive great for the RENT fans when I heard you were a fan. I absolutely can't wait for the film! I'm really glad you directed this. Good luck in the future!

Thank you times a million for posting. It's really a treat to hear about the director's feelings. I'm thrilled that you had such a good time filming everything; I don't think this movie could be filmed without everyone having a blast. You do amazing work, and when I saw the trailer my jaw dropped and stayed open from the beginning notes all the way to the end. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again. And thank you so much, again, for giving us the update!

Posted by: Alyssa on 06/27/05 at 11:04 AM

I can't even describe how i feel when i see the Rent trailer, and how wonderful it is that most of the OBC is starring in the film. There is going to be such terrible anticipation until November!!! but in a good way!! I have to see it opening day with all the other Rent-heads!!

Posted by: Liza on 06/27/05 at 11:38 AM

I have never been fortunate enough to see Rent, but I am head over heels in love with the OBC recording and, of course, with the story. Thank you for making this film and having a fun time with it. I love the trailer, and the most recent clip from the set made me crack up, it was really easy to see that the cast gets along well. Anyway, thank you for making this film- I'll finally have a chance to see my favorite musical!

Posted by: Natalie on 06/27/05 at 11:44 AM

Thanks for the post Mr. Columbus! And thank you for making RENT a movie! I'm so glad a fan, who truly understands what RENT is about, is in charge. I can't believe filming's finished! Now RENT is officially documented forever for us all to see and love and learn from.wow. I have complete faith in you and the rest of the cast-I cannot wait til November!
Those notes about the castmembers are so sweet! I'm so glad you all had such a good time working together. And I know what you mean about Anthony being the soul of the group. He updated us constantly on BWW (Broadway world)and everytime he wrote he was so genuine and devoted to Jonathon and his vision. He is a remarkable human being.
The entire cast is so gifted and true that this film MUST be a success, there's no way it couldn't be. I've seen the trailer, and I've read the blogs and I'm continually blown away by how amazing all this is! Thank you for letting the fans have this connection with the creation of the movie-it means so much.
And to your question about forming a repertory company! WOW PLEASE DO! That would be so incredible.
Also, I know there are a ton of posts for you to read, so if you actually read this thank you thank you thank you. And I have a wish that maybe you could fulfill. Is there anyway we can have a midnight showing? for all the RENTheads? That would be astounding..I don't know how you go about doing that but if it's possible I know many would appreciate it. Also, please put as many extra features as possible on the dvd, I'd love to be even closer than we are now to the film. I know that's a lot to ask, and really I'm just thankful for this blog and for such a great director for our film..Well, I've blabbed enough, so THANKS AGAIN!
love

Is there any talk of a complete recording of the show that includes everything? I can't wait to see the film! I saw the preview on the big screen for the first time yesterday and was bouncing up and down in my seat. I was also happy to hear others applaud and one guy say, "Yeah!" I'm definitely planning on spending Veteran's Day at the theatre all day. I'm glad it's being released on a government holiday. It works perfectly for me!

Thank you for taking the care to make sure that almost all of the original cast was included and that the film would stay true to the original vision by Jonathan Larson! We appreciate it!

Thank you so much for letting us all know whats happening with the movie, and telling us more about the cast. I'm sure everyone else here feels closer to rent than ever before, its so close I feel like I can grab it.

Posted by: Claire on 06/27/05 at 12:13 PM

I am SOOO excited for the "Rent" movie! I haven't even seen the musical yet, but I've loved the soundtrack for years and years. Hearing that the movie would be released this fall was just a blessing to me. Love to you all! I'm sure you made a masterpiece.

Posted by: Steven on 06/27/05 at 12:29 PM

This is amazing.

Thank you so much for your dedication to 'keeping this film real' and sticking with Larson's vision. I have complete faith in this production, and your kind words to the cast were really sweet. Interesting little suggestion at the end, though--an acting troupe? Now, THAT would be really neat....

Chris,
I can't thank you enough for working on this movie. I just know that it is going to be completely amazing. At first I was really skeptical about how this show would make the transition to the big screen, but after reading everyone's thoughts and comments about how things played out, I'm just sooooo excited to see it and I know people will continue to see it over and over again.I also want to say how lucky you are to get to work with that cast. Those people have been my idols forever- they are some of the most talented people out there. Oh and about this whole repertory idea.... I completely support it 100% ... and if you should ever need any new talent for any upcoming projects through this repertory company .... I'm sure certain so called Rentheads would be more than willing to help out....well, just a thought:) Good luck with the rest of the movie!
And keep in touch to let us know how its going. Us Rentheads are impatient people!!! Rock on Rentheads!!!

Hey.

As a fellow Renthead, I am OBSESSED with the show, can't want to see the live preformances, and CAN'T WAIT to see the awesome on screen version. We know that all of the cast, stage managers, writers, and producers are all doing a great job.

Can't wait to see it!

Thank you so very much for posting such a wonderful entry - and of course, for making this dream project of a film version of "Rent". I am so glad you had such a phenomenal time with the cast and how they astounded you. As we watch the trailer countless times, we all are so very proud of you and the company. Bravo.

And I like you and Jesse's idea at your party in Santa Fe - now, who would work better: Maureen or Mimi as Princess Leia? HA!

Thank you again for these updates - be sure to let the cast know as well.

i would like to take the time to thank you for turning my favorite musical into a movie. Knowing that the original cast members were in it prooved to me that this is going to be great. I cannot wait until NOVEMBER 11th to see this in the movies! Opening night will be the best, because all of the rent heads will be there and we can probably all sing together. ha. i cannot wait!!!

thank you!

As soon as I heard Rent was going to be a movie WITH Idina in it i was flipping out. I love this musical and I absolutely love Idina..shes increadible! If i would ever meet her that would be amazing

Thanks!

Thank you so much for your beautiful words of praise about the cast! I was only 12 when the original cast was on Broadway, so I didn't get to see them. But I'm absolutely in love with the soundtrack and have seen the musical numerous times, and to know that you're a diehard 'RENT' fan is extremely comforting! The huge amount of confidence, that I had in this film previously, grew exponentially while reading your entry.

Also, I just wanted to tell you that my sister and I were at the movies this past weekend and saw the trailer on the big screen for the first time, and we were thrilled! Singing along and clapping, the people next to us probably thought we were insane. But knowing the amount of excitement we felt just to see the trailer, you can imagine how exhilarating it will be for us on 11/11/05!

Thank you for what will most definitely be a wonderful piece of art!

-Jenn

PS Please let us know where you all will be attending the premier. :)

Posted by: Jenn on 06/27/05 at 02:38 PM

Congratulations on finishing the film! I am so excited...I really don't know what I will do until November. I hope that everything goes well with the editing.
God bless,

All I can say is, "YAY!"

Posted by: Rachel on 06/27/05 at 03:37 PM

Yes! Yes! Yes!! A repertory company is just what you need!!! :) Thank you so much for being so faithful to Jonathan and all us Rentheads, I obviously won't see the film until November 11, but I can tell by everyone (especially Anthony's) enthusiam that you have done a most brilliant job. Thank you, thank you thank you. I was eleven when the OBC was on Broadway. I was also in Nova Scotia, Canada. So, although I have been a "rent head" for almost nine years I never got to see the Original Cast, so this film which I know I will see over and over again, will be most precious to me.
Thank you, thank you!

Mr.Columbus,
I can not tell you how much this project means to all of us rent-heads to begin with. What means more to me though is your dedication and passion for the cast and the movie. It is truly wonderful to hear that you are a rent lover and you really took the words right out of my mouth when you said you could walk into a movie theater and see RENT over and over again. I just can't wait. I have seen the show 14 times and I know I am going to see the movie probably double that. You really have done an amazing thing. I just want to say thank you again, and I hope editing and the post shoot goes well. I look foward to hearing from you again. Is the premiere going to be in NYC or in Hollywood? Well best of luck and thanks a million. You have made alot of wishes come true!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate RENT being turned into a movie. I'm definitely one of those people who like Theatre to be exactly that Theatre, but I've never had a chance to see RENT on stage and it pains me. I'm in love with the music and constantly surf the web for pics. And other info and when I came across the movie page for RENT I screamed and ran around the house. I can't wait to see the music come to life and maybe one day I'll be able to see RENT on stage. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed.

Posted by: Hilary on 06/27/05 at 05:43 PM

Hey Chris,

I just wanted to know if RENT was going to be released worldwide on the 11th November...I hope so otherwise me and my friends might just have to board a plane(from Australia) to come and see it in the states. I just wanted to let you know that there are countless Aussies waiting in anticipation also. We were lucky enough to have RENT play here in Sydney and Melbourne and so consequently there are many fans of the show from down under.. just wanted to let you know the reach of Jonathans message and thankyou for bringing this little masterpiece a little closer to us.... THANKS AGAIN CHRIS YOU ROCK!!

ps I cant wait to see you at the oscars -) not to jinx it but by the look of this film I think this movie is without a doubt a serious contender!!!!

Posted by: Natt on 06/27/05 at 05:55 PM

Thanks for the post. I've been worried about the movie b/c I am an obsessive RENT fan myself, and have been for years. I've seen the play 13 times over the past years. On Broadway and a couple of traveling casts also. I'm still a little worried, but have become excited about the movie now. Thanks again for the post!

OMG I am such a RENTHEAD its ridiculous! I am so excited to see this movie! I mean my favorite actress is in it...Idina you rock...you just do....its amazing. I turned 17 a couple of weeks before the movie comes out so I can see it without being bounced YAY! My friends and me are spending the night at the theatre before the opening! (at least we are going to try, most likley we will come to the theatre 5 hours before the first showing instead lol. Mr. Columbus you ROCK! I hope everyone had a FANTASTIC time filming it because I had a FANTASTIC time reading about it! Good luck in the future to everyone. Peace out *sad attempt at a gangster sign* lol

Posted by: Katie L on 06/27/05 at 06:34 PM

Chris, as a college kid trying to get into film, I can only imagine how much pressure you were feeling to get RENT right. I've got faith in you though- with this kind of cast in there and your brains? God bless you for going for it. I'm really happy that my friends all over the world can finally see the story that has impacted my life and the life of my friends so deeply. An example: my friend Joey lives in California and hadn't been able to see anything involving RENT. But during a bad point in his life, he listened to the soundtrack, he was given a lift in spirits. That's the spirit of RENT, and that's what you and the cast are doing. Inspiring. Keep up the good work.

chris, (i feel totally wierd and kinda unrespectful for just calling you chris... but with RENT, there is a sense of family which starts with jonathan larson) you have totally given the show, it's actors, and jonathan a chance to live forever. thank you for your vision and your gift to make this happen for me and soon to be millions of RENTHEADS all over the world. from what was posted by the other cast members and julie larson, i know that the film is in good hands -- with an angel looking over your shoulder ;o) THANK YOU! ~friends call me, conrad. just conrad~

Like everyone here has already said, thank you so much for bringing the enthusiasm and passion that this show deserves to the movie version. I'm sure that it will be wonderful!

I can't wait for my friends who aren't from New York and have never had the opportunity to see Rent on Broadway to finally see it! I'm sure that the movie will touch a lot of people.

Good luck with editing!

THANK YOU CHRIS!!! For posting, and for being the director of RENT, and for being so dedicated and completely wonderful about everything RENT. I'm sooo excited for the movie that sometimes I can barely contain it. I'll walk around with a kind of glow inside and I'll be like "what is making me so happy/jumpy-excited??" and then realize it's RENT...=)

I loved all the praise for the actors, because they completely and utterly deserve it. I can't tell you how much respect and admiration I have for each one of them and for you. I think, when the movie comes out, that we're all of us going to be blown away...I know it.

Anways thanks again!! *warm fuzzy feeling*

I think it's so great how the cast member's support each other even when they aren't needed. It just shows what a big impact RENT has on the cast and how involved they want to get whenever they can get the chance.

Thanks a million for making one of my favorite musicals of all time into a movie. I can't wait to see it!!!

Thank you Chris Columbus for making this movie happen!!! By only reading your lines I can feel your enthusiasm and passion for this great project, and I can't wait to see the movie!! I've seen a few of your movies and I think they're awesome, so I'm pretty sure "Rent" is going to be out of this world!!!

I cannot thank you enough Mr columbus. I am going to see this movie oopening day, and after the first time, I will walk right back in and buy another ticket, because I know it is going to be AMAZING:

I have been on IMDB for the past 2 years looking at rumors of spike lee as director and Baz Luhrman, the rumor it was dumped. My dreams of seeing this on the bigscreen were trashed completely. Then as I dug deeper a year or so later I was overcome with joy to hear that the movie was beign made witha steady director, NO JOKE.

Oi! I hope you read this and maybe you can answer a question of mine. I dont want to think this is true, but you are the one in charge maybe you can help. On the Kristin Chenoweth blog board, there are rumors flying that RENT wont get released onto DVD and video. PLEASE PLEASE tell me this isnt true. I hope to hear from you... or someone that can reassure a true rent head.

Thank u for this film and all the time you put into it.

Thanks Chris for posting...it's nice to hear a different perspective! I have great faith that you will remain true to Larson's original vision and can't wait for the release!

Ok, I know you are busy, but if you get a second, please check out some of the message boards around the web that include some great ideas that fellow RENTHEADS (and maybe future directors!) have come up with for the DVD release, and what your fellow rentheads are thinking regarding bonus features.

Oh my god, i'm so excited. but i have to wait half a year, because i'm from germany and the film will start later. But it's finished. Isn't it amazing?

Hello Mr. Columbus,
I want to thank you for stepping up to the plate and bringing RENT to the world, forever. I must admit as a true RENT fan when I found out they were making the movie I was VERY worried. Worried that whoever they chose to direct the film would see it as an opportunity to make his cinematic mark to the world. That Jonathan's vision would be secondary because artistic freedom could be in abundance. Then I found out you had taken the job and all of those fears subsided and for that I must say THANKS. I have every confidence that the film will be pivotal to all of our lives. I’m sure that it will round out RENT’s journey filling gaps the play can’t address in two and half hours. I can’t wait to finally be able to share with everyone I know the magic of RENT. I have heard for so long from my inner circle what was it about the show that had me so changed. I have tried and tried to explain with every conviction what it did to change my life. Now thanks to Sony pictures and you we all will get the chance of a life time. To experience RENT as it should be with so many of the original cast in the film this is totally awesome.

Thanks,
Vannie

hello mr. columbus!
I just want to say THANK YOU for bringing RENT to the big screen. I can't wait! Please continue to keep us updated! Also, is the premiere going to be in NYC or Hollywood?
Thanks again,
Carolyn

Thank you, Chris Columbus for bringing so many of my loves to life. From the first two Harry Potter books to my favorite musical, I must thank you. I feel you are working hard to keep Jonathan's vision true into the transition to film. I think I speak for all of us RENTheads when I say we appreciate all of the updates. A different director (*Cough* Spike Lee) might not have worked as hard to keep us updated and interested in the filming process. From Anthony's vids to Idina and Taye's cute posts, I feel like I have an actual chance to express my opinions and concerns. I also surf the RENT board on imdb.com and live on compulsivebowlers.org, but I come here first for updates and to hear info directly from my favorite eight performers. So, once again, thanks.

I can't wait until you bring RENT to the entire country Mr. Columbus! Finally, people won't have to pay $90 to experience the heartbreaking story of young Bohemians living in New York City. The insights you provided on the cast member's personalities were enjoyable to read!

Hello All,

It is great to hear the director be excited about a project, and be fully committed to "RENT".

I have to say that I think this film is going to be a big success, partly due to because it is "RENT", and because Idina is in it and has really brought a lot of attention back to Broadway, acting, and most of all to showcase real talent. She is just amazing (I know that word is used a lot to describe her, but really there are little words that give her justice).

And to the rest of the cast, you all rock! I love each of you for bring "Rent" to the big screen in the hopes that so people who have listened to the music, but may not have been able to see it live - it is just going to rock.

When I first saw Rent several years ago, I sat in the first row, not ever foreshadowing the emotional experience I would have. Never before has a show impacted me so wonderfully. The emotions I experience during that time I will never forget, and the impact the show had on me understanding that life is meant to be spent with the people you love was immeasurable. Of course as many Rent groupies can attest to, I know all the words to all of the songs, and just keep this show in a special place in my heart.

I can't tell you how happy I am that this will be a movie and I can one day own this masterpiece and watch it whenever I want.

Thank you for taking the time to make this film and thank you for including so many of the original cast, they are truly remarkable performers.

I look forward to seeing this movie on opening night!!

Anyway, I am so excited for this movie. I loved the praise given to each of the cast members. So very sweet.

And Jesse's got a good idea there. Go make more movies with this amazing cast. Make yourself, them, and us Rentheads very happy.

(But make better movies... Be Cool? Bleh!)

I'm so thankful you handled Rent the right way and - judging by the Teaser- kept it real and the way it's supposed to be! There were so many thing somebody who doesn't have the right relationship to the play could have done wrong, but I'm sure THIS will be a brilliant movie!
Thank you!

RENT changed my life forever and now to be able to watch it one day whenever i feel those feelings go away is such a gift you are giving us. Thank you from the bottom of my, and many others hearts.

AHHH It is finally finished I can't believe it...well in a way I can. It sounds like it is going to be amazing; I know that it is going to be amazing.

Mr. Columbus, everything you said about the casts personalities sounds like it is be true, I. myself have never met them so I can't verify that but I do believe it. However I can verify that Taye Diggs, has a STRONG musical talent (not to mention everything else), Anthony Rapp is the HEART and soul of this group, Adam Pascal is the ONLY person who ever could have played Roger (although everyone else that has played Roger did a good job), Indina has one of the STRONGEST vocals and I think we all know that she SPARKELS on stage (not just because she is beautiful), no one looks BETTER in a dress, male or female than Wilson Heredia (I couldn’t pull off those heals!), Jesse L Martins vocals ARE rich and FILLED with intensity, Tracie Thoms (beautiful, so glad she joined the cast), is truly one of the BRIGHTEST new, young performers that anyone has seen in a long time, and last but defiantly not least Rosario Dawson, always does phenomenal job (not to mention she’s gorgeous)

I can't wait to see the movie. This couldn't have been done without you, Mr. Columbus I hope you know that! Thank you for giving all of us the opportunity to see Rent on the big screen!

I Can't Wait!!!

Love Always

I was studying in Paris during the summer of 1998 when I made my way to London one week and saw Rent on stage. Talk about love at first song. Just days ago I went to the movies and completely embarassed a friend by standing up in the theatre to sing along with the preview (you can't really blame me, it was the first time I'd seen it). Needless to say, I cannot wait to see Rent on the big screen this fall. Kudos on what I know will be an absolutely amazing movie (any way I can get cast signatures once the dvd comes out?). Thanks in advance, you're making my semester.

P.S. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Jesse, if you don't come out of that coma dancing an Irish jig, I'll never watch Law and Order again.

You dedication to this play is one of the best things about you shooting this movie. I've been a huge RENT fan ever since my father took me to see it as a teenage girl. I was leery when I was told that they were making the movie, but I will admit to being relieved that 6 out of the original 8 actors are making the movie. I'm sure you've done a fantastic job. The trailer, which I taped off of TV and have watched at least 300 times, amazes me and makes me more excited to see the movie. I can't wait to hear Jesse sing "I'll Cover You Reprise" again and to see Angel, my favorite character from the play, on the big screen.
Thank you for making this movie.

Hi there!
I just wanted to thank you for taking such good care of this project. Like you, and like so many other people, the Rent movie was appealing mostly because so many of us would like to see the show over and over and over again. The story is beautiful and important, the cast is fantastic, and the music can make you both laugh and cry.

Anyway, I think Rent is something that touches so many people because if nothing else you relate to the friendship and love between this group both onstage and apparently off. This show is something I spent my teenage years watching and loving (having seen if for the first time a week after graduating from high school). I watch the trailer and I am thrilled to think that finally I can share this show with friends and family who couldn't afford to or just weren't able to go see it.

Thanks also for sharing your thoughts on the cast. I've seen quite a few of them in other projects and am truly glad that so many of them were able to return for this film. They have shown such a commitment to this show and to its fans. We definitely appreciate their hard work!

Well please keep us updated on how things are going for you and the film! As someone who will soon begin working in post production down in So Cal (and who has always had a great deal of fun editing) I'd love to know how these final phases are going. And hey if you ever need a post PA... :)

Thanks again!

Rent is one of my all-time favorite musicals and I can't wait to see it! I'm glad you and everyone else enjoyed working with it. Best of luck with movie critics and ratings and all you do in the future.

P.S. The Rent cast doing a spoof on Star Wars? I had a sudden vision of Idina with that Princess Leia hairstyle! : )

I was the same way when I first saw Rent. I saw the preview for the movie first on Coming Attractions and I started sobbing. I am soo happy it's being made into a movie and I am so glad you are directing it because you stay so true to the originals when you do adaptations. I am in love with the whole thing, funny considering I did not want to go see it the first time I did and by the end of "You Okay, Honey?" I was in LOVE! I am so excited and I wish I could meet you just to hug you and bow down to the greatest idea in cinema, EVER! I am so excited to the point where like Oprah and Ellen Degeneres have like Wildest Dream episodes and I used going to the premier and being able to meet everyone with my best friend (and fellow Rent-head) Laura (who's in LOVE with Anthony Rapp, I prefer Adam Pascal myself lol) because it wouldn't be nearly as awesome if I couldn't share it with her. I'm so excited, I can't wait. I can't wait until I can buy the movie poster and I can't wait until I can see stills from the movie and I absolutely cannot wait to see the movie. I taped the preview on a tape, known as my Rent tape (I tape anything on TV about Rent on that tape) and I watch it at least three times a day. I'm so excited and I jsut want to thank you all for doing this project, I truly cannot wait!

Posted by: Briana on 06/29/05 at 08:41 AM

Chris,
I cannot wait for this movie!!! It opens just 17 days before my birthday, so I'd like to think that this movie is a personal birthday present. (I know, I know- but thank-you for it anyway)!! I'm also wondering when and where the premiere will be because, you know, you could have an awesome contest for a few Rentheads to win tickets to the premiere and meet you and the cast!! I know I would die if I got the chance to do that!!! Just a suggestion!!!! Keep up the good work!!!.

No day but today!!!

Hi Mr. Columbus! I had the opportunity to see RENT on the broadway stage twice last year. Jai Rodriguez and Melanie Brown were starring when I saw it 2 nights in a row! I always wanted to see what it would be like with the original cast in their respective roles. Thank you so much for doing this! Back to what someone else had said about editing and how you shouldn't cut any good songs... heck, don't cut ANY! Best of luck! We've got an award winner on our hands!

Posted by: Cassie on 06/29/05 at 08:52 AM

Hi! I think it's great that there was such a chemistry between the cast and the staff on the set. I've never seen rent on stage but I own the original cast record and I can't wait to see the movie! About the Star Wars thing, go for it, I would totally go and see it!!! haha! Thanks for writing! No day but Nov. 11!

Posted by: WickdWitch on 06/29/05 at 09:28 AM

Mr. Columbus: Glad to hear that shooting has gone so well! I saw the trailer last night in a theatre and I almost shed a tear! I've seen Rent on Broadway twice (but unfortunately not with the OBC) and I am so excited for this movie!! Best of luck to you in post production, and I can't wait for November to see your final product!

Posted by: Ashley on 06/29/05 at 10:50 AM

From what I saw from the trailer, you guys have done amazing work. I cannot wait for the movie to come out in November. It's going to be amazing and the vocals were beautiful. I know next to nothing about the play when I saw the trailer, but the minute I heard the song 525,600 I knew that I would be in the theatres come November and that I had to find out more. ^^ Thanks for getting me hooked.

I wish I could shake your hand right now! I am so thankful this is being made into a movie, I love all of the cast members...probably to an obessive point LOL! But today when I saw Bewitched with my friend the Rent trailer was shown in the previews and I absolutely started FLIPPING out! I was singing along and clapping and SHAKING! Thank you soo much!

Posted by: Shannon on 06/29/05 at 07:12 PM

seriously, THANK YOU for being so committed to this film, vision, and message. I saw the trailer last week and it gave me chills; I've seen the show on Broadway and the film looks like it brings the story to life so much more.

And yes, direct more movies with these actors!

Ryan

Posted by: Ryan on 06/29/05 at 09:41 PM

Thank you so much for taking on this project.
I believe you as a director have a gift for adapted screenplays, and keeping true to the original work. Between the trailer, all the cast memeber's words, and all I have read, it is more than evident that you have done this with RENT. I was faithful that you would even when I first heard you would be directing, because as an avid Harry Potter fan as well, I felt you (and only you thus far) had captured the STORY of Harry Potter into the movies and really stayed true to the books. Fancy visuals weren't a good replacemet for the story in my opinion later on..... It looks like RENT is to be a whole new level of trueness to the original work, and I have been an avid RENT fan from almost the beginning , seen the production many many times over, and I can just tell this is going to be an amazing adaptation, perhaps the best musical- to screen musical I've ever seen.

Thanks for all the hard work and taking on this phenomenal work of art :)

Posted by: Kristen on 06/29/05 at 09:54 PM

What do you think it will be rated? (and for what reasons?)

Posted by: Colton on 06/29/05 at 10:17 PM

I must admit that I wasn't exactly your biggest fan after the Harry Potter movies, but then, I was dragged by my best friend. However, with the praise from the cast--not least of which Jesse's idea, which I adore--I will hereby apologize. If you have done half as well as they assure us you have, I will be one of your biggest fans. (And I think after the posts on here by Taye and Idina, we all know how funny they are.) Thank you so very much for making this movie. Since I cant see it on Broadway any time soon, this means so very much to me.

Hey! I'm 16 and from the Philippines. I just found out that there was gonna be Rent movie just now. I just saw the trailer and I'm really excited about the film and the good thing is the film is gonna show on my birthaday (November 11). Honestly, I don't really know much about Rent I just started to gain interest on it when I heard about it from my teacher. Too bad, they dont have a Filipino production of Rent here and I'm trying to look for the book but I can't find one. Oh, did anyone saw Lea Salonga playing the role of Mimi (I think)..was she good?

so glad 2 knew the "RENT" will b play on the movie.
can not wait.....
but cann't make sure will this movie come 2 TAIWAN?

Posted by: owen on 06/30/05 at 06:04 AM

I'm interested to see how the movie plays out (no pun intended). I have been waiting for the movie version for years. My best friend got me addicted and now there's no going back, as you can see from my email address. I'm so glad the OBC is back. I don't think anyone else could have played Roger or Mark, or... well any of them the way the OBC does. This movie will save all of us a lot of money because we'll only have to buy the movie once to watch it over and over, instead of tickets every year to fix our habit. Many, many thanks for this and I trust that only a Rent addict could do the play justice. I could go on for days about the impact Rent has had on me, but I'll spare you...

Posted by: angelrent12 on 06/30/05 at 07:35 AM

You convinced me yet again of your love for Rent when you mentioned how when you saw it, you wanted to go again the next night. It is definitely something every Renthead has felt...every time they want to see. I will probably see the movie many, MANY times in theaters and buy in the DAY it comes out on DVD. Thank you so much for doing this.

Chris Columbus,

To tell you the truth, when i heard that you were directing RENT i was apprehensive. I thought of your other movies, Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire, Hary Potter, and RENT realy didn't seem to fit in with these other films. I was worried that you were going to screw RENT up. But now that i have seen the trailer, the beautiful cinematography in it, the parts that you didn't cut out, and the parts you added in, I am actualy quite happy that you did direct RENT. I catualy jumped out of my chair at the theater after i saw the trailer. I now can't wait to see the film.

Posted by: dan on 06/30/05 at 11:36 AM

Hey Chris,
I am so releived that all of the cast and you are commited ot this project. I can't describe how much I loved the production. I could have sat in the theatre and watched Rent over and over to! I am a huge fan of you and all of the cast members. AH! I am so excited to see the movie, I have never been this excited to see a movie ever! I am so obsessed with Rent and now I am actually going to be able to see it over and over again! Thank you sooo much for making this film and being so dedicated, I am ecstatic to see the movie and I am counting down the days until November 11!

Wow, wow, wow, Mr. Columbus! That was such an amazing post!
All I can do is thank you and thank you. There's no way I can thank you enough. You have made all the fans' dreams come true. How lucky did we get that 6 out of 8 OBC members are in the film, and, in addition, we have 2 gorgeous and talented new members that I'm 100% certain are going to blow us all away? How many times has that happened in movie adaptations of stage shows? We are all so lucky to have you and your devotion and your INCREDIBLE cast in this movie. I have utmost confidence in the fact that this movie will be spectacular. Thank you for your devotion to the spirit of Rent. Thank you for keeping us posted. Thank you for casting the best possible group. Thank you for making our dreams about this movie come true!

I'm so glad to have found this sight. I worked with Bernie Telsey office on the film in the early stages--what a thrill to see the near final product. The cast, the filming all looks polished and fantastic. Can't wait till 11/11!

Best and Good luck with everything!

Chris Columbus;

If an actor approached me and suggested starting a repertory with him and seven other phenominal actors I certainly wouldn't turn him down. It's an incredible idea and I hope you choose to do it. It would give you a chance to make anything you want. That's the spirit of being an artist. And if any of the cast members aren't up for it... well I would be perfectly willing to take any place.

Hello RENT guys.... this is a Hello from México City and just to let you know that all the fans and that people we're turnin' into fans (My roomates dream about RENT Trailer 'couse I watch it every day) are so excited here... Now we know the shooting is finished we just said a great and loudy SI!!!...

It is just what we have wanted since we heard the first "Comenzamos en nochebuena" when the play came to Mexico.

Now the followers of Larson's legacy are waiting that all the people we told somtime about the Bohemian's history get to know what we've been talking about all this years...

And I want to share something with you all...
About 400 people around ´Mexico City and somo others in méxico are getting ready, becouse we're talking with a friend of us who is manager in a cinema, for having a fan's day... I mean we all mexican RENT lovers are going to be in the cinema watching the movi like once did rocky horror show. Costumes and all the RENT stuff. Unfortunatly we couldn't make contact yet with the distribution house for geting pass to the Premier in México, and we think perhaphs is not fair to the people who maybe dereves more be in there, tought we're going to do as posible as it is to can do it...

Many of us have dreamed about being there with the actors, if they're going to be here for promotion, to let them know the love of mexican people to RENT an to them (I still crying ev'ry time I hear I'll cover you).

Dreams come true.. It's a leap of Faith...
Thanks to all of you guys for giving us all this...

I CAN T WAIT FOR NOVEMBER 11th

Posted by: Pepe on 07/01/05 at 09:24 PM

Hi,

The initial thrill I felt when I heard Rent was coming out as a movie very quickly morphed into apprehension. Adaptations of a book or stage play into a movie are often disappointments for fans of the original creation, and Rent in particular...

Rent as a musical had a very personal effect on me, as I think it did on every fan. It's one of those things that while you can love it collectively with other people, it still touches you in a such a deep, private way that you feel a sort of possessiveness towards it - no one loves it as much as *I* do, no one got the meaning of that line like *I* did, no one appreciates the lyrics or melody of that verse or the costume or the setting, just as much as I do... A feeling that this is *my* play because I understand it so well. And part of that effect is caused by the fact that even if the play's been running for 9 years, you're still one of the chosen "few" who got to see it in real life.
When you turn that into something big and Hollywood-y that's released to the masses, you're afraid of - well, *I'm* afraid of two things: the first, that what I loves aabout the play won't get across onscreen, and the second, that "the masses" won't appreciate it like I did, and it'll turn into something cheap and commercialized and no longer personal.

...And then I saw the trailer.

Needless to say, a trailer that leaves me blinking and pressing my hand against my mouth, leaves absolutely nothing to worry about... you people did such an incredible job, and I have no doubt it's going to be an incredible movie.

I hope it arrives to Israel come November, or else the wait for the DVD is going to be painfully long...

Thanks for keeping it real :o) Way to go for choosing such an amazing cast...we have, like, fifteen fan clubs waiting for this movie!

Hi,
Mr. Columbus, I am so glad that you were the director for this movie, now that I think about it, I couldn't really think of anyone else I would rather have direct this movie. You're the man for the job.

It's good to hear that a RENT fan is directing this movie. I'm so nervous for this film to come out because i want it to be a success so that everyone can understand why im a such an obsessive freakk over this show. Also, because after seeing RENT you just wish you could see it over and over again and now you can (like you said in the blog). Please make our RENT amazing, and perfect and true to the show and to how Jonathan would've wanted it. <3. thank you

Love,
Melanie

I can't wait for the movie to come out, I'm excited to see the different things that can be done on camera. I am a dedicated fan to the musical and am so excited to see the movie and own the DVD.

Thanks!!!

Posted by: Jenna on 07/03/05 at 10:10 AM

now i'de watch Star Wars if the RENT cast was in it! For the movie.. okay so im thinking a little far ahead-- when the DVD does come out.. you should include like a montauge of RENT on broadway in the extras, and like all the access hollywood stuff and everything about RENT on TV in the extras because that would be so hot.. dont you think? and maybe you could include like some songs from other Jonathan Larson shows like Tick, Tick..BOOM!, I love those songs. LOL a little invance, but I think it would make the DVD so memorable.. I think every RENT fan would love that.

Chris, Of all your statements, the one you made about Adam as Roger is so true. I have seen Rent with and without Adam and there is NO comparison. Can't wait to see the film!

Posted by: bobbie on 07/03/05 at 07:30 PM

Yes~!! Adam is the only one who could have played Roger on film. I'm excited and hyped to see the film version~!

Thank you very much, Chris Columbus, for making this film. RENT is one of my favorite musicals of all time, and I'm so glad that someone actually took the time to go out and make this film. THANK YOU SO MUCH! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Posted by: Adam on 07/05/05 at 10:19 AM

I don't know if you'll read all these responses to your blog, but I had an idea.......

As an "extra" for the DVD, it would be so cool to have to cast do RENT from the stage of the Nederlander. Almost like a pirated version of the original play. The purity of it would make RENTheads orgasmic!

Posted by: Cary on 07/06/05 at 11:59 AM

Chris,

This is a big change from your recent projects (Harry Potter, Goonies) and I am glad to see that you chose RENT. Out of all the people who have ever taken a musical from stage and filmed it, I have never seen them so "into it" as you are. To know you are a "renthead" and your work with kids and teenagers is amazing. I am sure this movie is in great hands.

Thank you!

Chris,

The idea of a repertory company is exciting, and not just because of this group. True craft is hard to come by these days, and the entertainment industry isn't alone in this.

With each standard production, there is always a "ramping up," a period when the participants must get to know each other, break the ice. Then, during production, one has to learn as one goes, feeling out the scope of the abilities of the people around you, and discovering how they react to yours.

Forming a repertory would lessen that drastically, and allow the cast and crew to focus on the work, on the performances.

As far as I know, the only modern equivalent would be the group of actors that consistently show up in Christopher Guest's films. Despite the familiarity of the faces, the performances are always fresh, and you can tell that, on set, with familiarity comes confidence -- to explore the characters, to expand the performance (especially helpful when you work without a script, I presume).

I hope you seriously think about it -- I, for one, would be truly excited.

Hey! I just want to say thanks so much for making Rent into a movie! Living in Kansas, the opportunity never arises for me to go and see it live. Even so, I love all of the music and can sing the whole score (when no one's listening) from start to finish. I can't wait to see how the real thing actually looks! And I'm so happy that you also brought in many of the original cast members for the movie--I just think that's awesome and a great way to stay true to the live Rent feel!

Hello,
You have know idea how excited I was last night when I sitting in a movie theatre waiting for the movie previews to reel through when I was suddenly struck by a familiar toon; Season of Love. I was so ecstatic that it was being made into a movie that I almost screamed! I have been a Rent fan for just about six years now. Unfortunely, I have never seen this Broadway Musical, but I have listened to the oh so familiar soundtrack so many times that they run through my brain while I'm asleep like unruly pounding that sustains itself all through the night and into the morning. It's good to see that you have branched off from movies such as Harry Potter and the Goonies and into a style of performing that is like no other; the musical aspect, which is rarely touched by filming crews these days. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of your movies…Harry Potter and the Goonies are two of my all time favorite movies, but musical theatre is not only a blast, but it is, for me, the most interesting type of performing for actors and singers. It involves way more energy, and more precision. Anyways I wanted to congratulate you and the cast for being so successful in filming the movie and thank you for making this priceless musical into a long lasting and preserved movie. I'm sure if Jonathan Larson were still living he would be truly honored. I now understand the true meaning of being a "Renthead" and I thank you for making this incredible masterpiece into a forever lasting treasure.
Thank you!

Well, I'm a little late finding this blog but I'm oh so happy I did!

Mr. Columbus, thank you and congrats in advance!

I may have to go see a new movie just to see the trailer on a big screen and freak out, and embarrass my kids in the theater. They love it too, don't get me wrong!

Lastly, I may also have to induce myself into a coma or similar catatonic state for a while because the wait until November is KILLING ME!!

Much RENT-head love,

Chris, I am so excited to see the final results of your efforts. As a resident of San Francisco and a huge RENT fan, I had a great time hunting down the filming locations and getting glimpses of the stars. I have a question/request? Will you do a premier/fundrasier of RENT for St. Ignatius like you did for Christmas with the Kranks. That would be the best and I would so bring along all my friends! Good luck with editing!

Posted by: Colin on 07/17/05 at 12:34 PM

Dear Chris,
Reading your account and praise has convinced me that my friends and I aren't foolish in our giddy anticipation for the release of this film. The approach you wrote about, simply being able to repeatedly watch the musical while sharing it with the world beyond the theater on 41st St, thrills me. Congratulations on the wrap.

Rent has a peculiar history with me. After college, I was a teacher/counselor at a computer camp for kids in Philadelphia. My favorite camper was crazy about Rent, then in its third season, and she used its music in her 3D animation. I kind of kept it at arm's length for some reason.

Then, last summer I became involved with an amazing local theatre group. Naturally, many of them were fans. I began dating a girl from the group (who would play a killer Mimi), and we headed to New York on vacation. I finally saw the show. It blew straight into me, straight through me. "Why didn't I do this before?" I asked myself.

Upon our return to Toledo, we heard about the film and watched the trailer. Sitting in the theater this November will be coming full circle.

Regards!

I would like to thank you for making a film of Rent and cannot wait to see it. This musical is very dear to me because it was my favourite show that I saw my brother, Adam, perform in. Adam passed away September 2004 after suffering from a brain tumour and he would have been first in the queue to see the film. Please do it justice.

Posted by: Michael on 07/18/05 at 12:34 PM

Chris,
First of all I would like to add yet another thank you for doing this film. Also, I was wondering would it be a long shot to have a movie release of the film like star wars at midnight?? I think it would be the best just to have the truest rentheads show up for the very first showing of the movie and everyone be singing along and enjoying it for the first time. I say first time because everyone who would see it at midnight would most likely see it another 3 times or so before it left the theatres.

Thank you so much for what your doing with this film...I'm counting the days!

I just watched the trailer for the first time. I got chills and goosebumps and tears in my eyes. I saw the show three times on B'way and took a group of students to see it through Students Live and participated in their wonderful program. This show is near and dear to me and my family. I am so glad to see that from what I can tell, this movie is being directed by a bona fide " Renthead" who "gets it". I couldn't be happier . A quick question...how much of the music did you have to leave out, if any?

Thanks so much. It looks incredible so far. I cannot wait. I have always thought that someone needed to document this experience and from what I can see you were just the man to do it.

Chris,

I have truly been in love with RENT from the very beginning. I first heard the music on a two day car trip to florida. My sister had a tape that only made it to about Take me or Leave me. After the first day I really started enjoying the music. I think Maureen's Protest was what got me hooked. I referred to it as the "cow song" then.

I had the chance about five years later to see the musical in a tour that came through Dayton, Ohio. It was absolutly amazing and I became even more hooked on Rent. About a year ago I had the oppurtunity to see Rent again, but this time on Broadway. Wow! What an experiece. I found myself singing the songs in my head along with the cast. At intermission a friend turned to me and said, "Ok, Fill me in here, what exactly is going on?" I immediatly started spouting off the entire play. A man infront of us turned and looked at me and said, "wow". That's when I knew it was true...I was a complete and total renthead.

So in conclusion, I just want to thank you, Chris, for giving me and others like me such an amazing gift to watch day after day. Jonathan first gave us this gift, and now you are continuing to share it. I'm counting down the days.

Sincerely,

Another Renthead!

my friends and i have been in love with rent since we heard of it about 6 years ago when i heard of the movie we each cryed for over a half an hour each but ive heard rumors that this movie would be only in theateres and it wont be available on dvd please reassure me that im wrong

Posted by: Emma Polidoro on 07/24/05 at 01:57 PM

Thank you once again Mr. Columbus for reading these posts... it must take some serious energy. Anyway, to not ramble on, there has been some confusion in the Rent community over the time setting of the film. The stage production never states an exact time, though some songs hint it takes place at the end of the millenium...There are also scenes when Benny uses a cell phone. Also, the fact that Roger and Mimi take AZT hints that it does not take place in the 80s, since AZT was very very limited to the public (As expressed in Kushner's Angels in America). Anyway, the point of this post is that there are rumors in the Rent community (From Fridays edition of USA Today) that the film takes place in the 80s...This would be understandable, since Aids was spread a lot in the mid and late 80s, and also since Mr. Larson did begin writing the show in the 80s; yet, most fans i've spoken to about this feel that this will make the movie dated, and kill the message of No Day But Today if it takes place, well, 20 years ago. I hope you did not find any of this post upsetting, or anything of that sort. please reply when you get a chance.
Thank you

Well, It is so very interesting that a boy from Burger Chef can turn out such amazing things. I can still remember running to the back hall to check to see when we were working together. You were too, too funny. You made working there humanly possible! I was visiting LA recently and got an education from being an extra in an independent film in Manhattan Beach. It was small time, but I thought it must be thrilling to be part of a project, big or small. As I looked around and thought of so many future career opportunities for my students.I probably asked too many questions, but everyone was nice and patient with me. (I laughed too much and thought I was going to be fired as an extra!) I am currently teaching 6th grade students with learning disabilities. They loved hearing me read the first Harry Potter book aloud and I took that class to see the first film. I usually have a creative bunch, they usually just have difficulty reading and writing.
I can't help it, when I think of you, I have to laugh. Hope this finds its way to you. Hope you and yours are well and happy. Sheila

Dear Mr. Columbus,

How is the post-production for RENT progressing? Are you happy with the way it's coming together? What will be your next project after you finish with RENT and when will that start?

I have a variation on a question someone has been asking the RENT cast members. Do you read your fan mail? There is this wonderful scene in LOVE ACTUALLY where Hugh Grant, who's playing the British Prime Minister, reads a sampling of the many Christmas cards people have sent him and I was just wondering if that's anywhere close to how it really works.

Good luck with all of your efforts to help revive the film industry in San Francisco (July issue of 7 X 7). I think that would be just fantastic.

Yours very truly,
Sandy

Posted by: Sandy on 08/01/05 at 01:39 AM

Mr. Columbus,

I have to say that I am thrilled a Rent fan is actually making the movie. I have been a huge fan myself of this musical since it's initial debut. When movie reports surfaced awhile back I got worried about how the movie would turn out. When I heard some aspects of a Spike Lee version I started to cringe. But seeing all this now with you at the helm (including the testimonial by J. Larson's sister) makes me glow with excitement. Just the fact that most of the original cast is being used is enough to sell me. Here is my comment/suggestion... I know that movies are different from Broadway productions and songs have to be cut to make the movie flow and work for the silver screen and general public. It is a logical (though unfortunate) process that has to be accepted. I am a devote Lord of the Rings fan as well as an extreme Renthead... When Peter Jackson released the Extended Edition DVD's for the fans he was able to quench a need those Lord of the Rings fans had for more material... He knew this because much like yourself being a Rent fan, he himself was a fan of the Lord of the Rings. He understood the minds of the fans and gave them (more of) what thay wanted. Have you ever considered making a RENT: Special Edition DVD that replaces the 'new' dialogue scenes from the theater release with the actual song segments that were cut? I know it would probably require pickups, but hey it would make every Rent fan out there very happy to have the full musical version in their home. Plus it would be a great opportunity to get you all together again! :)

Just food for thought! :)

Thank you for your passion and I look forward to seeing the movie on opening night!

First off, the film looks like it will be amazing. I'm just a little bummed about the changing of the release date. Why was the decision made to not open wide on the 11th? People like me all over the country are dying because we have to wait an extra week and a half. Anyway, keep up the good work and I can't wait to see it!

Posted by: John Hohenstein on 08/08/05 at 06:05 AM

Chris Columbus,

I am so excited about Rent coming out on video. I saw the trailor for it yesterday and I believed I've watched it about four times now and the songs that the RENT cast performed on the Today show. I am beyond words for how thrilled I am, and think that you were a Great director for it.

By the way.. Tracie Thoms and Rosario Dawson were fantastic picks for Joanne and Mimi.. I can't wait to see them in it. I was wondering though, why is Fredi Walker not doing Joanne? I adore Tracie Thoms voice, though, and am glad she is doing it.

When I found out that you were directing the RENT movie, I was pretty excited. I've seen a couple of your other movies and absolutely loved them, so I doubt I'll be disappointed in this movie, since it's already fabulous and with a great director like you, it should be excellent. Anyway, I agree with you about the talent that this cast has. Anyway, good luck with the movie and I can't wait to see it.

(Just wanted to say that this is the entry that I read when I need a good pick-me-up. I'm so excited for the movie, and I'm glad that [despite my apprehensions when I first heard about the project -- and I believe that all true Rent fans were at least a little apprehensive when hearing that our beloved show was being turned into a movie], the director is someone who appreciates the OBC and understands the genius of Jon and who is, quite like myself, an "obsessive Rent fan.")

Mr. Columbus,

Thank you so much for your commitment to preserving Mr. Larson's story and for the wisdom to reunite most of the original cast for your film. I am so eager for November!!

I love Mr. Martin's idea of a reperatory film company. The talent of these performers and your skill as a director would be such a wonderful combination. Please strongly consider this suggestion, I think with this group you would be looking at box office magic.

Thank you again, I am looking forward to seeing this film and wish the best for everyone attached to this project.

Rent has officially been out in theatres for 5 days, and I've already seen it twice. I'm planning on going once a week while it's in theatres, but we'll see if that works out.

Anyways, I just wanted to thank you, Mr. Columbus, and the entire cast and crew for bringing such life to the film version of Rent. I've seen the play 5 times, the first time in the Nederlander with the Original Cast, and I was still overwhelmed by the movie. It has the same visceral feel to it as the play, and the two new main cast members are outstanding.

Thanks for giving us "Rent-Heads" a movie to cherish...

I think your comments on the actors are bang-on. Everyone did an amazing job in this film and you should definitely think about what Jesse said, it'd be cool! I did notice one little flub-up though. In "What You Own", when Roger was on the bus headed back to NY and the camera pans across him, Adam was wearing his wedding ring. Dunno if anyone else noticed that or if I'm the only one who's odd enough to notice something like that. Well, keep up the good work and I hope someday to get a chance to work with you.
