My First "Official" Blog Entry by Anthony Rapp (Mark Cohen)
So we've been working on the film now for a few months. We started rehearsals back in November here in San Francisco, out on Treasure Island, which has an incredible view of the city back across the water. Rehearsals mostly consisted of building the dance numbers, or more specifically trying to figure out the best amount and kind of dance that should be in the film. It turned out that at least for me, the most elaborate dance number is for Tango: Maureen, appropriately enough, so most of my rehearsals were for that. In the film, our tango will be much more complicated and drawn from authentic tango moves than the one from the show, which has been a lot of fun for Tracie Thoms, who plays Joanne, and myself. There will also be a nice surprise element to the number, which I won't reveal here, cause hey, that will ruin the surprise, won't it? We also spent a fair amount of time in rehearsals going over the music with Tim Weil, who was our original musical director as well. It was great to have him around for this process, since we've all had an amazing connection with him for the first day of Off-Broadway rehearsals over nine years ago. (Nine years! It's still kind of hard to believe!) And in January we spent a few weeks recording the music, because when we film each song, we are lip-synching to a prerecorded track. Although calling it lip-synching is a bit of a misnomer, since we're still actually singing while the cameras are rolling; it's important for our bodies and throats and faces to have evidence of the effort involved in singing, or we'd look like empty puppets or something. Anyway, we are all so thrilled with the results of the recording sessions, which were produced by Green Day's producer, Rob Cavallo. The film's soundtrack will be much more authentically rock and roll in the rock songs, be more lush and beautiful in the ballads, and overall will have a much richer sonic landscape than the previous recording we did. I really think Jonathan would be especially thrilled with the results. |

Hey Anthony! Good to "hear" from you again, so to speak. I don't know what to say other than that I still sometimes remain in disbelief that it's actually happening, even after those incredible hours on the New York set. I hope you're having the time of your life out there, and wish you, with all of my heart, the best of luck as you continue on. Let the journey begin...

Hey, Anthony.
It's really great that this site's finally up and that you can post here. I tried to get ahold of you while you were still on the broadwayworld boards, but I posted just after you said you wouldn't be allowed to.
I can't wait to see you in the movie. Several of my friends had the privelage to see you onstage and have taken delight in dangling that over my head.
Best of luck to you in the future! Keep us updated!

Hey, Anthony.
I just missed being able to talk to you on BWW--I posted just after you were asked to stop putting updates there. Ah, well.
It was a genuine thrill for me to hear you were going to be in the movie. I fell in love with your voice on the recording and I'm working on getting your solo CD. A few friends of mine even had the pleasure of seeing you onstage, a fact that they gladly hold over my head.
Best of luck to you! Keep us updated!

Its so great to hear that all of you are as excited as us about the film- it reassures any doubts we might have and quite frankly makes me even MORE excited. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Tango:Maureen scene. *squees*
Side Note- I sent you a BWW PM the other day, I had a question in it regarding this research project I'm doing... I wanted to have at least one "interview" and you were the person I thought of, because you have experience in that subject...

Yay for "official" blog entries! Great to hear from you again. Like everyone's said, we'll miss you over at BWW, but this is just as good.
Thanks so much for keeping us updated through those first few months of nervous panic, you definitely reassured me that this movie will be just as awesome as the stage show I've loved for years.

Hiya, Anthony,
It's great to hear from you, first, and I can't wait to know more.
I know the movie's going to be great from how everyone talks about it, but what excites me the most is your comment on the overall sound of the music. I love the OBCR, but if you can make that sound fuller, richer... Eee~ I can't wait to see it done!

I'm such a big fan of rent and pretty soon I'm gonna have to buy the obcr again cause it's starting to skip lol, I've only had it for about 4 years. Congratulations to you and the entire cast of RENT. This is a dream come true for all RENT fans. I have been a follower for years and see the show in NYC at least once a year. It is such a poignant piece of musical theatre history with roots that go much deeper than the stage. I can't wait to see this film...Godspeed to you and the entire cast and crew.

Hey Anthony. I have to admit I was a little nervous seeing my absolute favorite musical turned into a movie. However, if you say it's going to be good, I believe you, as you have always been, to me at least, the offical voice of the production. I enjoyed meeting you while on your tour of Little Shop, and I can't wait to "see" you again.

Anthony, I've never posted before, and I just wanted to say that as a young male involved in theatre you have no idea how easing it is to watch actual COOL guys like you and Adam Pascal make magic on the stage... it's extremely reassuring in a field that so often leaves room for so much self doubt. You guys are real people living the dream... Thanks for the inspiration.

What else is there to say? I caught myself not breathing when I first saw your post! November cannot come soon enough, but your words reassure me that it will be worth the wait. I have also already started organizing a group to see the first showing of the movie in my town and am hoping to convince them of a midnite showing (we should all do so!). Again, thank you for giving us such a gift. You are such a rare breed of person and I hold the utmost respect for you. Well, hope to hear from you soon!

Tango Maureen was the first song I listened to when I bought the soundtrack. (I love the Tango) I had no idea what RENT was about and as you can imagine was bit confused.
I have grown to love Rent as I learned more about it (bought the extended version woohoo!) and I was overjoyed to find out you were playing Mark in the movie. What's it like working with everyone again? (*mourns the loss of the original Mimi and Joanne*) Was it hard to get back into the character of Mark Cohen? Hope you have fun doing the movie. Take care, God bless ~Lindsey C. ~

I am so excited for this movie! At first I was skeptical about Rent becoming a movie, but because so many people involved in the original production believe in this, now I can't wait and will be in line opening night! And btw- LOVED you in Adventures in Babysitting!

Even though I only read on BWW - I do miss seeing you around there - glad you are doing this - your involvement with RENT fans has always meant a lot to us and you are now a great deal of inspiration to my acting students. Best wishes to you and everyone else on the project - we can't wait to see it!

suprise element?
hmmm... my guess is:
it will flash to an actual ballroom... with Anthony and Tracie in tux and dress... during the little "its hard to do this backwards" sequence.
that would be a nice element to diverse the movie from the broadway production...

Anthony...
Only been with you and the rest of the OBC since Nov of 2000, but I can say that I honestly think that these haev been the best years of my life. Glad that so many of the OBC decided to stay true to Jonathan and do the movie version- so many of us were nervous about it enough, and we wouldnt want ANYONE else but you guys doing the movie!
Thank you for the many years of RENT love... saw you in Pittsburgh in Hedwig and in Adam's show... we loved it! Thanks!

Greetings Anthony,
Thank you for your first official blog entry on this movie website. I haven't seen this musical but I've heard of it.
We missed you on BWW please come back to us soon.
Anyway I hope the shooting goes so well and you look terrific in your role as Mark Cohen.
I heard that you have been interacting with many folks on the internet and I can't believe that you have a computer or a laptop at home or with you.
I have a question for you which is with your busy schedule are you able to spend much time at home?
Recently my brother Tamu and my guardian Fiona watched 'Adventures in Babysitting' on DVD and they said it was very funny indeed. And as you know I've been very lucky to see this film twice this year but before that I've watched it several times. And it was still a funny film of the 1980's but your performance as Brad's best friend Darryl Coopersmith is still dazzling.
It's been nice to have you back online and I'll keep you posted each week.
Your friend,
Lwazi Nkiwane

First off, *running leap into your arms* WhiteboySpice, you live! You haven't posted on the broadwayworld board in so long, I was worried. Just because this is set up doesn't mean you have to go around neglecting us poor fangirls/boys who like to ask you things that have nothing to do with RENT on that board. *first pretends to sob, then smiles to show she means the above words in jest and is no wat being mean to you* This must mean you're really busy, which is great. Tiring, I'm sure, but really great. It means so much to us RENTheads that it's the OBC in the movie and not some hot-flavor-of-the-month actor. *gets impatient* I wanna see trailers and pics and interviews, and why does November have to be so far away?
Love

Greetings Anthony, I'm a HUGE fan of your's, have been for years now. As a matter of fact, I'm listening to your album as we speak, not the RENT album...YOUR album! Being Mark Cohen in RENT has been a dream of mine ever since I first saw you onstage in NYC many years ago. You truly are an inspiration to all of us RENT fans and I applaud you for being so down to earth and in touch with your fans. Not many "big time" actors do that and it's extremely refreshing that you do this kinda stuff on such a frequent basis. Anyway, I hear rumors almost daily online of the RENT trailer hitting theatres sometime this month...any truth to that? I don't know how or if you can even answer my question seeing as how you made this 1 entry and haven't been back since. But if you have some way of letting everyone know what's up and if the movie is still scheduled to be released in November...please do! Thanks again for being an awesome guy and take care, I can't wait to see you on the big screen starring in RENT someday very soon!

I know that the movie will be wonderful, and I'm so glad that there are so many OBC members in it, it wouldn't be the same without y'all ("can't take the hicksville out of the girl"). I am beyond exstatic to see this movie and I already have started to get a group of people (non-theatre lovin' people) to go see it because I know that it will change them just like the show changed me. Anthony,
I know you probably hear this all the time but I'm a really huge fan! I don't mean to gush or anything but I absolutlely loved you in "You're a good man, Charlie Brown". I never got to see it but the soundtrack alone is amazing. Honestly, and I'm not just saying this, but that soundtrack totally turned me onto music theater. I was sorta "okay" with music theater and musicals but after listening to the YAGMCB soundtrack like 50 times, I was totally hooked. LOL. I'm actually listening to it right now! I'm really looking forward to seeing you in the movie! I think it's really amazing that you take the time to keep the fans informed. I really appreiciate it. It's really cool to hear from the perspective of the actor. How is it working with Idina Menzel? She was amazing in "Wicked" (I didn't get to see that either, :( I never get to see anything!) I'm hoping that my friend Chris (he's the one that told me about YAGMCB along with about 50 other musicals that I should check out) will take me to see one soon. I really want to see a musical to comeplete my "musical" experience. Well, I just came by to show my appreciation and admiration.
-Crystal
PS: You were so cute as Charlie Brown!

I had been keeping up with your posts on BWW, and never registerd...then you had to quit updateing. I have been watching and waiting for this site to come up. I am a huge fan of the show, and of the OBC Recording...not a day goes by that I dont at least think of a line from rent, if not start randomly singing songs from the show. I am completely in awe that this great movement will be a movie! Dont know if you will be answering questions again, or if you will be allowed too...but do you know when we can expect a Trailer or the Movie soundtrack, i understand if you arent able to tell us yet...We will just have to wait in antisipation (i cant spell, sorry)

Hey Anthony!!!
So glad you're keeping in touch with the RENT fans once again! I read about all the ways you used to communicate with them in the original run, that is very cool.
I'm so glad its you playing Mark!! You of all the OBC are the one I would have had the hardest time without in the film. You ARE Mark to me, accept no substitutions ;)
Been a fan of RENT from almost the beginning, so I am very excited so many of the originals are back.
I've also been a fan of yours in all your movies, ever since I was 4 when I saw you in Adventures in Babysitting.
In fact it was you who first sparked an interest in RENT for me, of course then I fell in love with everything about it.
anyway so excited that you are in this project, and thanks for thinking of us fans ;)
Looking very forward to opening day!

Hey Anthony,
I just wanted to say thanks for taking time out to write a little to your fans. I just wanted to tell you that you seriously are a very good actor. I was wondering if you liked to be in musicals better or do you like to foccus on straight acting more.
Posted by: Chris Candage on 05/15/05 at 05:49 PM
Hi Anthony!
I have to admit I had not heard the Rent soundtrack before late last year. Someone was playing "Rent" at a cast party and I heard your voice and I yelled "Oh My God! It's Charlie Brown!" I was then told that it was actaully Anthony Rapp playing '"the greatest role from the greatest musical in decades!" So, since then I've learned that you are much more than Charlie Brown!
It's really nice to hear that you check out the internet to see the fan reaction and after reading all 77 (!) comments I can assure you we're all happy that you're going to be Mark in the film and we're all eagerly anticipating the release! Have fun filming!

Wilson oh my god hi! I just wanted to tell you how madly in love with you I am. I'm fifteen and you are my absolute hero. I think you are brilliant and amazing and bloody drop dead gorgeous. I bought the whole first season of Law and Order SVU just to see you in Nocturne. I love you so much good luck with absolutely everything

Hey, Anthony! I have to say, when I first heard they were going to make a film version of RENT, I was a bit apprehensive. But when I learned that almost all of the original cast was going to be in it, I started to feel a little better. Your blog, along with that of Julie Larson and WJH, really put my mind at ease. I'm now anticipating and anxiously awaiting the arrival of what I hope to be the best movie musical ever! You guys are awesome! BREAK A LEG!!!!! :-* ~Allison

Hey Anthony,
I've been in love with RENT since I was 7 years old. Yep, back in good old 1996 I was a mere 7 years old. Now I'm 16 and RENT means more to me than any other musical ever will. My mom bought the CD on a whim and I thank her everyday for it. I want to send out a huge thanks to you and the rest of the cast for doing the movie.

Hi Anthony,
It's so great to see the OBC (well, minus Daphne and Fredi) back together again. Many of the fans never had a chance to see the performances behind the wonderful CD, so this is a dream come true. I saw RENT this past September in New York, and I was amazed by the energy and vitality to the show. I had already been listening to the CD for about a year, but seeing RENT live really brought it home for me. Anyway, Mark is my favorite character and I really appreciate your internet posts, since I'm in NC and it's a little far to walk for me to see filming. I can't wait for November 11th and I'll be happy to see Idina again (she was AMAZING in Wicked).

This movie is going to be amazing even if it is only a fraction of what the broadway stage musical was. I cannot even express my excitment in seeing this with the original cast...."AHHHHH OMG"----that pretty much sums it up. Goodluck with the rest of production

Greetings!
I'm 16 and very much so into musical theatre. Rent was introduced to me when i was 11 which, yes, maybe too early, but the love for the script just grew exponentially with the years. Now that I drive, the soundtrack was the first thing in my car. I think it's so neat that this is happening, and when I heard that they were using the original cast, i was t.h.r.i.l.l.e.d. You are all so talented, and I especially wanted you to know that I thank you so much for the emotion you have given to this play. "Halloween" is my favorite song of the entire musical, and I can't imagine it without your voice. Thank you for this wonderful contribution, and I am eagerly awaiting this film.

Anthony-
I have never been this excitied about a movie coming out in my entire life. I am so glad to see that most of the OBC is in the movie. I believe that you guys can bring the most emotion to the roles since you originated them.
I also wanted to thank you again for a workshop I got to do with you at Wittenburg University. I know you do those workshops a lot, but the things that you helped me with have truly changed my lifeis so many ways. I am a more confident performer now and you are such an inspiration to me.
I can't wait to see the movie!!

ahh.. now. weren't those the days? back in early 1996 and 1997? where you still had to pay for AOL by the hour? somewhere, in a box in a basement, i still have those first AOL posts from yesteryear... isn't interesting to see how much rent and the internet has changed in nine years?
the movie worries me, but also... like a moth to a flame, i cannot stay away.

new question:
I hear that they have set RENT in the 80s rather than in the late 90s...
Will "what you own" stay in as is??? It's not quite as "at the end of the Millenium anymore, is it???

I just saw the trailer for the film and it looks amazing. After 31 times of seeing the show on and off Broadway (but unfortunately never with you in it) it will be great to at least see you in film (in addition to hearing you on the CD). I wish you all the best of success with the film and in all your future projects!

hi anthony! omg, i LOVE RENT SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH WITH ALL MY HEART!!!! i recently saw it in the city and it changed me, the music, the set (which was so cool) and the actors. i quickly purchesed the original cast soundtrack and lets just say its been getting a LOT of use in my sterio. my fave songs and la vie boheme, no day but today, today 4 u, take me or leave me, ugh! ok, all of them are my faves!!! when i left the theater it put a whole new aspect in my life, i wear the dog chain necklace which reads "no day but today" constantly and it is now my life motto. my friend stephanie and i are OBSESSEED and know all the words to the songs and we wondered where the original cast were now. so, one google search later and we found out RENT was turning into a movie !!! OMG!!!! i support you guys all the way and although idina might be winning in the comment contest, you still rock on! one question: Would you ever consider going back to perform RENT on broadway again????
luv your number one 12-yr-old RENT fan,
mary :-) xoxoxoxox<33
ps: cant wait 4 the movie...good luck and i wish i could meet you and the cast!!!

"My biggest advice is to continue to get lots and lots of training. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and call you to be bigger than you can see yourself being. Tell the truth in your work, don't worry about being perfect. Pour your heart and soul into every moment. Love what you get the privilege to do, if you get the opportunity to do it."
That really inspires me. I, too, hope to be on B'way some day. I work hard, and I think that I'm getting better each day.
You are quite the wonderful person. I read somewhere that your birthday was October 26th, if that's true, happy belated birthday!

Hello-
I've seen Rent about 12 times while i lived in NYC, but the first time I saw it was actually one of the last productions with the OBC! I went with a group of friends, 8- 5 boys and 3 girls! So- while we watched we were amazed, becasue almost every single one of us could be matched up as one of the Rent cast members! My ex-girlfriend, Kira, turned out to be like Maureen, and she became good buddies (not girlfriends:P) with my partner in crime, Jane- We played in a jazz band together. You can imagine who she was later known as. A couple that was with us became mimi and roger! and I became the "mark" of the saturday night crew. It was so cool and funny- because like the character "Mark" I always intend on video taping everything- I liked making movies, and my marital status was---- status "mark". And instead of dreaming of Sante Fe- i actually moved to Miami instead! My favorite songs are La Vie Boheme, Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me and Tango: Maureen- It makes me laugh when I think about my ex-girlfriend and my buddie Jane. Kudos to ya- Mark and the cast of Rent!

Anthony,
Thank you for being part of the most unforgettable musical that I will always REMEMBER...my friend and I saw "Rent" in the first week of opening...it was a moving experience but the song that brought so much emotion to the surface and tears to our eyes was the song, "Seasons of Love" which served as a loving tribute to so many of our friends that died from AIDS...my friend died a week later after seeing "Rent" and my friends and I sang that song that seemed to him the summing up of his life's philosophy.
Thank you again!

Dear Anthony,
I don't know if there are words enough to express the gradification i have for you. Ofcourse I'm in love with all the other cast members, but you really pullthe show together. I know I'm just another hopelessly inlove, non-important fan but I really feel like you care. Are you going to be doing any other preformances anytime soon because I'd be there before you could say "La Vie Boheme".
Love and Praise, olivia

Dear Anthony,
As an avid film enthusiast, I have to say how much I loved "RENT." I've seen it 3 times now and find the characters to be so completely diverse from each other, and what a relief.
"Mark" is my favorite character. He seems to be the character I would most identify with.
Sorry to gush, but, WOW!
You brought more emotion and feeling to your role than any actor in film I've ever seen.
I've seen all your films, and this surpasses any other role.
Thank you for effort and good luck.

Hey Anthony.
I just finished your book "Without You". My highest compliments. I’m really thankful you had the courage to share your struggles and joy with the world. I could relate to several of your situations in the book. Sometimes it seem like you were talking to or about me, it seemed so similar. I found myself bawling my eyes out at more than one occasion. You've really inspired my to get my life in control and gain power over my anxiety and stress. I'm realizing from your writing that I am loosing connection with some of my family and friends because I'm to busy trying to cope with my life. Thank you for giving me the courage to admit it. Part of the reason I feel connected to Rent ( I’m s big fan) is because the characters and the friendships they have, remind me of myself and my friends. I hope I can keep the relationship I have with them but it has been increasingly difficult. I know now I have to try hard. Thank you so much I appreciate all of your work. Congrats on you book!

Anthony, my dear, I'd just like to say that I just read your book. I have no words, really. I loved it. I couldn't put it down, which probably isn't a good thing since I was reading it during school. But who in their right mind would listened to my history teacher, King Mono-Syllabic, anyway? I was sobbing as I read it. It was so...real. I related so well to so much of it...like losing people I love to AIDS and Cancer and struggling with relationships. Seeing “Rent” a long time ago helped me cope with those things, but reading your book is helping a lot more. I bought copies for all my friends, because there's no way they're getting mine. I'm going to go and read it again. Great job, Anthony. You're very talented, really. In more ways than one.
Peace and rainbows,
Rachel

Greetings, everybody. My first "official" blog entry. Back in 1996 and 1997, when Rent first started, I used to spend a lot of time interacting with folks on the Internet, and when the film came together for me, I dipped my toe back in the water. It's always meant a great deal to me that Rent speaks to so many people so deeply, and I've never wanted to feel removed from the show's audience, especially its biggest fans, and the Internet has been a great way to get a feel for the kind of impact that Jonathan Larson's work has made.
