How The Hell I Got Here by Tracie Thoms (Joanne)

"How did I get here, how the hell?"

I can't explain how often this lyric runs through my mind. It's my personal soundtrack, and it's on a constant loop. I'm still in shock, and we're almost finished shooting! When we started rehearsal in November, I was sure it was an elaborate episode of "Punk'd" and Ashton and his crew were hiding behind the dance mirrors...or even worse, that they would change their minds and fire me!

But alas, it's six months later, and I'm still here! I figured I should introduce myself! It's funny, Rosario and I were hanging out at the recording studio one day and I decided to look at the IMDB message boards. We discovered all the questions about Rosario's casting as Mimi. As we continued to search, we found one posting about me. It went something like this: "Nobody's talking about Tracie Thoms being cast as Joanne. What does everyone think about that?" The response was, "The reason nobody's talking about her is because nobody knows who the hell she is," followed by, "Yeah, who the hell is she?" I laughed and thought, "Yeah, who the hell am I?"

It is a really good question. You have six original cast members, one movie star, and me...random brown chick. Which leads me to my soundtrack... "How did I get here? How the hell?" Let's explore this question, shall we?

I saw all these guys in the show in '97, and it changed my life. I could not believe what I was looking at. I became obsessed. I had to be in RENT! I'd just been accepted into Julliard's Drama Division, but I didn't care. I'd give it up to be in RENT. For my first audition, I stood in line in the cold all night, only to lose my voice an hour before I could get in. My second audition was better, and I got a callback for Joanne, followed by another callback, followed by the big, final callback. This big, final callback fell on the Friday after I started Julliard.

As Karma would have it, I lost my voice again (I was doing "HAIR" at the time) on the Sunday before. I was on steroids my first week of school in order to get my voice back so I could book the show and leave school. Didn't work. I was still hoarse, and I couldn't hit the high "C" in "Seasons." I went to Julliard instead. But much of my 1st semester was spent at rehearsal rooms with my classmate Jeffrey Carlson singing "Another Day." Fast forward four years later. I'm about to graduate, and Spike Lee is directing the RENT movie. I audition and get a callback for Spike. Great! We had a blast! I was so thrilled! He walked me to the elevator and asked, "So, you never did the show?"

Me: "No, I auditioned."

Spike: "You ain't get it?"

Me: "No Spike, I didn't get it."

Spike: "Who were you auditioning for?"

Me: "Joanne."

Spike: "Joanne? You too young for Joanne. What you gonna be, a baby lesbian?"

Me: "...."

Keep in mind I had auditioned for Joanne five minutes before this conversation, so I knew that wasn't going to happen. But I was told he liked me lots and would try to use me somehow in the movie. Well, that movie never happened. I auditioned for the show one more time the following year, and was told "Bernie Telsey (the casting director) said you will do this role sometime. It's just a matter of getting the mix right. But you will play Joanne."

At this point, I had to let RENT go because it clearly wasn't meant to be. And I was okay with it. I was working a lot. Doing regional theatre, a tour, a series, a pilot, off Broadway, another series ("Wonderfalls"), a Broadway show ("Drowning Crow") and a final off Broadway show when I found out Chris Columbus was now directing. I went to Bernie Telsey's office to go on tape for Joanne, and then I forget about it. Surely Alicia Keys or Beyonce or Queen Latifah would be cast.

I'm doing my show a month later and in one week I find out I was cast in a musical and a series. How exciting! The role on the series was written for me! I was elated! Then three days later, out of the blue, I get a call.

"Apparently you're a front runner for Joanne in RENT."

"WHAT???"

"They'll let us know tomorrow."

"WHA...WHAT???"

The next morning at noon, on the corner of 1st Street and 6th Ave in the Village, my phone rings.

"You got the offer for Joanne!"

"WHAT??!!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?

There I am screaming at the top of my lungs on the streets of NY into a cell phone. I was a sight, but I didn't care. I proceeded to walk forty blocks in a daze, calling everyone I know. I couldn't believe it! I did have to go to San Francisco to meet Chris Columbus to solidify the offer, but it was mine. From a taped audition. Crazy!!!

So...here I am. Plucked from obscurity into my dream show-the movie version. That's how I got here. I'm as confused about it as everyone on the boards. But it's been unbelievable. I'm the Renthead who won the lottery and got to be in the movie. The first day of rehearsal, we were singing "Tango: Maureen," and Anthony Rapp walked in and started singing with me, and I thought I was going to pass out. I stared at the piano. "This is weird...very weird..." I mean it was him...for real. Not my CD, but standing there singing at me.

It's been quite an adjustment. But everyone embraced Rosario and I as if we've always been here. And Rosario and I had to scream like groupies when Anthony and Adam would sing anything, and we finally accepted that we were really here. Ashton was not behind the mirrors. I finally got the courage to look back there. That's how the hell I got here, and that's who the hell I am. I'm so thrilled to meet you.

Wow, this is one of the best blogs yet!! Thanks a million for giving us a glimspes into your life. Sounds like you are an amazing choice for Joanne, a true RENT-head. Can't wait to see you on the big screen. Keep smiling!
-Caroline
P.S Please keep checking the IMDb posts, we would love to hear from you (hint hint!)

Posted by: Caroline on 06/20/05 at 08:47 AM

Congrats on the part then Tracie! (Even if it is 6 months to late) You soun great on the trailer, so you must be an awesome Joanne.

Posted by: Staci on 06/20/05 at 08:54 AM

Nice to meet you, baby! This has obviously been a long time coming. Can't WAIT to see you up on the big screen. Congratulations :)

Posted by: amy on 06/20/05 at 08:56 AM

Wow! *hugs madly* A fellow RENThead!!! You did win the lottery, the exact thing I've always wanted (except I'd make a better Maureen). I probably would have passed out if Anthony Rapp walked in a room and started singing with me. I'm embarassed to admit that I was one of the people going, "Who is this girl? Is she good enough for MY Rent?" (does anyone else feel that sort of possessiveness about a show they love?), but after this post, I can go run back and tell them: "Who is she? She's one of us. She's just one of us who gets to be in the movie." All my reservations about Rosario have been previously lifted and now the ones about you are gone too. I can't wait for this movie.

A new fan,
Bethy

Hey girl! GREAT post! As my parents always say: things don't happen when you WANT it to happen, but when it NEEDS to happen (does that make sense?). Obviously you were meant for this role at this particular time, so ENJOY it, girl! I think you have a great voice, and you're going to be fantastic as 'Joanne'! Can't wait for the movie to come out!

Posted by: Angela on 06/20/05 at 09:01 AM

It's so great that 'Joanne' went to such a dedicated Renthead :)I absolutely love your singing on 'Seasons' and I'm so very excited to see you perform in the movie. Very cool to finally be 'introduced' and I hope you post much more in the future

Posted by: Beth on 06/20/05 at 09:07 AM

Tracie,
LOL! I'm really glad that I finally learned something more about you! You were amzing in the trailer! It's great and sorta comforting to know that you saw the show first and loved it, too. It's sorta like a fellow Renthead getting the part, you know? I think that that's every Renthead's dream come true and I'm so happy that it happened for you. I'm so glad that you're Joanne in the movie because when you hit that note in the trailer, it honestly blew me away! I love Rent and I'm sure that it's going to be a hit! I can't see how it's going to let anyone down. You guys work really hard and it's already evident in from the trailer. I would really like to thank you and the rest of the cast for keeping us up-to-date. I can't wait to see you and the rest of the cast in it! Well, all the best, all my love, and all my thanks!

What a wonderful and encouraging post! Congratulations on finally having gotten the part you always wanted.
After the movie is released, I'm sure nobody will ask "who the hell is she" again, because you'll have a place in all the rentheads' hearts.

Hugs,
Pandora.

Nice to meet you too! It's so great of you to introduce yourself to us; I admit I also had no idea who you were. I've heard wonderful things however, and I know something must be right for you to have this opportunity, so best of luck wrapping it all up and I very much look forward to seeing you in November!!

Posted by: Rachel on 06/20/05 at 09:13 AM

Hey!! It is WONDERFUL to finally hear from you. From what i have seen in the trailer (and your story)you are THE PERFECT choice for Joanne. I wish you much success. Keep checking the IMDB boards. I will make sure things change :)

Posted by: Jeana on 06/20/05 at 09:15 AM

Damn. If the acting/singing thing doesn't work out...you could be a writer. ;-)

When i first heard that a rent movie was being made by chris columbus and they were considering justin timberlake to star in it, i cried. I'm not exaggerating. I cried. That was the antithesis about everything that rent is about. But i have a friend whos a friend of Idina's and he told me that she said that chris was actually great. Then of course the obc thing. Then, not gonna lie, i was disappointed when i heard about fredi walker not being on board, but when the trailer aired a few weeks ago and i heard you pop up to that crazy note, and when i sat down today and read your blog...i'd rather it be you than her...and i truly mean that. Rock on baby, you seem amazing...

Posted by: Elizabeth on 06/20/05 at 09:19 AM

Thank you for this fun post and a little more insight into the goings on with the movie! I sure am glad to get so much feedback that the movie is staying true to the story because I was worried something would be lost in the transition from stage to screen. Its a big comfort to read your entry (and the other cast members too!) and know that things are in good hands. I can't wait to see the movie and know that one more RENThead is VERY excited about everything! Way to hit the lottery girl! =)

Heather =)

so great to find out who you are tracie! you're are the luck renthead who won the lottery :-D and thanks for retelling your tale for all of us other rentheads! i am so excited to see this movie - more excited than any other movie - ever. i know you all are doing it justice.

Posted by: erica on 06/20/05 at 09:25 AM

Wow... As each new post is displayed I can't help but feel more pride in being a RENThead. This cast is such an outstanding group of people and the PERFECT choice to spread the message. It is like all of us here reading the posts are already your friends.
I think I speak for all of us when I say that we are honored to have this connection to you (the cast). Too many 'stars' forget about us peions, but the respect we have for you we see reflected back on us.
This movie is so unique in its entirety; the intimacy of the RENT environment is something really special.
I am so glad to hear that all is well and cannot wait until November 11th, where I can most assuredly be found camping out at my theatre. Thank you!

Wow, what a story!

I have to admit here, for the whole world, that you have just completed one of my dreams. I'm so proud for you because I know what it's like to have a dream and have it finally come true, and, even though you guys are almost done, I wish you and everyone else the best of luck. You've got a great sense of humor and I can't wait how you bring out Joanne in the movie, it'll be something to see, as will be the whole movie itself. Again, congratulations on your dream being a reality, and best of luck to you for the rest of your life.

It's great to hear from you, Tracie. I wondered for a while if you could do Joanne justice. Then I heard you on the trailer. Spectacular.

Give Anthony and Adam a hug from me, would you?

Posted by: Ashley Horn on 06/20/05 at 09:50 AM

What an awesome story! It's so fun and comforting to hear that you, like all of us, are a RENThead too. It's a fun group to be in, don't you think? When I met you on the set and asked you to sign my RENT bible, you were so gracious about it and even pointed out that you weren't actually in the book. But you definitely are Joanne to me and I'm so thrilled that it is your signature in my RENT bible. Your voice absolutely gives my chills and my favorite part of the RENT trailer is hearing you rock it out in "Seasons of Love".

Always remember that everything happens for a reason and this is YOUR chance to become Joanne. Embrace it and enjoy it! I can't wait for Novemeber.

You kick butt!!!!! It's amazing to see a RENThead like us living their dream. We all love it, and you love it too. And you kicked the hell out of "Season of Love," seriously. I love hearing you sing it on the trailer. I am sooo excited.

Tracie you just made EVERY RENThead cry. You fulfilled a fantasy that none of us will ever have a chance to do. Not only did you FINALLY get the part of Joanne but you will be the one people will remember.

Everyone was skeptical at first if you can do it, but the trailer proved us all wrong and you blew us away.

I can't wait to see you as Joanne! I'm sure you are absolutely amazing and you sound so sweet! It made me feel really good knowing how hard you worked to get to this role and how you kept missing out on the role, and look where you are now! I'm 16 years old and an aspiring actress and your words really meant a lot to me! So thank you so much! And congrats on being Joanne! You deserve the role so much!

Now see I think I was one of the rare RentHeads...that almost died of giddiness when I heard your name. I remember my friend Maddy reading me the names of who had gone in to replace Daphne and Fredi...and she said Tracie Thoms and I screamed. Because see I was a girl who had an obsession for a show that only got to air four episodes *huggles Wonderfalls* And in my obsession I read up on all the actors and actresses and I knew you had an awesome voice. So honestly I don't think I ever once regretted that Fredi couldn't play the role. And then when the Trailer came out and I watched it...I knew I was absolutely right. You are completely stunning and I cannot wait to see you playing out your dream on a big screen.

~Lisha

Posted by: Alisha on 06/20/05 at 11:32 AM

Tracie thank you so much for that post! Who better to play Joanne than a fellow renthead? And judging from your solo in the trailer, a renthead who can SING (unlike this renthead who makes lame attempts at singing in the car or the shower, but leaves the big stuff to the professionals). Congratulations on getting the part and I can’t wait to hear you and Idina tear apart ‘Take Me Or Leave Me.’ See you in the movies,
Lauren (way up in Canada and having RENT withdrawal)

Although I trust professionals to make good choices for this film, it's still been hard to accept that there will be two people I'm not used to seeing in these roles in the film. Reading this entry and hearing about your passion for RENT from before the film days made me that much more secure in accepting this. I'm so happy to hear that such a big fan has had the opportunity to fill one of these roles. I'm looking forward to seeing your take on the part!

I can't blame you for screaming like a groupie when Adam and Anthony sang. I think most would. I'm totally looking forward to seeing you in this movie. Surely you can't have been plucked from obscurity without a good reason. ;)

Just wanted to say that I loved you in Wonderfalls and I can't wait to see you in RENT! I was very excited when I learned it was you playing Joanne. :)

Posted by: Ingrid on 06/20/05 at 12:22 PM

You are incredible. Absolutely, amazingly incredible. I remember when I met you the day you were filming the Happy New Year scene in San Francisco, you were so nice and sweet to everyone. I remember how you were so surprised to hear us ask for your autograph and pictures with you. I am so glad that you are able to fulfill your dream, you totally deserve it. I CANNOT wait to see the movie when it comes out!!

Posted by: alyssa on 06/20/05 at 12:28 PM

WOW. The dream come true. That's fantabulous. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. And I think most of us would have done the same thing you did...scream when Anthony and Adam sing. Congratulations on achieving your dream...did I spell that right? Does it matter? Guess not.
Thanks again, Tracie!

My dream was similar to yours but I never got out of suburbia to pursue it. Not yet anyway. I'm only 20. Maybe there will be a revival cast in a few years and who knows - it seems from this entry that dreams CAN come true.

Maureen, here I come.

Posted by: Noelle on 06/20/05 at 12:32 PM

It's funny, that same line's been going round my head today. Slightly different reason though.

I loved reading that. Sounds like it just wasn't your time before. But it is now, and judging by what we've heard from the trailer I'm willing to bet a lot of us will be very glad of that. And that probably didn't make any sense whatsoever.

Aaaaaand, it's so nice to know that even those of you who are far too good at what you do have voice trouble at the most inopportune times too.

I'm trying very hard not to squee now. How the heck am I going to hold out until whenever they finally get round to releasing the film in the UK?

Ditto what everyone else said about how we'd love to see you on the IMDB boards (if you're allowed, that is).

Posted by: Alison on 06/20/05 at 12:36 PM

Congratulations on getting the role. I had read somewhere that you had always wanted to be in RENT, and it's wonderful that you finally got the role. I'm sure you'll make a wonderful Joanne.

Posted by: melynda on 06/20/05 at 12:37 PM

Awesome! Your journey started out as a RENThead. I can't wait to see you in theaters. I LOVED your high note during 'Seasons of Love' on the RENT trailor.

Tracie --

I'll admit, I am one of those who wasn't too thrilled about your casting. After reading your blog entry, however, I have totally changed my outlook. You are PERFECT for this part -- down to earth, funny, and, after seeing the trailer, you have a kick-ass voice. I had heard that you'd auditioned for Joanne before, but I didn't realize that you auditioned multiple times! Clearly this is what you've wanted for a long time, and your persistence has finally paid off -- you are in the movie! Your performance will be preserved forever! You are the person who is representing all of the other Rentheads who'd KILL to be in your position, and I now realize that you will put your heart and soul into your acting and singing. Congratulations on having your dream fulfilled!

Tracie.
Thank you for the amazing post. It was wonderful to hear your experiences with Rent. I'm sure that you will play the role of Joanne above and beyond anyone's imagination.
I'm scared to say it among RENTheads but, I have not seen the musical. *ducks thrown fruit* I have heard the OBCR! The thing is, I was going to watch Rent for my Mahondra! I found out about the movie through your involvement and though I have been introduced to other talents of Rent I am thoroughly anticipating your performance.
I'm glad you are having a wonderful time. Best Wishes.

"My two favourite J's. Janet and Joanne!"

Wow Tracie, that's such a cool story! Congrats on achieving your dream! Thank you soo much for fnally posting, I cannot wait to see you in the movie!

Posted by: Barbara on 06/20/05 at 01:17 PM

loved your entry- it's been said before and rightfully said again, you deserve it big time. Karma and timing and all that jazz allowed you to arrive at this destination at this moment in time, so go on then and seize it :)

p.s. I wrote this after Idina Menzel's blog as well, but just FYI, my best friend was an extra in the film and she's in the Take Me or Leave Me scene... basically she'd been going through some major questioning of direction and purpose and "is acting the right thing for me to do" etc... and you guys re-inspired her 110%! (and subsequently turned me a loving shade of lime green with envy, haha) Can't wait to see the movie!

Posted by: Libby on 06/20/05 at 01:34 PM

I <3 your kickass attitude! I am so excited for you... and I cannot wait to see you on the giant screen! I know you will make all us RENTheads proud (and knowing you were a RENThead too makes it so much cooler!). All the best Ms. Thoms.... You will be amazing!

Posted by: Owen Hughes on 06/20/05 at 01:35 PM

Tracie, your story was so inspirational!
I'll admit, I was also one of those people thinking "Tracie Thoms for Joanne? Who's she?", but then I saw the trailer online, and any doubts I had about your casting were shattered the minute your solo began. The trailer made me out-of-my-mind pshyced to see the film and your preformance (Joanne is one of my favorite charcters in the show), and now, after reading your entry, I'm even more elated. You have an incredible voice, and perfect pitch. I was blown away when you hit that last note! Brava!!
I'm also very confident in Rosario as Mimi, judging by what I saw in the trailer.

You have my complete support and admiration!

From one crazy rent-head to another,

What an amazing, revealing, funny, touching and inspiring post!! Up until now I knew nothing of your magical journey to RENT. I am moved to tears. Thank you so much for opening your heart to us. Our heart is now forever open to you:) I feel like I just made a new friend!! Through your post, we (fans) will now have a deeper emotional connection to YOU (and Joanne!) on screen!! This blog, being true to the spirit of RENT provides us all with a "connection in an isolating age". I'll be there on 11/11/05 cheering you on Tracie! I wish you all the best on your journey. This film is shaping up to be what all the fans had hoped for, and for being a part of that, we thank you. You, personally, know how we all feel when you sing the songs, read the lines, and perform the scenes. We're enchanted and happy to have you on board.

Congratulations again,

I enjoyed reading your post. Thanks so much, Tracie!

Wow, that really is like a fantasy. Good for you. {oh, and i know what you mean about not being able to control screaming like a groupie when ADAM sings...ahhh}
At first I had thought, well Joanne should be ..heavier..??(that was weird), but you look and sound awesome for the role, especially from what I've seen in the trailer. I can't wait to see you fulfill your dream!

~from one RENThead to another {very blessed} one~ luv ya, see ya on the silver screen!!!

Posted by: Chrissy on 06/20/05 at 02:36 PM

Oh, I just wanted to let you know--I think I'm the most like Joanne in her personality! Let's see...I do make lists in my sleep; I always look before I leave; I love margins and discipline.
Urrghh and I hate mess! What to do with our type huh? ...*sigh*

Posted by: Chrissy on 06/20/05 at 02:42 PM

Aww! This was so cute, seriously.

You really ARE living out the dreams of all the RENT fans out here. And as for being blown away when Anthony walked in, that totally would've been me. "Wait, this really isn't my CD playing...oh my God!!" and I would've passed out right then and there.

I was relatively new to RENT when news that the movie was being made came out, so I didn't know most of the OBC, so hearing you were in it was just another name. I was curious until I saw the trailer, and you sound and look absolutely AMAZING. You definitely deserve to be there. It seems like it was a long road to get there, but this part is definitely for you.

Good luck with the movie!

Posted by: Lauren on 06/20/05 at 02:51 PM

Oh, and you've also successfully gotten "Halloween" stuck in my head. Just so you know.

Posted by: Lauren on 06/20/05 at 02:52 PM

Tracie,

Thank you so much for telling us your story.

Wonderfalls was such a great show. I provided them with those mugs and magnets for the set. Too bad it wasn't picked up. But then again it led you here, so all's well.

Note to everyone reading this. Get out their and promote the movie, this blog, to as many people as you can. For everything this play has given you, its time for you to give it back and make these people rich (Tracie I hope you got some back end points)

Hola Tracie!
Wow great story! It is nice meeting you too. A story like that gives all of us RENTheads hope. My dream role is Mimi, hell you never know! I thought you looked and sounded awsome on the trailer! I am so excited for November 11, its crazy I have never been this excited to see a movie before. I swear if there are really chatty people or some baby crying I will shot them myself. Just kidding..kinda hehe. Anyways I think that it is so cool you got this opportunity and I have to say I might have passed out if Anthony was right there singing with me! I know that when I go see plays or musicals and I really love a preformer, I wonder what they are like in real life. It must have been so cool to get to know the cast of Rent!!!! OMG you are so lucky. Okay I'll stop gushing now. xoxo Hannah

Helloooooo, Tracie Thoms!

I was excited when I read you snagged the role of Joanne! I actually own "Wonderfalls" on DVD (and had the season recorded on VHS from their original airings). Loved you in the show and am SURE I'll dig your performance of Joanne. ...As many have said already, from your performance in "Seasons of Love" alone, I'd say we are in for more than just a treat! CONGRATULATIONS, girl! Can't wait to see what else your career has in store (because SO FAR SO GOOD!)!

Much love and respect,
Ryan

Posted by: Ryan on 06/20/05 at 04:03 PM

Tracie, I am so overwhelmingly happy that you are a part of this.

Rent is a very special experience. It unites us all, those who fall under it's spell.

There are some people who have participated in Rent, in casts, or maybe backstage, or even in the audience, who haven't ever really gotten it. To them, maybe, it's just another show.

But you get it. And I truly believe that Rosario gets it. And that makes you special and dear to me in a way that people who do not get it simply aren't.

I can't really speak on behalf of the entire Renthead community, but I can speak for myself.

Welcome to the family!

Posted by: Michael on 06/20/05 at 04:04 PM

I LOVE you! You're like... me! teehee... except I couldn't be Joanne because I'm several shades of pale, pale white. But still! You sound so amazing, and I'm so happy that you have finally gotten this oppertunity! It looks like we'll be seeing a lot of you in the future too!!! I'm soo excited to see this movie! Is it November yet?

What an amazing post.

At school today during lunch, I thought I'd do a quick check of the blog to see if it had been updated yet. When I came on and found your super long entry (thank you for that btw! the longer, the better :P), I started smiling; by the time I had read through your post I was laughing and grinning so widely that people around me were giving me funny looks. It was as though the sun had just burst out behind the clouds; for the rest of the day I had this glow inside of me; during my (evil) math final I just kept thinking about your post (and had Halloween's lyrics stuck in my head).

I admit I had doubts about your initial casting, when I along with everyone else didn't know 'who the hell you were.' But after the trailer came out I was blown away, and this blog entry erased any last lingering doubts in my mind. I know that you will make a FANTASTIC Joanne, and I'm so excited to see you and everyone else in the movie.

You rock for not giving up on your dreams! And I must say thanks again for sharing your story in that humorous, inspiring, and friendly blog - it totally made my day. Best of luck in the future!

Posted by: Carla on 06/20/05 at 04:54 PM

I have to admit I was one of the "WHo the hell are you? people", but after reading something from Anthony on the Broadway World board a ways back, I knew you'd be just fine. It's nice to finally "meet" you, and after watching the Rent trailer, I am more excited then ever to sit in a movie theatre to watch a show I love so much. I think Rent fans are connected in such a way that no other show is connected, and it is such a great feeling. From one Rent fan to another, break a leg!

Posted by: Krissy on 06/20/05 at 05:00 PM

You sound like an awesome person. I have absolutely no doubt you'll be an excellent Joanne ;-) and you sound great in the trailer!

Have fun with the rest of shooting!

What an amazing story! I am absolutely thrilled to have you playing Joanne, you seem like such a sweetheart and I have fully believe you will bring a lot to the role. Keep up the good work! Much love!! <3

Posted by: Lauren on 06/20/05 at 06:07 PM

Congratulations on your role! I'd heard a lot of good things about Wonderfalls and was going to check it out...then Fox cancelled it. Whatever, this is MUCH better!

Believe me, as a long-time Rent fan, I totally understand what a huge deal this must be for you! And it's like we've got one of our own in there with the rest of the OBC! I know I would freak out too if Adam and Anthony were singing with me, although you and Rosario were probably much more professional than I could ever be in that situation.

The fact that you're the "unknown" member of the cast makes me all the more excited to see you, because you were good enough to hold your own against and ultimately beat out the Alicia Keys/Beyonce/Queen Latifahs out there! You sound AMAZING in the trailer, honestly, you sound better than any Johanne/soloist I've seen in the show. The producers must be kicking themselves now for not casting you in the show sooner! Now you're THE Johanne!

Posted by: Amy on 06/20/05 at 06:10 PM

Well what can I say that hasn't already been said? I can only imagine what your life must be like right now. I got the RENT cd for Christmas about 4 years back and as i'm sure you know the first moment you hear Adam belt out "One Song Glory" and makes your knees weak, and hearing Jesse's "Cover you" reprise brings tears to your eyes. I've been fortunate enough to see the show several times but i'll admit no Maureen has a more powerful set of lungs then Idina, and no Mark has ever touched me the way Anthony has. I'm so completley jealous of you what can I say! You are going to be fabulous, and i wish you the best of luck. It means so much to have you guys write these blogs and it means the world to me, just a poor college student in Boston, to have every single one of you in this movie. I can't wait to see it and please continue to have the time of your life.

Hey Tracie!!
Thanks so much for posting! That is an amazing story! I'm so excited for you (and us Rentheads)that you finally get to be Joanne!
It's true, I didn't really know who you were when I read you would be in the film, and I said to myself over and over: I hope she's good, I hope she's good. And now after seeing you in the trailer (and reading your blog) I think you are the perfect choice for Joanne! You are absolutely INCREDIBLE in your solo for seasons of love! So, I know you've got extreme talent, and now today after reading your blog I see that you love and understand RENT and happen to be an incredibly sweet person! Also, nice touch with the quote at the beginning! I squealed when I read it; Halloween is one of my very favorite songs. And your reaction to singing with Anthony, Adam, and the others is just like mine would be- But I, unlike you, am not an incredibly talented singer, so I'd probably be a bit more crazy haha.
Anyway, thanks again for the great story and I hope to hear more soon! You have my complete love and faith- you're gonna be an astounding Joanne!
love,
Chelsea

Hey Tracie! :)
You're making your way to the top! From the moment I heard that they'd cast a fresh new face for Joanne, I had confidence in you! That's what RENT is all about- casting raw, unknown talents and this is the first of, I'm sure, many great things to come.

And no worries...I think everyone screams like a fangirl when Adam and Anthony sing, so you and Rosario are in good company! ;-)

Posted by: Natalie on 06/20/05 at 06:53 PM

I thought I was excited before about the movie, but after reading your post, I'm even MORE excited 'cause you're living your dream, and I think the dream of every RENT fan (myself included, just with MarK). Then I saw the trailer, and I was just AMAZED by you. You blew my mind. Your face when you started singing, you look so beautiful and so happy to be there. I am so excited. I can guarantee that after this movie comes out, those IMDbers won't be saying, "Who the hell is she?" But they will be saying, "Where the hell did she come from!?" And they will join my Traci Thoms ban-wagon! You better keep on keepin' on. You have a fan in me!!

Here on the blog we absolutely love you and are fully aware of who you are...(as I am sure, soon after this movie is released into theatres, many others will know of you as well).

Coming from a fellow "Renthead," having seen the trailer, you definitely have succeeded in doing "Seasons of Love" justice! My friend Danielle and I can't get over the way you hit that "C"...just beautiful!

To all of us rent-heads who dream about singing with actors like Anthony Rapp and Idina Menzel I can only imagine how amzing and surreal this whole experience must be. I am sure you will do an amazing job as Joanne. You are beautiful and talented from what clips and pictures I have seen from the shoot and the trailer. November 11th cannot come soon enough for all of us. I ams o glad you had a great time on the set and that your dream of being in this amazing show came true. Goodluck with the rest of the shoot and in whatever you do. Thanks for loving RENT!!!

Tracie,

It's so great to hear from you! You sound like such a sweet person and it's great to hear from one of the new cast members of the movie. It sounds like you're having an amazing time with filming and I can't wait to see the final product and to see you as Joanne. I know if I were in your shoes I probably wouldn't be able to breath from the surrealism and excitement so I'll be the first to admit I'm a little envious but you deserve this after all those auditions. :-P Plus from listening to the RENT trailer you sounded awsome as Joanne. I think its really admirable and cool that you found a love for RENT and followed your desire to be part of the show and it paid off in the end. That is definitly something I can relate to. Good luck and I look foward to reading your next post! You've definitly got a new fan in me. :-)

Tracie -- I cannot wait to see you as Joanne in the movie. The trailer is great...counting down the minutes to the movie opening! I saw the original cast on Broadway and have seen the show again 2 times here in Seattle with my husband. We LOVE it and our 8-year-old son LOVES singing "RENT" on the way to school daily! He always wants ME to be Joanne :-) Your voice and stage presence in the clips are wonderful. I'm so very glad you finally got your dream part and that timing and karma worked in your favor this time. This truly is your time...we now know how the hell you got here! And I for one can't wait to see you in the movie! Best regards, Laurel :-)

Tracie,

Just wanted to say...excellent work on Wonderfalls. I still watch my DVDs on a regular basis. So...I guess I was one of the folks who knew who the hell you were, and jumped up and down when I found out you landed this role. You are very blessed to have been able to work with the likes of Time Minear and Chris Columbus...and not to mention the original cast of this lovely show! The first words out of my mouth when I saw the trailer for this film were, "Damn! Mohandra (sp?) can SING!"

I'm absolutely thrilled about seeing you onscreen again. Your personality and voice (speaking or singing) are a delight. You are THE woman to BE Joanne. Congratulations!

Love, Eason

Hey Tracie, you are probably living out the dream of so many rent-head/ drama students in this country!! I'm in college right now for theater, working on my voice, thought of auditioning for the show, but still don't have the courage,(or the acting knowledge) yet to get up there. I think you have the hardest job of all out of the cast. One of two newbies, amonge these seasoned RENT pros, the other newbie being a movie star, and big shoes to fill in that part. THe thing is........ from the little I saw in the teaser trailer, I think you'll be knockin um dead across the nation every time you not only hit that high "c" in "seasons", but every time your on the screen! keep knockin-um dead chica! Can't wait till u hit broadway!!

Posted by: terri on 06/20/05 at 09:29 PM

I am so happy to hear that you have this part. I can't wait to see it. Every year I listen to it at Christmas, its my tradition it means a lot to me and I know it's silly to say this it means a lot to see you in it. I loved your in Wonderfalls and I am so happy to see you here. I said that already didn't I.

GOOD LUCK.........I KNOW YOU WILL BE AWESOME !!!!

Tracie, I just watched a handful of episodes of "Wonderfalls." You're a fabulous actress. I am definitely looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the cast in the film. Best of luck!

Tracie - So glad to have you on board for RENT in Joanne's part. I can't admit to having seen you in much, but Wonderfalls is in my top three favorite TV shows ever, so when a friend called to say, "Well... most of the OBC is back, except that Rosario Dawson is replacing Daphne Ruben-Vega and someone named Tracie Thoms is replacing Fredi Walker?" I think I screamed at that point, shrieking on about the "Wonderfalls Tracie Thoms?" I'm so so excited about seeing you in this role, and have been since I heard the great news. And now, reading this post (which made me cry), I couldn't be more excited. If I could be standing in line for my tickets, I would be. I'd be like one of those Star Wars guys. Only should I wear a rubber cat suit? Or maybe skin tight blue pant-things? Anyway, it's a darn good thing that I have Fridays off, because I'm pretty sure I'll be looping back into the line every time I get out of the movie. Congrats on your winning lottery ticket. I'd certainly be singing, "Cause I've got the golden ticket!" if I were you. :) Looking forawrd to 11/11.

Tracie, that post was incredible and inspiring. That's such a great story, and I'm confident that you erased any doubt any of us had. I didn't know much about you when the cast was announced, but I was completely blown away by your voice in the trailer. Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story. Can't wait to hear more from you and see you in the movie!

Posted by: Sammi on 06/20/05 at 10:45 PM

Thanks for giving us a little bit about yourself. Your story brought a tear to my eye knowing that someone so wanting (no, needing) to be Joanne will actually get it.

Congrats, Tracie...

... a fellow RENThead.

I'm sitting here playing The Sims on my PS2 and thinking, "You know, I read that Tracie Thoms would post today." Since my Sim is racking up the logic points and would take a while, I figured I'd read your post.

I squeed immediately. IMDb is my favorite place to be and I'm just as determined to be in Rent (and Wicked, actually) as you were. I think we'd get along fine.

I admit I was wary when I heard that you were going to play Joanne (I saw Frenchie Davis play the role in New York this last January and thought for sure that she'd get it), but after reading this I am so unbelievably excited to see you in the role. I actually had to pause my game I was so distracted from it.

I wanted to let you know how excited I am that you're involved in this. I'm not nearly talented enough to get into Julliard, but maybe if I'm lucky my dreams will come true, as well. The best of luck in your future endeavours; I hope we'll be seeing so much more of you.

Hey, will there be an L.A. premiere?

...Can I get tickets?

Hey Tracie!!
Oh my gosh! That was was one of the best posts yet. I got online at lunch in my school after a freako long final, thinking the blog probably wouldn't be updated, and found THIS. Plus the pics!! Your post carried me through the whole day...huge smile, like always...

Every single thing I've heard about you since you got cast has been positive, and man, seeing you in the trailer completely clinched the fact that you're AWESOME. I'm in love with your voice, just like the rest of the cast. Thanks soooo much for posting and telling us about yourself and everything!! Kudos..

Oh My God, Tracie, You are living my life!!!!!!

I am more jealous of you than you will ever know. But you deserve it. I have total faith in you.

Remember this experience. I know you won't forget one moment of it. You. You give me hope. I would DIE to be in RENT someday. And hearing your story, maybe...I will? And I would die TWICE to get to sing with Rapp and Pascal! JESUS! If I was you, I probably WOULD have passed out.

You sound like a really sweet person.

I look forward to seeing you in RENT! Have fun.

Love Always and Forever,

hey Tracie!

Thanx a bunch for letting us get to know you better, who knew you just happened to be a fellow RENThead before even being cast and that it was the reason you auditioned in the first place. AWESOME. I got goosebumps reading the part about Anthony himself singing to you and it wasn't the cd. Man, I can only imagine what that must have been like, must have been pretty surreal, a dream come true! Congratulations on getting the part Tracie, it must be really amazing! Cant wait to see the movie! much love -----Noelle

Dear Tracie,

What an amazing, touching, funny and inspiring post! I had no idea about your magical journey to RENT. Thank you for opening your heart to us! Our heart is now open to you too. It feels like we made a new friend! This Rent Blog provides us all with a "connection in an islolating age". Please post as often as they allow. My previous message to you was deleted:/ I now realize my "Tango" comment may have been misinterpreted. oops. What I meant was - I wish you the very best on your journey and look foward to seeing YOU (and Joanne) on the Big Screen! :-)

Posted by: Michael on 06/21/05 at 02:46 AM

Tracie,
Although, unlike other RENTHEADS, I’ve never had a chance to see the real performance (too far to fly to NY from where I live), but I fell in love with the music first time I heard it.
I did a lot of amateur acting (in English), although it’s not a mother tongue of mine (neither of the audience I played it for). No wonder that when I heard RENT I also thought, I have to be in it one day. And …. the dream came true.
Therefore I’m so glad for you. I will look forward to seeing you in the movie (although I know it’s going to be long, long after 11th November).

Lots of love G.

Tracie,
Wow. . . that is all i can say. your story is really inspring because you never gave up and that is hte reason that out of all of those Joanne's that you got the part. . . and because you have a wicked voice!! I saw rent in 97 also and was a rent head ever since. . (that is saying something because i was 8) i cant wait till the movie and we can see you. from the trailer I know that you are going to do a wicked job!!!
best of luck!

Wow... sounds like my dream come true! You're so lucky that you won the RENThead lottery... you totally deserve it, though. When I heard you singing SOL on the trailer I flipped because you didn't even have trouble hitting those high notes(and jealous because it took me quite a few months to develop my range that high).

And come to think of it, I would freak out whenever Anthony or Adam was singing because they're both incredible.

Glad you're having a blast, and congrats again!

Hey Tracie!
Not sure if you remember me but I am a friend of Delisco's. I used to hang out with his band and I was up there when you guys sang at that shack upstate (Pour Boy's or something?) and a few other venues. I think the last place we saw each other was at The Dark Light and you were doing a production of Antigone. Anyway, you kick so much you-know-what it's ridiculous! You sound amazing on Season's of Love and I am so stokked to see you in this movie. You deserve it! Rock on girl!

Posted by: Jill Knox on 06/21/05 at 09:00 AM

That was one of the best stories I've ever read. Congratulations!!! It shows hard work and determination really pay off, and from hearing you sing/seeing clips of the movie in the trailer, you truely DO deserve this role. We're all very proud of you and can't wait to see the final result!
Thanks for posting and enjoy!

It is nice to meet you too. Thanks for such a long post. You sound sooo amazing in the trailer, I can't wait to see you in all of the movie. Ahh, a fellow RENThead. Congrats.

Posted by: Elise on 06/21/05 at 10:13 AM

you may never read this but i dont care. I am so happy to see you post. Your post really hit me for some reason. i guess because when i discovered rent a year ago it changed my life. I had been interested in music theatre one point in my life but then my voice teacher turned me towards opera. after listening to rent for almost a year before finally flying out to NY for the first time to see it (my first brush with broadway) i was changed forever. Music theatre was all i cared about again. This movie is a dream come true for me. I only hope the stage show still sticks around so i too may at least audition for it. You are a beautiful singer and i can tell a beautiful person from your post. I am glad you joined the cast and I look forward to seeing the movie. Congratulations on finally being a part of rent...people who want it that bad always deserve it. :)
best wishes,
Rachel

From one RENThead to another : You passed the test. Can't wait to see you on the big screen.

I was on the set in Alemeda for the cafe scenes and heard your solo on "Seasons of Love". Everyone was dazed by your performance. You have an amazing voice. If no one knows who the hell you are, they will soon! The formation of a major star is at hand!

God bless you!

Wow Tracie, Thanks so much for sharing your story with us! It was a lot of fun to read. And it's nice, because I'm sure, as a fellow RENTHead, you will bring your own passion and spark to the role, but still keep Jonathan's vision in mind. Can't wait to see you in the role, and I'm very excited for this movie in general. I've waited years to see it finally come to be, and I have all the faith in the world that you and the rest of the cast will fill your roles to the absolute best of your abilities, and allow an entire new generation to experience the moving story of "Rent"

Posted by: Sarah on 06/21/05 at 04:59 PM

That is extremely inspiring, amusing quotes and all. The one thing I got from this, if nothing else, is the wonderful sense of, "she's just like us". Us being the screaming RENT fans who would do anything to have anything to do with it. ^^ Good luck, I can't wait to see you!

I have read the IMDB comments too and I must say, they say some rude things! I have so much confidence in you and Rosario! I was unbelievably touched by your blog! So many people can relate to you as a RENThead and we can all only imagine what it is like to be around the Rent cast and now you will be a part of it! One day, all of us RENTheads will be screaming for you, Tracie! I would now if I ever met you!

I have seen the trailer and you have a wonderful voice! I wish the best of luck for you and all of the cast! Happy filming!

Hey Tracie,

Thanks for such an awesome blog. I have yet to have as much as you to "let things go". I dwell on things a lot, but you did SO many auditions for Rent and finally got the job after at least 4 years...I'm glad you stuck with it, otherwise you wouldn't be here. And thanks for not being so.."I deserve to be here".

Posted by: Jessica on 06/21/05 at 06:26 PM

That is one of the best stories I've ever heard. You rock. Can't wait to see the film-- and hopefully meet you! It would be awesome if after all this you came and did Joanne on Bway. :-)

Breathe in these last days, moments of filming - you are living a legacy and a miracle into existence.

This is a very vivid description of your story, and it's written very well. Add playwright to your list of great talents.

I truly admire you and that C note. It gives me serious chills. God I'm so jealous of you =P!!! You're beautiful, talented, and actually performing a RENT role!! =T I'd give up everything as well to perform on the RENT stage.

I thought I was crazy when I wanted to perform (i'm still in highschool, but i can dream right??) on broadway. 8 shows a week in the exhausting conditions and wishing it were all done before Christmas vacation. But you're crazier balancing TV, school, broadway, etc. God I admire you!!

That's it! You're my new role model ^___^. Even though I can't afford a Juilliard education, but I can try to make it, right? Dreaming's an option too =P

Hey!

That was really interesting to read. Thanks so much for taking the time. That's so cool you just laughed about what those chicks wrote in the forum..."who the hell is she?!" instead of having a fit like some people would have.

YAY!

Posted by: Allen on 06/21/05 at 11:38 PM

Wow. You're the little Renthead that could. That's a really amazing story you've got there. Anthony Rapp has been one of my favorite singers since I was 8 (I'm 14 now), and I think I would faint dead away if I ever sang with him. I hope to see you on Broadway soon—I'd go to anything with you just on the basis of your story. Thanks for giving all of us daydreaming Rentheads hope!

Posted by: Elizabeth on 06/22/05 at 07:47 AM

I saw the trailor in a theater, and was so excited. Of course I was singing along in my head. Just seeing the trailor takes me back and almost brought me to tears!

I know you will be wonderful and the movie will do the play justice. I know everyone here is hopeful that the movie will be better, but in my opinion, nothing can beat the original. Nothing can beat the emotions of being there on Broadway watching this wonderful show come together!

Posted by: Sarah on 06/22/05 at 08:24 AM

I for one knew who you were (at least a little bit) before. I was so excited that you were going to play Joanne. I was a huge "Wonderfalls" fan and hated the way the network ended it. But I have the dvd set so I'm slightly appeased. :) It's good to hear that you're having fun and that you are a RENThead too!

Hey!

You do sound like one awesome Joanne from the trailer, I'm sure you'll be great. I can't wait to see you in the movie, and I know I'll become a big fan of yours, just from hearing your voice on the trailer I could tell that you would make a good Joanne.

Someone earlier posted about the IMDb boards. Thats like my favorite site. Hey, come check it out sometime, its mostly good posts, except for those wackos who bash everything that someone else thinks is good.

Wow- one of the best posts yet! How exciting! It was so wonderful to read your story!! You don't even know what we all are going through... ok, well maybe you do since you were a born RENT-HEAD as well... but seriously, I started counting down at 212 days, and now I'm down to 144 and that's just freaking amazing! Well, that's one hell of a post! You've certainly won me over! I'm jealous as hell now! I've been a RENTHEAD since 1996, but only had that passion for the OBC. But I don't think I'm going to have any trouble accepting you or Rosario into that mix. If they love you, than so do I! Welcome home! We've been waiting for you!

Posted by: Lance on 06/22/05 at 04:50 PM

Wow...i'm violetneverland on imdb.com so I guess we should all watch what we say there, lol! Anyway, I'm very pleased to meet you and might I say, EXCELLENT Seasons of Love solo on the RENT teaser trailer! You might just be the best Joanne so far. A lot of us RENTheads on the IMDB have been pretty worried that a film might ruin the whole franchise, but the teaser just made me more excited to see one of my favorite shows brought to life. As for your dream sequence-esque Tango: Maureen duet with Anthony Rapp, how I wish I was you! That's my absolute favorite number (God, I'm starting to sound like Glinda on drugs with all of the adjectives), ever since I saw it staged last September. With my eternal love of Anthony and my newfound impression of your voice, that'll be the song I hold out for at the *fingers crossed* midnight showing of RENT. Now that I'm rambled and bored the hell out of all the RENT blog visitors, I'll sign off but add a much-cliched ending, "La Vie Boheme!" HA! You probably thought I was going to quote no day but today..Ciao, Tracie!

That's a total dream come true for any Rent freak. I'd love to have done that!

Convo between a friend of mine and me:

Her: So who's all in the rent movie?
Me: The entire OBC cast except for two.
Her: Which two?
Me: Mimi's being played by Rosario Dawson, and Joanne's being played by Tracie Thoms.
Her: Who's Tracie Thoms?
Me: She was in that show Wonderfalls.
Her: What's Wonderfalls.
Me: Only one of the best shows that could have ever been on tv.

This is to Tracie,
I am from Canberra in Australia and i'm so excited about seeing the movie when it comes out over here.
I am in a amateur musical production of RENT at the moment here and am playing the role of Joanne.
It's great to hear about your experience playing the character of Joanne and hopefully I can take on board some of what you had to say. I am so grateful to be playing this role and I'll give it all I've got!!!
NO DAY BUT TODAY!

Posted by: bec on 06/22/05 at 10:00 PM

When I watched the trailer and I saw you I said to my friend that's Mahandra. That's Tracie Thoms. She's Mahandra from Wonderfalls. I love that show, and you were so funny and heart warming in it. I can't wait to see you in Rent. I am an actor and I only hope to one day work with talent such as yourself.

Tracie... THAT IS SO FLIPPENING COOL!!! IT'S LIKE A CINDERELLA STORY, OR A DREAM COME TRUE!!! God I would KILL to be in RENT. Seriously, RENT I think is probably the best musical EVER! And I would start screaming my head off if Anthony Rapp sang Tango Maureen with me, so consider yourself very lucky! I never saw the original broadway cast, but i do have the CD. Considering I've only been obsessed with RENT for a month, you must pardon me, because I got you and the original Joanne (her name has slipped my mind) mixed up and I thought you WERE the original. Guess I was mistaken. But still, I'm sure you're going to do great! I've watched the commerical like FIVE BILLION times and you sing in it and your voice is SO pretty!!!

Cant wait for the movie to come out. I look forward to watching you on the big screen.

~Your newest, yet biggest fan,
Julia

wow Tracie. That's such a wonderful story. Congradulations on the part! After watching the trailer, there is no doubt in my mind about you. You can sing your little butt off! I know that you are going to be amazing as Joanne. You seem like such an amazing person, as well as an amazing actress. Thanks so much for that entry, and I wish you nothing but the best.

Tracie, you are truly inspirational to us all. At first when I heard that they were having some different people play a few parts, I was skeptical. But after reading your blog, I don't think that anyone else deserves it as much as you. As a fellow Renthead that aspires to make it on Broadway, its wonderful to hear your story and how things played out for you. P.S. I don't blame you for going crazy when Adam sang!!! Rent is an AWESOME show and you are the luckiest person in the world to be a part of it. I know you'll make us proud come November. I can't wait!!!! P.S. You get to work with Idina too!?!? - Sooo unfair!!

Wow, no words....

All I can say is I saw the trailer, you looked so happy and you could totally feel your energy in your voice and see it on your face in that solo. I can tell you put your heart and soul into it. It gave me goosebumps! You rock!

As if I wasn't giddy enough about JUST finding out about the movie (I know, HOW did that happen?!) To read your blog just gave me an added high (natural of course) to an already amazing weekend ahead (Toronto Pride! ;) A MUCH belated congrats and thanks for a fantastic bit of insight. As a fanatic, I'm sure you know it's amazing to know that the artist is equally excited about doing the show as the audience is watching it. I've only seen this show ONCE and listened to at least 30, so to have a version I'll eventually be able to throw into my DVD player and watch a million times makes me VEEERY happy! Just think, you'll be making people as happy to see it as it was to make it. ha ha Cheesy I know, but I was always SURE the movie version would STINK. That apparently won't be the case... no pressure. ;) Thanks again Tracie!

Congreats I cant wait to see you in the movie! =)

Posted by: Katy on 06/24/05 at 06:08 AM

Oh my goodness, I feel so ignorant! Honestly, I thought you were part of the OBC, too...your name sounded familiar, but maybe that's because I've been checking the IMDb website for Rent...sorry, guess I'm not so up on my Rent as I thought I was *necktie motion*

It's fantastic that you're doing the show. I loved reading your blog entry; I love it when wonderful things seem to happen "out of the blue". Can't wait to see the movie-- you guys are going to be great! *squeal* Sorry, v. excited to see this. I can't wait till November. D'you think if you speed up production you can get it out by my birthday? *wink* Just kidding...July is a little too soon, I guess...

Have a good weekend!

You have a new fan, captivated by your beautiful voice and charming style. The warmth that "Seasons of Love" inspires in you is a joy to behold. That and the amazing vocal control you've honed in recent years tell me that your arrival as a cast member has come at just the right time.

I'm lucky to have finally discovered you and Rent. I look forward to seeing the movie and listening to the new soundtrack as many times as I've listened to the movie trailer already.

Thank you and all of the cast for inspiring us with your work.

I would have KILLED someone is Beyonce or any other well-known, I'm-in-every-movie-ever-made type got the part. I want to play Joanne so badly, but I'm white, so.... my dreams are crushed. Maybe I could be Maureen =). A very "Rubenesque" Maureen.

Wow, your story gave me chills! What an amazing thing to happen. You are one lucky girl. Can't wait to see the movie!

Tracie, you are awesome. I'm so excited to see you as Joanne and you are SO worthy. That is great and happy your dream was able to come true. HAHA I envy you and Rosario so much because it would have been my dream to even breathe the same air as Anthony or Adam... ew that sounds creepy I'm sorry. But seriously, I'm so excited to see this and you go girl!

Tracie,
Wow, that is such an incredible story! You totally made me laugh-if I ever got to sing with Anthony Rapp, I would almost pass out too :-)
I'm so proud of you-you have a gorgeous voice and I'm sure you're going to be FABULOUS! Best of luck and I can't wait to see you!
PS-Nice high C in the trailer-better than the OBC! :-)

I am more than elated that you got the part as Joanne. You waited a long time for this and your moment, your dream came true. Reading your Blog was inspiring and I'm glad to know who the hell you are and how the hell you got here!

It was your voice that took my breath away while watching the trailer; your presence fits like a glove and your voice is magnificent. I love RENT and cannot wait to see it again.. I believe it will translate to film beautifully.

Bless you and many, many good wishes for a future filled with dreams coming true.

Traci,
Well first-off, congrats on nabbing the role. Believe it or not, I DID know who you were, because I saw you on "The Shield", so just to let you know that there are some of us out there who have heard of you :-) I can guarantee that after RENT opens in theaters, everyone will know your name. The trailer is amazing, and I think it's absolutely FANTASTIC that all of you guys post things on this blog for us humble RENTheads to read :-) Thanks again for the insight and the background, and congrats again!

Wow it seems like you went through quite a journey to come to eventually landing the part in the RENT movie. Congratulations and we're happy that you were honored in the part. I love you in the movie trailer and I am excited for you and us RENTheads are all jealous of you... I hope you had a blast!

Posted by: Joyce on 06/28/05 at 10:02 AM

Tracie if there is a chance you get this. I know who you are! I actually saw you in Athens in THE OEDIPUS PLAYS with The Shakespeare Theatre. I was actually one of the few administrative staff members from the Theatre who was there. An unbelieveable performance, from you and the entire cast! An experience of a lifetime. And just the other day I was in a theatre and saw the full trailer for RENT and was in tears, and so was my friend who had seen the original cast of Rent and The Oedipus Plays..she's thrilled you're in the movie! Can't wait to see the movie! Good luck.

Posted by: Scott on 06/28/05 at 01:21 PM

I was livid when I found out RENT was being made into a movie. I was positive that no movie could do the show justice -- it's the one CD I own that brings me to tears every time. Not the lyrics, but the beauty of the voices, the way certain notes sound. I was positive no Hollywood name could top that. Then I found out that most of the original cast would be starring. So then I worried obsessively about who would fill the remaining roles....

And I'm glad they got you :) As so many others have said, it's really incredible how much you love the show, the utter devotion to NEEDING to be in the show. Now I've heard your voice in the trailer, heard (figuratively) your story, and I'm positive that no one else could do this :) So Happy!

Congrats again!

Thank you for such an incredible blog. You give Rentheads like us hope. Of course, I'm sure we'd all be incredibly star-struck in your place. Hell, I'd scream like a fangirl if Adam or Anthony were singing nearby. ;) Then again, I think you may be near such treatment yourself. Come Nov. 11! Y'alls trailer is amazing...you can really pick out the Rentheads in theaters when the preview comes on...dorks like us belting our hearts out! lol. No day but today!

Hi,
well, i was wondering, sence i'm very familar with the first cast (third person of course ::laughs::) but i must say i was still very excited by your arival. My bestfreind and i skipped lunch to go watch the RENT trailer in our school library and thats where i first saw you. Honestly, you have a lovely voice, so i had no worrys about who you are, cause even if we didn't know you then we know you now right? And besides, the trailer made me cry just watching tinny clips, so that must be satifying for both the preformer and the viewer. Break a leg sister! No Day But Today!

Tracie! That's UNBELIEVABLE! I have had dream after dream that something like that would happen to me, but you almost never hear it happening to people, so I was starting to lose that idea, but not anymore! As soon as I saw it the first time, I was like, "Mimi...I must do everything to become Mimi..." Now, I didn't really. I take regular classes in school and no dance or voice lessons or acting classes. I'm so glad you got the part, your voice is AMAZING! You hit that high note in the trailer and it gives me chills and I start tearing up. You are awesome! You deserve the part (even if I am totally envious, but then again, totally sixteen...and a new sixteen ^_^) I am looking forward to seeing the movie (and the show again sooner or later hehe) I'm so excited, especially for the "Tango: Maureen" scene, you and Anthony dancing looks so awesome and, I'm just so excited. Period. I'm going to stop rambling and leave it at: Congrats, Tracie, you deserve it and you will be amazing! I didn't have any questions with how you got there, because I knew they wouldn't cast anyone terrible!

Posted by: Briana on 07/05/05 at 06:13 AM

I think it's wonderful that you write about yourself and I really belive that you're gonna be the best Joanne. You're an great exemple of perseverance and I can't wait to see you in the movie.

That is such an awesome story!!! I recently saw Rent on stage, and became and insta-fangirl. :D I love the stage, only I can't sing, so I live through my friends who can. :P

After seeing the trailer for the movie, with your solo in 'Season's of Love', I immediately knew you would be an AWESOME Joanne. Joanne is actually one of my favourite characters, and I'm sure you'll play her superbly!!!

- Your lovely fan, Kim!

Posted by: Kim on 07/05/05 at 03:02 PM

you are livin' the dream girl..... of course i would need to be about 6 years older and have a singing voice..... i can't sing and yet i screech out the lyrics to la vie boheme anyway.....^_^ oh well....

Posted by: Mary on 07/05/05 at 06:02 PM

Dear Tracie-
It's a bit (aka REALLY) late, but congratulations on getting to play Joanne. I can tell from the trailer that you're going to be absolutely great, and I can't wait for the movie to come out! And you got the high C! Congratulations- that note's darn near impossible to hit as well as you did. YAY. It's so great to hear that a RENT fan gets to play a major role in the version of the show that people all over will remember. So, congratulations, and I hope you continue acting and singing after RENT is over.

Thank you for everything you told about your story. Everyone knows what it is like to be an actor in NYC and to be called back for a role that you think you are so right for and you to find out that you are not... for whatever reason or get the run around because of a. b. or c... But you seem to be someone who has plowed on and "went on with the show." I don't realy know if I can acknowledge one part of this blog that you posted... but what I can tell you is that you reinforced something in me... that I know many other people feel as an artist trying to do what they want to do or what they feel they need to do, or what they know they are born to do. You gave me a gift with your story. Thank you and GOD bless. I can't wait to see the film. You are a truly wonderful person and it makes me proud to be an actor in an industry where it is so hard for new voices to be heard.
LOVE x10..
your pal,

Tracie,
I was sitting in the movies when the preview came up for RENT and I was like WHOA! I know her. She and I went to High School and College together. I know her. I know her. You are doing amazing things, and I am so proud of you. I don't remember the last time I've seen you...well in person, cause i have seen you on TV and billboards countless times. Well, I hope this finds you in great health and spirits.

Posted by: Michael Snipe Jr on 07/07/05 at 12:54 AM

Going to RENT circa '97 changed my life, too, although probably not as much as it changed yours! ; )
A couple really cool teachers in my high school (in central Iowa) did a New York City trip about every other year. Each year, everybody who went on the trip got to see four shows on Broadway. One of the teachers was extremely excited about RENT the year I talked my parents into letting me go on the trip, so there was no question: that was our top choice when we were voting on shows to see. I think it was probably the one show we all picked unanimously.
There are lots of things about going to New York that seem significant now--like, for instance, the fact that we went in the World Trade Center. And there were lots of things--like buying Haagen-Dasz on Liberty Island--that seemed significant then. But RENT was a really amazing experience, and I loved my friend Ben for having a pen for autographs as we waited for the actors to come outside. I just wish I'd gotten more. . .
You were awesome in Wonderfalls, and I can't wait to see you in RENT.

Now that I've FINALLY seen the trailer (on the big screen, my internet is crap), I have to tell you...YOU KICK ASS!!

My mom was seeing a movie with me and when you did your part, she turned to me and said, "That woman has a beautiful voice."

I am so glad that they changed up the cast a bit, it seems like it would be TOO much like the original, therefore it wouldn't have any dynamics. thank you for spicing up the rent cast. your personality seems superb and so cute!

Yea, I can't wait until the movie comes out! My friends and I decided to go to the midnight showing and dress like our favorite characters.... so of course, here I am... I'm going to go as Maureen. Big suprise there, eh? Well, all my best wishes to you! We, the people, will be sure to make you famous! Oh, and has anyone told you how amazingly gorgeous you are?

Incredible post- after reading, I'm even more thrilled than I was before that you're Joanne (when I first saw the trailer and heard the cast sing I was literally skipping around the room.

If I could listen to Anthony and Adam sing on a daily basis...I'd be screaming like a groupie too, lol.

Congrats on the part.

Glad you're living your dream--that's an inspiration to all of us, regardless of what our dream is. I've watched the preview a million times and your voice is gorgeous, I can't wait to see the film, good luck and congratulations!

Tracie,

Belated congrats!!! I'm so happy for you!

I'm so glad you mentioned Hair in your blog because I've been telling all of my friends that I worked with you on that show at the Studio Theatre in DC. I was the directing intern at the Studio that summer.

I can't wait to see the movie!

Tracie,

Congrats on your success! It was a great surprise to be wathing a clip on the Today Show and see you! You had this sparkle in your eyes about musical theatre since our days at HU and now you're in film! I'm happy that you've MADE it and to say that I once sang with THE Tracie Thoms in a small group called.... "Mahogany" in school! :O)

Best of luck and I'll be sure to see the film now!

Tracie,

I just checked you and the cast out on The Today Show, and you have a stunning voice. I never saw the musical on Broadway, so I look forward to seeing the film with the original cast for the most part intact. Rosario Dawson is a personal favorite of mine, and I think you just put yourself on the map. Congratulations and good luck!

Posted by: Timothy on 08/04/05 at 07:27 AM

Wow.. you were a classmate of Jeffrey Carlson... & now you both are emerging as breakthrough stars.. how unbelievably amazing. You give my dreams of being on Broadway one day so much hope. I've been working my ass off to get there.. & you've shown me that these things have a way of working out for you. Thank you.

Hey Tracie, one of your new fans here. I've heard you in "Seasons of Love" "Tango: Maureen" and "Take me or Leave me" and I have only two words for it:Incrediblby amazing! Chris Columbus is right; Aretha had better watch her back, cuz you may give her a run for her money. You totally deserved to be Joanne. Anyway, lots of luck and love from Jazzy M

Posted by: Jazzy M on 08/24/05 at 06:49 AM

By the way Tracie, did I mention you're living every RENThead's dream? But I just can't be jealous because you deserve it. Besides, I'm way too young. I mean, back when RENT started, I had just turned 5 for heaven's sake. Anyway, thanks a lot for the background info. It's great to finally find out who you are. Anyway, lots of love and say hi to Rosario and everyone else for me.

Posted by: angie on 08/28/05 at 12:51 PM

that's an awesome story. i saw the show this past week (for the 3rd time, haha) and had a similar response to yours. i dont have the voice for Rent (or anythign really, haha) but i turned to my friend and went "my goal is to, one day, be on this stage, or at least backstage. i dont necessarily want to be up there singing, but i want to be a part of it, anyway i can." the show is incredible and the movie looks amazing, from the song clips i heard you sound AWESOME. cant wait for the movie :)

Posted by: Katie on 08/28/05 at 08:52 PM

hey, i just found this site like, a few days ago and i see your name on the character post bar and im like OMG! SHE WAS ON WONDERFALLS!!!! aw man, me and my brother LOVED that show!!! we were so pissed when it got canceled. i saw you on the rent trailer and i cant wait to see the movie! i watched the bryant park and the today show clips too and i thought you were brilliant! like katie, i want to be a part of anything theatercal, even if it's just running around for people's cappacinos, ANYTHING! i'm so glad for you that you got the part, sorry if it's a little (a lot) bit late. joanne is my favorite character, even before i knew you were playing her. i cant wait for the movie! ^-^

Tracie:
All I can say is CONGRATS!!!!!!!
I was like you when I was living in NYC. I was attending an acting school, all I could think about was being in RENT. I never had the guts to drop off a headshot and resume at the casting office. Before I went to NYC that's all I could think about, all I ever said, "when I go to New York, I'm going by the casting office for RENT and dropping my stuff off there. I have to be Mark." Obviously that never happened. I have seen RENT twice on Broadway, and I was always amazed by the cast. Reading your enrty made me smile. That is so cool, that you would stop at nothing to play your dream role. AWESOME. and I can't imagine what it must have been like to be there with Anthony as he's singing Tango Maureen, I sing along with that all the time, I would have totally flipped. :)
Anyway I can't wait to see this movie. Congrats again, and I wish you all the luck in the world. :)

Posted by: Andy on 09/08/05 at 02:43 PM

Congratulations on this role!! You deserve it. I watched your video entries and it totally seems like you have all the spunk and spice it takes to carry Joanne and more! I can't imagine how it feels to love a show for so long and one day get a phone call that allows you to be placed perfectly into the world of that show. Even BETTER, this is going to be encapsulated forever. A permanent moment in time that people can always look back on. Even though I'm not familiar with your work, I can say that I'm glad they chose you. With a piece like Rent, the material needs a strong place in your heart. If you have that, you can carry it a lot better than some big name. Can't wait to see the film! Congrats again!!

Tracie! CONGRADULATIONS!
I must say you are living my dream! I'm a newly born RENTHEAD. I saw RENT last year for the first time through Broadway Across America. It was my first broadway show and I loved it!! After I saw the play I swore I would be in the movie version should one ever be made...fast foward a year later and you guys are filming in my hometown of Santa Fe! I almost died when I heard and really almost did die trying to drive downtown to catch the last of the filming. Needless to say I missed it. I saw the trailer a while later and almost pee'd my pants! Not that you need to know all these fun facts about me! :o) All in All I just wanted to say:
I can't wait to see the movie and I'm glad at least one renthead had their dream come true! Congrats!

Posted by: Shawna on 09/23/05 at 12:08 AM

YOU ARE AMAZING!! I'm so glad they picked you for Joanne! Take Me or Leave Me is so amazing I love what you did with it!! I saw you at Bryant Park and that was amazing too!!! See you on the big screen in two months!!!

Tracie...
Oh My God! It's me...Laura Jones...from Baltimore! I can't believe it...I've been keeping up with what you've been up to off and on. I first started seeing you on commercials, then on the UPN show, then on Wonderfalls...and now this! I am sooo proud of you!! I've already told my friends at work to go see the movie RENT when it comes out because "my best friend from middle school is in it, and she is awesome!"

I have so many silly memories of us from...how many years ago? ... 18! Oh my gosh, are we really that old? Remember, the Monkees, sleep overs and crazy flips over the couch in your basement (with Chablis in the way), Lethal Weapon, talking on the phone until all hours of the night, singing "I've Gotta Crow" in the Subrook bathroom, Lethal Weapon 2, and do you still remember "The Medley?" I'm sure you do...you always had a freaky sense of memory.

Anyway, I wanted to drop a line and say hi! I know it's been forever since we last talked. I'd love to hear from you and catch up. Congratulations again on all of your successes. I will definitely be at the theater when the movie opens cheering for you girl!!

Helloooo Pookie! ^_^

Omigosh, you rock and I love you and you are going to be like the best Joanne ever! I have to admit, as soon as I saw the trailer, I was like "I like her better than old Joanne!" I thought they might cast Queen Latifah as Joanne too, lol! I probably would have swooned if Anthony Rapp had walked into the room...and began singing with me or not...*drools* He's soooo hott...^_^ But hooray you're a fan too! Anyways, I can't wait to see you in the movie! Go RENT! No day but today!

le gra go deo,
Eponine

PS- I was just watching the trailer for the, what, 78th time(or something like that) and I noticed that in the part where Maureen and Joanne kiss, Mark's kinda standing to the side looking sad about it..poor Marky, losing his girlfriend to Joanne...ah well! "There are other fishies in the sea" as his Mum says...*COUGHgooutwithmemarkCOUGH*

I just wanted to say that we (the RENTheads) are more than happy to invite you into our world as Joanne, rather than just another one of us. Being a performer myself (or pretending to be, anyway), I can't imagine what it would be like to get a role you had auditioned for that much and loved that much. Amazing. Well, I guess I just wanted to say that and congratulations, and I look forward to seeing you on the screen!

Wow I've seen that trailer, and (not that that's something new over here..) I can't wait- All I can do is go like 'eek! eek!' inside all day, and I don't think the movie's even gonna be here untill January or something (I live in the Netherlands.. god I hate that :) )..
You're my proof that amazing things do happen to good people, and you've just refilled my hope-meter :p..!
Thank you so much for doing this all (your blog is amazing.. is there anything you can't do? my god you should write..!), and I am DYING to see you all on the movie. When it comes out. *sigh..

Let me start with: some people out there already knew who you were and knew you would be on your way to great things. One word: "Wonderfalls." Girl, you STOLE that show.

I was super excited to see you were playing "Joanne" - so much so that the movie theater people still look at me oddly for pointing at the RENT poster and shouting "Mahandra!"

I was a Rent-head before, but now? Now nothing's keeping me from seeing it opening night!

I've heard some of the music and seen the trailer - dude, you own "Joanne." Congratulations and I look forward to hearing/seeing more from you.

First of all...you are amazing, down to earth, real and so powerful!!! I can not wait until the 23rd!!! I'm so excited I'm jumping out of my skin!!
About 5 years ago I saw Rent for the first time (remeber with Joey Fatone) and I left there saying "wow, someone really needs to make a movie...this is just too important (the message, the singing, topics that most people won't touch!!) and the people who can't make it to see it on stage are missing out!!! I mean nothing beats live, real live singing infront of your face but this movie is just what this world need!! yeah!!! thank you!!!

Jeez- ever consideredm writing a book? That was so engrossing I was upset when it ended. Amazing to hear a fellow RentHead's dreams come true. I hope you realize that you're creating a whole new set of dreams for a whole new set of Rent-ers. Get ready.

congrats, you were AMAZING! from one real dyke to one acting as one: you and idina were believeable. kudos to you for bagging her for the film - shes a hottie!

im a Maryland native as well - i love that a Baltimore girl is in this film. It makes me feel...happy to be from MD (and this place isnt that great for a homo girl)

RENT has touched me more than you know. i just read in the Baltimore Sun about you: i wish i had your dad - he sounds awesome. and that high C is amazing, i love your voice.

i should probably shut up since you probably wont read this anyway - your a big movie star now!

Saw the movie last night. YOU were the BEST!

Posted by: Michreese on 11/26/05 at 11:07 AM

okay... first off, I just want to say that I was bawling my eyes out by the time I finished reading this entry. It's very inspiring...
And Tracie- as a RENThead, let me say that you are truly amazing... I have been to see Rent 3 times already-- and was VERY upset yesterday, because it was the only say that I couldn't make it to the show. I was stuck in a theatre for 14 hours of my day playing Mrs. Cratchit. But, I had the movie soundtrack with me... and I listened to it over & over again between scenes & the whole way through intermission. I stayed in my dressing room almost the whole time I was there, leaving maybe two or three times to mingle in the greenroom and use the bathroom. But, my point is, that I am in love with you voice, Tracie.. you are absolutely PHENOMINAL. And, I can honestly say, that in my opinion, you were the BEST JoAnne I've seen... And I saw Fredi and Merle Dandrige at the Nederlander... But you topped them. It was wonderful seeing a new, different side to JoAnne that isn't shown in the stage version.
Also- I don't know if everyone feels this way- but when I go to see a show in NY-- or in any theatre for that matter, there is always one person onstage who steals my attention everytime they are in the lights... That's never happened to me in a movie until I saw Rent. I could not stop watching you.. Your expressions, the little subtle movements that you made-- everything was just so perfect. You are an amazing actress.. And a true inspiration. I look forward to seeing you onstage and onscreen many MANY more times in the future. You can be sure I will OWN every movie that you speak a SINGLE line in. :)

Love always -- Your Fellow RENThead -

Katie

I'm glad you got here because you killed(in the good way) that high note in seasons of love it was great. The whole cast made this movie really great, but you and Idina tore it up. Now "Take me baby" is my favorite song. Congrats!

Ive seen the show alot and everytime ive always thought that Joanne would be a wonderful part to play.. and you, you finally made me leave saying that was amazing. Thats a wonderful part.

Hey, just between you and me, you are my favorite! Yes, I love you!! Hope to see you more, I'm a big fan of yours now!! The soundtrack is now playing in my house 24hrs. Thank you for giving me this wonderful expirience of Rent. It's so great that you showed up(sounds weird but, yeah)! Thank you for let me know you!

OMG, Tracie--
I think you are the hottest woman alive. Ask my girlfriend.. she gets jealous sometimes!!! I have so many pictures of you that I have printed from online.. OMG, I cannot believe that this is really your blog!!! WOW!

Well, RENT came out last Wednesday here, and I have seen it 5 times. And I am going again tonight! It is amazing!!! My ringtone on my cell is "Seasons of Love" I bought the CD, my background song for my MYSPACE is "Take me or Leave me" which happens to be mine and my girlfriends favorite song! I fell in love with you before I ever saw the movie, I watched WonderFalls, and thought you were hott, then I saw your perfomance on the Today Show... I was hooked! Then the movie came out:: You guys have no idea what this movie means to me. Especially one part at the "LifeSupport" when they sing, "
Will I lose my dignity
will someone care
will i wake tomorrow
from this nightmare"
That means a lot to me, because since I have come out, my parents have dis-owned me, and every person that I thought was my friend, turned their backs on me.. it sucks, but you guys make life so much better!!!

OMG, IF YOU ARE EVER IN GEORGIA, PLEASE POST OR E-MAIL, I would love to meet you! You are a true inspirtation to a high school kid! Ps, are you a lesbian, or just playing the part?
LOVE ALWAYS,
CAROL W.

Thank you so much for what you've given us.

I don't know if you read these anymore, but I've totally fallen in love with you. Not in some freako you're a crazy freekaleek type of way, but in you're the most adorable thing ever and just reading your blogs let alone watching them honestly makes me so happy. It also makes me love the movie 12x more. I saw it twice last week and plan to see it again this weekend (nothing compared to the RENTheads here, but being that I'd barely even heard of it before some random commercial only a few months ago, meh). You're hands down my favorite cast member (plz, Anthony Rapp is close second, though) & reading/watching your blogs makes me ridiculously happy. Also- Take Me Or Leave Me is defo my favorite song & my jaw starts to hurt just from singing along when I'm alone at home- how the hell do you do it?! Anyway, I can't wait to see you in more, soon. <333

I walked into the theater to see RENT on Thanksgiving evening, not quite sure what to expect. I wasn't familiar with the show at all, although a couple of my friends were obsessed, and I was looking forward to a new experiance.

I was not dissappointed in the slightest.

Your performance really stood out to me, though, and I left with Joanne easily being my favourite character. You just... you made her so loveable, it was amazing (and really, I was hoping for the girl to just say "screw you, Maureen!" and hook up with Mark). And then I read this... and it only makes me love you more. I can only imagine how amazing of an experiance this was for you, and you really took it in stride. I know that if I got an opportunity like this, I probably wouldn't have been able to think straight, not to mention being able to pull it together and do such an amazing job. I hope you do get to play the role on Broadway (because goodness knows you'll probably have no problems getting cast now!), because I would LOVE to see you in the role in person. You just... wow.

I wish you the best, and congratulations again on your good fortune! :D

Tracie you were absolutely amazing in the role of Joanne. Just everything about the character was perfect. I love reading your blogs....they make me laugh and just seem really real and heartfelt. Thanks for making me smile.

We all know how you got here, it's because you are awesome. You did a great job and I absolutely love the movie. When Joanne and Maureen sing "Take Me for What I Am" I get chills every single time I watch it. How did you feel acting and singing with the same cast you saw back on Broadway?

Posted by: Molly on 12/03/05 at 02:47 PM

Tracie...you are amazing...I cannot get enough of RENT...and I couldn't see anyone else playing Joanne..."Take me or leave me" is amazing, and I can't tell you how awesome it is watching you on screen. I hadn't seen RENT on stage before seeing the film, but the film has really honestly changed the way I look at life...you are amazing on screen...you can feel how happy you are to be a part of this and how in love with this story you are...It's truly moving to watch and experience, and even more knowing your story..thank you for sharing that with us and thank you so much for being a part of something that has truly changed my life and help me know and accept who I am is more than just OK...I love you guys...you are all an incredible inspiration...I hope one day I can thank you all in person...good luck in all you do

Hey!
Your performance in Rent was absolutely AMAZING! I loved the movie so much! My life is musical theatre, it is actually what I am dreaming of doing with my life. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for me. I am going crazy with all the music, voacal training, dance, training, drama, and community shows I am invloved in now, but I love every minute of it. IM jut about to finish highschool, and IM trying to figure out if I should try to go to university/college for theatre, or just go out and do it. I live in Canada, so my best choice for a Canadian school is Sheraton. I don't know if you've heard of it. Anyways, I just wanted to congratulate you and ask. I love every moment I am on stage and have always felt that this is something I just have to do. THX!

Hello Tracie (if you are reading this) I am a 14 year ol girl from NYC. You were phenomenal. The first night I saw RENT, I became addicted. To the music, to everything. Tracie, you are incredible so down to earth. I have a feeling that you are going to have an AMAZING career. I love doing musical theater and you have been an inspiration. It would be SOOOO coool to meet you! (that must sound soo odd but you are rally cool!)

Hey dear.
I had to come back and read & watch everything you did, again. and again. and again. you're actually the most amazing person, ever. don't deny it. <33 And you are my inspiration believe it or not. I really hope you still check this stuff because I'm going to keep writing. Uhh if only you were still doing the blogs. My whole life is like, gone now. What to do without them. I'll tell you I'm 110% behind you when you talked about your surprise the blogs were over, FOR NOW, hopefully. And Ill tell you that you & Idina were looking quite beautiful as usual. I hope to one day be able to be up on the stage like you have been, and then be on the stage, WITH YOU! You've inspired me to become what I've never thought I could ever achieve Tracie, and I want to say thankyou, not for this. But for everything. I do believe you went to Juliard with my cousin, and she always used to say there was this amazing girl named Tracie and she can sing her heart out like no other.
Very cute <33

Hey Tracie,

Oh my gosh!!! You are like my idol right now! I love you, and you were fantastic in RENT. I've never seen the play but the movie was amazing. You were totally believable as Joanne and your voice knocks me out. You are an amazing actress and singer and there is much more to come. Keep up the good work. This now goes on my list of great musicals and part of that is because of you and your voice. You may have been the underdog when you went in for the first time but you showed that you really were Joanne and you are simply amazing. This goes for the cast as well, simply amazing. Hope to hear about you in the future. You are such a beautiful person, inside and out.

Much love,

Marrenda

P.S. Love the hair, please keep it natural.Oh, never lose that enthusiasm, i love that you are so down to earth and funny.

Tracie,

Just wanted you to know I think you did an amazing job. You seem like a really genuine and talented person. Good luck in all that you do. I hope you get a thousand "Joanne" rolls. By your generous, authenic perspective in an industry so full of things taken for granted; I just hope that you get the roles that you rightly deserve in the future. Thanks for giving me hope in a place that can be commonly seen as cruel.

Such an insipration for a nobody like me to become their life long dream. The whole cast has to come to Toronto. Everyone is dying to see you especially us teens, my birthday is today turning 13 at last and my one wish was that i could meet just one of you! Please!

I have been following the cast since day one, and I've missed some entries so I decided to go back and read them, today...the day after I saw RENT, live, at a local theatre where I live. I am amazed with your performances, you are soo incredible. I'm so happy that you got the part! I love RENT!

Posted by: Lara on 02/26/06 at 08:58 AM

I love you, Tracie! I think you did a wonderful job in Rent. It is because of your performance that I bought Wonderfalls (which you blew me away in...really funny). I want to congradulate you on your success ...and please continue singing for us!

You rock so hard it hurts. :-D

I'm constantly struck at how wonderfully humble you are! And fun, too! You make me laugh SOOOOOOOOOO hard. This entry was phenomenal, I'll have you know! You're amazing, Tracie!

My question is... where have you been hiding all this time? You're meant for this, really.

You are so amazing to me that I couldn't even spell correctly in my last comment. I thought I would add that you truly seem to be a good person. You have put yourself out there and are embraced by millions of people.

I wanted to wish you many more blessings in your life.

I don't even know where to begin; I have watched the Movie non-stop since Sunday the 12th of March 2006. I LOVE the entire Movie Cast (I will see the Broadway musical soon).

Tracie - You have the most unbelievable voice. I am a huge fan please keep up the amazing work. I wish I could sing like you and think most of us do. I am forever a Fan 8-). You make me want to go into musical theater, the passion you have for music is what I eat, breath, sleep, live it is the core of my very being. I hope some day to see you perform live and get the full experience.

Idnia - I am so glad you had the chance to act with your husband Taye, you to have wonderful chemistry. I have wanted to see you since you appeared in Wicked (I never had the pleasure); your voice is another one that makes me want to be in musical theater. Your voice and Tracie’s' voice lifts my spirit. I love the Take me or Leave me. You too have great harmony. The uniqueness to your voice takes me away.

Rosario - I had no idea that you could sing, YOU GO GIRL. I am a native New Yorker, and I was amazed. You absolutely fit with this cast. I agree with you, how did you make it so long and never did the show. You belonged with this group. Keep up the singing. I have always been a fan of yours and I will continue. I hope you get to go on Broadway; the Great White Way is calling you. 8-)

There is NO DAY BUT TODAY!

Wilson – You are what can I say I have no words to describe your ability. You moved me to Tears.

Taye – You are very talented I have loved you since the best man. I am in love with your musical ability and your charisma on and off screen. Please don’t abandon Broadway; I would love to see you in action.

Jesse – You where my biggest surprise I had no idea you could sing. I have only known you from L & O. I am extremely impressed with your ability. You and Wilson have on screen chemistry that fits perfectly. Your voice is so smooth and silky; I hope you cut a CD soon.

Adam & Anthony – I apologize for writhing about you two together, however I am not the familiar with you alls work until this movie. I will keep my eye on you two from now on; I am now a fan of you both. Adam you probably get this a lot, my mom and I both feel your voice reminds us of Ted Neeley (from Jesus Christ Superstar), with your own flare. Adam you are very talented, please keep the projects coming.

To you all I am please that you have this opportunity to grace the screen. Please don’t abandon us your FANS. We will always be there for you no matter what. You all ROCKED. Thanks for letting me share my feelings about your beautiful work of ART.
